Who Uses Community-Based Youth Shelters? An Inter-Group And Intra-Group Analysis, Jennifer Mcclendon Jan 2009

Who Uses Community-Based Youth Shelters? An Inter-Group And Intra-Group Analysis, Jennifer Mcclendon

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

Community-based youth shelters are the primary method of intervention designed to meet the complex needs of at-risk youth who leave home before they have developed the skills to live independently. This research examines shelter users' patterns of cross-sector service use to better understand the needs and resources of shelter residents. The aims of this study are 1) to perform an inter-group analysis, comparing sheltered youth with status offense runaways and foster care runaways, and 2) to explore the population of emergency shelter residents using an intra-group analysis, determining whether distinct profiles of sheltered youth exist, based on individual characteristics and …

Associative Memory Processes In Schizophrenia, Aaron Bonner-Jackson Jan 2009

Associative Memory Processes In Schizophrenia, Aaron Bonner-Jackson

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

Individuals with schizophrenia demonstrate cognitive deficits in a number of domains, including episodic memory: EM). Memory for both individual items and associations between items is impaired in schizophrenia, with some indication of a more severe deficit in associative memory. Furthermore, such memory impairments have been consistently linked with abnormalities in brain activation during both encoding and retrieval. However, certain experimental manipulations at the encoding and retrieval stages of EM significantly benefit memory performance in schizophrenia, suggesting that a strategic processing deficit may underlie memory impairment in schizophrenia. Additionally, the provision of beneficial encoding strategies increases encoding-related brain activity in key …

Discovery Of A Novel Metalloregular Family: Structure/Function Studies Of E. Coli Rcnr, Jeffrey Iwig Jan 2009

Discovery Of A Novel Metalloregular Family: Structure/Function Studies Of E. Coli Rcnr, Jeffrey Iwig

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

The first row transition metal ions- Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu and Zn are vital cofactors for proteins involved in diverse processes including photosynthesis, oxidative respiration and protein translation. Despite these essential functions, excess metal ions can lead to cell death through the generation of oxidative damage or the occupation of non-native metal sites. Acquiring metal ions from the environment while limiting possible toxic effects requires the coordinated regulation of metal uptake, trafficking and efflux, which in bacteria is often carried out by metal-responsive transcription factors: metalloregulators). Nickel homeostasis in E. coli is an ideal model system for understanding the …

Developing New Methodologies For Crosslinked Polymeric Nanostructure Syntheses, Chemoselective Modifications, And Applications As Imaging And Delivery Agents, Guorong Sun Jan 2009

Developing New Methodologies For Crosslinked Polymeric Nanostructure Syntheses, Chemoselective Modifications, And Applications As Imaging And Delivery Agents, Guorong Sun

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

The overall emphasis of this dissertation research includes the syntheses of amphiphilic block copolymers bearing functional groups through controlled radical polymerization techniques, followed by the aqueous assembly of these block copolymer precursors to construct polymeric nanostructures with different sizes and morphologies. Further chemical modification of the nanostructures afforded functional crosslinked nano-objects with reporting probes for imaging and biocompatible "stealth" materials for tuning the in vivo fate of nanostructures. Amphiphilic block copolymers poly(acrylic acid)-block-polystyrene: PAA-b-PS) with well-defined structures were prepared through nitroxide-mediated radical polymerization: NMP). Using novel pre-functionalization strategies, these block copolymer precursors were functionalized with DOTA for chelating 64Cu and …

The Effect Of Limb Movement On The Lumbopelvic Region In People With Low Back Pain, Sara Scholtes Jan 2009

The Effect Of Limb Movement On The Lumbopelvic Region In People With Low Back Pain, Sara Scholtes

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

Low back pain: LBP) affects up to 80% of the population at some point in their lifetime. Several models have been proposed to explain the persistent and recurrent course of LBP. In particular, the Movement System Impairment model proposes that lumbopelvic motion that begins soon after the start of an active movement is important to LBP because of its potential contribution to increased frequency of lumbopelvic motion across the day. The purpose of this dissertation is to examine aspects of this model, focusing specifically on lumbopelvic motion during limb movements. In Chapter 2, we examine whether men and women with …

Development Of Shell-Crosslinked Knedel-Like Nanoparticles As Intracellular Delivery Vehicles And Gene Regulation Agents, Ke Zhang Jan 2009

Development Of Shell-Crosslinked Knedel-Like Nanoparticles As Intracellular Delivery Vehicles And Gene Regulation Agents, Ke Zhang

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

This dissertation focuses on the development of polymer-based nanomaterials, termed shell-crosslinked knedel-like: SCK) nanoparticles, as vehicles to carry specific guest molecules or guest structures into the cell. Detailed synthetic procedures for and characterization of well-defined block copolymers, as well as the nanostructures resulted from their self-assembly are reported. The nanoparticles exhibited different but controlled sizes and shapes, depending on the conditions for their preparation. To incorporate functionality into these materials, both pre- and post-particle functionalization methods, as well as their combination, were used. The nanostructures involved in this dissertation include protein transduction domain: PTD)-functionalized SCK, folate-functionalized SCK and cationic SCK: …

