Adaptation To Climate Change In Sub-Saharan Africa: An Investigation Of Capacity-Building And National Adaptation Programs Of Action, Emily A. Norford May 2009

Adaptation To Climate Change In Sub-Saharan Africa: An Investigation Of Capacity-Building And National Adaptation Programs Of Action, Emily A. Norford

Environmental Studies Honors Papers

The phenomenon of anthropogenic climate change requires immediate attention. Many of the most severe effects of climate change will occur in Sub-Saharan Africa. Least-developed countries (LDCs) in this region are particularly vulnerable to climate change, due to their geographical location and their poor ability to cope with the consequences. This study examines the various impacts, vulnerabilities, and adaptation strategies associated with climate change in sub-Saharan African LDCs, using Tanzania, Burkina Faso, and Senegal as case studies. Each of these three countries has developed a National Adaptation Program of Action (NAPA), a country-specific climate change adaptation plan designed by the United …

On The Blue Of The Population Mean For Location And Scale Parameters Of Distributions Based On Moving Extreme Ranked Set Sampling, Walid A. Abu-Dayyeh, Lana Al-Rousan May 2009

On The Blue Of The Population Mean For Location And Scale Parameters Of Distributions Based On Moving Extreme Ranked Set Sampling, Walid A. Abu-Dayyeh, Lana Al-Rousan

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

The best linear unbiased estimator (BLUE) for the population mean under moving extreme ranked set sampling (MERSS) is derived for general location and scale parameters of distributions which generalizes Al-Odat and Al-Saleh (2001). It is compared with the sample mean of simple random sampling (SRS). The efficient sample size under the MERSS for which the BLUE estimator dominates the usual sample mean under SRS for estimating the population mean is also computed for several distributions.

Some Estimators For The Population Mean Using Auxiliary Information Under Ranked Set Sampling, Walid A. Abu-Dayyeh, M. S. Ahmed, R. A. Ahmed, Hassen A. Muttlak May 2009

Some Estimators For The Population Mean Using Auxiliary Information Under Ranked Set Sampling, Walid A. Abu-Dayyeh, M. S. Ahmed, R. A. Ahmed, Hassen A. Muttlak

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

Auxiliary information is used along with ranking information to derive several classes of estimators to estimate the population mean of a variable of interest based on RSS (ranked set sample). The properties of these newly suggested estimators were examined. Comparisons between special cases of these estimators and other known estimators are made using a real data set. Some of the new estimators are superior to the old ones in terms of bias and mean square error.

A Comprehensive Environmental Assessment Of Bucknell University, Dina El-Mogazi

Technical Reports

This report is the result of research conducted by dozens of students, faculty and staff over the period from September 2007 to September 2008. At the project’s opening summit in September 2007, ten assessment teams were formed, and each was provided with a detailed list of questions to answer. Collectively, these questions addressed nearly every conceivable aspect of the University’s environmental sustainability. This document is intended to take an honest and objective look at the sustainability of Bucknell’s policies and practices in a way that will encourage creative solutions.

A Comparative Study Of Environmental Attitudes In 9-12th Grade Students In Monteverde, Costa Rica And Edina, Minnesota, May 2009, Brian Curran

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

In this study a 44-question environmental attitudes survey was given to 150 students in area schools in Monteverde, Costa Rica and Edina, Minnesota. 66 students were sampled from five schools in Monteverde and 94 students were sampled from one high school in Minnesota. The question that was addressed was whether or not: demographic, geographic, curricular, and type of school differences could explain trends in environmental attitude preferences of students that were surveyed. Statistically significant difference trends were found in questions: 4,8,12,16 and 23. However, the survey did not try to correlate demographic variables like income or level of parental education …

Social Acceptability Of Conifer Control And Sagebrush Restoration In The Northern Rocky Mountain Region, Cameron G. Nay May 2009

Social Acceptability Of Conifer Control And Sagebrush Restoration In The Northern Rocky Mountain Region, Cameron G. Nay

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

In the past two centuries, woody plant species have increased in density and extent throughout the rangelands of North America. This encroachment generally has undesirable effects on hydrological function, forest resources, and plant community composition. Encroachment of Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii) and ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa) into sagebrush communities is occurring in the Northern Rocky Mountain region. Removal and restoration treatments are often proposed to manage this issue, mainly prescribed fire, mechanical destruction, and/or herbicide use. Several contextual factors may affect public level of acceptability for such treatments. The issue frames used to present this problem to …

Stratigraphy And Geochemistry Of Squantum Tillite, Boston Bay Group : Using Field Log And Icp Analysis, Efe Junior Erukanure May 2009

Stratigraphy And Geochemistry Of Squantum Tillite, Boston Bay Group : Using Field Log And Icp Analysis, Efe Junior Erukanure

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

The Squantum Tillite has been studied in order to ascertain its depositional history. The Squantum Tillite is part of the Neoproterozoic Boston Bay Group, located in the Boston Basin. Researchers have proposed contradicting hypotheses about the origin of the rocks in the area for over a century. While some believe that the rocks were deposited by glaciers along a prograding submarine margin, others believe the rocks are of volcanic or tectonic origin. Many scientists are inclined to believe the rocks are of tectonic origin because the Squantum Tillite is located in a tectonic Basin (the Boston Basin).

Field logging was …

Homegrown Rhetoric: Rhetorical Vision In States' Marketing Of Local Foods, Joni Lea Hoke May 2009

Homegrown Rhetoric: Rhetorical Vision In States' Marketing Of Local Foods, Joni Lea Hoke

All Theses

Beginning in the late 1940s, concerns arose about the enlarging scope of the industrial American food system. Subsequent analysis revealed a continuing pattern of expansion throughout the 1970s and 1980s. A countermovement developed with the aim of altering food production and distribution to create more regionalized food systems. Eventually, individual states came to create their own marketing programs to promote locally grown foods. Private interests also developed initiatives to promote eating locally. By 2007, the term coined to describe one who strives to eat local foods, "locavore," had become New Oxford Dictionary's Word of the Year. The states' efforts are …

A Place Like This: An Environmental Justice History Of The Owens Valley - Water In Indigenous, Colonial, And Manzanar Stories, Monica Embrey

Pomona Senior Theses

This text provides an environmental justice analysis of the stories of the people who lived in the Owens Valley, who watered its land and cultivated its crops—pine trees, apple trees, and kabocha alike. Telling the personal stories of challenge and resistance that manifested alongside the oppressive forces of military and state domination provides the opportunity to align forcibly relocated, exploited and incarcerated people’s struggles throughout time. This text starts with The Nü’ma Peoples who were the first humans to live in the Owens Valley and continues with the struggle for empire between rival colonial empires of agriculture and distant urban …
