Culturally Identifying The Performance Practices Of Astor Piazzolla's Second Quinteto, Kacey Quin Link Jan 2009

Culturally Identifying The Performance Practices Of Astor Piazzolla's Second Quinteto, Kacey Quin Link

Open Access Theses

Astor Piazzolla (1921-1992) captivated Argentine and international audiences with his innovative works in a nuevo tango style and his bandoneón performances. Piazzolla?s success culminated during the 1980s with his second Quinteto, which performed remarkable concerts in venues such as the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires and the Central Park Bandshell in New York, in addition to the performances at the Montreal and Montreux Jazz Festivals. His music also grew popular with a plethora of internationally acclaimed classical and jazz artists as well as with Argentine musicians themselves. However, Piazzolla?s music poses a challenge today, because nuevo tango represents a synthesis …

"An Enduring Cycle": Revaluing The Life And Music Of Johanna Beyer, Kelly Hiser Jan 2009

"An Enduring Cycle": Revaluing The Life And Music Of Johanna Beyer, Kelly Hiser

Open Access Theses

This thesis presents an integrated assessment of the life and music of Johanna Beyer (1888-1944) through a combination of socio-cultural and musical analysis. It examines the composer?s biography in the context of the New York music scene in which she participated and the social and cultural paradigms of her time. Contemporary conceptions of gender and sex had a particularly strong impact on Beyer?s work and the reception of her music. Ideologies concerning gender, sex, work, composition and modernism intersected in a variety of ways in her life and music; these issues are examined extensively in Chapter Two. Because gendered thought …

Role Of Phytoplankton In Mercury Cycling In The San Francisco Bay Estuary, Allison C. Luengen, A. Russell Flegal Jan 2009

Role Of Phytoplankton In Mercury Cycling In The San Francisco Bay Estuary, Allison C. Luengen, A. Russell Flegal

Environmental Science

To study the role of phytoplankton in mercury cycling, we measured methylmercury (MeHg) and total mercury (HgT) in surface waters during the spring 2003 phytoplankton bloom in San Francisco Bay. Conditions that described the peak of the bloom, the amount of sorbent, and decay of the bloom were summarized by principal component analysis (PCA). Multivariate analyses conducted with the PCA factors demonstrated that the bloom accounted for a significant (p = 0.03) decrease in dissolved (-1 and was unaffected when chlorophyll a concentrations nearly tripled, indicating that bloom dilution could occur as a result of a limited …

Preparation And Characterization Of Protein-Nanotube Conjugates, Jonathan S. Dordick, Dhiral A. Shah, Ravindra C. Pangule, Shyam Sundhar Bale, Prashanth Asuri, Amit Joshi, Akhilesh Banerjee, David Vance, Ravi S. Kane Jan 2009

Preparation And Characterization Of Protein-Nanotube Conjugates, Jonathan S. Dordick, Dhiral A. Shah, Ravindra C. Pangule, Shyam Sundhar Bale, Prashanth Asuri, Amit Joshi, Akhilesh Banerjee, David Vance, Ravi S. Kane

Bioengineering

This chapter describes methods of immobilizing proteins on carbon nanotubes, using two different routes—physical adsorption and covalent attachment. We also provide an overview on how such conjugates can be characterized with the help of various techniques, such as Raman, Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), circular dichroism (CD), and fluorescence spectroscopies, in addition to the standard enzyme kinetic analyses of activity and stability. Both the attachment routes—covalent and noncovalent—could be used to prepare protein conjugates that retained a significant fraction of their native structure and function; furthermore, the protein conjugates were operationally stable, reusable, and functional even under harsh denaturing conditions. These …

Outsider Citizens: Film Narratives About The Internment Of Japanese Americans, Taunya Lovell Banks Jan 2009

Outsider Citizens: Film Narratives About The Internment Of Japanese Americans, Taunya Lovell Banks

