Organizational Learning From Extreme Performance Experience: The Impact Of Success And Recovery Experience, June-Young Kim, Ji-Yub Kim, Anne S. Miner
Management Faculty Research and Publications
This paper argues that two different types of a firm’s own extreme performance experiences—success and recovery—and their interactions can generate survival-enhancing learning. Although these types of experience often represent valuable sources of useful learning, several important learning challenges arise when a firm has extremely limited prior experience of the same type. Thus, we theorize that a certain threshold of a given type of experience is required before each type of experience becomes valuable, with low levels of experience harming the organization. Furthermore, we propose that success and recovery experience will interact to enhance each other’s value. These conditions can help …
How Does The Relocation Of Internal Water Affect Resonance Raman Spectra Of Rhodopsin? An Insight From Casscf/Amber Calculations, Tadeusz Andruniow, Massimo Olivucci
How Does The Relocation Of Internal Water Affect Resonance Raman Spectra Of Rhodopsin? An Insight From Casscf/Amber Calculations, Tadeusz Andruniow, Massimo Olivucci
Chemistry Faculty Publications
The effect of relocation of the W2 crystallographic water in bovine rhodopsin has been investigated by comparing and analyzing simulated resonance Raman spectra of I HZX-and 1U19-based quantum mechanics/molecular mechanics (CASSCF/MM) models. The main target is to explore the sensitivity of the simulated resonance Raman spectra to protein cavity change. In particular, we focus on a quantitative investigation of the changes in the vibrational activity of rhodopsin induced by modifications in the protein cavity structure and in the water position. Comparison of the simulated FIR spectra of the Rh-1U19 and Rh-1HZX models with the measured spectrum of rhodopsin reveals that …

Evaluation And Comparison Of 300-Yd And 500-Yd Shallow Water Run Tests As Predictors Of Aerobic Power, Oliver Bellevue, Rebecca Cisar, Craig Cisar, J. Bowen, Susan Wilkinson
International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education
The purposes of the study were to assess and compare the validity of both 300-yd and 500-yd shallow water run (SWR) tests to predict peak aerobic power (VO2peak). Subjects included 18 women and 18 men who performed a graded exercise treadmill test to predict VO2peak and then performed a 300-yd and 500-yd SWR for time. In addition to SWR times, other independent variables included age, gender, body weight, height, leg length, percent body fat, and 300-yd and 500-yd SWR heart rate and rating of perceived exertion. Correlation coefficients with measured VO2peak were r = -.84 and -.87 for the 300-yd …

Maximum And Resting Heart Rate In Treadmill And Deep-Water Running In Male International Volleyball Players, Antonio Cuesta-Vargas, Jeronimo Carmelo Garcia-Romero, Raija Kuisma
International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education
The aim of the study was to compare the physiological responses to deep water running (DWR) compared with treadmill running (TMR) in male international volleyball players. We compared the maximum, recovery and resting heart rates, maximum blood lactate and ratings of perceived exertion between DWR and standard laboratory TMR test. The maximum heart rate (HRmax) was 14.9 bpm lower in water than on land (p = 0.001, 95% confidence interval, 7.74-22.06). The recovery HR at three minutes was 16.4 bpm lower in water (p = 0.012, CI 95%, 4.57-28.23). The differences in the maximum HR and the three-minute recovery HR …

A Coherent Measurement Of Web-Search Relevance, William Mahoney, Peter Hospodka, William Sousan, Ryan Nickell, Qiuming Zhu
Computer Science Faculty Publications
We present a metric for quantitatively assessing the quality of Web searches. The relevance-of-searching-on-target index measures how relevant a search result is with respect to the searcher's interest and intention. The measurement is established on the basis of the cognitive characteristics of common user's online Web-browsing behavior and processes. We evaluated the accuracy of the index function with respect to a set of surveys conducted on several groups of our college students. While the index is primarily intended to be used to compare the Web-search results and tell which is more relevant, it can be extended to other applications. For …

Improving Replica Exchange Using Driven Scaling, Steven W. Rick
Improving Replica Exchange Using Driven Scaling, Steven W. Rick
Chemistry Faculty Publications
Replica exchange is a powerful simulation method in which simulations are run at a series of temperatures, with the highest temperature chosen so phase space can be sampled efficiently. In order for swaps to be accepted, the energy distributions of adjacent replicas must have some overlap. This can create the need for many replicas for large systems. In this paper, we present a new method in which the potential energy is scaled by a parameter, which has an explicit time dependence. Scaling the potential energy broadens the distribution of energy and reduces the number of replicas necessary to span a …

