Catholic Missionaries In Africa: The White Fathers In The Belgian Congo 1950-1955, Kathryn Rountree Jan 2009

Catholic Missionaries In Africa: The White Fathers In The Belgian Congo 1950-1955, Kathryn Rountree

LSU Master's Theses

Catholic missionaries played an important role in the colonial scramble in Africa and the subsequent years. They served as educators and medical support for the state in many cases. The state relied on missionaries to staff schools, educate the population, and aid in the civilization of the Africans. In the Belgian Congo, Catholic missionaries - specifically the Society of Missionaries of Africa or White Fathers - played an especially important role as agents of evangelization and European civilization. The Belgian state relied heavily (and provided subsidies) on missionaries to educate the native people. Through education and medical help, missionaries fostered …

Sociolinguistic Characteristics Of The Latino Population In The Baton Rouge Metro Area, Dally Campos Molina Jan 2009

Sociolinguistic Characteristics Of The Latino Population In The Baton Rouge Metro Area, Dally Campos Molina

LSU Master's Theses

This thesis examines sociolinguistic characteristics of the Latino population in the Baton Rouge metro area and has a manifold purpose. The main purpose of the study is to determine whether Latinos consider that the way they speak their native language –Spanish– has changed as a consequence of their living in Baton Rouge, i.e., the United States. A questionnaire was applied to 106 Latinos in Baton Rouge, 58 male and 48 female, between the ages of 18 and 71 years old, from several socioeconomic backgrounds (white collar workers, blue collar workers, etc.). They represent 14 Latin American countries. I tested a …

Beyond Mediation: Thinking The Computer Otherwise, David J. Gunkel Jan 2009

Beyond Mediation: Thinking The Computer Otherwise, David J. Gunkel

Faculty Articles, Papers, and Other Scholarship

Whatever Media Studies 2.0 involves, one thing is certain, there is a need to confront and deal with new technologies, most notably computers and computer networks. Despite the fact that the discipline has largely marginalized these innovations, there has been some effort to incorporate the computer into both the theories and practices of media studies. This has been accomplished, at least in the United States, through the development of what is now called computer-mediated communication (CMC). CMC, which effectively understands the computer as a medium of human communication, does not necessarily institute a significant paradigm shift in media studies but …

Immunity And Justice For All: Has The Second Circuit Overextended The Doctrine Of Absolute Immunity By Applying It To Arbitration Witnesses, W. Monroe Bonnheim Jan 2009

Immunity And Justice For All: Has The Second Circuit Overextended The Doctrine Of Absolute Immunity By Applying It To Arbitration Witnesses, W. Monroe Bonnheim

Journal of Dispute Resolution

In Rolon v. Henneman, the Second Circuit Court of Appeals considered whether absolute immunity should apply to witnesses in an arbitration proceeding. The common law doctrine of absolute immunity from civil liability for judges has a long pedigree dating back to English courts. When the United States Supreme Court reaffirmed the doctrine after Congress passed 42 U.S.C. § 1983, the Court cautioned against extending the doctrine beyond judges. Since then, however, the doctrine has been extended to prosecutors and witnesses at public trials, and more recently, to arbitrators and arbitral institutions. Whether absolute immunity should be further extended to witnesses …

Expansion Of Arbitral Immunity: Is Absolute Immunity A Foregone Conclusion, The, Jenny Brown Jan 2009

Expansion Of Arbitral Immunity: Is Absolute Immunity A Foregone Conclusion, The, Jenny Brown

Journal of Dispute Resolution

With the increased use of arbitration in recent years, the concept of judicial immunity has expanded its scope to include arbitrators. As a result, states are currently enacting their own legislation regarding arbitrator immunity and are looking for guidance in how to do so. In response, the National Conference of Commissioners on State Laws has drafted two model acts, referred to as the Uniform Arbitration Act and the Revised Uniform Arbitration Act for states to utilize in formulating their own arbitration laws. Currently the Uniform Arbitration Act has been adopted in thirteen states and is being considered in four other …

Curriculum-based measures of reading and writing collected three times within the school year were utilized as the independent variables for predicting the dependent variables. Writing samples were scored using 9 indices of writing. Results from a state standardized assessment (iLEAP) were used as the dependent variables. The study found reliability coefficients for writing indices to be consistent with …

Interrogation And Silence: A Comparative Study, Craig M. Bradley Jan 2009

Interrogation And Silence: A Comparative Study, Craig M. Bradley

Articles by Maurer Faculty

This article examines interrogation practices in detail in three systems: the American, the English (and Welsh), and the Canadian while also discussing rules from various other countries. It considers when the Miranda-type warnings (required in all three systems) must be given and when suspects will be deemed to have waived their rights. This article further discusses how reliability and voluntariness of confession is assured. Finally, a particular emphasis is placed on the issue of when a suspect's silence during interrogation may be used against him in court. The article concludes that American courts have not done enough to ensure reliability …

