Emi Chip-To-Tem Cell Coupling For A Microcontroller And Emi Coupling Resulting From Via Transition And Reference Plane Change, Hemant Bishnoi Jan 2009

Emi Chip-To-Tem Cell Coupling For A Microcontroller And Emi Coupling Resulting From Via Transition And Reference Plane Change, Hemant Bishnoi

Masters Theses

"The work presented in this thesis can be broadly categorized under two main headings, estimation of electromagnetic interference (EMI) performance and characterization of EMI performance.

A numerical model of capacitive coupling between two orthogonally crossing double stripline was developed earlier by Kenji Araki and Yoshio Kami at the University of Electro-Communications, Japan. Their model was shown to be accurate up to 3GHz. A verification of their numerical model with full wave simulations is presented here.

In another work done by Shaohua Li, dynamic currents in the power pins of a microcontroller were predicted by using an IC model. The ultimate …

Design And Implementation Of An Asynchronous Null Convention Logic (Ncl) Fpga, Indira Priyadarshini Dugganapally Jan 2009

Design And Implementation Of An Asynchronous Null Convention Logic (Ncl) Fpga, Indira Priyadarshini Dugganapally

Masters Theses

"This Master’s thesis outlines the design of a completely asynchronous Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) for implementing NULL Convention Logic (NCL) digital circuits. The proposed design uses four Configurable Logic Blocks (CLB), each of which in turn is designed using four Logic Elements (LE) to implement NCL logic function. Each LE can be configured to function as any one of the 27 fundamental NCL gates. A Logic Element is designed by concatenating a Look-Up-Table (LUT) with a pull-up pull-down transistor chain and a hysteresis loop. The interconnections and the switch box are designed using pass transistors and SRAM. In this …

Development Of Extrusion On Demand For Ceramic Freeze-Form Extrusion Fabrication Processes, Parimal Sanjay Kulkarni Jan 2009

Development Of Extrusion On Demand For Ceramic Freeze-Form Extrusion Fabrication Processes, Parimal Sanjay Kulkarni

Masters Theses

"Freeze-form Extrusion Fabrication (FEF) is a Solid Freeform Fabrication method. It involves the deposition of a ceramic paste in a layer by layer manner to construct a three dimensional structure. The ceramic paste used in this process consists of a high solids loading of ceramic powder mixed with water and a nominal amount of an aqueous organic binder. These characteristics make the process environmentally friendly. Also the absence of dies or molds in the process makes it suitable for fabrication of materials like ceramics. In the past, parts have been fabricated with continuous extrusion of a ceramic paste. In FEF, …

Inductance Modeling And Extraction In Emc Applications, Clint Matthew Patton Jan 2009

Inductance Modeling And Extraction In Emc Applications, Clint Matthew Patton

Masters Theses

"Inductance has become a challenging problem for EMC engineers in many applications. Regardless of the application at hand, the first step remains the same; return to the physics and trace the current paths. IGBTs have become an important part in the design of power electronics because of their ability to switch fast and with stand high currents. Modules used for three phase motor drives often create problems when neglected parasitic components show themselves and interfere with the performance of the desired operation of a system. Many manufactures of these modules do not give out equivalent circuit modules and therefore leave …

An Analysis Of Lessons Learned And Best Practices From Fuel Cell Applications With An Emphasis On Hydrogen Technology, Clint Alex Cottrell Jan 2009

An Analysis Of Lessons Learned And Best Practices From Fuel Cell Applications With An Emphasis On Hydrogen Technology, Clint Alex Cottrell

Masters Theses

"In its review of the Department of Energy's Research Development and Demonstration (RD&D) plan for hydrogen, the National Academies recommended a study of lessons learned from technologies developed for stationary fuel cell power systems. Thus, the motivation for this thesis is to study and identify the lessons learned and best practices from prior stationary fuel cell power programs. To understand how to prepare for this technology, this study conducted a thorough investigation of past stationary alternative power projects to assess the opportunities for future stationary power efforts, and how this information can be used to meet objectives for future fuel …

Application Of Ground Penetrating Radar (Gpr) For Bridge Deck Condition Assessment: Using A 1.5 Ghz Ground-Coupled Antenna, Amos Wamweya Jan 2009

Application Of Ground Penetrating Radar (Gpr) For Bridge Deck Condition Assessment: Using A 1.5 Ghz Ground-Coupled Antenna, Amos Wamweya

Masters Theses

"This study is a GPR-based assessment of three bridge decks, two with a hot bituminous wearing surface and one with a bare concrete slab. The primary objectives of this study were: 1) to assess the integrity of the three bridge decks using a 1.5 GHz ground-coupled GPR antenna, and 2) to evaluate the utility of the 1.5 GHz ground-coupled antenna for bridge deck investigations. Core control (chloride ion concentration data and core integrity data) and visual inspection were used as interpretive constraint. The acquired GPR data were interpreted, and two plan view maps were generated. One depicts the magnitude of …

