Dynamic Web Service Selection For Reliable Web Service Composition, San-Yih Hwang, Ee Peng Lim, Chien-Hsiang Lee, Cheng-Hung Chen Jan 2009

Dynamic Web Service Selection For Reliable Web Service Composition, San-Yih Hwang, Ee Peng Lim, Chien-Hsiang Lee, Cheng-Hung Chen

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

This paper studies the dynamic web service selection problem in a failure-prone environment, which aims to determine a subset of Web services to be invoked at run-time so as to successfully orchestrate a composite web service. We observe that both the composite and constituent web services often constrain the sequences of invoking their operations and therefore propose to use finite state machine to model the permitted invocation sequences of Web service operations. We assign each state of execution an aggregated reliability to measure the probability that the given state will lead to successful execution in the context where each web …

Lumad's Struggle To Claim Ancestral Domain Right In The Armm: The Tlmadc Perspective, Elena Chiong-Javier Jan 2009

Lumad's Struggle To Claim Ancestral Domain Right In The Armm: The Tlmadc Perspective, Elena Chiong-Javier

SDRC Publications

In 1993, the Indigenous Peoples (IPs) of the Philippines marked an initial victory in their struggle to claim their right to ancestral domain when the Philippine Government provided a window for IPs to establish their right to such claims. Through the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), the government issued Administrative Order (AO) No. 02, a national policy instrument that set the rules and regulations for the identification, delineation, and recognition of ancestral domain claims. Subsequently, other administrative policies were created to address problems encountered in the issuance and management of Certificates of Ancestral Domain Claim (CADC). These experiences …

Participation in peer groups plays a critical role in adolescent development and experience. The significance of peer groups in human development is likely salient throughout the lifespan, but there is reason to expect peer group interactions to most significantly influence adolescents and their growth trajectories. Adolescence, as a period, has always been a point of significant biological, cognitive, and social development, beginning with the onset of puberty. It is this transition from childhood to adulthood where adolescents face identity confusion (Erikson, 1968). It is also during this stage when they slowly try to relinquish their dependence on parents and, instead, …

Vision And Desire: Jim Morrison's Mythography Beyond The Death Of God, Ellen J. Greenham Jan 2009

Vision And Desire: Jim Morrison's Mythography Beyond The Death Of God, Ellen J. Greenham

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

The poetry of Jim Morrison, as opposed to his lyric verse, has been the subject of little critical examination. The aim of this paper is to open up an understanding and interpretation of a mythographic landscape developed by Morrison in his response to existence in a demythologised western culture. Through the use of the Greek myth of Oedipus in its entirety, as opposed to the two most universally known events of the adult Oedipus' life, discussion here will attempt to demonstrate that Morrison developed a cohesive, holistic vision of the human condition of existence in the world, and presented a …

Functional Significance Of Glycoprotein Clearance By The Asialoglycoprotein Receptor And The Mannose/Galnac-4-So4 Receptor, Lindsay Steirer Taylor

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

Glycosylation plays an important role in many biological functions. Two highly abundant, carbohydrate-specific, endocytic receptors reside in parenchymal and endothelial cells of the liver. Our lab has shown that the asialoglycoprotein receptor: ASGR) is capable of clearing glycoproteins bearing terminal Siaalpha2,6GalNAc as well as ones bearing terminal Gal/ GalNAc and that the Mannose/GalNAc-4-SO4 receptor: MR) is capable of clearing glycoproteins bearing terminal GalNAc-4-SO4. I am taking a genetic approach identifying endogenous ligands for the ASGR and the MR in vivo and establishing the biologic significance of clearing these glycoproteins from the blood. A number of glycosylated hormones such as luteinizing …

Training And Transfer Of Attentional Control In Older Adulthood, Anna Mackay-Brandt Jan 2009

Training And Transfer Of Attentional Control In Older Adulthood, Anna Mackay-Brandt

