The Relationship Of Drawing, Writing, Literacy And Math In Kindergarten Children, Susan Steffani, Paula M. Selvester Feb 2009

The Relationship Of Drawing, Writing, Literacy And Math In Kindergarten Children, Susan Steffani, Paula M. Selvester

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

This study supports and extends previous research that suggests there is a relationship between picture naming and a variety of other factors that impact early literacy. The study explores the picture naming/representing ability of kindergarteners (n = 20), their ability to name and draw pictures of objects they could and could not immediately identify, and their early literacy and math assessments. Significant results were found for 1) drawing ratings and alphabet writing, and 2) alphabet writing, geometric shape sorting, and rhyming. Relationships between kindergarteners’ picturing naming and drawing and their early literacy assessment performance are explored.

From Newspaper Row To Times Square: The Dispersal And Contested Identity Of An Imagined Journalistic Community, Dale L. Cressman Phd

Faculty Publications

Until the early twentieth century, Park Row was synonymous with New York newspapers. Of the newspapers that left Park Row, The New York Times was notable for having established a geographic landmark that was identified with the newspaper. In fact, by 1906, Times Square had replaced Park Row as a place for New Yorkers to get election night news or to celebrate New Year's Eve. Nevertheless, Times Square did not remain associated with its newspaper namesake, and today a successor to the "zipper" is the last physical reminder of the paper's presence in this area of New York City. Italy: The Case For Division, Sara Jane Micali Feb 2009

Italy: The Case For Division, Sara Jane Micali

Pell Scholars and Senior Theses

This work is a comparative thesis between northern and southern Italy, particularly on the socio-economic and geo-political differences that divide the country. Differences in areas such as historical background, geography, economy, tourism, social trends, and politics have separated the country into two distinctly dissimilar parts, the north and the south. With evidence of the industrial north in comparison to the agricultural south, as well as the introduction of “third Italy”, the economic differences between the country are clear. Similarly, the traditions of the south keep them far behind the modern north and the influence of both the Lega Nord and …

Building Partner Capacity/Security Force Assistance: A New Structural Paradigm, Scott G. Wuestner Colonel

Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies

The Civil Response Corps (CRC) would function much like our military reserve. It would ease the burden on the Armed Forces by allowing the hiring of civilians with critical skills to serve on missions abroad when America needs them. The CRC is a product of the efforts of State Department’s Coordinator for Reconstruction and Stabilization (S/CRS). The core mission of S/CRS is to lead, coordinate, and institutionalize U.S. Government civilian capacity to prevent or prepare for post-conflict situations, and to help stabilize and reconstruct societies in transition from conflict or civil strife, so they can reach a sustainable path toward …

A Study Of Compliment Responses Among Male And Female Egyptian Undergraduate Students, Mariam Mostafa Feb 2009

A Study Of Compliment Responses Among Male And Female Egyptian Undergraduate Students, Mariam Mostafa

Theses and Dissertations

The present study aims to detect the variations in the compliment responses (CRs) between male and female Egyptian undergraduates, adding new dimensions to the study of CRs in the Egyptian context generally and among males and females specifically. The outcomes of the study will provide implications about the linguistic forms of compliment responses across males and females at the undergraduate level and also about the social decorum and value systems of Egyptian teenagers represented by university students. A similar study was piloted in the spring semester of 2013, with a small convenient sample (28 students from a private University in …

Identification Of A Potent Herbal Molecule For The Treatment Of Breast Cancer, Srinivas Koduru, Srinivasan Sowmyalakshmi, Raj Kumar, Rohini Gomathinayagam, Jürgen Rohr, Chendil Damodaran

Pharmaceutical Sciences Faculty Publications

BACKGROUND: Breast cancer (BCa)-related mortality still remains the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths worldwide. Patients with BCa have increasingly shown resistance and high toxicity to current chemotherapeutic drugs for which identification of novel targeted therapies are required.

METHODS: To determine the effect of PDBD on BCa cells, estrogen-receptor positive (ER+)-MCF-7 and estrogen-receptor negative (ER-)-MDA 231 cells were treated with PDBD and the cell viability, apoptotic, cell cycle, Western blot and Promoter assays were performed.

RESULTS: PDBD inhibits cell viability of ER+ and ER- BCa cells by inducing apoptosis without causing significant toxicity in normal breast epithelial cells. While dissecting …

Japanese International Graduate Students In U.S. Higher Education Classrooms: An Investigation Of Their Pedagogical And Epistemological Challenges And Supports, Miki Yamashita Jan 2009

Japanese International Graduate Students In U.S. Higher Education Classrooms: An Investigation Of Their Pedagogical And Epistemological Challenges And Supports, Miki Yamashita

Dissertations and Theses

International students have long been an important part of the U.S. higher education community, but generally they have received inadequate attention in the classroom. Also, American teaching and learning strategies have not taken full advantage of international diversity. The purpose of this narrative study was to qualitatively understand the experiences of Japanese graduate students in U.S. higher education classrooms. The study highlights the challenges that Japanese graduate students faced due to cultural differences, pedagogical differences, and language problems and provides a number of suggestions for faculty, domestic students, and institutions to help create a more welcoming environment for Japanese graduate …

Responding To The Plague Years: Aids Theatre In The 1980s, Jason Campbell Jan 2009

Responding To The Plague Years: Aids Theatre In The 1980s, Jason Campbell

Theses and Dissertations

Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) was first discovered in 1981 and consequently changed United States history. Initially, it affected the gay community, and the United States Government did not actively combat the spread of the disease for the first four years of the epidemic. In response to a need for education, the theatre community took it upon itself to raise awareness about the disease. Artists such as Robert Chesley and Larry Kramer created pieces of theatre that helped society deal with AIDS. This thesis explores the AIDS theatre canon while focusing on two major works: Robert Chesley’s Night Sweat: A …

The use of race in biomedical research has, for decades, been a source of social controversy. However, recent events, such as the adoption of racially targeted pharmaceuticals, have raised the profile of the race issue. In addition, we are entering an era in which genomic research is increasingly focused on the nature and extent of human genetic variation, often examined by population, which leads to heightened potential for misunderstandings or misuse of terms concerning genetic variation and race. Here, we draw together the perspectives of participants in a recent interdisciplinary workshop on ancestry and health in medicine in order to …

Swift: Peculiar Supporter Of Female Writers, Robert N. Gamache Jan 2009

Swift: Peculiar Supporter Of Female Writers, Robert N. Gamache

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Jonathan Swift (1667-1745) is not traditionally known for valuing the company of women. While contemporary critics tend to be more forgiving and defer to the prevailing values of the eighteenth century, they generally do not dwell on the positive influence that Swift had on female writers of his day. This thesis will work towards remedying that omission by analyzing the writing of three prominent female contemporaries of Swift: Delariviere Manley, Mary Barber and Laetitia Pilkington. While varying in writing ability, each of the three women in this thesis had a personal relationship with Swift, was invited to join his "inner …
