Secondary Preservice Teachers' Understanding Of Euclidean Geometry, Karen Sabey Jan 2009

Secondary Preservice Teachers' Understanding Of Euclidean Geometry, Karen Sabey

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The lack of mathematical understanding of elementary preservice teachers with respect to many mathematical topics has been well documented. Far fewer studies have been conducted on any content area of knowledge of secondary teachers and even less in the mathematics content area. The assumption by the general population is that mathematics majors are adequately prepared to teach the content of secondary mathematics because they major in mathematics. Mathematics educators, however, note the lack of conceptual understandings in many content areas in these mathematics teaching majors. While mathematics educators are aware of this deficiency, there is little research data at the …

Interactive Writing In A Kindergarten Classroom, Amy Henze Jan 2009

Interactive Writing In A Kindergarten Classroom, Amy Henze

Graduate Research Papers

This research study focused on the use of interactive writing as the primary method of writing instruction in a kindergarten classroom. The purpose of the study was to find out the extent to which and in what ways interactive writing supports the needs of all students at various emergent writing stages. The study also examined students' writing samples to see if there was carryover of skills from the interactive writing lessons to the students' independent writing. Results indicate a variety of skills were taught during the interactive writing lessons, and all of the students showed growth in the use of …

Gender Performativity In H.D.'S Sea Garden, Angela Sanigar Jan 2009

Gender Performativity In H.D.'S Sea Garden, Angela Sanigar

Theses : Honours

Sea Garden was the first book of poetry written by H.D. in 1916. Read through the lens of Judith Butler's theory of performativity, the book can be interpreted as an investigation of gender and identity in ways that challenge the confines of heteronormativity. Ultimately, I will argue that the poems work in ways close to Judith Butler's sense of 'queer', although as will become clear, my 'queer' reading of H.D.'s Sea Garden differs from the dominant queer readings of her work that currently exist. To this end, I will then discuss how Sea Garden operates as a community of different …

The Validity Of Deal Protection Devices Under Anglo-American Law, Wai Yee Wan Jan 2009

The Validity Of Deal Protection Devices Under Anglo-American Law, Wai Yee Wan

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

This paper analyzes deal protection devices, specifically termination fees and lockup agreements, that are entered into by publicly listed target companies in favor of the bidders, under Anglo-American law. U.S. (specifically Delaware) and U.K. law and regulation differ markedly in the regulation of these devices. Delaware law generally gives more leeway for the target board to enter into deal protection devices. The U.K. regime is much more shareholder-centric and severely restricts most types of deal protections. This paper examines the differences and argues that the U.K. regime is the result of the strong influence of institutional share ownership. In contrast, …

Peer Network Emergence And Change In The Classroom: A Multiple Systems Perspective, Nicole Ann Sage Jan 2009

Peer Network Emergence And Change In The Classroom: A Multiple Systems Perspective, Nicole Ann Sage

Dissertations and Theses

This study examined peer group processes in the classroom that can potentially explain how motivationally "rich" children get "richer" whereas motivationally "poor" children get "poorer." In contrast to research on group processes which focuses on socialization from group to individual, this study focuses on contributions from the individual to his/her group. The viewpoint taken for this study is that children actively choose group members based on their own self-system state, thereby creating their own peer environments in which they develop.Viewed as open complex systems, children's natural peer groups were examined using data collected from students and their teachers at five …

Foreword – Will Hpv Vaccines Prevent Cervical Cancers Among Poor Women Of Color?: Global Health Policy At The Intersection Of Human Rights And Intellectual Property Law, Kevin Outterson

Faculty Scholarship

Cervical cancer is a disease of social inequality. Women with access to effective screening and treatment rarely die from cervical cancer. The burden of cervical cancer mortality falls most heavily among the poorer women of the world. Cervical cancer starkly illustrates global inequality across race, sex and class. Cervical cancer disproportionately kills poor women of color. The HPV vaccine is a triumph of science.