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

Recent research in cognitive aging has brought renewed interest to a decades old question. Can cognitive skills be trained, and if so, how widely does that trained skill transfer? Previous research has demonstrated that older adults are able to improve their performance on laboratory cognitive tests and in some cases these benefits can transfer to other similar tests: e.g. Kramer et al., 2004). A few cases have demonstrated transfer to more distal outcomes: Willis et al., 2006). This area of research is still in an early stage, and reports are mixed with regard to the efficacy of cognitive training. These …

Identification And Characterization Of Novel Astroviruses, Stacy Finkbeiner Jan 2009

Identification And Characterization Of Novel Astroviruses, Stacy Finkbeiner

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

Approximately 1.8 million children die from diarrhea annually, and millions more suffer multiple episodes of nonfatal diarrhea. Despite the availability of improved molecular diagnostics to detect the known viral agents, the etiology of a large proportion of diarrheal cases is unknown. In fact, it is estimated that no causative agent can be identified in up to 40% of sporadic cases or in gastroenteritis outbreaks. Detection of novel or unexpected viruses is the first step in identifying agents that could potentially close the diagnostic gap and pave the way for the development of more comprehensive preventative measures and better treatments. This …

A Framework For Temperature Imaging Using The Change In Backscattered Ultrasonic Signals, Yuzheng Guo Jan 2009

A Framework For Temperature Imaging Using The Change In Backscattered Ultrasonic Signals, Yuzheng Guo

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

Hyperthermia is a cancer treatment that elevates tissue temperature to 40 to 43oC. It would benefit from a non-invasive, safe, inexpensive and convenient thermometry to monitor heating patterns. Ultrasound is a modality that meets these requirements. In our initial work, using both prediction and experimental data, we showed that the change in the backscattered energy: CBE) is a potential parameter for TI. CBE, however, was computed in a straightforward yet ad hoc manner. In this work, we developed and exploited a mathematical representation for our approach to TI to optimize temperature accuracy. Non-thermal effects of noise and motion confound the …

Totem, Taboo And The Concept Of Law: Myth In Hart And Freud, Jeanne L. Schroeder Jan 2009

Totem, Taboo And The Concept Of Law: Myth In Hart And Freud, Jeanne L. Schroeder

Articles

The article critically examines H.L.A. Hart’s The Concept of Law, arguing that its foundational narrative of legal evolution relies on a mythological anthropology. Hart’s account of the transition from primitive to modern legal systems through secondary rules is revealed to be a myth that, while not historically accurate, conveys deeper truths about the nature of law and modernity. The analysis draws parallels between Hart’s mythography and Freud’s psychoanalytic theories, particularly in Totem and Taboo and Moses and Monotheism, to explore how both thinkers conceptualize the origins of law as a shift from direct force to symbolic authority. The article contends …

Generation And Circuit Development Of Zebrafish Retinal Horizontal Cells, Philip Williams Jan 2009

Generation And Circuit Development Of Zebrafish Retinal Horizontal Cells, Philip Williams

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

The construction of functional neuronal circuits requires proper coordination of many developmental processes. Neurons must be generated in the proper number and migrate to their mature locations within the nervous system. Upon completion and sometimes during neuronal migration, neurons must elaborate complex dendritic and axonal arbors and then form precise synaptic connections in the background of a plethora of possible synaptic partners. Glial cells must also establish specialized associations with a number of neuronal structures including synapses and axons. In order to create a detailed understanding of how a neuron progresses through all of these stages of development, I have …

Factors Affecting Size And Swelling Of Poly(Ethylene Glycol) Hydrogel Microspheres Formed In Aqueous Sodium Sulfate Solutions, Michael Nichols Jan 2009

Factors Affecting Size And Swelling Of Poly(Ethylene Glycol) Hydrogel Microspheres Formed In Aqueous Sodium Sulfate Solutions, Michael Nichols

