La Femme «Exotique» Dans Des Textes Choisis Français Et Francophones Du Xix. E Et Xx. E Siècles, Katerina Daly

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

The representation of literary characters in a novel often addresses socio‐ cultural issues. The authors give depth to their literary characters by closely illuminating details of the novel’s setting, of the flora and the fauna, the social structure, the economic organization, aspects of the traditional culture, history and language. This study reviews several novels written by Francophone authors and examines the ways these novels treat socio‐cultural themes. The focus of this work is on exoticism , which can be defined as all “which is foreign to the climate, to the habits and to the culture of the world region in …

Learning And Teaching Chinese Language And Culture In Dublin: Attitudes And Expectations, Yiling Liu Aug 2009

Learning And Teaching Chinese Language And Culture In Dublin: Attitudes And Expectations, Yiling Liu

Masters

In response to a world-wide tide of Chinese language learning, educational institutions in Ireland have begun, in the last five years, to put in place degree courses and an increasing number of classes for the teaching of Chinese. It is helpful to understand the attitudes and expectations of students and teachers concerning the learning and teaching of Chinese language and culture in an Irish teaching environment. Language is part of a particular culture. The learning and acquisition of a target culture are as important as learning the language per se. In a non-target language environment, the learning and teaching of …

Hong Kong's Cultural Identity Reflected In Jackie Chan's Films., Yajuan Ding 1969-

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In the 1990s, especially the years before and after Hong Kong's return to the People's Republic of China in 1997, some celebrated and talented Hong Kong film stars, such as Jackie Chan, Yun-Fat Chow and Michelle Yeoh, sought their career success in the Western world, especially in Hollywood. By studying Jackie Chan's representative films produced in Hong Kong and in Hollywood before and after 1997, the author explores how Hong Kong's cultural identity is portrayed in his films produced in the Western world and in a city with a legacy of over a century of colonization. Moreover, the author also …

Consumer Typology And Online Travel Websites, Hong Youl Ha, Felix Mavondo, Siva Muthaly

Asia Marketing Journal

This research attempts to investigate differences in past experiences of using internet in repurchasing. In doing so, the authors identify online consumer characteristics, particularly one-time and repeat users comparison across geographical borders of Korean and Taiwanese teenage customers. Results show that there are significant differences in online shopping typologies between Korean and Taiwanese customers. While attitude serves as a distinguishing factor for both data sets along the other two dimensions, trust does not. Since researchers have focused on comparisons between Western cultures and Asian cultures` online purchase behavior or Internet use, the current study provides a valuable comparison for this …

Subchronic Infusion Of The Product Of Inflammation Prostaglandin J2 Models Sporadic Parkinson's Disease In Mice, Sha-Ron Pierre, Marijke Am Lemmens, Maria E. Figueiredo-Pereira Jul 2009

Subchronic Infusion Of The Product Of Inflammation Prostaglandin J2 Models Sporadic Parkinson's Disease In Mice, Sha-Ron Pierre, Marijke Am Lemmens, Maria E. Figueiredo-Pereira

Publications and Research

Background Chronic neuroinflammation is implicated in Parkinson's disease (PD). Inflammation involves the activation of microglia and astrocytes that release high levels of prostaglandins. There is a profound gap in our understanding of how cyclooxygenases and their prostaglandin products redirect cellular events to promote PD neurodegeneration. The major prostaglandin in the mammalian brain is prostaglandin D2, which readily undergoes spontaneous dehydration to generate the bioactive cyclopentenone prostaglandins of the J2 series. These J2 prostaglandins are highly reactive and neurotoxic products of inflammation shown in cellular models to impair the ubiquitin/proteasome pathway and cause the accumulation of ubiquitinated proteins. PD is a …

Throughout the history of the HIV epidemic, HIV-positive patients with relatively high CD4 counts and no clinical features of opportunistic infections have been classified as ‘‘asymptomatic’’ by definition and treatment guidelines. This classification, however, does not take into consideration the array of symptoms that an HIV-positive person can experience long before progressing to AIDS. This short report describes two international multi-site studies conducted in 2003 - 2005 and 2005 - 2007. The results from the studies show that HIV-positive people may experience symptoms throughout the trajectory of their disease, regardless of CD4 count or classification. Providers should discuss symptoms and …

Adaptation At A Shortened Length In Rabbit Femoral Artery, Melissa Bednarek Jul 2009

Adaptation At A Shortened Length In Rabbit Femoral Artery, Melissa Bednarek

Theses and Dissertations

It is well known that the overlap between the thick and thin filaments in striated muscle is responsible for the single active length-tension (L-T) curve. With the lack of visible striations, a sarcomeric unit has not been identified in smooth muscle. Though once thought to function like striated muscle via a sliding filament mechanism of contraction, recent studies on length-adaptation (L-adaptation) in airway smooth muscle (ASM), in which increased tension is generated with repeated contraction, have led to the hypothesis of a dynamic L-T curve in smooth muscle. Although more established in ASM, two studies have shown L-adaptation in vascular …