Effects Of Acute And Chronic Endurance Exercise On Intracellular Nitric Oxide In Putative Endothelial Progenitor Cells: Role Of Napdh Oxidase, Nathan T. Jenkins, Sarah Witkowski, Espen E. Spangenburg, James M. Hagberg
Exercise and Sport Studies: Faculty Publications
We sought to delineate the effects of acute and chronic exercise on the regulation of intracellular nitric oxide (NOi) production in putative endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs). Putative EPC colony-forming units (CFUEC) were cultured from blood drawn before and after 30 min of treadmill exercise at 75% of maximal oxygen uptake in active (n = 8) and inactive (n = 8) men. CFU-EC were similar between groups at baseline, but increased after exercise in active men only (P = 0.04). CFU-EC expressed lower NADPH oxidase subunit gp91 phox mRNA and elevated endothelial nitric oxide synthase mRNA in active relative to inactive …

The Lick AGN Monitoring Project targeted 13 nearby Seyfert 1 galaxies with the intent of measuring the masses of their central black holes using reverberation mapping. The sample includes 12 galaxies selected to have black holes with masses roughly in the range 106-107 M ☉, as well as the well-studied active galactic nucleus (AGN) NGC 5548. In conjunction with a spectroscopic monitoring campaign, we obtained broadband B and V images on most nights from 2008 February through 2008 May. The imaging observations were carried out by four telescopes: the 0.76 m Katzman Automatic Imaging Telescope, the …
North Korea: Challenges, Interests, And Policy, James J. Przystup
North Korea: Challenges, Interests, And Policy, James J. Przystup
Strategic Forums
North Korea poses two distinct but interrelated challenges. The first is external: the challenge posed by its nuclear weapons program and the threat of proliferation off the Korean Peninsula. The second is essentially but not wholly internal: the challenge posed by the pending transfer of power in Pyongyang and potential for instability as the process plays out. This complex reality underscores the need for balance and strategic patience if the twin dangers of proliferation and instability on the peninsula are to be successfully managed.
The Kenyan Woman: Her Historical Relationship With The State, Rosalia Wanja Ngugi
The Kenyan Woman: Her Historical Relationship With The State, Rosalia Wanja Ngugi
Theses and Dissertations
The historical relationship between the Kenyan state and women provides lessons and insight as to how women in a colonized state relate to the government and the gains, or lack thereof, that exist. Kenyan women were critical in the nationalist movement that intensified in the 1950s, culminating in independence in 1963. Some women fought in the forests and others were information and food distributors. Many women played a role in furthering the nationalist movement. Independence promised fruits that few women received. Through a historical analysis and an understanding of two women's organizations in Kenya, Maendeleo ya Wanawake Organization and The …

Pointcut Rejuvenation: Recovering Pointcut Expressions In Evolving Aspect-Oriented Software, Raffi Khatchadourian, Phil Greenwood, Awais Rashid, Guoqing Harry Xu

Pointcut fragility is a well-documented problem in Aspect-Oriented Programming; changes to the base-code can lead to join points incorrectly falling in or out of the scope of pointcuts. We present an automated approach that limits fragility problems by providing mechanical assistance in pointcut maintenance. The approach is based on harnessing arbitrarily deep structural commonalities between program elements corresponding to join points selected by a pointcut. The extracted patterns are then applied to later versions to offer suggestions of new join points that may require inclusion. We demonstrate the usefulness of our technique by rejuvenating pointcuts in multiple versions of several …

Leaf Choice In Dryas Iulia (Nymphalidae Heliconiinae) Cyanide Content And Toughness, November 2009, Ashley Arthur
Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation
Vines in the Passifloraceae synthesize cyanogenic glycosides that deter general herbivores, but Heliconiinae butterfly larvae such as Dryas iulia have overcome this and utilize Passiflora leaves as larval food. Ovipositing adult females and larvae may access the suitability of leaves caused by various plant defenses such as cyanide content and leaf toughness. D. iulia adult females show no preference in cyanide content (9.01μg ± 28.3, 5.77μg ± 12.6) or toughness (238.67g ± 78.4, 266.58g ± 123.1) for ovipostion, yet larvae prefer leaves with a significantly lower cyanide content (9.01μg ± 28.3, 0.47μg ± 0.51) then the average available leaf but …

