Arresting Beauty, Framing Evidence: An Inquiry Into Photography And The Teaching Of Writing, Kuhio Walters
Arresting Beauty, Framing Evidence: An Inquiry Into Photography And The Teaching Of Writing, Kuhio Walters
Doctoral Dissertations
This dissertation examines the uses and conceptualizations of photography in college Composition. Composition has long been conflicted over the relation between form and content---and since the 1970s, between aesthetics and politics. Today, this disciplinary tension manifests in how the visual is brought into pedagogy: either it is approached aesthetically, as something to beautify a text, or politically, as a source of cultural critique. The field's uses of photography have been positioned within this aesthetics/politics binary, but to understand the medium as only one or the other is to miss its full practical and theoretical potential.
Theoretically, photography is powerful and …
International Law In Domestic Courts: A Conflict Of Laws Approach, Karen Knop, Ralf Michaels, Annelise Riles
International Law In Domestic Courts: A Conflict Of Laws Approach, Karen Knop, Ralf Michaels, Annelise Riles
Cornell Law Faculty Publications
The relationship between international law and domestic law is rarely understood as a conflict of laws. Understanding it in this way opens up a parallel with the field of conflict of laws: the field for which the relationship between legal systems, especially the role of another system's jurisdiction, laws, and judgments vis-à-vis the domestic legal system, are exactly the bread-and-butter issues. We argue for such an approach to international law in domestic courts: an approach that we elaborate as "theory through technique."
In our view, conflicts should be seen broadly as the discipline that developed to deal with conflicts between …
Perception Of Control And Awareness Of Deficit In Individuals With Neurological Impairment In A Clinical Sample , Donna Marie Struck
Perception Of Control And Awareness Of Deficit In Individuals With Neurological Impairment In A Clinical Sample , Donna Marie Struck
PCOM Psychology Dissertations
Acquired brain injury is considered to be one of the most important public health concerns in the United States, with approximately 1.2 million adults that meet the criteria for chronic brain disease, brain disorder, or injury each year. Medical costs directly related to injury, in addition to the indirect costs related to job loss, totaled an estimated 60 billion dollars in the year 2000. Subsequent impairment following brain injury yields a complicated neurobehavioral sequelae of deficits. Anosognosia, specifically, the deficit of the patient's inability to acknowledge, or even recognize impairments, is common following brain injury. In a review of the …

In Vitro And In Vivo Germination Of Cyclamen Alpinum Seeds, Betül Bürün, Oral Şahi̇n
In Vitro And In Vivo Germination Of Cyclamen Alpinum Seeds, Betül Bürün, Oral Şahi̇n
Turkish Journal of Botany
Cyclamen trochopteranthum O.Schwarz has a confusing history, having been identified in the last part of the 19^{th} century and described as Cyclamen alpinum Sprenger. It remained known as C. alpinum until 1975, when it was described as C. trochopteranthum by Otto Schwarz. Cyclamen trochopteranthum is a species distributed in the south-western part of Turkey, but the C. trochopteranthum described in 1975 is today describe again as Cyclamen alpinum. The seeds of this species were collected from red pine forests in the Gökbel-Dalyan area on May 3-7 and stored with and without capsules in incubators at 20 °C. Among the seeds …
Agreement Answer Scale Design For Multilingual Surveys: Effects Of Translation-Related Changes In Verbal Labels On Response Styles And Response Distributions, Ana Villar
Survey Research and Methodology Program: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Answer scales in survey instruments are widely used, but little is known about how to choose verbal descriptors as labels. In multilingual research, this matter is further complicated because answer scales must be appropriate for all languages and function comparatively. Comparing source questionnaires to translations of multinational projects (e.g., the World Values Survey, the European Social Survey), it was observed that certain verbal features differed across languages, countries, and modules. This dissertation empirically investigates the effect of such changes on response distributions. The verbal feature examined is the presence or absence of an intensity modifier in the second and fourth …
Grace In Paul's Letter To Titus In Light Of Greco-Roman Patronage, Jeffrey R. Syverson
Grace In Paul's Letter To Titus In Light Of Greco-Roman Patronage, Jeffrey R. Syverson
Doctor of Ministry
This thesis argues that patronage is a crucial and not yet sufficiently utilized interpretive lens to understanding xcxpK (grace) in Paul's letter to Titus. It introduces patronage in the Greco-Roman world and surveys definitions and characteristics. It offers descriptions of the roles of clients and patrons. It discusses different forms of patronage: personal patronage, friendship, public benefaction, literary patronage, divine patronage, political patronage and brokerage. It also considers the relationship of patronage and benefaction. A major focus is a consideration of the usage of grace (xapic.:) in patronage looking to inscriptions, letters, and literature from the era. The influence on …
Kinds Of Faulknerians, Peter Lurie
Kinds Of Faulknerians, Peter Lurie
English Faculty Publications
There are, it seems, two kinds of Faulknerians. Or there used to be. Although not contending critical camps per se, these two approaches to the long career of this modernist from the American south nevertheless partake of very different ways of considering the canonical writer. In the process, they seek to maintain Faulkner’s continuing relevance in ways that say much about his contribution to a uniquely American and regional modernism as well as a body of work marked, particularly in his later novels, by post-Second World War—if not also postmodern—practices and concerns.