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

The lower critical solution temperature: LCST) behavior of poly(ethylene glycol): PEG) in aqueous sodium sulfate solutions was exploited to fabricate hydrogel microspheres under mild conditions without the use of other monomers, polymers, surfactants or organic solvents. Reactive PEG derivatives underwent thermally induced phase separation to produce spherical PEG-rich domains that coarsened pending gelation, resulting in stable hydrogel microspheres that were polydisperse in size. The degree of reaction prior to phase separation, reaction rate within the PEG-rich domains, and duration of the reaction were independently varied to elucidate their effects on final microsphere size and gain insight regarding the mechanism of …

The Continuity Of Justification Defenses, Kyron J. Huigens Jan 2009

The Continuity Of Justification Defenses, Kyron J. Huigens

Articles

This Article presents a legal theory of legal justification. It examines the elements of offense definitions and justification defensesor, more accurately, the conjunctions and disjunctions between these elements-to resolve a longstanding issue in the theory of legal punishment. The unjustified actor who believes she is justified seems to deserve an acquittal, while the justified actor who does not know he is justified seems to deserve conviction. But we face a dilemma: we seem to have to acquit both or convict both. This Article shows a principled way to rule the mistakenly unjustified actor within, and the mistakenly justified actor out …

Design And Evaluation Of Distributed Algorithms For Placement Of Network Services, Todd Sproull Jan 2009

Design And Evaluation Of Distributed Algorithms For Placement Of Network Services, Todd Sproull

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

Network services play an important role in the Internet today. They serve as data caches for websites, servers for multiplayer games and relay nodes for Voice over IP: VoIP) conversations. While much research has focused on the design of such services, little attention has been focused on their actual placement. This placement can impact the quality of the service, especially if low latency is a requirement. These services can be located on nodes in the network itself, making these nodes supernodes. Typically supernodes are selected in either a proprietary or ad hoc fashion, where a study of this placement is …

Computational And Experimental Investigation Of Allosteric Communication In The Transcriptional Regulator Nikr, Michael Bradley Jan 2009

Computational And Experimental Investigation Of Allosteric Communication In The Transcriptional Regulator Nikr, Michael Bradley

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

The Ni2+ and DNA binding protein NikR is involved in nickel regulation in Escherichia coli through transcriptional repression of the NikABCDE nickel permease. NikR is a homotetramer and each chain contains both a DNA binding ribbon-helix-helix: RHH) domain and a Ni2+ binding regulatory ACT: aspartokinase, chorismate mutase, TyrA) fold. Work herein combines computational modeling of NikR structure with experimental studies aimed at understanding allosteric communication between the ACT and RHH domains. Hydrogen/deuterium exchange mass spectrometry shows a Ni2+ specific NikR conformational change relative to bound Cu2+, Co2+, and Zn2+. Concurrent coordination geometry and in vivo repressor function studies show that …

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

In this dissertation, I examine the process of state formation during the Viking/Medieval transition: c. 1050 A.D.) as it took place in the North Atlantic region. Specifically, I use paleoethnobotanical analysis of remains from Quoygrew farm, an archaeological site located on Westray in the Orkney Islands, to examine the reciprocal relationship between farm production and changes associated with state formation and the Viking/Medieval transition. Towards this goal, I analyzed carbonized plant remains from midden contexts as well as from floor deposits, hearths, pit fills, and dumps. Seed densities and distributions reveal a closely integrated system of farm production including cereal …

Identification And Characterization Of A Xylosylphosphotransferase Of Cryptococcus Neoformans, Morgann Reilly Jan 2009

Identification And Characterization Of A Xylosylphosphotransferase Of Cryptococcus Neoformans, Morgann Reilly

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

Cryptococcus neoformans is an environmental yeast and an opportunistic pathogen capable of causing a meningoencephalitis in human hosts. The organism produces an extensive polysaccharide capsule that is unique among pathogenic fungi and absolutely required for its virulence. Work in the Doering laboratory on the capsule and other glycoconjugates of C. neoformans has focused on the identification of glycosyltransferases, enzymes that catalyze the transfer of a sugar moiety from an active donor to a specific acceptor, creating a particular linkage. Previous work demonstrated that xylose residues, derived from the nucleotide sugar UDP-xylose, are necessary for cryptococcal virulence. An assay to detect …

