Calreticulin And Its Role In Collagen Regulation, Lauren Van Duyn Jan 2009

Calreticulin And Its Role In Collagen Regulation, Lauren Van Duyn

All ETDs from UAB

Calreticulin (CRT), classically known for its chaperone functions in the endoplasmic reticulum and as a calcium regulator, also is found on the cell surface and in the extracellular matrix. It is involved in many cellular processes including signaling, adhesion, migration, apoptotic cell clearance, gene regulation, and production of a fibronectin matrix. CRT has been suggested to play a role in wound healing and fibrosis. Therefore, these studies investigated the role of CRT in collagen production, an important extracellular matrix molecule in wounding and fibrosis. We demonstrated that CRT regulates collagen through transcription, secretion, and processing. We also investigated the role …

International Health Care Convergence: The Benefits And Burdens Of Market-Driven Standardization, Nathan Cortez Jan 2009

International Health Care Convergence: The Benefits And Burdens Of Market-Driven Standardization, Nathan Cortez

Faculty Journal Articles and Book Chapters

For over thirty years, health scholars have debated whether health care policies are converging, or becoming more alike, internationally. Convergence theories have always been particularly appealing in health care. Most countries generally struggle with the same challenges: how to provide quality care, to as many people as possible, for a reasonable price. Moreover, modern scientific medicine has not only influenced how countries around the world provide and regulate health care, but has also driven rising patient expectations. These commonalities invite theories of convergence: If policymakers in different jurisdictions face similar challenges, why wouldn't they adopt roughly similar solutions?

In this …

'De Facto Sovereignty': Boumediene And Beyond, Anthony J. Colangelo Jan 2009

'De Facto Sovereignty': Boumediene And Beyond, Anthony J. Colangelo

Faculty Journal Articles and Book Chapters

In Boumediene v. Bush, which grants non-citizens detained at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, constitutional habeas corpus privileges the Supreme Court took notice that the United States maintains "de facto sovereignty" over that territory. As its sole precedential support, the Court cited a case that never mentions the term de facto sovereignty. What is this concept? How important is it to the Court's holding? Did the Court get the concept right given its longstanding usage and meaning in Supreme Court precedent? And what can de facto sovereignty tell us about when the Court will find habeas to extend to other situations …

Survey Study Of The Relationship Between Parents' And Teachers' Perceptions Of What Constitutes Effective School -To -Home Communications, Jill L. Murphy

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Even though guidelines at a suburban elementary school in Georgia were in place for teachers regarding frequency and methods of parent communication, it was unclear if these methods were being used consistently and effectively. Research has shown that effective communication increases student achievement, but there is a lack of research examining communication preferences of teachers and parents. Therefore, this study evaluated current practices by comparing parents' and teachers' perceptions of what constitutes effective school-to-home communications. The researcher administered questionnaires to a random sample of teachers and parents of 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students to compare their perceptions of the …

An Examination Of Differences Between Online Learning For Hispanic And Caucasian Community College Students, Edward J. Beyer

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Hispanic students are enrolling in community colleges at an increasing rate, and they do not succeed in community college online courses at a rate comparable to Caucasian students. Increasing Hispanic success in online education could potentially enhance their socioeconomic status. Drawing from the theoretical frameworks of andragogy and constructivism, the purpose of this case study was to examine differences between Hispanic and Caucasian students in online learning and identify factors that might contribute to the reported differences in success across Hispanic and Caucasian online students. Research questions contrasted the impact of course design, Internet access, learning preferences, and motivation on …

Regional And Foreign Accent Processing In English: Can Listeners Adapt?, Caroline Floccia, Joseph Butler, Jeremy Goslin, Lucy Ellis Jan 2009

Regional And Foreign Accent Processing In English: Can Listeners Adapt?, Caroline Floccia, Joseph Butler, Jeremy Goslin, Lucy Ellis

School of Psychology

Recent data suggest that the first presentation of a foreign accent triggers a delay in word identification, followed by a subsequent adaptation. This study examines under what conditions the delay resumes to baseline level. The delay will be experimentally induced by the presentation of sentences spoken to listeners in a foreign or a regional accent as part of a lexical decision task for words placed at the end of sentences. Using a blocked design of accents presentation, Experiment 1 shows that accent changes cause a temporary perturbation in reaction times, followed by a smaller but long-lasting delay. Experiment 2 shows …

Exploring The Provision Of High Dependency Care In Children's Wards, Margaret Jane Doman Jan 2009

Exploring The Provision Of High Dependency Care In Children's Wards, Margaret Jane Doman

Other Faculty of Health Theses

Aim The aim of this qualitative research study was to explore the provision of high dependency care in children's wards in SW England and to identify and evaluate individual and organisational factors influencing this care. Background Concerns about paediatric intensive care have been reported, leading to the implementation of many changes in practice. High dependency care, which is usually provided on children's wards, is included in the organisational framework for critical care, but has received far less attention. Definitions and recommendations lack clarity, which could lead to difficulties in determining the most appropriate environment, staffing and equipment for care provision. …

Antitrust In A Globalized Economy: The Unique Enforcement Challenges Faced By Small And Developing Jurisdictions, Michal S. Gal

Part II analyzes the current international antitrust regime from a wider perspective that incorporates the enforcement challenges faced by small and developing jurisdictions. Part III builds upon these findings and …

Notice Otherwise Given: Will In Absentia Trials At The Special Tribunal For Lebanon Violate Human Rights?, Chris Jenks

Fordham International Law Journal

This Article examines whether the Special Tribunal for Lebanon's ("STL's") in absentia trial provisions violate human right norms and, if so, whether the right to tribunal-appointed counsel or to retrial remedies any such violation. Part I explains the operation of the STL, with particular attention drawn to the funding difficulties the tribunal faces, and details the STL's in absentia trial provisions and subsequent right to counsel and retrial. Part II compares the in absentia trial provisions of the STL to those of other tribunals to demonstrate that the STL's in absentia trial provisions represent a radical departure from prior law. …

Japan's New Criminal Jury Trial System: In Need Of More Transparency, More Access, And More Time, Matthew J. Wilson Jan 2009

Japan's New Criminal Jury Trial System: In Need Of More Transparency, More Access, And More Time, Matthew J. Wilson

Fordham International Law Journal

The lay judge system has considerable potential both in concept and form. To realize its full potential, the system needs to overcome various structural impediments and cultural challenges. This Article further contributes to the emerging discussion by detailing three related areas that merit attention and reform if the system is going to realize its full potential. Namely, the lay judge system would benefit from 1) increased transparency by eliminating punitive measures against citizen judges desiring to freely speak about the trial proceedings or deliberation process oncle the trial is complete; 2) impoved access to the interrogation of detained suspects and …