Writers On Writing Instruction: Experiences And Advice From Professional Writers, Sheri Allen Jan 2009

Writers On Writing Instruction: Experiences And Advice From Professional Writers, Sheri Allen

LSU Master's Theses

In examining the childhood experiences of professional authors, this qualitative research found some similarities: voracious reading, writing for pleasure, early awards and publishing, mentors, meaningful lessons from teachers, and journal writing. Common areas were found among the participants’ advice for writing teachers as well, and the suggestions were organized into six general themes: teaching the fundamentals, getting ideas down before revising, focusing on creativity, teaching the reading-writing relationship, providing rewards like positive feedback, and being a writing role model. Suggestions were offered on how to bring this advice into the classroom.

Nutrition And Eating Habits In Adolescent Television Programs: A Content Analysis Of Food And Beverage Consumption On Popular Teen Television, Carly Nicole Dickson Jan 2009

Nutrition And Eating Habits In Adolescent Television Programs: A Content Analysis Of Food And Beverage Consumption On Popular Teen Television, Carly Nicole Dickson

LSU Master's Theses

Media research often argues that viewing certain media can significantly increase the likelihood someone will develop an eating disorder or become obese. This study uses social cognitive and drama theory to discuss how adolescents may learn nutrition information and eating habits by watching television programs. Since adolescence is when people form eating habits, this exploratory study will analyze the nutrition content in three top teen television shows. This quantitative content analysis found that the characters in teen television primarily have a healthy body size but consume unhealthy items. This may be sending a message to adolescents that unhealthy nutrition maintains …

Making People Illegal: What Globalization Means For Migration And Law, Catherine Dauvergne Jan 2009

Making People Illegal: What Globalization Means For Migration And Law, Catherine Dauvergne

All Faculty Publications

This book examines the relationship between illegal migration and globalization. Under the pressures of globalizing forces, migration law is transformed into the last bastion of sovereignty. This explains the worldwide crackdown on extra-legal migration and informs the shape this crackdown is taking. It also means that migration law reflects key facets of globalization and addresses the central debates of globalization theory. This book looks at various migration law settings, asserting that differing but related globalization effects are discernible at each location. The ‘core samples’ interrogated in the book are drawn from refugee law, illegal labor migration, human trafficking, security issues …

Applying The Isotope Pairing Technique To Evaluate How Water Temperature And Habitat Type Influence Denitrification Estimates In Breton Sound, Louisiana, Peter L. Lenaker Jan 2009

Applying The Isotope Pairing Technique To Evaluate How Water Temperature And Habitat Type Influence Denitrification Estimates In Breton Sound, Louisiana, Peter L. Lenaker

LSU Master's Theses

The upper Breton Sound estuary was hydrologically reconnected to the Mississippi River via the Caernarvon freshwater diversion structure in 1991. The Caernarvon structure can provide controlled freshwater pulses to the upper Breton Sound estuarine ecosystem, replicating historic freshwater pulsed events, although the original authorization was to control salinity isohalines at specific locations in the estuary. However, unlike historic freshwater pulsed events prior to the construction of levees, the current freshwater pulse contains an unprecedented amount of inorganic nitrogen, predominately as nitrate (annual average 71.4 µM NO3-). Denitrification is a microbial process, which can potentially remove excess nitrate entering coastal Louisiana …

The Aerodynamics Of The Knuckleball Pitch: An Experimental Investigation Into The Effects That The Seam And Slow Rotation Have On A Baseball, Michael Patrick Morrissey Jan 2009

The Aerodynamics Of The Knuckleball Pitch: An Experimental Investigation Into The Effects That The Seam And Slow Rotation Have On A Baseball, Michael Patrick Morrissey

Master's Theses (2009 -)

There has been plenty of research on the fluid dynamic effects on different spheres, including sports balls, such as baseballs. Baseball pitches have different velocities, rotation rates and orientations which will cause the baseball to move in different directions. There has also been plenty of research on the aerodynamics of curveballs, but not nearly as much on knuckleballs. The difference between the two is that the knuckleball has a much slower rotation rate and a different initial orientation. This causes the baseball to "knuckle," or moving erratically. This pitch in baseball is one of the hardest to pitch, hit, catch, …

Perfection In Paul: Snapshot Of A Stand-Off, Kent Yinger Jan 2009

Perfection In Paul: Snapshot Of A Stand-Off, Kent Yinger

Faculty Publications - Portland Seminary

Following a review of scholarship on ‘perfection’ in Pauline soteriology, this paper will document the current stand-off among Pauline scholars as to whether Paul requires (or thinks Jewish soteriology requires) perfect Law-keeping -- often connected with post-Sanders’ debates over 1st century Jewish soteriology. Along the way it will reflect on the meaning of perfection language in the various corpora. The paper will then suggest that resolving this issue remains crucial for unraveling Pauline soteriology.