Professional Malpractice In A World Of Amateurs, Thomas D. Morgan Jan 2009

Professional Malpractice In A World Of Amateurs, Thomas D. Morgan

GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works

An increasing number of tasks once reserved to lawyers are now being performed by non-lawyers. That reality seems likely to continue. The question then becomes against what standard of performance such “amateur” practice should be assessed. One answer might be that a non-lawyer should be guilty of malpractice if the work is performed below the level of quality to which a lawyer would be held. This paper argues that the work should instead be judged against the standard of performance the non-lawyer purported to be able to deliver.

Saving The Unitary Executive Theory From Those Who Would Distort And Abuse It: A Review Of The Unitary Executive, By Steven G. Calabresi And Christopher Yoo, Richard J. Pierce Jr Jan 2009

Saving The Unitary Executive Theory From Those Who Would Distort And Abuse It: A Review Of The Unitary Executive, By Steven G. Calabresi And Christopher Yoo, Richard J. Pierce Jr

GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works

Calabresi and Yoo make three important contributions to the literature on separation of powers in their new book. First, they seek to rescue the unitary executive theory from the Bush Administration lawyers who have discredited the theory in the eyes of many by relying on it to support outlandish claims of presidential power that are unrelated to the unitary executive theory. Second, they make a persuasive case for the unitary executive theory by explaining why a president must have the power to remove executive branch officers and to control policy making in the executive branch. Third, they document the ways …

Making Sense Of Procedural Injury, Richard J. Pierce Jr Jan 2009

Making Sense Of Procedural Injury, Richard J. Pierce Jr

GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works

This essay uses the Supreme Court’s 2009 opinion describing the version of the harmless error rule courts must use in administrative law cases as a point of entry in attempting to understand the Court’s 1992 opinion recognizing that 'procedural rights are special' for standing purposes. It concludes that courts should apply an easy-to-meet plausibility test in determining whether an agency’s refusal to provide a procedure required by statute or by the constitution has a causal relationship with the challenged agency action sufficient to allow the petitioner to obtain review of the action based on a procedural injury theory. Such a …

A Case Study Of A Rural Iowa School Preparing To Meet New State Guidelines For School Libraries, Karla Steege Krueger Jan 2009

A Case Study Of A Rural Iowa School Preparing To Meet New State Guidelines For School Libraries, Karla Steege Krueger

Curriculum & Instruction Faculty Publications

A qualitative case study highlighting one rural Iowa elementary school provided insight into the issue of small schools without library programs as they are preparing to meet the Iowa reinstatement of the requirement for school library programs. The site was purposefully chosen because it has been operating without a school library program or professional teacher-librarian district-wide. All eight teachers and the nonendorsed library associate from one elementary school participated in either a focus group or semistructured interviews. The four district administrators were interviewed individually. Related documents were consulted. This study examined the status of the school library program, analyzed the …

“In The Shadow Of A Concrete Forest”: Transportation Politics In Portland, Oregon, And The Revolt Against The Mount Hood Freeway, 1955-1976, Val C. Ballestrem

Dissertations and Theses

In 1955, The Oregon State Highway Department helped usher in the freeway building era in Portland by publishing its plan for 14 modern freeways designed to crisscross the city. A major component of that report was the Mount Hood Freeway, a route designed to pass through southeast Portland, connecting the city to its expanding eastern suburbs. Other freeway routes in the Portland area were given precedence over the Mount Hood Freeway and by 1969, when the route obtained federal interstate status, urban freeways across the nation had become highly controversial. Over the next seven years a struggle ensued pitting those …

Movements of deer can affect population dynamics, spatial redistribution, and transmission and spread of diseases. Our goal was to model the movement of deer in Nebraska in an attempt to predict the potential for spread of chronic wasting disease (CWD) into eastern Nebraska. We collared and radio-tracked >600 white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) and mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus) in Nebraska during 1990–2006.We observed large displacements (>10 km) for both species and sexes of deer, including migrations up to 100 km and dispersals up to 50 km. Average distance traveled between successive daily locations was 166m for …

It Depends, Gary S. Lawson Jan 2009

It Depends, Gary S. Lawson

Peter Strauss stated at the outset of this Symposium that the participants were chosen in part for the likelihood that they would generate “intelligent disagreement.” By that standard, I may have been a poor choice--and if that is the case, I will leave it to the reader to determine whether it is a function of the first or second term in the quoted phrase. At first glance, it looks as though I sharply disagree with Rick Pildes and Harold Bruff about whether the PCAOB's members are principal officers who must be appointed by the President with the advice and consent …