Accessing Insolvent Consumer Debtors, Challenges And Strategies For Empirical Research, Janis P. Sarra, Danielle Sarra Jan 2009

Accessing Insolvent Consumer Debtors, Challenges And Strategies For Empirical Research, Janis P. Sarra, Danielle Sarra

All Faculty Publications

Insolvency law policy is best informed by a comprehensive understanding of the policy objectives of particular measures and the practical outcomes of particular choices. Yet there continues to be a lack of empirical research in Canada in respect of consumer insolvency, its underlying causes and its outcomes. Debtors' or bankrupts' experience with the insolvency system is almost impossible to gauge with the data now collected. Research funding for legal, economic and sociological scholars in the insolvency area continues to be very limited. This paper examines current challenges and strategies for empirical research on consumer insolvency in Canada. It explores options …

Answering The Millennium Call For The Right To Maternal Health: The Need To Eliminate User Fees, Margaux J. Hall, Aziza Ahmed, Stephanie E. Swanson Jan 2009

Answering The Millennium Call For The Right To Maternal Health: The Need To Eliminate User Fees, Margaux J. Hall, Aziza Ahmed, Stephanie E. Swanson

Faculty Scholarship

Complications during childbirth and pregnancy are a main source of death and disability among women of reproductive age. Approximately 536,000 women die from pregnancy-related complications each year. Developing countries suffer most profoundly, accounting for 99% of deaths. The world's nations, by endorsing U.N. Millennium Development Goals, recognized that most deaths are preventable; they have pledged to reduce maternal mortality by 75% by 2015. This Article assesses the barriers presented by user fees - formal charges for health services still charged by many countries - to the attainment of MDGs. It shows that user fees hamper healthcare access, particularly in emergency …

Subordinate Saints : Women And The Founding Of Third Church, Boston, 1669-1674, Melissa Ann Johnson Jan 2009

Subordinate Saints : Women And The Founding Of Third Church, Boston, 1669-1674, Melissa Ann Johnson

Dissertations and Theses

Although seventeenth-century New England has been one of the most heavily studied subjects in American history, women's lived experience of Puritan church membership has been incompletely understood. Histories of New England's Puritan churches have often assumed membership to have had universal implications, and studies of New England women either have focused on dissenting women or have neglected women's religious lives altogether despite the centrality of religion to the structure of New England society and culture.

This thesis uses pamphlets, sermons, and church records to demonstrate that women's church membership in Massachusetts's Puritan churches differed from men's because women were prohibited …

The Nature Of People's Perceptions Of Wolves, Laura Briana Nobel Jan 2009

The Nature Of People's Perceptions Of Wolves, Laura Briana Nobel

Dissertations and Theses

European immigrants once regarded wolves as the "devil in disguise" (Lopez, 1978, p.40). With our growing awareness of other cultural perspectives and flourishing body of scientific knowledge with regard to wolves' behavior, our perceptions of wolves have become more complicated and nuanced. Our collective awareness of the environment in which we live also gathers complexity. I examine these issues in this study. Wolves are returning to Oregon. The arrival of wolf B-45 in 1999 heralded the beginning of the return of wild wolves to Oregon. More wolves are expected to cross the border as young sub-adults disperse from the growing …

The Fair Information Principles: A Comparison Of U.S. And Canadian Privacy Policy As Applied To The Private Sector, Shane Crounse Jan 2009

The Fair Information Principles: A Comparison Of U.S. And Canadian Privacy Policy As Applied To The Private Sector, Shane Crounse

Theses

U.S. consumers are worried about their privacy and their personal information. High profile cases of identity theft involving companies losing the private information of hundreds of thousands of customers have only served to elevate the mistrust consumers have for companies that collect and share their personal information. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is charged with protecting U.S. consumers from fraud, deception, and unfair business practices in the marketplace; a task made difficult by an overarching need to balance the rights of the individuals against the security needs of the country and the free flow of information required by a free …

Website Compliance With Ethical Guidelines By Psychologists And Professional Counselors, Joseph Iii Yazvac Jan 2009

Website Compliance With Ethical Guidelines By Psychologists And Professional Counselors, Joseph Iii Yazvac

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

There is currently very little research investigating the ethical practice of e-therapy, and none that distinguishes between types of therapists in terms of their compliance with ethical codes pertaining to e-therapy. The American Psychological Association does not have ethical standards specific to the provision of e-therapy but the American Counseling Association does. The purpose of this study was to assess differences in ethical compliance for e-therapy websites sponsored by psychologists and e-therapy websites sponsored by professional counselors. Specific ethics codes for the practice of e-therapy of the American Counseling Association were used to generate an assessment instrument, which served as …

Assessment Of A Proposed Project For Improving The Quality Of Industrial Water For The Thermal Power Plant - “Kosova B” : [Presentation Given May 20, 2009], Visar Beqiri Jan 2009