Faculty Bibliography 2000s
The current study, examines whether the fear of being laughed at (gelotophobia) can be assessed reliably and validly by means of a self-report instrument in different countries of the world. All items of the GELOPH (Ruch and Titze 1998; Ruch and Proyer 2008b) were translated to the local language of the collaborator (42 languages in total). In total, 22,610 participants in 93 samples from 73 countries completed the GELOPH. Across all samples the reliability of the 15-item questionnaire was high (mean alpha of. 85) and in all samples the scales appeared to be unidimensional The endorsement rates for the items …
Examining The General Quality Of Early Childhood Education And Structural Variables In Support Of Early Childhood Inclusion In Beijing, China, Bi Ying Hu
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The primary purpose of this study was to (a) explore the global quality of early childhood programs within the Chinese socio-cultural context, and (b) examine the effects of teachers' years of experience, degree, major, and class size on teachers' perceptions of developmentally appropriate practices, inclusion, and training needs in order to provide services for children with disabilities in regular classrooms. The researcher completed observations in 40 early childhood classrooms using the Early Childhood Environment Rating Scale- Revised (ECERS-R). Results from classroom observations revealed that the global quality of the early childhood learning environment was between minimum and good. Areas that …

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture
[First paragraph]
Central to ethnographic construction and production of knowledge(s) is the fieldwork experience and the location of the knower. Anthropological fieldwork conventionally privileged knowing the Other and the going elsewhere. As a spatial practice, fieldwork refers to "a specific style, quality, and duration of dwelling"; that is distinguished from travel (Clifford 1997: 22). Territoriality of the field and prolonged immersion in the locality defined this fieldworker conducting fieldwork in the field (Gupta and Ferguson 1997). The growing acceptance and recognition of mobility among communities and the interface of the local and the global in everyday life of an individual …

Technology And Women's Lives: Queering Media Ethnography, Irmi Karl
Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture
This article offers a re-examination and re-articulation of ethnographic approaches towards the study of media audiences and the consumption and use of information and communication technologies (ICTs). In particular, it aims to highlight the challenges faced by researchers undertaking fieldwork in so-called familiar cultural settings. Based on insights gained from a longitudinal study into the ICT consumption practices of female-headed households in Brighton, UK, it seeks to re-vitalize the ethnographic imagination by asking: how can we, in an age of mobile media cultures, consolidate on- and offline encounters and overcome anxieties around boundary crossings expressed through the prevailing heteronormative frameworks …

Object Knowledge: Researching Objects In The Museum Experience, Elizabeth Wood, Kiersten F. Latham
Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture
This paper investigates an interdisciplinary perspective on museum research, offering a new orientation and methodology for fieldwork. It begins from the stance of "object knowledge", which describes the ways of knowing that come from human interaction with and study of physical objects. Next, is the documentation of the power of objects to define the lived experience of time, place, and identity, presented with an applied and theoretical perspective on tangible objects and their relationship to lived experience. Through object knowledge we argue that museums can better understand their impact and influence on visitors and define the ways that objects and …

Complicated Conversations Between Interviewing And Psychoanalytic Theory, Rachel Hurst
Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture
[First paragraph]
The lyrebird is an endangered Australian creature, almost a strange peacock with a steely grey body and tail feathers flanked on either side with an ostentatious whorl. What makes this bird unique is that in order to attract a mate, the lyrebird sings a song that consists of every notable birdsong, forest noise, or human-generated sound the bird has ever heard, sung in a sequence composed by the bird. The lyrebird faithfully mimics these noises in timbre and resonance, and repeats them exactly as they were originally heard: the impersonation is so good that it fools practically all …

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
Researchers have worked for years to decrease rates of student dropout by identifying associated factors, and developing strategies to increase school success. Despite these efforts, dropout is a complicated phenomenon, making it difficult to effectively support students. There is a body of literature concerning the connection between students' sense of belonging and its relationship to dropout. This literature is reviewed in light of the effect teachers, parents, peers, and personal characteristics have on belonging and dropout. A second body of research concerning how the physical environment of schools as behavior settings affects student outcomes is also discussed. A survey was …

Elisabeth Haub School of Law Faculty Publications
Entire texts have been devoted to exploring the meaning of the term “lifestyle” and sociological understandings of lifestyle are complex and nuanced. For present purposes, however, a more simple articulation of the term will suffice. Lifestyle can mean “mode of living,” including “patterns of action” and “patterns of ways of living.” Without rendering judgment, one observation that can fairly be made about the current lifestyles and associated behaviors of Americans is that they indirectly and directly lead to the emission of a high volume of greenhouse gases (“GHGs”).7 Although an American diplomat is said to have remarked in preparing for …

How does one adapt him/herself to an environment that is so different in almost every way? Noticing exactly how one is forming their gestures and body movements so as not to offend anyone, modifying one’s point-of-view on issues that seem so straightforward like cutting in line, and realizing that even facial expressions are partially culturally determined are among countless other topics within the situations that sojourners voluntarily place themselves for months at a time. How do they adapt to these strange new situations? What are some of the difficulties in adapting? What aspects of their home culture do they maintain? …

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture
[First paragraph]
In their edited volume, Johannesburg: The Elusive Metropolis, Sarah Nuttall and Achille Mbembe, offer their readers a glimpse of contemporary Johannesburg from multiple vantage points, combining to create a singleness of vision that reveals a fractured and layered modern metropolis. However, the cohesiveness that binds this book should not be mistaken for theoretical fixity of the African metropolis. Recognizing that city forms "outpace the capacity of analysts to name them" (25), the editors of Johannesburg seek to unfix rather than fix the meanings of African modernity. As promised in the title, Johannesburg is depicted as elusive, uncontainable and …
