Emerging Adulthood In India, Liann Nicole Seiter Nov 2009

Emerging Adulthood In India, Liann Nicole Seiter

Theses and Dissertations

This paper explores the nature of emerging adulthood in Southern India. Survey data was collected from 450 college students in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, India and 100 non-students from rural villages surrounding Coimbatore. Unlike American samples, the majority of the 18- to 26-year-olds studied felt that they had achieved adulthood. The sample emphasized attributes needed to fulfill family roles as characteristics necessary for adulthood. Differences in optimism levels were found between students and non-students. Arnett suggests that emerging adulthood would be affected by cultural influences. The unique cultural and structural influences in India such as, Hinduism, caste, gendered socialization, and the …

Feature-Based Interactive Terrain Sketching, Daniel B. Adams Nov 2009

Feature-Based Interactive Terrain Sketching, Daniel B. Adams

Theses and Dissertations

Procedural generation techniques are able to quickly and cheaply produce large areas of terrain. However, these techniques produce results that are not easily directable and often require artists to edit the results by hand to achieve the desired layout. This paper proposes a sketch-based system for controlling fractal terrain that allows for a wide variety of terrain feature types. Artists sketch features rather than constrained points or elevations. The system is interactive, provides quick on-demand previews of the terrain, and allows for iterative design modifications. Interaction between features is handled in a realistic fashion. An arbitrary vertex insertion order midpoint …

Perceptions Of School Civility: A Survey Of School Of Education Alumni, Keely Marie Swanson Nov 2009

Perceptions Of School Civility: A Survey Of School Of Education Alumni, Keely Marie Swanson

Theses and Dissertations

Very little empirical data exists on the topic of civility in schools, although much theory and philosophy are proffered in the literature. Literature on moral education and character education also informs the study of civility. Many of the philosophical theories mention education as a way of increasing civility in society. Some schools have attempted to implement various civility interventions and research supports the use of similar interventions to teach social skills; however, none have systematically collected data for these interventions to evaluate their effectiveness for teaching civility. The present research systematically gathered data on perceptions of civility and incivility in …

The Moderating Effect Of Adult Attachment Style In The Intergenerational Transmission Of Aggression In Marriage, Faith Rebekah Torres Nov 2009

The Moderating Effect Of Adult Attachment Style In The Intergenerational Transmission Of Aggression In Marriage, Faith Rebekah Torres

Theses and Dissertations

Aggression in the context of marriage and family is a common and serious issue in therapy with couples and families. While it is known that aggression may be transferred across generations, the exact mechanism for how it is transmitted is not fully understood. This study presents adult attachment style as a moderator through which the relationship between family of origin aggression and marital aggression is developed. The present study examined Relationship Evaluation (RELATE) questionnaire data for 332 individuals. Anxious and avoidant attachment were examined as potential moderators between family of origin (FOO) physical aggression or parental hostile conflict style and …

An Intermediate Extended Literacy Routine To Support Struggling Third Grade Readers, Jeani Z. Fullard Nov 2009

An Intermediate Extended Literacy Routine To Support Struggling Third Grade Readers, Jeani Z. Fullard

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Large numbers of children in the United States are not functioning at adequate levels of literacy. Students who have weak reading proficiency skills are identified as at-risk; failure to acquire competency early in their schooling adversely affects performance in all academic fields and limits their potential for achievement in life. There is an extensive knowledge base about the skills and strategies children must learn in order to read well. Effective fluency and comprehension strategies need to be taught to help students become powerful, active readers who are in control of their learning.

This study evaluated a structured classroom model …

Redesigning The Megachurch: Reintroduction Of Sacred Space Into A Highly Functional Building, Javier Valencia Nov 2009

Redesigning The Megachurch: Reintroduction Of Sacred Space Into A Highly Functional Building, Javier Valencia

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

"Megachurches offer a unique way of being religious in modern society; one that fits the social and religious context of many people says Scott Tumma “Beyond Megachurch myths”. These Massive congregations of two to fifteen thousand participants occupy an undeniable space in the religious and social landscape. It is not only their massive buildings, locations, activities or television broadcasts that make these churches important. It is the role that they play in changing society (Hartford, 2006)” Architecturally the Megachurch has failed today, it has become a “big box”, a well developed building which houses thousands of members and provides them …

Striving And Surviving: The Phenomenology Of The First-Year Teaching Experience, Michael D. Smith Nov 2009

Striving And Surviving: The Phenomenology Of The First-Year Teaching Experience, Michael D. Smith

