Nightcool: Nocturnal Radiation Cooling Concept, Long Term Performance Evaluation, Florida Solar Energy Center, John Sherwin
FSEC Energy Research Center®
An experimental evaluation has been conducted on a building-integrated night sky cooling system designed to substantially reduce space cooling needs in homes in North American climates. The system uses a sealed attic covered by a highly conductive metal roof (a roof integrated radiator) which is selectively linked by air flow to the main zone with the attic zone to provide cooling - largely during nighttime hours. Available house mass is used to store sensible cooling. The system's capability for solar dehumidification with minimal electricity input is demonstrated with long-term performance data taken over 2007 - 2009. A year-long study period …

Donald Tsang's Vision For An Integrated Asia, Knowledge@Smu
Knowledge@SMU
Stem protectionism, step-up education, reduce our reliance on the West, emphasize strong Asian values, integrate currencies and promote trade partnerships – these are items that show up on Donald Tsang's wish list of things by which Asia might be united. What's more, he believes his vision of an Asian bloc will likely take shape within this very century. Speaking at SMU's Ho Rih Hwa Leadership in Asia public lecture series, the Hong Kong Chief Executive explained why Asian countries must forge closer links with one another, and how the region can eventually present itself to be a foundation of stability …

The Flames Of Namugongo: Issues Around Theological Narrativity, Heteronormativity, Globalization, And Aids In Africa, Ken Hamilton S.V.D
Journal of the Black Catholic Theological Symposium
Hamilton’s paper, delivered during the 2008 Annual Meeting in Chicago, uses the hagiography of Charles Lwanga and the Martyrs of Uganda to reveal an unrelenting problem of the Church – the ways in which the assumptions of heternormativity and sodomitical discourse drown out the voices of those who do not fall into heteronormative sexual and/or gendered identities, and lead to the open persecution, imprisonment, and torture of gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgendered persons in Uganda, and in fact all over Africa. Casting those with ‘othered’ sexual identities as evil, or even simply turning a deaf ear to the persecution faced …
Ecological Explanation Between Manipulation And Mechanism Description, Viorel Pâslaru
Ecological Explanation Between Manipulation And Mechanism Description, Viorel Pâslaru
Philosophy Faculty Publications
James Woodward offers a conception of explanation and mechanism in terms of interventionist counterfactuals. Based on a case from ecology, I show that ecologists’ approach to that case satisfiesWoodward’s conditions for explanation and mechanism, but his conception does not fully capture what ecologists view as explanatory. The new mechanistic philosophy likewise aims to describe central aspects of mechanisms, but I show that it is not sufficient to account for ecological mechanisms. I argue that in ecology explanation involves identification of invariant and insensitive causal relationships and descriptions of the mechanistic characteristics that make these relations possible.

The activity of the included five years’ worth of receipts was analyzed for both degree of idleness and extent of use. Analyses were conducted upon the collection of receipts as a whole and upon the collection disaggregated into broad subject categories and into Library of Congress (LC) subclasses. When reading the report to follow, one should keep in mind that statistics may sometimes mask as much as they reveal, especially when one is dealing with non-discrete category data. For example, several LC subclasses (e.g., HC = Economic Theory and Demography) cover multiple topical areas, so analysis at the LC …
Beginnings Of The History And Philosophy Of Andragogy 1833-2000, John Henschke
Beginnings Of The History And Philosophy Of Andragogy 1833-2000, John Henschke
Adult Education Faculty Works
Andragogy had a very slow beginning over a period of almost one century as a term referring to the theory and practice of adult education. Numerous elements were involved in the seventy years it took to establish its foundation: starting in England and the USA; andragogy and human resource development (HRD); andragogy and self-directed learning (SDL); conflict between supporters and detractors; comparing European and USA perspectives; trust in learners' abilities; scientific foundation of andragogy; skepticism and its counter-balance; and, antecedents of andragogy. Trends in usage and considering its possible benefits set the tone for the future of andragogy from 2000 …

Victims Of A Church In Transition: The Transition Of The Catholic Church And Its Effect On The American Nun Population, Spencer Thomas Casement
Victims Of A Church In Transition: The Transition Of The Catholic Church And Its Effect On The American Nun Population, Spencer Thomas Casement
History
Proceeding the second world war changes in the expectations placed on nuns in America and the influence that the Catholic Church itself has over a broad range of issues in public and private life have taken place. For example, the influx of lay intellectuals during the post-war years preceding Vatican II and continuing on for years afterwards. The main focus of this paper will be to explore the reasons why the nun population in the United States seems to be decreasing and how this trend fits into the broader context of the Catholic Church’s loss of hierarchal structure and traditional …

America As The City Upon A Hill: An Historical, Philosophical, And Theological Critique Of The Historiographical Construal Of America As A Christian Nation, John David Wilsey
Faculty Dissertations
This dissertation offers a critique of the idea that America is a Christian nation, either by virtue of its founding as such or because of a unique choice made by God for a special purpose and/or relationship. Rather than being a Christian nation, America is a nation with religious liberty.
The first chapter asks and answers the question, between the founding of the Massachusetts Bay Colony and the enacting of the U. S. Constitution, how did conceptions of the relationship between religion and the state change? Massachusetts Bay Colony was established in 1630 as a Christian commonwealth. It was one …
Social Service Needs And Perceptions Of Low-Income Latinos In Metro Denver, Marissa M. Kaesemeyer
Social Service Needs And Perceptions Of Low-Income Latinos In Metro Denver, Marissa M. Kaesemeyer
Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)
The Latino population has the highest uninsured rates among all racial and ethnic groups in the United States. Latinos are likely to be poor, and have difficulties accessing social services. The purpose of this study is to understand what social services Latinos need, as well as Latino perceptions regarding access to social services. In order to provide better social services and ultimately maintain good health, it is important for social service organizations to understand their clients' needs and perceptions. The research question is "What are the social service needs of low-income Latinos and how do they perceive access to these …