Faculty Scholarship

This article examines the conflicting film narratives about the internment from 1942 through 2007. It argues that while later film narratives, especially documentaries, counter early government film narratives justifying the internment, these counter-narratives have their own damaging hegemony. Whereas earlier commercial films tell the internment story through the eyes of sympathetic whites, using a conventional civil rights template … Japanese and other Asian American documentary filmmakers construct their Japanese characters as model minorities — hyper-citizens, super patriots. Further, the internment experience remains largely a male story. With the exception of Emiko Omori’s documentary film memoir, Rabbit in the Moon (2004), …

Microtonality As An Expressive Device: An
Approach
 For
The
Contemporary
Saxophonist, Seán Mac Erlaine

Dissertations

This dissertation provides a critical examination of the use of microtonality as an expressive tool for the improvising saxophonist and offers a new method for quarter-tone production drawing on cultural references from European art music, Arabic Maqam and Contemporary Jazz. The thesis is underpinned by an historical, musicological analysis of tuning systems and theory necessary for the performer of microtonal music. The dissertation is presented in three chapters. In Chapter One, a discussion of tuning theory and a history of temperament systems contextualises the current uses of equal temperament and extensions of it including the quarter-tone tempered system. Chapter Two …

Hollywood Representations Of Irish Journalism: A Case Study Of Veronica Guerin, Pat Brereton Jan 2009

Hollywood Representations Of Irish Journalism: A Case Study Of Veronica Guerin, Pat Brereton

Articles

This paper emanates from an interest in how the journalist profession is represented on film. This discussion is framed, broadly, by an effort to gauge the performative nature of journalists, from ‘hard-boiled’ press hacks to egomaniacal TV reporters, while situating the vocation within conventional media studies, which privileges political and ethical indicators like ‘the Fourth Estate’ or as ‘Public Watchdog’.

“Reporters Gone Wild” Reporters And Their Critics On Hurricane Katrina, Gender, Race & Place, Steven Classen Jan 2009

“Reporters Gone Wild” Reporters And Their Critics On Hurricane Katrina, Gender, Race & Place, Steven Classen

Faculty Publications - Department of Communication and Cinematic Arts

The great fiction of the southern United States is frequently characterized by its passionate embrace of place. In her classic essay, “Place in Fiction,” the widely beloved Mississippi author Eudora Welty writes, “Place in history partakes of feeling, as feeling about history partakes of place. Feelings are bound up in place. Location is the ground conductor of all the currents of emotion and belief and moral conviction that charge out from the story in its course.”

Welty's rich stories evoke larger traditions of southern art and everyday culture imbued with multifaceted understandings of place. Starting with Welty's insight, in this …

Invisibility And In/Di/Visuality: The Relevance Of Art Education In Curriculum Theorizing, James Haywood Rolling Jan 2009

Invisibility And In/Di/Visuality: The Relevance Of Art Education In Curriculum Theorizing, James Haywood Rolling

Teaching and Leadership - All Scholarship

This article investigates how representation attaches meaning to bodies, how certain bodies are categorically misrepresented and masked from normativity, and proposes a curriculum theory affording the agency of the misrepresented to demask invisibility. Brief historical narratives of three kinds of invisibility are presented as they are manifested in educational practice and visual culture—masking those deemed to occupy lesser physical bodies, lesser bodies of knowledge, and bodies lesser-than-normal. The author argues the relevance of art education as a transformative pedagogical practice that can inform and promote social significance, or what the author terms as in/di/visuality, the agency to reinterpret misrepresented physical …

His Final Homily: Pope John Paul Ii's Death As An Affirmation Of His Life's Message, Joesph M. Valenzano Jan 2009

His Final Homily: Pope John Paul Ii's Death As An Affirmation Of His Life's Message, Joesph M. Valenzano

Communication Faculty Publications

Every Sunday morning, a member of the Roman Catholic clergy addresses his flock after a reading from one of the Gospels. These homilies ordinarily last between 10 and 20 minutes and allow the priest an opportunity to interpret the Gospel message from that day's reading, as well as discuss how that message relates to contemporary events and issues.

During the final two months of his life, Pope John Paul II provided a longer, more powerful symbolic homily to the world. The message summarized his positions on freedom, suffering, and the dignity of human life.