The Applicability Of The River Continuum Concept To The Upper Reaches Of A Neotropical Lower Montane Stream, November 2009, Nicholas Skaff
Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation
The applicability of the River Continuum Concept (RCC) to the upper reaches of Quebrada Máquina, a lower montane stream in Monteverde, Costa Rica, was examined. Macroinvertebrate samples were taken from ten points along the stream from first through fourth order segments. The families of the collected individuals were then categorized based on functional feeding group. The similarity between the families found at each collection point was calculated, along with correlations between the functional groups and various stream characteristics. In most cases, RCC predictions did not apply to Quebrada Máquina. The first (first order) and last (fourth order) sample points were …

Sexual Favoritism: A Cause Of Action Under A "Sex-Plus" Theory, Susan J. Best
Sexual Favoritism: A Cause Of Action Under A "Sex-Plus" Theory, Susan J. Best
Northern Illinois University Law Review
This Comment avers that sexual favoritism is a form of "sex-plus" discrimination. Traditionally, sexual favoritism has been argued as being a form of sexual harassment. Therefore, in order to be successful in a claim for sexual favoritism, a plaintiff must prove sexual harassment. The courts' treatment of sexual favoritism as sexual harassment is problematic for two reasons. First, placing the burden of proof needed for sexual harassment--i.e., proof that the defendant has created a hostile work environment--on plaintiffs injured by sexual favoritism is excessively high. Secondly, because there is no claim under the theory of sexual harassment for instances of …
The Effect Of State Law On The Judge-Jury Relationship In Federal Court, Richard C. Worf Jr.
The Effect Of State Law On The Judge-Jury Relationship In Federal Court, Richard C. Worf Jr.
Northern Illinois University Law Review
The conventional wisdom says that judge-jury rules in diversity cases are governed solely by federal law. My article shows that, to the contrary, under standard Erie principles, state law should (and often already does) exert meaningful influence where state law provides the rule of decision. I begin with a rigorous reexamination of the relevant Supreme Court precedents in this field, and undertake the first study of what the Supreme Court's decision in Gasperini v. Center for Humanities, Inc. means for the judge-jury area. The framework I develop harmonizes Gasperini and the existing Erie cases, demonstrating that state law may influence …
No-Till Tomato Production, Bradley L. Booker
No-Till Tomato Production, Bradley L. Booker
Master's Theses
Tillage increases erosion rates and diminishes the quality of soils but has traditionally been a way to manage weeds and prepare a seedbed. No-till vegetable production can ameliorate the ill-effects of tillage in an economically effective way but has not been studied much in California. The objective of this thesis was to determine the viability of no-till vegetable cropping on the Central Coast of California. Tomatoes were grown in no-till and conventionally tilled treatments. Total yield, fruit weight, weed emergence, soil bulk density, soil aggregate stability, and soil organic carbon content were measured and compared. Yields and soil tests in …