The Mechanisms And Roles Of Feedback Loops For Visual Processing, Jing Shao Jan 2009

The Mechanisms And Roles Of Feedback Loops For Visual Processing, Jing Shao

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

Signal flow in the brain is not unidirectional; feedback represents a key element in neural signal processing. To address the question on how do neural feedback loops work in terms of synapses, microcircuitry, and systems dynamics, we developed a chick midbrain slice preparation to study and characterize one important feedback loop within the avian visual system: isthmotectal feedbackloop. The isthmotectal feedback loop consists of the optic tectum: OT) and three nucleus isthmi: Imc, Ipc and SLu. The tectal layer 10 neurons project to ipsilateral Imc, Ipc and SLu in a topographic way. In turn Ipc and SLu send back topographical: …

Natural Disorder: The Animal Image In French And British Art Before Darwin, C. 1790-1859, Noelle Paulson

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

This study of the animal form in French and British art reveals humanity's shifting self-image as new theories of species transmutation replaced hierarchical models of nature in the half-century before the publication of Charles Darwin's On the Origin of Species in 1859. To assert various qualities of difference, distance, similitude, and proximity between species, visual artists represented animals either in humanized guises or in contexts of encounter with humans. Animal imagery was especially malleable during this period when science and pseudo-science both confronted the possibility that species were susceptible to gradual change over time rather than fixed in form since …

Numerical Drag Reduction Studies On Generic Truck, Miles Bellman Jan 2009

Numerical Drag Reduction Studies On Generic Truck, Miles Bellman

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

Drag reduction studies on generic truck models using passive shape optimization and active flow control are studied using numerical methods. A genetic algorithm is used to find optimal truck front shapes for reduced drag. The best shape found gives a 3.4% drag reduction. Active flow control is used to reduce drag by using oscillatory synthetic jet actuators on a generic truck body, a D-shaped bluff body, and the Ahmed body. Experimental data is available for these three configurations without and with active flow control. Actuators at the back of the trucks energize separating boundary layers and delay the shedding of …

Fear And Death In Plato, Emily Austin Jan 2009

Fear And Death In Plato, Emily Austin

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

Plato argues that a perfectly virtuous individual will not fear her own death, nor will she fear or grieve the death of a loved one. In Plato's ideal society, citizens are taught not to fear death and are prohibited from public manifestations of grief. It is by no means self-evident, however, that ridding oneself of the fear of death, even if possible, is ethically or psychologically beneficial. This dissertation examines why Plato thinks that the fear of death is morally inappropriate, why he believes it is nevertheless difficult to overcome, and why he thinks acquiring and sustaining the appropriate attitudes …

An Investigation Of Acetobacter Aceti N5-Carboxyaminoimidazole Ribonucleotide Mutase And Its Pure-Purk Operon, Charles Constantine Jan 2009

An Investigation Of Acetobacter Aceti N5-Carboxyaminoimidazole Ribonucleotide Mutase And Its Pure-Purk Operon, Charles Constantine

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

Acetobacter aceti oxidizes ethanol to acetic acid. While the membrane-permeable acetic acid is toxic to many bacteria, A. aceti survives exposure to acetic acid by tolerating cytoplasmic acidification. The ability to tolerate an acidic cytoplasm suggests that proteins from A. aceti are unusually suited to function in an acidic environment. The ability to tolerate an acidic cytoplasm raises additional questions about biosynthetic pathways that employ acid-labile intermediates. To examine how A. aceti metabolism may have adapted to function under acidic conditions, a biosynthetic conversion involving an acid-labile metabolite has been selected for study. The enzyme N5-carboxyaminoimidazole ribonucleotide mutase: PurE) catalyzes …