Acculturation, Enculturation, And Symptoms Of Schizophrenia In Ethnic Minority Patients: An Examination Of Sociocultural Mediators Underlying These Relationships, Vamsi K. Koneru Jul 2009

Acculturation, Enculturation, And Symptoms Of Schizophrenia In Ethnic Minority Patients: An Examination Of Sociocultural Mediators Underlying These Relationships, Vamsi K. Koneru

Open Access Dissertations

The preponderance of evidence from large-scale studies shows a detrimental association between greater acculturation (to mainstream U.S. values and beliefs) and mental health. Prior research also suggests that greater acculturation may be associated with a breakdown of adaptive behaviors and values (e.g., religiosity/spirituality) thereby negatively impacting mental health. In addition, literature generally suggests that enculturation (retention of culture of origin customs and values) is associated with better mental health. However, few studies have examined potential mediators between acculturation/enculturation and mental health; and research on this topic with patients with schizophrenia is particularly scarce. Using a sample of 44 Hispanic and …

Teaching Another Literacy Across The Curriculum, Jeana T. Rock

Theses and Dissertations

Advances in communication technology have allowed for new ways for high school teachers to incorporate these technologies into their classroom practice. However, most teachers are uninformed about media literacy pedagogy. This study investigated how using a collaborative professional development group influenced teachers' understanding and use of media literacy concepts in their current practice. A professional development group with teachers from different content areas met for five months to study the theory and methodology of media literacy. This collaborative group provided opportunities for teachers to develop and share analytical and productions skills in media literacy, as well as design lessons utilizing …

Establishing Creative Writing Studies As An Academic Discipline, Dianne J. Donnelly Jul 2009

Establishing Creative Writing Studies As An Academic Discipline, Dianne J. Donnelly

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The discipline of creative writing is charged "as the most untheorized, and in that respect, anachronistic area in the entire constellation of English studies (Haake What Our Speech Disrupts 49). We need only look at its historical precedents to understand these intimations. It is a discipline which is unaware of the histories that informs its practice. It relies on the tradition of the workshop model as its signature pedagogy, and it is part of a fractured community signaled by its long history of subordination to literary studies, its lack of status and sustaining lore, and its own resistance to reform. …

Altman…Now, More Than Ever: Social Conflict In The Films Of Robert Altman, Walker Hicken Jul 2009

Altman…Now, More Than Ever: Social Conflict In The Films Of Robert Altman, Walker Hicken

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

There is much scholarship to suggest that the idea of America is an idea of a meritocracy. Generally, the ideal construction of American meritocracy involves people working hard and being able to accomplish whatever they set their minds to. Filmmaker Robert Altman constructs a very different America. In Altman's eyes, success is achieved through promotion, either self-promotion or promotion by others. An individual's status, whether it be within a peer group or on a national level, is far more important that the actual work that that person has done. This thesis will also examine how Altman presents this promotion as …

Hans-Ulrich Treichel's Der Verlorene: Trans-Generational Trauma, Guilt And Shame, Anja Jennifer Riley Jul 2009

Hans-Ulrich Treichel's Der Verlorene: Trans-Generational Trauma, Guilt And Shame, Anja Jennifer Riley

Foreign Languages & Literatures ETDs

The public and private discourse about Germany's past under Hitler has recently undergone a significant shift. Instead of focusing on Germans as perpetrators, the last two decades have been dominated by discussions about Germans as innocent civilians victimized by the victorious Allies during the last years of WWII. Against the backdrop of this shift in German memory politics, this thesis examines literary negotiations of the current 'victim debate', using Hans-Ulrich Treichel's prose text Der Verlorene (1998) as a primary example. Der Verlorene dramatizes a childhood dominated by an irrevocable loss. The parents of the child narrator have been traumatized by …

Nanofiber Scaffolds With Gradations In Mineral Content For Mimicking The Tendon-To-Bone Insertion Site, Xiaoran Li, Jingwei Xie, Justin Lipner, Xiaoyan Yuan, Stavros Thomopoulos, Younan Xia

MIIR Faculty Research

We have demonstrated a simple and versatile method for generating a continuously graded, bonelike calcium phosphate coating on a nonwoven mat of electrospun nanofibers. A linear gradient in calcium phosphate content could be achieved across the surface of the nanofiber mat. The gradient had functional consequences with regard to stiffness and biological activity. Specifically, the gradient in mineral content resulted in a gradient in the stiffness of the scaffold and further influenced the activity of mouse preosteoblast MC3T3 cells. This new class of nanofiberbased scaffolds can potentially be employed for repairing the tendon-to-bone insertion site via a tissue engineering approach.