On Coupling A Lumped Parameter Heart Model And A Three-Dimensional Finite Element Aorta Model, H. J. Kim, Irene E. Vignon-Clementel, C. A. Figueroa, John F. Ladisa, K. E. Jansen, Jeffrey A. Feinstein, Charles A. Taylor
Biomedical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications
Aortic flow and pressure result from the interactions between the heart and arterial system. In this work, we considered these interactions by utilizing a lumped parameter heart model as an inflow boundary condition for three-dimensional finite element simulations of aortic blood flow and vessel wall dynamics. The ventricular pressure–volume behavior of the lumped parameter heart model is approximated using a time varying elastance function scaled from a normalized elastance function. When the aortic valve is open, the coupled multidomain method is used to strongly couple the lumped parameter heart model and three-dimensional arterial models and compute ventricular volume, ventricular pressure, …
Pluralism, Liberalism, And Distributive Justice, George Crowder
Pluralism, Liberalism, And Distributive Justice, George Crowder
San Diego Law Review
My general task in this paper is to argue that Ronald Dworkin is incorrect about the indeterminate and paralyzing character of pluralism. The background worry that motivates Dworkin's attack on the truth of pluralism is misplaced. Pluralism is not the field of indeterminacy and reform paralysis that he supposes it to be. More specifically, I argue this point with reference to the question of justice in economic distribution. Using the liberal-pluralist approach I have developed elsewhere, I try to show that a value-pluralist approach to distributive justice, far from leading to inaction or acquiescence in existing patterns of power, commends …
What Value Pluralism Means For Legal-Constitutional Orders, William A. Galston
What Value Pluralism Means For Legal-Constitutional Orders, William A. Galston
San Diego Law Review
I begin by summarizing my version of liberal pluralism, emphasizing that the notion of pluralism implies not only value conflicts and hard choices but also a set of normative principles that are capable of guiding public policy. I then use that framework to adjudicate between rival approaches to distributive justice within liberalism, starting with the basic division between laissez-faire and egalitarian-redistributive approaches and proceeding to the leading alternatives within egalitarianism.
Value Pluralism And The Two Concepts Of Rights, Horacio Spector
Value Pluralism And The Two Concepts Of Rights, Horacio Spector
San Diego Law Review
In Part II, I will indicate how the Will Theory and the Interest Theory each capture distinct features of the usage of right in contemporary moral and legal discourse. However, I will also argue that neither of the two theories is successful in explaining all the properties of rights. In Part III, I will argue that the debate between the two theories is irresolvable because the Will Theory and the Interest Theory reflect the meaning of rights within rival and incommensurable value paradigms existing in today's moral and legal culture. The incommensurability of the underlying value paradigms leads to radical …
Berlin's Methodological Parsimony, Daniel M. Weinstock
Berlin's Methodological Parsimony, Daniel M. Weinstock
San Diego Law Review
In this Article, I want to suggest a third line of argument that can be retrieved from Two Concepts. It is primarily methodological. It enjoins political theorists to define the extension of normative concepts in a manner that makes as perspicuous as possible the various normative considerations that are relevant to political decisionmaking. Although related to the pluralist defense of negative freedom briefly alluded to above, I will suggest that it is distinct from it, and that it allows us to address important but under appreciated lacunae that beset the argument from value pluralism, as well as the argument according …
The Path Between Value Pluralism And Liberal Political Order: Questioning The Connection, Patrick Neal
The Path Between Value Pluralism And Liberal Political Order: Questioning The Connection, Patrick Neal
San Diego Law Review
After a few terminological preliminaries in Part II, I turn to two primary tasks. First, in Part III, I raise questions that seem to me to confront the basic logic of the connection between value pluralism and liberalism. Second, in Part IV, I discuss at length the "argument from diversity" articulated by George Crowder in support of the view that value pluralism supports liberalism. This line of argument is only one of a number that Crowder advances in support of that view, and so doubts about its success do not necessarily implicate the other lines of argument he pursues. However, …
Normative Conflict In International Law, Carmen Pavel
Normative Conflict In International Law, Carmen Pavel
San Diego Law Review
In Part II, I will illustrate the problem of conflict in international law by drawing on two cases in international trade law. I will then argue in Parts III and IV that legal conflict often represents a genuine normative conflict grounded in our multiple, incommensurable, and potentially conflicting moral commitments. In doing so, I will deflect potential skepticism about the reality of normative conflict in international law. Drawing from existing international legal practice, I will show in Part IV that we can resort to a substantial toolbox of rules and principles to reconcile legal norms that are in tension with …
The Plural Implications Of Value Pluralism: A Comment On Maimon Schwarzschild's On This Side Of The Law And On That Side Of The Law, Iddo Porat
San Diego Law Review
I suggest that there are two main views that can be found in Professor Schwarzschild's paper. The first is a strong suspicion of any type of centralized power, especially judicial power, as potentially stifling the plurality of values in society and imposing a monolithic view from above. This theme makes federalism and judicial activism especially central issues in the paper, and I will concentrate on both of them in my comment. The second view regarding the application of value pluralism is more subtle. It is a Burkean defense of traditional institutions, arguing that they represent a way of life in …
Value Pluralism Does Not Support Liberalism: A Comment On William A. Galston's What Value Pluralism Means For Legal-Constitutional Orders, Richard J. Arnesto
Value Pluralism Does Not Support Liberalism: A Comment On William A. Galston's What Value Pluralism Means For Legal-Constitutional Orders, Richard J. Arnesto
San Diego Law Review
In a free society, there is a strong presumption in favor of letting individuals act as they choose without interference by others. William A. Galston has developed this argument with exemplary clarity. He is wrong. The idea that value incommensurability is a reason for toleration of diverse ways of life and protection of the individual's freedom to choose among diverse ways of life is a mistake. Value pluralism does not establish any normative presumption in favor of liberty, so the worry "does this presumption hold without limit," or "are there good reasons that constrain it at some point," is otiose.
