Community-Engaged Scholarship In Higher Education: An Expanding Experience, Judith A. Ramaley

Public Administration Faculty Publications and Presentations

Higher education in this country has always been expected to serve the public good. Sometimes, the emphasis is on preparing educated citizens or practitioners in especially critical fields and how public service can deepen and enrich learning and prepare students to lead purposeful, responsible, and creative lives. Sometimes the focus is upon institutions themselves as major intellectual and cultural resources for a community. In this paper, based on the keynote presentation at the Community -- Engaged Scholarship for Health Collaborative's invitational symposium, the author explores four levels of engagement: the individual, the academic community and its concepts of scholarship, the …

Evalutaion Of Embedded Malingering Indices In A Non-Litigating, Relief Seeking Sample: A Partial Cross-Validation Using Control, Clinical, And Derived Groups, Russell D. Pella Jan 2009

Evalutaion Of Embedded Malingering Indices In A Non-Litigating, Relief Seeking Sample: A Partial Cross-Validation Using Control, Clinical, And Derived Groups, Russell D. Pella

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Researchers have recently noted college students fail validity measures and base rate data are needed for students meeting Slick et al.’s criteria (1999) for malingering. The association between meeting Slick Criteria and subsequent recommendations (i.e., to receive external gain) is unknown as is the diagnostic utility of embedded validity indices in this population. The authors utilized archival data from: 1) a university psychological clinic (n = 986) and 2) a university student control sample (n = 182). Measures included the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale-III, Wechsler Memory Scale-III, and Personality Assessment Inventory. Empirically supported embedded validity indices were utilized to retrospectively …

The Coffee House Classroom: The Difference Between Student And Faculty Perceptions Of Classroom Spatial Design In A Community College Environment, Katherine Kent Jan 2009

The Coffee House Classroom: The Difference Between Student And Faculty Perceptions Of Classroom Spatial Design In A Community College Environment, Katherine Kent

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

With the ever increasing need for employees who are capable of problem solving, working in team-based projects, and engaging in professional discourse, it is questionable whether these activities are, or can be, supported and promoted in the typical community college classroom environment containing traditional rows of desks and computers with a professor front and center. These traditional classroom arrangements discourage participatory activities and engagements with peers and faculty due to the very nature of the inflexible and impersonal alignment of side-by-side, row seating. This study investigated the impact of the physical furnishings and the spatial arrangement of a classroom environment …

Lobbying And Litigating Against "Legal Bootleggers"- The Role Of The Organized Bar In The Expansion Of The Courts' Inherent Powers In The Early Twentieth Century, Laurel A. Rigertas Jan 2009

Lobbying And Litigating Against "Legal Bootleggers"- The Role Of The Organized Bar In The Expansion Of The Courts' Inherent Powers In The Early Twentieth Century, Laurel A. Rigertas

Faculty Articles, Papers, and Other Scholarship

This article suggests that the state judicial branches in the 1930’s and 1940’s may have overreached by holding that state legislatures did not have the constitutional power to define the practice of law. These holdings arose from the efforts of the organized bar, which may have been more motivated by fears of competing lobbying groups than by legitimate constitutional constraints on the legislatures' power. This development put the legal profession on a trajectory that may not ultimately be in the best interest of consumers of legal services. Part I is a brief overview of the early development of the separation …

A Novel Synthesis And Characterization Of Fluorescein Isothiocyanate Labeled Poly(Styrenesulfonate Sodium Salt), Xiaowei Tong Jan 2009

A Novel Synthesis And Characterization Of Fluorescein Isothiocyanate Labeled Poly(Styrenesulfonate Sodium Salt), Xiaowei Tong

LSU Master's Theses

The diffusion of polyelectrolytes in low-salt or salt-free aqueous solutions is a controversial question. It has been intensively discussed since it was discovered in 1978. Most previous experimental data were obtained from dynamic light scattering (DLS), whose precision, however, was reduced by stringent sample preparation and weak scattering of polyelectrolyte in low-salt solution. For the most commonly studied polyelectrolyte, poly(styrenesulfonate sodium salt) (NaPSS), the harsh polymerization condition and the manufacturing procedure lead to hydrophobic defects and aggregations, which also block a correct insight about the diffusion of polyelectrolyte. In contrast to DLS, fluorescence photobleaching recovery (FPR) directly looks on the …

