Theses

This research was performed to assess the efficacy of tube-based field portable x-ray fluorescence (FXPXRF) devices to evaluate RCRA heavy metal concentrations in children's products and determine potential hazardous waste toxicity characteristics by comparative analysis to inductively coupled plasma (ICP) yields per SW6010B. Sample sets consisting of wood, plastic, rubber, bulk, plated/coated, and metal matrices were purchased, size-reduced as necessary and directly analyzed three-times for 120 seconds each via FPXRF operated in the Consumer Goods/Test All mode. Subsequently, the same samples were prepared in accordance to SW3050B and analyzed via ICP at an accredited contract laboratory. Side-by-side results analysis indicates …

Designing A Cell Phone Application To Alert And Report Drinking Water Quality To South Africans, Deana Brown Jan 2009

Designing A Cell Phone Application To Alert And Report Drinking Water Quality To South Africans, Deana Brown

Theses

Drinking water quality, especially in many parts of South Africa, is far below acceptable standards. With an annual estimate of 43, 000 deaths from diarrheal diseases, 3 million cases of illness and treatment costs of over half a billion US dollars, the impact is critical (Mackintosh & Colvin, 2003). To address this issue the Aquatest project seeks to develop a simplified low-cost water quality test kit and information management solution. This would allow Water Service Providers, especially in rural areas, to monitor water quality and distribute test data to the necessary parties - Water Service Authorities and consumers. This research …

Transition Programs In Freshman Centers: Best Practice When Addressing The Transition From Middle School To High School, Timothy W. Smith

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Establishing effective transition programs for students entering high school is an ongoing process. The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore best practices transition programs employ to aid student's success. The participants in this study were six administrators chosen from a population of administrators at 60 central Indiana high schools. The administrators in this study were interviewed to determine what their schools were currently doing to ensure successful student transition from the middle school to high school. Each face-to-face interview was tape recorded, transcribed, and then analyzed to determine practices that influenced their perceived success. Grounded theory, with the …

Potential Export Of Unattached Benthic Macroalgae To The Deep Sea Through Wind Driven Langmuir Circulation, H. M. Dierssen, Richard C. Zimmerman, Lisa A. Drake, David J. Burdige Jan 2009

Potential Export Of Unattached Benthic Macroalgae To The Deep Sea Through Wind Driven Langmuir Circulation, H. M. Dierssen, Richard C. Zimmerman, Lisa A. Drake, David J. Burdige

OES Faculty Publications

Carbon export to the deep sea is conventionally attributed to the sinking of open ocean phytoplankton. Here, we report a Langmuir supercell event driven by high winds across the shallow Great Bahama Bank that organized benthic non-attached macroalgae, Colpomenia sp., into visible windrows on the seafloor. Ocean color satellite imagery obtained before and after the windrows revealed a 588 km2 patch that rapidly shifted from highly productive macroalgae to bare sand. We assess a number of possible fates for this macroalgae and contend that this event potentially transported negatively buoyant macroalgae to the deep Tongue of the Ocean …

Material Flow And Microstructure Evolution In Friction Stir Welding Of Aa6111 Alloy Sheets, Manasij Kumar Yadava Jan 2009

Material Flow And Microstructure Evolution In Friction Stir Welding Of Aa6111 Alloy Sheets, Manasij Kumar Yadava

Doctoral Dissertations

"Material flow and microstructure evolution are the two important aspects of the Friction stir welding (FSW) technique, which control the properties and performance of the friction stir welds. The present work investigates these two aspects of the FSW with main emphasis on the friction stir lap joints (FSLJs) on the AA6111 sheets. Due to the characteristic material flow during FSW, the faying surfaces in FSLPs are deposited in and around the weld nugget and create unavoidable defects. These defects reduce the load carrying thickness of the joints by providing an easy path for the weld failure. Therefore, to control the …

Sentiment Classification Of Reviews Using Sentiwordnet, Bruno Ohana, Brendan Tierney Jan 2009

Sentiment Classification Of Reviews Using Sentiwordnet, Bruno Ohana, Brendan Tierney