The Place Of History And Philosophy In The Moral Reading Of The American Constitution, James E. Fleming Jan 2009

The Place Of History And Philosophy In The Moral Reading Of The American Constitution, James E. Fleming

Faculty Scholarship

Dworkin argues that commitment to interpretive fidelity requires that we recognize that the Constitution embodies abstract moral principles rather than laying down a particular historical conception, and that interpreting those principles requires fresh judgments of political theory about how they are best understood. This interpretive strategy — Dworkin's ‘moral reading’ of the Constitution — stands in opposition to the narrow originalists' claim that interpretive fidelity requires following the rules laid down by the framers of the Constitution. Some theorists have responded to the originalists by attempting to carve out an intermediate theory between narrow originalism and the moral reading. Dworkin …

Protecting Hiv Positive Women’S Human’S Rights: Recommendations For The Obama Administration, Aziza Ahmed, Catherine Hanssens, Brook Kelly

Faculty Scholarship

To bring the United States in line with prevailing human rights standards, its National HIV/AIDS Strategy will need to explicitly commit to a human rights framework when developing programmes and policies that serve the unaddressed needs of women. This paper focuses on two aspects of the institutionalized mistreatment of people with HIV: 1) the criminalization of their consensual sexual conduct; and 2) the elimination of informed and documented consensual participation in their diagnosis through reliance on mandatory and opt-out testing policies. More than half of US states have HIV-specific laws criminalizing the consensual sexual activity of people with HIV, regardless …

Answering The Millennium Call For The Right To Maternal Health: The Need To Eliminate User Fees, Margaux J. Hall, Aziza Ahmed, Stephanie E. Swanson

Faculty Scholarship

Complications during childbirth and pregnancy are a main source of death and disability among women of reproductive age. Approximately 536,000 women die from pregnancy-related complications each year. Developing countries suffer most profoundly, accounting for 99% of deaths. The world's nations, by endorsing U.N. Millennium Development Goals, recognized that most deaths are preventable; they have pledged to reduce maternal mortality by 75% by 2015. This Article assesses the barriers presented by user fees - formal charges for health services still charged by many countries - to the attainment of MDGs. It shows that user fees hamper healthcare access, particularly in emergency …

Taming Augustine’S Monstrosity: Aquinas’S Notion Of Use In The Struggle For Moral Growth, Theresa W. Tobin Jan 2009

Taming Augustine’S Monstrosity: Aquinas’S Notion Of Use In The Struggle For Moral Growth, Theresa W. Tobin

Philosophy Faculty Research and Publications

In Book VI of his Confessions, Saint Augustine offers a detailed description of one of the most famous cases of weakness of will in the history of philosophy. Augustine characterizes his experience as a monstrous situation in which he both wills and does not will moral growth, but he is at odds to explain this phenomenon. In this paper, I argue that Aquinas’s action theory offers important resources for explaining Augustine’s monstrosity. On Aquinas’s schema, human acts are composed of various operations of intellect and will, and thus are subject to disintegration. In order to capture the gap in …

The Fair Information Principles: A Comparison Of U.S. And Canadian Privacy Policy As Applied To The Private Sector, Shane Crounse

Theses

U.S. consumers are worried about their privacy and their personal information. High profile cases of identity theft involving companies losing the private information of hundreds of thousands of customers have only served to elevate the mistrust consumers have for companies that collect and share their personal information. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is charged with protecting U.S. consumers from fraud, deception, and unfair business practices in the marketplace; a task made difficult by an overarching need to balance the rights of the individuals against the security needs of the country and the free flow of information required by a free …

An Examination Of Therapist Characteristics Related To A Beneficial Therapeutic Relationship: The Trainee Characteristics Inventory, Kristoffer S. Schnur

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

It is now a widely held belief that psychotherapy is effective. In fact, teasing out the exact components is a difficult task. Recent research indicates that therapist characteristics are highly correlated with the ability to form a beneficial working alliance; however, understanding the exact nature of these characteristics is under-studied. Thus, the purpose of this study is to develop an empirical instrument that identifies and measures therapist characteristics related to the formation of a beneficial working alliance. Developing a more thorough understanding of the characteristics is critical since the relationship has been shown to be a robust predictor of clinical …

Marital Satisfaction: Ideal Versus Real Mate, Angela L. Beachkofsky

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Relationships play a significant role in emotional and physical well-being. Although many people believe that satisfying close relationships constitute the very best thing in life” (Berscheid, 1999, p. 260), the factors which contribute to relationship satisfaction have remained a mystery over the centuries. With almost half of all first marriages ending in divorce (United States Census Bureau, 2002), researchers have the opportunity to investigate potential reasons behind the apparent unhappiness and create interventions to support couples. This paper outlines the different, sometimes contradictory, aspects of marital satisfaction (personality, interactions, and expectations) and proposes a more comprehensive approach to explain some …