Effects Of Three Early Literacy Interventions In The Preschool Classroom: Comparing Phonological Awareness Training, Dialogic Reading, And A Combination Condition In Small Groups, Jennifer Koenig Longwell Jan 2009

Effects Of Three Early Literacy Interventions In The Preschool Classroom: Comparing Phonological Awareness Training, Dialogic Reading, And A Combination Condition In Small Groups, Jennifer Koenig Longwell

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Phonological awareness, oral language, alphabet knowledge, and print awareness are the building blocks for emergent literacy. These skills can be divided into embedded and explicit domains of early literacy interventions. Dialogic reading, a well-researched embedded method of reading intervention, incorporates oral language and print awareness through adult-child storybook reading. Phonological awareness interventions utilize explicit skills such as phonemic instruction and letter knowledge to increase early literacy. The current study examined three early literacy interventions, dialogic reading, phonological awareness, and a combination condition, in comparison with each other and a control condition. Thirty-seven preschool children were randomly assigned to a condition …

Wendell Berry And The Politics Of Homecoming: Place, Memory And Time In Jayber Crow, Drew Kennedy Thompson Jan 2009

Wendell Berry And The Politics Of Homecoming: Place, Memory And Time In Jayber Crow, Drew Kennedy Thompson

LSU Master's Theses

This study examines the “politics of homecoming” appearing in author Wendell Berry’s novel Jayber Crow. The novel portrays the community of a small rural town, as narrated through the autobiography of its bachelor barber. The life-story of Jayber Crow is a journey of homecoming, progressing through three stages of nativity, estrangement, and restoration. These phases correspond and interact with philosophical motifs that can be traced throughout Berry’s corpus, but reaching their fullest expression in Jayber Crow. “Place” is the first motif, and facilitates a discussion of Berry’s contemporary agrarian vision of community. “Memory,” the second motif, becomes effective during the …

Exploration Of Ternary Intermetallic Materials Using Tin And Gallium Flux, Edem Kodzo Okudzeto Jan 2009

Exploration Of Ternary Intermetallic Materials Using Tin And Gallium Flux, Edem Kodzo Okudzeto

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The focus of this dissertation is the structure-property relationships of ternary intermetallic stannides and gallides. We are interested in these compounds because of the wide range of physical properties they possess. While investigating the Ln-Co-Sn system (Ln = lanthanide), we have synthesized single crystals that crystallize in the Yb3Rh4Sn13, Ho7Co6Sn23 and the Tb5Rh6Sn18 structure types. We observe the formation of a particular structure type depending on the size of the lanthanide present. The aforementioned compounds all contain CoSn6 trigonal prisms, which create voids occupied by Ln and Sn polyhedral units. We have also investigated the physical properties of these compounds …

The Problems Solving Styles Of Emergency Operations Center Staffs Of Local And State Government Agencies, Glynn Cavin Jan 2009

The Problems Solving Styles Of Emergency Operations Center Staffs Of Local And State Government Agencies, Glynn Cavin

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to investigate the demographics, leadership styles, and preferred problem solving style of the emergency management career field. The catalyst for the research was recognition that there are few scholarly investigations or theories of the cognitive processes that occur within emergency operations center staffs (EOCs), and to establish the demographic baseline. Demographics of Louisiana participants were compared with similar demographics of participants from the International Association of Emergency Managers (IAEM). The results revealed that the emergency management occupation is older and male dominated. The group is well educated; many IAEM members having advanced degrees. The …

"Who's The Man?": Masculinities Studies, Terry Stops, And Police Training, Frank Rudy Cooper

Scholarly Works

In this article, Professor Frank Rudy Cooper examines how masculinity contests specifically, and masculinities studies generally, affect policing. He reviews the hegemonic masculinities school of thought and identifies the following background principles of the hegemonic pattern of masculinities in the United States: (1) men's concern with the opinions of other men; (2) anxiety over whether one has proved one's manhood; (3) a competitiveness reflected in a need to dominate other men and a general aggressiveness; and (4) a denigration of contrast figures reflected in a repudiation of femininity and homosexuality as well as subordination of racial minorities. Then he identifies …