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Despite the enduring relative popularity of teaching as a career, the research literature on teacher preparation suggests that there is growing concern about the state of the field. With each passing year, the demographic realities within k-12 classrooms bring new challenges for the teacher preparation enterprise. Shortages in high need communities and increasing numbers of provisionally certified (or uncertified) teachers represent two areas of concern. Notwithstanding the extraordinarily increasing cultural and linguistic diversity now found among the student population, the teacher population has failed to diversify in kind. The number of new teachers who are ill-prepared to respond to this …

Negotiating Face And Conflict In Romantic Relatioships: A Cross-Cultural Comparison Of Uganda And Ethiopia, Fletcher Courtney

Communication ETDs

Using Face Negotiation Theory (FNT) and its associated assumptions to guide the study, the current project addressed the lack of African centered communication research by conducting a mixed-method study in Uganda and Ethiopia regarding how culture and family socialization patterns impact romantic partners in conflict. Specifically, this study examined how culture and family communication patterns influence face concerns, conflict style choices, relationship satisfaction, and forgiveness tendencies in romantic relationships. The role of religion and communalism in African culture was also a primary focus of the study, with qualitative results yielding several interesting and new ideas about the important role of …

Adaptive Dynamic Programming-Based Optimal Control Of Unknown Affine Nonlinear Discrete-Time Systems, Travis Dierks, Balaje T. Thumati, S. Jagannathan Nov 2009

Adaptive Dynamic Programming-Based Optimal Control Of Unknown Affine Nonlinear Discrete-Time Systems, Travis Dierks, Balaje T. Thumati, S. Jagannathan

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Discrete time approximate dynamic programming (ADP) techniques have been widely used in the recent literature to determine the optimal or near optimal control policies for nonlinear systems. However, an inherent assumption of ADP requires at least partial knowledge of the system dynamics as well as the value of the controlled plant one step ahead. in this work, a novel approach to ADP is attempted while relaxing the need of the partial knowledge of the nonlinear system. the proposed methodology entails a two-part process: online system identification and offline optimal control training. First, in the identification process, a neural network (NN) …

Decentralized Control Of Large Scale Interconnected Systems Using Adaptive Neural Network-Based Dynamic Surface Control, Shahab Mehraeen, Sarangapani Jagannathan, Mariesa L. Crow Nov 2009

Decentralized Control Of Large Scale Interconnected Systems Using Adaptive Neural Network-Based Dynamic Surface Control, Shahab Mehraeen, Sarangapani Jagannathan, Mariesa L. Crow

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A novel decentralized controller using the dynamic surface control (DSC) is proposed for a class of uncertain large scale interconnected nonlinear systems in strict feedback form while relaxing the "explosion of complexity" problem which is observed in the typical backstepping approach. the matching condition is not assumed when dealing with the interconnection terms. Neural networks (NNs) are utilized to approximate the uncertainties in both subsystem and interconnected terms. by using novel NN weight update laws, it is demonstrated using Lyapunov stability that the closed-loop signals are asymptotically stable in the presence of NN approximation errors in contrast with the uniform …

An Alpha Derivative Formulation Of The Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman Equation Of Dynamic Programming, John Seiffertt Nov 2009

An Alpha Derivative Formulation Of The Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman Equation Of Dynamic Programming, John Seiffertt

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The time scales calculus, which includes the study of the alpha derivative, is an emerging key area in mathematics. We extend this calculus to Approximate Dynamic Programming. in particular, we investigate application of the alpha derivative, one of the fundamental dynamic derivatives of time scales. We present an alpha-derivative based derivation and proof of the Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman equation, the solution of which is the fundamental problem in the Held of dynamic programming. by drawing together the calculus of time scales and the applied area of stochastic control via Approximate Dynamic Programming, we connect two major fields of research. © 2009 IEEE.

Long-Term Prediction Of Time Series By Combining Direct And Mimo Strategies, Souhaib Ben Taieb, Gianluca Bontempi, Antti Sorjamaa, Amaury Lendasse Nov 2009

Long-Term Prediction Of Time Series By Combining Direct And Mimo Strategies, Souhaib Ben Taieb, Gianluca Bontempi, Antti Sorjamaa, Amaury Lendasse

Engineering Management and Systems Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Reliable and Accurate Prediction of Time Series over Large Future Horizons Has Become the New Frontier of the Forecasting Discipline. Current Approaches to Long-Term Time Series Forecasting Rely Either on Iterated Predictors, Direct Predictors Or, More Recently, on the Multi-Input Multi- Output (MIMO) Predictors. the Iterated Approach Suffers from the Accumulation of Errors, the Direct Strategy Makes a Conditional Independence Assumption, Which Does Not Necessarily Preserve the Stochastic Properties of the Time Series, While the MIMO Technique is Limited by the Reduced Flexibility of the Predictor. the Paper Compares the Direct and MIMO Strategies and Discusses their Respective Limitations to …
