The Quiescent Spectral Energy Distribution Of V404 Cyg, R. I. Hynes, C. K. Bradley, M. Rupen, E. Gallo, R. P. Fender, J. Casares, C. Zurita Nov 2009

The Quiescent Spectral Energy Distribution Of V404 Cyg, R. I. Hynes, C. K. Bradley, M. Rupen, E. Gallo, R. P. Fender, J. Casares, C. Zurita

Faculty Publications

We present a multiwavelength study of the black hole X-ray binary V404 Cyg in quiescence, focusing upon the spectral energy distribution (SED). Radio, optical, ultraviolet (UV) and X-ray coverage is simultaneous. We supplement the SED with additional non-simultaneous data in the optical through infrared where necessary. The compiled SED is the most complete available for this, the X-ray and radio brightest quiescent black hole system. We find no need for a substantial contribution from accretion light from the near-UV to the near-IR, and in particular the weak UV emission constrains published spectral models for V404 Cyg. We confirm that no …

Evaluating The Evolution Of The Red River System Based On In Situ U-Pb Dating And Hf Isotope Analysis Of Zircons, Long Van Hoang, Fu Yuan Wu, Peter D. Clift, Anna Wysocka, Anna Swierczewska

Faculty Publications

The Red River originates from SW China and SE Tibet and has a total length >1000 km. In this study, we present new U-Pb dating and Hf isotopic analysis of zircon grains, from both modern and paleoriver sands in order to constrain the provenance of the modern river and to decipher drainage evolution through time. Our data show that the Yangtze and Songpan Garze blocks are the most important sources for sediment, although this material is mostly reworked via younger sedimentary rocks in the upper reaches of the Red River. Sands in the Da River and to a lesser extent …

Arabidopsis Actin-Related Protein Arp5 In Multicellular Development And Dna Repair, Muthugapatti K. Kandasamy, Elizabeth C. Mckinney, Roger B. Deal, Aaron P. Smith, Richard B. Meagher

Faculty Publications

Actin-related protein 5 (ARP5) is a conserved subunit of the INO80 chromatin-remodeling complex in yeast and mammals. We have characterized the expression and subcellular distribution of Arabidopsis thaliana ARP5 and explored its role in the epigenetic control of multicellular development and DNA repair. ARP5-specific monoclonal antibodies localized ARP5 protein to the nucleoplasm of interphase cells in Arabidopsis and Nicotiana tabacum. ARP5 promoter-reporter fusions and the ARP5 protein are ubiquitously expressed. A null mutant and a severe knockdown allele produced moderately dwarfed plants with all organs smaller than the wild type. The small and slightly deformed organs such as leaves and …

“People Like Us” In Pursuit Of God And Rights: Islamic Feminist Discourse And Sisters In Islam In Malaysia, Yasmin Moll Nov 2009

“People Like Us” In Pursuit Of God And Rights: Islamic Feminist Discourse And Sisters In Islam In Malaysia, Yasmin Moll

Journal of International Women's Studies

This paper attempts to critically situate the discourse of Islamic feminism and its activist incarnations such as the Malaysian group Sisters in Islam within an analytical framework that seeks to look beyond the all-too-common trope of “multiple modernities.” The paper examines the conditions of possibility enabling such groups and discourses, looking in particular at the modern nation-state, and the imbrications of social discourses of rights and religious discourses of individual belief within this state. I argue that the repertoires of reasoning called forth by Sisters in Islam partake in the objectifying rationalities of the Malaysian state when it comes to …

Semi-Parametric Of Sample Selection Model Using Fuzzy Concepts, L. Muhamad Safiih, A. A. Kamil, M. T. Abu Osman Nov 2009

Semi-Parametric Of Sample Selection Model Using Fuzzy Concepts, L. Muhamad Safiih, A. A. Kamil, M. T. Abu Osman

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

The sample selection model has been studied in the context of semi-parametric methods. With the deficiencies of the parametric model, such as inconsistent estimators, semi-parametric estimation methods provide better alternatives. This article focuses on the context of fuzzy concepts as a hybrid to the semiparametric sample selection model. The better approach when confronted with uncertainty and ambiguity is to use the tools provided by the theory of fuzzy sets, which are appropriate for modeling vague concepts. A fuzzy membership function for solving uncertainty data of a semi-parametric sample selection model is introduced as a solution to the problem.