Factors Affecting The Efficacy Of Feedback Use During Source Monitoring, Stephanie Groft Jan 2009

Factors Affecting The Efficacy Of Feedback Use During Source Monitoring, Stephanie Groft

LSU Master's Theses

The current study considers how individual differences in working memory capacity (WMC) affect feedback effectiveness. Participants, selected to have high and low WMC, first watched a video of a crime. Subsequently, a post-test questionnaire was administered concerning events taken from the video and additional information suggested to have occurred in the video. After a 10 minute filler task, participants were given a two-part memory test requiring them to identify the source of the information presented in the test statements. During the training portion of the test, half of the participants received feedback as to the accuracy of their source decisions. …

The Feasibility Of Using Select Landscape Species For Phytoremediation Of Cumene And 4-Cumylphenol Contaminated Groundwater, Kathryn Karsh Fontenot

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Chemical manufactures are often associated with a negative publicity due to chemical spills that can cause human health problems and environmental pollution. Innovative methods such as phytoremediation in lieu of traditional remediation methods are being researched to determine environmentally friendly options for remediation. Phytoremediation was studied as an alternative remediation method for removal of chemicals in a contaminated groundwater plume in Louisiana. The main constituents of concern in the plume were cumene and 4-cumylphenol. Two pilot phytotoxicity studies were funded to determine an optimum tree species for removal and control of the constituents of concern. A greenhouse and hydroponic system …

Turn-Taking And Gaze Behavior Among Cajun French And Cajun English Speakers In Avoyelles Parish, Andrew Mandell Riviere Jan 2009

Turn-Taking And Gaze Behavior Among Cajun French And Cajun English Speakers In Avoyelles Parish, Andrew Mandell Riviere

LSU Master's Theses

Languages are the verbal and non-verbal codes of a culture. A culture houses a language(s) and is comprised of the gaze and distance/use of personal sphere. Linguists and anthropologists have long since argued over which takes priority: culture or language. French and Louisiana are synonymous: it is unimaginable to picture Louisiana without French because French constitutes the culture in Louisiana. Since linguists have debated the priority of language or culture, looking at Louisiana within the confines of this debate proves informative.

The language shift forced upon the residents of South Louisiana by the 1921 State Legislature made English the sole …

Asynchronous Replication Of Metadata Across Multi-Master Servers In Distributed Data Storage Systems, Ismail Akturk Jan 2009

Asynchronous Replication Of Metadata Across Multi-Master Servers In Distributed Data Storage Systems, Ismail Akturk

LSU Master's Theses

In recent years, scientific applications have become increasingly data intensive. The increase in the size of data generated by scientific applications necessitates collaboration and sharing data among the nation's education and research institutions. To address this, distributed storage systems spanning multiple institutions over wide area networks have been developed. One of the important features of distributed storage systems is providing global unified name space across all participating institutions, which enables easy data sharing without the knowledge of actual physical location of data. This feature depends on the ``location metadata'' of all data sets in the system being available to all …

Fifty-three calves (23 male; 30 female) were assigned to one of three dietary treatments which included 3 milk replacers (20/20; 25/15; 28/20) fed once per day at 10% of birth weight through weaning. Calves were offered a 20% CP calf starter and water free choice beginning on day 5. All calves were weaned on day 42. Body weights were measured at birth and weekly through weaning. Additionally, hip height, wither height, and …

Sophisticated Denial-Of-Service Attack Detections Through Integrated Architectural, Os, And Appplication Level Events Monitoring, Ran Tao Jan 2009

Sophisticated Denial-Of-Service Attack Detections Through Integrated Architectural, Os, And Appplication Level Events Monitoring, Ran Tao

LSU Master's Theses

As the first step to defend against DoS attacks, Network-based Intrusion Detection System is well explored and widely used in both commercial tools and research works. Such IDS framework is built upon features extracted from the network traffic, which are application-level features, and is effective in detecting flooding-based DoS attacks. However, in a sophisticated DoS attack, where an attacker manages to bypass the network-based monitors and launch a DoS attack locally, sniffer-based methods have difficulty in differentiating attacks with normal behaviors, since the malicious connection itself behaves in the same manner of normal connections. In this work, we study a …