A Hypergraph Regularity Method For Linear Hypergraphs, Shoaib Amjad Khan Jan 2009

A Hypergraph Regularity Method For Linear Hypergraphs, Shoaib Amjad Khan

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Szemerédi's Regularity Lemma is powerful tool in Graph Theory, yielding many applications in areas such as Extremal Graph Theory, Combinatorial Number Theory and Theoretical Computer Science. Strong hypergraph extensions of graph regularity techniques were recently given by Nagle, Rödl, Schacht and Skokan, by W.T. Gowers, and subsequently, by T. Tao. These extensions have yielded quite a few non-trivial applications to Extremal Hypergraph Theory, Combinatorial Number Theory and Theoretical Computer Science. A main drawback to the hypergraph regularity techniques above is that they are highly technical. In this thesis, we consider a less technical version of hypergraph regularity which more directly …

Finding Confucianism In Scientology: A Comparative Analysis, John Albert Kieffer Jan 2009

Finding Confucianism In Scientology: A Comparative Analysis, John Albert Kieffer

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Scientology holds considerable interest for scholars of new religious movements. As such, this study aims to contribute new data and insight to ongoing theoretical work within this area of religious studies scholarship. Engaged in this inquiry are the similarities between Scientology, the new religious movement founded in 1951 by L. Ron Hubbard (1911-1986), and the Chinese religion, Confucianism, which originates with the teachings of Confucius (551-479 BCE). Though Hubbard admits being influenced by eastern thinking such as Buddhism and Daoism in shaping his worldview, he specifically discounts Confucius as relevant in this regard. However, through comparisons between Scientology and Confucianism, …

Intervention In Painting By Marlene Dumas With Titles Of Engagement: Ryman's Brides, Reinhardt's Daughter And Stern, Susan King Klinkenberg Jan 2009

Intervention In Painting By Marlene Dumas With Titles Of Engagement: Ryman's Brides, Reinhardt's Daughter And Stern, Susan King Klinkenberg

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Marlene Dumas is known for her portraits and figurative paintings and drawings. This study focuses on three paintings by Dumas that reference male icons of art: Stern (2004), Ryman's Brides (1997), and Reinhardt's Daughter (1994). In referencing Ad Reinhardt, Robert Ryman and in the case of Stern, Gerhard Richter, Dumas engages with each artist and the history of painting in specific ways. As this thesis title indicates, I argue that Dumas uses artistic allusion pervasively throughout her oeuvre to conduct an intervention in painting. I propose that this interposition is a way to navigate and question the canon, while strengthening …

First-Principles Studies Of Shock-Induced Phenomena In Energetic Materials, Aaron Christopher Landerville Jan 2009

First-Principles Studies Of Shock-Induced Phenomena In Energetic Materials, Aaron Christopher Landerville

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

An understanding of the atomic-scale features of chemical and physical processes taking place behind the shockwave front will help in addressing some of the major challenges in energetic materials research. The high pressure shockwave environment can be simulated using computational techniques to predict mechanical and chemical properties of a shocked material. Density functional theory calculations were performed to investigate uniaxial compressions of diamond and both hydrostatic and uniaxial compressions of TATB and NEST-1. For diamond, we calculated shear stresses for uniaxial compressions in the , , and directions and discovered the anomalous elastic regime which is responsible for the significant …

Shadows Fall On Main Street: Film Noir Travels Out Of The City, Anthony Laporte Jan 2009

Shadows Fall On Main Street: Film Noir Travels Out Of The City, Anthony Laporte

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

After World War II, film audiences of American crime dramas, later termed film noirs, witnessed the relocation of several film narratives to settings outside of the traditional urban environment. These films began to defy the conventional notion that crime only exists in densely populated cities and began to incorporate alternative spaces, like suburban communities, small towns, and the open road, to tell their stories. This thesis examines how social and geographical spaces contribute to, rather than oppose, a noir sensibility by employing an intertextual analysis of three film noirs set in locations out of the city: Fallen Angel, The Stranger, …

“You‟Re Going To Hollywood!”: Gender And Race Surveillance And Accountability In American Idol Contestant‟S Performances, Amanda Leblanc Jan 2009

“You‟Re Going To Hollywood!”: Gender And Race Surveillance And Accountability In American Idol Contestant‟S Performances, Amanda Leblanc

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This paper examines how the reality competition television program American Idol serves to reinforce gendered, racialized and heteronormative stereotypes, particularly for female contestants. Through its "democratic" style of public audience voting, those competitors who not only sing well, but also perform their gender and race to standards which have been deemed by the judges to be appropriate mainstream American culture, prove to be the most successful on the program. Through a content analysis of the show's first four seasons, I find that those female contestants who begin their tenure in the contest by fitting into categories which would be considered …