Jmasm28: Gibbs Sampling For 2pno Multi-Unidimensional Item Response Theory Models (Fortran), Yanyan Sheng, Todd C. Headrick

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

A Fortran 77 subroutine is provided for implementing the Gibbs sampling procedure to a multiunidimensional IRT model for binary item response data with the choice of uniform and normal prior distributions for item parameters. In addition to posterior estimates of the model parameters and their Monte Carlo standard errors, the algorithm also estimates the correlations between distinct latent traits. The subroutine requires the user to have access to the IMSL library. The source code is available at http://www.siuc.edu/~epse1/sheng/Fortran/MUIRT/GSMU2.FOR. An executable file is also provided for download at http://www.siuc.edu/~epse1/sheng/Fortran/MUIRT/EXAMPLE.zip to demonstrate the implementation of the algorithm on simulated data.

Setting The Standard: A Critique Of Bonnie's Competency Standard And The Potential Of Problem-Solving Theory For Self-Representation At Trial, E. Lea Johnston Nov 2009

Setting The Standard: A Critique Of Bonnie's Competency Standard And The Potential Of Problem-Solving Theory For Self-Representation At Trial, E. Lea Johnston

UF Law Faculty Publications

In Indiana v. Edwards, the U.S. Supreme Court held that the Sixth Amendment permits a trial court to impose a higher competency standard for self-representation than to stand trial. The Court declined to specify the contents of a permissible representational competence standard, but cited with support the construct of adjudicative competence developed by Professor Richard Bonnie. While Bonnie's proposal may provide an appropriate framework for evaluating the competence of represented defendants' decisions, it is at most a starting point for defining the capacities needed for self-representation at trial. This Article begins by exposing three reasons why Bonnie's approach is …

Anonymity In Cyberspace: What Can We Learn From John Doe?, Lyrissa Barnett Lidsky Nov 2009

Anonymity In Cyberspace: What Can We Learn From John Doe?, Lyrissa Barnett Lidsky

UF Law Faculty Publications

This Article examines the evolution of the law governing libel suits against anonymous "John Doe" defendants based on Internet speech. Between 1999 and 2009, courts crafted new First Amendment doctrines to protect Internet speakers from having their anonymity automatically stripped away upon the filing of a libel action. Courts also adapted existing First Amendment protections for hyperbole, satire, and other nonfactual speech to protect the distinctive discourse of Internet message boards. Despite these positive developments, the current state of the law is unsatisfactory. Because the scope of protection for anonymous Internet speech varies greatly by jurisdiction, resourceful plaintiffs can make …

Imitation In Fragile X Syndrome: Implications For Autism, Marta Macedoni-Luksic, Laura Greiss Hess, Sally J. Rogers, David Gosar, Kerrie Lemons-Chitwood, Randi Hagerman Nov 2009

Imitation In Fragile X Syndrome: Implications For Autism, Marta Macedoni-Luksic, Laura Greiss Hess, Sally J. Rogers, David Gosar, Kerrie Lemons-Chitwood, Randi Hagerman

Occupational Therapy | Faculty Scholarship

To address the specific impairment of imitation in autism, the imitation abilities of 22 children with fragile X syndrome (FXS) with and without autism were compared. Based on previous research, we predicted that children with FXS and autism would have significantly more difficulty with non-meaningful imitation tasks. After controlling for full-scale IQ and age, the groups did not differ in their overall imitation accuracy scores, but analysis of error patterns revealed that children with FXS and autism made more groping errors and additional movements than the comparison group. These error patterns are consistent with the hypothesis that an action production …