Conference papers

Sentiment classification concerns the use of automatic methods for predicting the orientation of subjective content on text documents, with applications on a number of areas including recommender and advertising systems, customer intelligence and information retrieval. SentiWordNet is an opinion lexicon derived from the WordNet database where each term is associated with numerical scores indicating positive and negative sentiment information. This research presents the results of applying the SentiWordNet lexical resource to the problem of automatic sentiment classification of film reviews. Our approach comprises counting positive and negative term scores to determine sentiment orientation, and an improvement is presented by building …

The Third Space: The Use Of Self-Study To Examine The Culture Of A Science Classroom, Dashia M. Magee Jan 2009

The Third Space: The Use Of Self-Study To Examine The Culture Of A Science Classroom, Dashia M. Magee

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Science educators are in the position to create bridges between their students and the world of science (Aikenhead, 1996, 1999). This connection has often been described as the third space (Bhabha, 1994; Moje, Collazo, Carrillo, & Marx, 2001; Wallace, 2004), which is represented as a combination or a meeting of the students' world and the world of science. In this study, I examined my role in creating the third space through the use of self-study. Self-study is a form of research, educators use to understand their practice (Austin & Senese, 2004; Loughran, 2004; Northfield & Loughran, 1996). It is a …

Analysis Of The Expression Of Selected Suppressors Of Cytokine Signaling, Socs1 And Socs3, Genes In Response To Limb Amputation In Xenopus Laevis, Lubna Fawzi Abu-Niaaj

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Identification of genes that are possibly stimulators or inhibitors in limb regeneration in vertebrates is important in understanding the regeneration mechanism and the cause of regeneration failure in non-regenerative structures. It is proposed that the development of the immune system of adult anurans modifies the capacity of limb regeneration. This modulation is mainly due to the participation of variety of immune cells in the response to inflammation caused by amputation. The influence of cytokines and their modulators including S uppressors o f C ytokine S ignaling (SOCS) proteins is critical in determining the nature of tissue response to injury and …

Efficient Valid Scope Computation For Location-Dependent Spatial Queries In Mobile And Wireless Environments, Ken C. K. Lee, Wang-Chien Lee, Hong Va Leong, Brandon Unger, Baihua Zheng

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In mobile and wireless environments, mobile clients can access information with respect to their locations by submitting Location-Dependent Spatial Queries (LDSQs) to Location-Based Service (LBS) servers. Owing to scarce wireless channel bandwidth and limited client battery life, frequent LDSQ submission from clients must be avoided. Observing that LDSQs issued from similar client positions would normally return the same results, we explore the idea of valid scope, that represents a spatial area in which a set of LDSQs will retrieve exactly the same query results. With a valid scope derived and an LDSQ result cached at the client side, a client …

The Coroner’S Inquest: Ecuador’S Default And Sovereign Bond Documentation, Mitu Gulati, Lee C. Buchheit Jan 2009

The Coroner’S Inquest: Ecuador’S Default And Sovereign Bond Documentation, Mitu Gulati, Lee C. Buchheit

Faculty Scholarship

Conventional wisdom is that sovereigns will rarely, if ever, default on their external debts in circumstances where it is clear that they have the capacity to pay. The first line of defense against the errant sovereign is its concern about reputation. It may have to tap the external debt markets again in the future; and there is the fear that the markets will extract revenge. But reputational constraints do not always work because some governments heavily discount future costs in favor of current benefits. When reputational constraints fail, however, a second line of defense is supposed to come into play. …

Signal Detection With Criterion Noise: Applications To Recognition Memory, Aaron S. Benjamin, Michael Diaz, Wee, Serena Jan 2009

Signal Detection With Criterion Noise: Applications To Recognition Memory, Aaron S. Benjamin, Michael Diaz, Wee, Serena

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

A tacit but fundamental assumption of the theory of signal detection is that criterion placement is a noise-free process. This article challenges that assumption on theoretical and empirical grounds and presents the noisy decision theory of signal detection (ND-TSD). Generalized equations for the isosensitivity function and for measures of discrimination incorporating criterion variability are derived, and the model's relationship with extant models of decision making in discrimination tasks is examined, An experiment evaluating recognition memory for ensembles of word stimuli revealed that criterion noise is not trivial in magnitude and contributes substantially to variance in the slope of the isosensitivity …