Red De Salud -- Network Of Health : Structural Violence, Exclusion And Inclusion In Venezuela, Steven John Bates Jan 2009

Red De Salud -- Network Of Health : Structural Violence, Exclusion And Inclusion In Venezuela, Steven John Bates

Dissertations and Theses

This thesis is a study of the socio-economic changes in the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela since the new government came into office in 1999. The research hypothesis for this thesis is that the changes and parallel socioeconomic structures being implemented in Venezuela since 1999 have decreased structural violence, and have provided more inclusion for previously excluded people. As the methodology used is qualitative, utilizing textual analysis to conduct a case study, academic journals from the fields of conflict resolution, sociology, political science, public health, cultural studies and economics were relied upon for the most part. This study of structural violence …

Governing In The Vernacular: Eugen Ehrlich And Late Habsburg Ethnography, Monica E. Eppinger Jan 2009

Governing In The Vernacular: Eugen Ehrlich And Late Habsburg Ethnography, Monica E. Eppinger

All Faculty Scholarship

Eugen Ehrlich's vision for a "dynamic conception of law" in 1903 challenges prior focus on doctrine and logic with a demand that legal science direct attention to the "facts of daily life." Ehrlich's program -- his innovative conception of law and calls for a new sociology of law -- has been claimed as inspiration by those intent on modernizing law and state administration and by critics launching attacks on state fetishism. Between these extremes, Ehrlich's understudied ideas about implementing "living law" as a program for governance deserve re-examination.

This Article, situating Ehrlich's work in the social, intellectual, and political milieu …

Nation-Building In The Penumbra: Notes From A Liminal State, Monica E. Eppinger Jan 2009

Nation-Building In The Penumbra: Notes From A Liminal State, Monica E. Eppinger

All Faculty Scholarship

The emergence of post-Socialist legal orders is reshaping some of the familiar terrain of comparative legal studies. This Article, invited as part of an effort to think about the topic of "What the Rest think of the West," reconsiders the vast legal re-codification projects that stand at the center of "nation-building" projects in formerly Socialist states. Such projects, and the rupture from which they emerge, challenge essentialist or static notions of identity and assumptions of where the West is or where the Rest begin. Anthropological concepts of "liminality" and "deixis" assist in understanding Ukrainian legal experts' thinking on legal reforms …

Shareholders In The Jury Box: A Populist Check Against Corporate Mismanagement, Ann M. Scarlett Jan 2009

Shareholders In The Jury Box: A Populist Check Against Corporate Mismanagement, Ann M. Scarlett

All Faculty Scholarship

The recent subprime mortgage disaster exposed corporate officers and directors who mismanaged their corporations, failed to exercise proper oversight, and acted in their self-interest. Two previous waves of corporate scandals in this decade revealed similar misconduct. After the initial scandals, Congress and the Securities and Exchange Commission attempted to prevent the next crisis in corporate governance through legislative and regulatory actions such as the Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002. Those attempts failed. Shareholder derivative litigation has also failed because judges accord corporate executives great deference and thus rarely impose liability for breaches of fiduciary duties.

To prevent the next crisis in …

The Anti-Case Method: Herbert Wechsler And The Political History Of The Criminal Law Course, Anders Walker Jan 2009

The Anti-Case Method: Herbert Wechsler And The Political History Of The Criminal Law Course, Anders Walker

All Faculty Scholarship

This article is the first to recover the dramatic transformation in criminal law teaching away from the case method and towards a more open-ended philosophical approach in the 1930s. It makes three contributions. One, it shows how Columbia Law Professor Herbert Wechsler revolutionized the teaching of criminal law by de-emphasizing cases and including a variety of non-case related material in his 1940 text Criminal Law and Its Administration. Two, it reveals that at least part of Wechsler's intention behind transforming criminal law teaching was to undermine Langdell's case method, which he blamed for producing a "closed-system" view of the law …

An Effective Alcohol Prevention Program In Kent County, Michigan, Donald Tex Bryant Jan 2009

An Effective Alcohol Prevention Program In Kent County, Michigan, Donald Tex Bryant

Michigan Journal of Public Health

Over a two year period the “Making Sobriety Attractive” program directed by Alert Labs has significantly decreased the use of alcohol and marijuana at a high school in Kent County, Michigan. The program uses an environmental approach by placing posters with messages that correct students’ misperceptions of alcohol and drug use at their school with the correct data about the actual use of these substances. The figures for the actual use are drawn from an annual survey of the students. As students begin to accept the messages about the actual use of illegal substances, their own use declines as they …