Muscular Procedure: Conditional Deference In The Executive Detention Cases, Joseph Landau Nov 2009

Muscular Procedure: Conditional Deference In The Executive Detention Cases, Joseph Landau

Washington Law Review

The executive detention cases of the past several years demonstrate a rare but critical assertion of procedural law where the political branches fail to legislate or to properly implement substantive law. This is “muscular procedure”—the invocation of a procedural device to condition deference on political branch integrity. Courts have affected the law of national security in profound ways by requiring the political branches to adhere to a judicially imposed standard of transparency and deliberation. Courts have resolved the merits of individual enemy combatant challenges by rejecting executive branch decisions based on absolute secrecy, innuendo, tentativeness, or multiple levels of hearsay, …

That They May Be One: Spiritual Formation And Its Locus In Community, Phillip G. Carnes Nov 2009

That They May Be One: Spiritual Formation And Its Locus In Community, Phillip G. Carnes

Doctor of Ministry

American Christians, as a whole, lack a spiritual maturity that infuses the whole of their lives with Christlikeness. Additionally, Americans suffer from an epidemic of loneliness. These two problems are related. We will demonstrate that American Christians lack spiritual maturity, in part, because they have privatized their faith and made spiritual formation an individual endeavor. Furthermore, we will show that spiritual formation is best located and grounded within a community context. Humans are social creatures. It is becoming ever more widely recognized that social isolation and loneliness are root causes of much psychosocial dysfunction. Humans do not function well if …

Behavior Of Buff-Breasted Sandpipers (Tryngites Subruficollis) During Migratory Stopover In Agricultural Fields, John P. Mccarty, Joel G. Jorgensen, Lareesa Wolfenbarger

Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: Staff Research Publications

Background: Understanding the behavior of birds in agricultural habitats can be the first step in evaluating the conservation implications of birds’ use of landscapes shaped by modern agriculture. The existence and magnitude of risk from agricultural practices and the quality of resources agricultural lands provide will be determined largely by how birds use these habitats. Buff-breasted Sandpipers (Tryngites subruficollis) are a species of conservation concern. During spring migration large numbers of Buff-breasted Sandpipers stopover in row crop fields in the Rainwater Basin region of Nebraska. We used behavioral observations as a first step in evaluating how Buff-breasted Sandpipers …

God’S Shield: The Relationship Between God Attachment, Relationship Satisfaction, And Adult Child Of An Alcoholic (Acoa) Status In A Sample Of Evangelical Graduate Counseling Students, Karin Mcpeak Dumont Nov 2009

God’S Shield: The Relationship Between God Attachment, Relationship Satisfaction, And Adult Child Of An Alcoholic (Acoa) Status In A Sample Of Evangelical Graduate Counseling Students, Karin Mcpeak Dumont

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The conceptual framework for this study focused on adult attachments and adult relationship satisfaction being defined and supported by initial attachment style. The literature review consistently revealed that individuals with a secure attachment style report higher relationship satisfaction than individuals with an insecure style. The purpose of this study was to explore the effect of attachment to God and a history of an alcoholic parent on adult relationship satisfaction while controlling for romantic attachment. A total of 267 participants from an evangelical graduate program in counseling were administered the Children of Alcoholics Screening Test (CAST), Attachment to God Inventory (AGI), …

Sparse Hypergraphs And Pebble Game Algorithms, Ileana Streinu, Louis Theran Nov 2009

Sparse Hypergraphs And Pebble Game Algorithms, Ileana Streinu, Louis Theran

Computer Science: Faculty Publications

A hypergraph G=(V,E) is (k,ℓ)-sparse if no subset V′⊂V spans more than k|V′|−ℓ hyperedges. We characterize (k,ℓ)-sparse hypergraphs in terms of graph theoretic, matroidal and algorithmic properties. We extend several well-known theorems of Haas, Lovász, Nash-Williams, Tutte, and White and Whiteley, linking arboricity of graphs to certain counts on the number of edges. We also address the problem of finding lower-dimensional representations of sparse hypergraphs, and identify a critical behavior in terms of the sparsity parameters k and ℓ. Our constructions extend the pebble games of Lee and Streinu [A. Lee, I. Streinu, Pebble game algorithms …