Update Mental Pictures Of Rural China, Forrest Zhang, John A. Donaldson Jan 2009

Update Mental Pictures Of Rural China, Forrest Zhang, John A. Donaldson

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Women in straw hats stoop over water-logged plots, working together to plant rice seedlings. A weather-worn man trudges behind an ox ploughing his family's field. Farmers throw newly harvested grain in the air so the wind can carry off the chaff. Tour buses navigate past grain carefully laid out on the black-topped road to dry. Though picturesque, these images of rural China perpetuate stereotypes of a conservative culture resistant to change - and affect public policy.

Introduction, Justin O'Connor, Lily Kong Jan 2009

Introduction, Justin O'Connor, Lily Kong

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

The cultural and creative industries have become increasingly prominent in many policy agendas in recent years. Not only have governments identified the growing consumer potential for cultural/creative industry products in the home market, they have also seen the creative industry agenda as central to the growth of external markets. This agenda stresses creativity, innovation, small business growth, and access to global markets—all central to a wider agenda of moving from cheap manufacture towards high value-added products and services. The increasing importance of cultural and creative industries in national and city policy agendas is evident in Hong Kong, Singapore, Taiwan, South …

Traditions Of Philanthropic Order, Christine Dunn Henderson Jan 2009

Traditions Of Philanthropic Order, Christine Dunn Henderson

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Individuals act more or less simultaneously as economic agents, citizens, and participants in civil society. Their interactions and their ways of fulfilling these roles take many forms. Not all of them can be said to be self-organizing, yet in several instances patterns of organization emerge spontaneously without being deliberately designed. Of course, the market economy—or “catallaxy,” as F. A. Hayek called it—remains the best example of such “spontaneous orders.” But there are others. Gus diZerega (2000), for example, has identified science and democracy as being similarly constituted by self-referential, self-organizing (some authors prefer the term autopoietic) processes. In this paper …

Two Constructions Of Libertarianism, Chandran Kukathas Jan 2009

Two Constructions Of Libertarianism, Chandran Kukathas

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

The libertarian first principle—a belief in individual freedom—can lead to two different and not necessarily acceptable societies from the standpoint of liberty. One is the “Union of Liberty,” in which communities, associations, and intermediate bodies are held to rigorous standards of voluntariness (and thus face sharp limits on their internal associational freedom because of the knowledge that children will be born into them). In the other, the “Federation of Liberty,” they are not (thereby allowing children to be born into locally unfree environments). While in any free society individuals may voluntarily join together and waive some of their rights (in institutions …

Making Sustainable Creative/Cultural Space In Shanghai And Singapore, Lily Kong Jan 2009

Making Sustainable Creative/Cultural Space In Shanghai And Singapore, Lily Kong

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Shanghai and Singapore are two economically vibrant Asian cities that have recently adopted creative/cultural economy strategies. In this article I examine new spatial expressions of cultural and economic interests in the two cities: state-vaunted cultural edifices and organically evolved cultural spaces. I discuss the simultaneous precariousness and sustainability of these spaces, focusing on Shanghai's Grand Theatre and Moganshan Lu and on Singapore's Esplanade-Theatres by the Bay and Wessex Estate. Their cultural sustainability is understood as their ability to support the development of indigenous content and local idioms in artistic work. Their social sustainability is examined in terms of the social …

International Evidence On Analyst Monitoring And Earnings Management: The Roles Of Corporate Disclosure And National Culture, Soongsoo Han, Tony Kang, Gerald Lobo, Yong Keun Yoo

Research Collection School Of Accountancy

We examine country-level determinants of private information search incentives, and whether analysts’ role in constraining managers’ opportunistic earnings management varies across countries. In a sample of 31,312 firm-year observations originating from 30 countries, we document that: (1) analyst coverage is negatively (positively) related to the level of corporate disclosure (how secretive the national culture is); (2) the negative association between analyst coverage and earnings management is observed in stronger investor protection countries but not in weaker investor protection countries; and (3) analyst monitoring fails to mitigate culturedriven earnings manipulations in countries with more individualistic and uncertainty-tolerant cultures. Taken together, financial …