Assessment Of A Proposed Project For Improving The Quality Of Industrial Water For The Thermal Power Plant - “Kosova B” : [Presentation Given May 20, 2009], Visar Beqiri

Theses

This Capstone Project will produce an implementation plan that addresses the problem of low industrial water quality from the water treatment plant (WTP) for use in the thermal power plant - “Kosova B” (TPP-KB) in Kosovo. The project will have special importance because the quality of water is one of the most dominant problems in the TPP-KB. The problem of low industrial water quality is due to an old WTP system and manually controlled water treatment process. Since water in thermal power plants is transformed into steam, low quality water produces low quality steam. Low quality of steam causes foliation …

Do “Sea Turtles” Creep Faster Than “Soft-Shell Turtles”: A Quantitative Study Of Academic Performance Of Law Faculty In Premier Chinese Law Schools, Wei Zhang Jan 2009

Do “Sea Turtles” Creep Faster Than “Soft-Shell Turtles”: A Quantitative Study Of Academic Performance Of Law Faculty In Premier Chinese Law Schools, Wei Zhang

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

Since the adoption of the “Reform and Opening” policy in 1978, China has revived its century long tradition of sending students and scholars to study in western countries. In recent years, the unprecedented economic growth, paired with an increasingly competitive rate of compensation, has attracted a considerable number of such foreign degree holders back home to work or teach. In modern Chinese vocabulary, these returning talents are named as “sea turtles”, a word mimicking the pronunciation of the Chinese equivalent of the English phrase “coming back from abroad”. On the other hand, in compliance with the ancient Chinese rhetorical technique …

The Well-Being And Identities Of 14- To 26-Year-Old Intercountry Adoptees And Their Non-Adopted Migrant Peers In Western Australia, Geertruda Rosenwald Jan 2009

The Well-Being And Identities Of 14- To 26-Year-Old Intercountry Adoptees And Their Non-Adopted Migrant Peers In Western Australia, Geertruda Rosenwald

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

Intercountry adoption is a globally politicised institution that triggers strong discourses about whether transplantation to a markedly different country and culture, often into families with racially different parents, negatively affects the children ' s well-being and identity. Although empirical intercountry adoption research has increased elsewhere, Australian-based research has lagged behind. This thesis presents a body of evidence about the well-being and identity of over half the population of 14- to 26-year-old intercountry adoptees in Western Australia, how their well-being changed from 1994 to 2004, how they compare with non-adopted migrant peers and the influence of risk and threat factors. In …

Factors That Influence The Decisions Parents Make When Choosing A Secondary School For Their Children, Rosemary Cahill Jan 2009

Factors That Influence The Decisions Parents Make When Choosing A Secondary School For Their Children, Rosemary Cahill

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

The impetus for this portfolio is the accelerating drift of Australian school students from state-run, free government schools to fee-paying independent and/or Catholic schools within the non-government sector. Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) data show that between 1996 and 2006, student enrolments in non-government schools grew by 21.5% compared with 1.2% in government schools (Australian Bureau of Statistics [ABS], 2007). In this portfolio, a sociological lens reflective of the pragmatic paradigm is applied to the question of school choice in order to understand parents' thinking behind the choices they are making and, moving forward, how the funding and governance of …

A Rylean Revision To Biological Naturalism, Timothy E. Kunke Jan 2009

A Rylean Revision To Biological Naturalism, Timothy E. Kunke

Master's Theses

This essay is a contrasting of John Searle's biological naturalist view of the mind with Gilbert Ryle's deconstruction of the problem of mind-body interaction. These two positions are most uniquely suited for this purpose since, together they constitute the best positive theory and criticism of the same problem. It will be argued that consciousness - a feature of human experience which proves to be one of the most difficult to account for, from the perspective of the naturalist can be regarded as a dispositional attribute of a complex biological organism. Considered as such, it is what Searle would term a …

Arbitrator Integrity: The Transient And The Permanent, William W. Park Jan 2009

Arbitrator Integrity: The Transient And The Permanent, William W. Park

Faculty Scholarship

The somewhat excessive words attributed to Heraclitus find some application in the current search for ethical standards applicable to. arbitrators sitting in international disputes. New patterns of misbehavior create new types of ethical challenges. Few criteria for evaluating arbitrator independence and impartiality will likely stay foolproof for long, given how ingenious fools often prove themselves to be.