Modeling And Simulation Of Interactions Between Blast Waves And Structures For Blast Wave Mitigation, Wen Peng Nov 2009

Modeling And Simulation Of Interactions Between Blast Waves And Structures For Blast Wave Mitigation, Wen Peng

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Explosions occur in military conflicts as well as in various industrial applications. Air blast waves generated by large explosions move outward with high velocity, pressure and temperature. The blast waves not only incapacitate military and civilian personnel, but also damages buildings, vehicles, and other properties. Hence, there has been extensive research on how to mitigate blast wave effects. Understanding the interactions between blast waves and structures is a very important step in the development of devices for blast wave mitigation. The objective of this dissertation is to explore the complicated physical problem of blast waves impacting structures. The structures comprise …

Addressing The Lack Of Male Elementary School Teachers: Factors That Influence Grade-Level Preference, Michael David Patrick

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The purpose of this study was to determine which, if any, specific factors are deterring male teachers from pursuing elementary education. The number of male elementary teachers in America's public school systems had continued to decline, and this survey sought to discover what specific factors had contributed to this. This study surveyed 231 male public school teachers from six different school districts in Tennessee, Georgia, and Missouri. Male participants recorded their viewpoints regarding male elementary teachers while at the same time they provided personal information concerning factors which contributed to their own personal grade level selection. Participants were surveyed to …

Impact Of Rank-Based Normalizing Transformations On The Accuracy Of Test Scores, Shira R. Solomon, Shlomo S. Sawilowsky

Theoretical and Behavioral Foundations of Education Faculty Publications

The purpose of this article is to provide an empirical comparison of rank-based normalization methods for standardized test scores. A series of Monte Carlo simulations were performed to compare the Blom, Tukey, Van der Waerden and Rankit approximations in terms of achieving the T score’s specified mean and standard deviation and unit normal skewness and kurtosis. All four normalization methods were accurate on the mean but were variably inaccurate on the standard deviation. Overall, deviation from the target moments was pronounced for the even moments but slight for the odd moments. Rankit emerged as the most accurate method among all …

The Effective Target Of The Social Security Disability Benefits Reform Act Of 1984, Perry Douglas Singleton Nov 2009

The Effective Target Of The Social Security Disability Benefits Reform Act Of 1984, Perry Douglas Singleton

Center for Policy Research

A substantial portion of the rise in Social Security Disability Insurance rolls since 1984 has been attributed to the Social Security Disability Benefits Reform Act. Using data from the National Health Insurance Survey, I examine whom the act effectively targeted. The analysis shows that new enrollees were demonstrably taller than previous enrollees, suggesting that the act expanded eligibility to individuals in better health and socioeconomic circumstances. However, the estimated effect of increased SSDI eligibility on employment is low, suggesting that the act targeted males who would have otherwise been unemployed.

The Structural Case For Vertical Maximalism, Tara Leigh Grove Nov 2009

The Structural Case For Vertical Maximalism, Tara Leigh Grove

Faculty Publications

Many prominent jurists and scholars, including those with outlooks as diverse as Chief Justice John Roberts and Cass Sunstein, have recently advocated a “minimalist” approach to opinion writing at the Supreme Court. They assert that the Court should issue narrow, fact-bound decisions that do not resolve much beyond the case before it. I argue that minimalism, as employed by the current Supreme Court, is in tension with the structure of the Constitution. Article III and the Supremacy Clause, along with historical evidence from the Founding Era, suggest that the Constitution creates a hierarchical judiciary and gives the Court a “supreme” …
