Malaysian Firms Cost Of Equity: Systematic Versus Downside Risk, F. Swee Sim, G. Kim Leng Nov 2009

Malaysian Firms Cost Of Equity: Systematic Versus Downside Risk, F. Swee Sim, G. Kim Leng

Research Publications (2006 to 2010)

Of late, concerns are raised against the application of the classical one-factor CAPM in emerging markets. Adopting some of the emerging market models reviewed in Pereiro (2001), together with the two-factor CAPM models proposed in this study, we make comparison between systematic and downside risk measures to estimate the cost of equity of Malaysian firms over 2000-2007. Overall, our results are consistent with Estrada (2000, 2001)’s findings which support downside risk measures over standard risk measures. Based on standard model selection criteria we find that two-factor downside betas have the highest explanatory power on actual stock returns, compared to single-factor …

Market, Country And World Effects On Regional Equity Market Integration, H. Chee-Wooi, G. Kim-Leng Nov 2009

Market, Country And World Effects On Regional Equity Market Integration, H. Chee-Wooi, G. Kim-Leng

Research Publications (2006 to 2010)

This study explores the fundamental driving forces of regional equity market integration. The determinant factors are being categorized into market attribute, economic fundamentals and world information. Our sample consists of 26 equity markets of five regional trading blocs, namely AFTA, CER, EFTA, EU and NAFTA over the period of January 1999 to August 2005. We measure market integration based on pricing errors as proposed by Korajczyk (1996) and Levine and Zervos (1998). Using panel regressions, our results show that regional equity integration is driven internally, where only individual-market volatility and economic fundamentals play a significant role in the process. Intra-bloc …

Yours, Mine, And Ours: Law Firm Property Disputes, Douglas R. Richmond Nov 2009

Yours, Mine, And Ours: Law Firm Property Disputes, Douglas R. Richmond

Northern Illinois University Law Review

Lateral movement by lawyers at all levels is now common. Ours is an age of lawyer mobility. It is also an age of client transience. Clients routinely change law firms, sometimes because they move with lateral lawyers, and sometimes for their own reasons. Understandably, lawyer and client mobility have spawned difficult questions about law firm property rights. For competitive reasons, law firms do not want departing lawyers taking the firm's intellectual capital or property with them when they move laterally. Client files are a treasure trove of intellectual capital and property that firms may wish to protect when clients shift …

Assessing The Merits Of The Ctbt, David W. Hafemeister Nov 2009

Assessing The Merits Of The Ctbt, David W. Hafemeister

Physics

The Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons and the nonproliferation regime have been weakened; perhaps no other issue demonstrates this as dramatically as the status of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT), the ratification of which the U.S. Senate rejected in October 1999. Despite the U.S. rejection, the test ban has strong international support—the most recent vote to promote the CTBT in the UN General Assembly passed overwhelmingly, with 175 votes to 1 (the United States) and three abstentions. The Obama administration favors U.S. ratification of the CTBT, but this is no guarantee that Washington will ratify the test ban. …

Combination Of Vandetanib, Radiotherapy, And Irinotecan In The Lovo Human Colorectal Cancer Xenograft Model., Phyllis Wachsberger, Randy Burd, Anderson Ryan, Constantine Daskalakis, Adam P. Dicker

Department of Radiation Oncology Faculty Papers

PURPOSE: The tumor growth kinetics of the human LoVo colorectal xenograft model was assessed in response to vandetanib, an orally available receptor tyrosine kinase inhibitor, radiotherapy (RT), or irinotecan (CPT-11), as single therapies and in combination. METHODS AND MATERIALS: LoVo cells were injected subcutaneously into the right hind limb (5 x 10(6) cells in 100 microL phosphate-buffered saline) of athymic NCR NUM mice and tumors were grown to a volume of 200-300 mm(3) before treatment. Vandetanib was administered at 50 mg/kg daily orally for 14 days starting on Day 1. RT was given as three fractions (3 x 3 Gy) …

An Experimental Study Of Differences In Reading Photo Books By Presentation Media: Print Vs. Screen, Ya-Fang Tsai Nov 2009

An Experimental Study Of Differences In Reading Photo Books By Presentation Media: Print Vs. Screen, Ya-Fang Tsai

Theses

As photography technology changes, the penetration of digital cameras is increasing, especially among young users. Compared to conventional camera users who print most of their images, digital camera users print about one-third of their digital images (PMA, 2009b, p. 10). Moreover, only 5 percent of camera phone users make photo prints (Henning, 2008, p. 4). One popular photo-finishing product is the photo book. The objective of this research was to determine whether people interacted differently with photographic content presented in print versus on screen. This research was focused on: 1. Time spent interacting with photo books. 2. Differences of recall …

Enhancing Dynamics Courses With Model Eliciting Activities, Lawrence H. Fong Nov 2009

Enhancing Dynamics Courses With Model Eliciting Activities, Lawrence H. Fong

Master's Theses

Model eliciting activities are assignments which require students to develop models to describe realistic situations. Every MEA follows six principles: model-construction, reality, self-assessment, model documentation, generalizability, and effective prototype. The six principles provide a solid guideline in which instructors can develop more MEAs, which can then be shared and used among several participating universities. Under NSF CCLI Grant #0717595, Cal Poly is currently developing Model Eliciting Activities for the subject of Mechanical Engineering.

This report documents the undertakings to implement and enhance two Model Eliciting Activities (MEAs) into the Cal Poly curriculum. Specifically, the development of the Vehicle Accident Reconstruction …

The Art Of Aidagara: Ethics, Aesthetics, And The Quest For An Ontology Of Social Existence In Watsuji Tetsurō’S Rinrigaku, James Mark Shields Nov 2009

The Art Of Aidagara: Ethics, Aesthetics, And The Quest For An Ontology Of Social Existence In Watsuji Tetsurō’S Rinrigaku, James Mark Shields

Faculty Journal Articles

This paper provides an analysis of the key term aidagara (“betweenness”) in the philosophical ethics of Watsuji Tetsurō (1889-1960), in response to and in light of the recent movement in Japanese Buddhist studies known as “Critical Buddhism.” The Critical Buddhist call for a turn away from “topical” or intuitionist thinking and towards (properly Buddhist) “critical” thinking, while problematic in its bipolarity, raises the important issue of the place of “reason” versus “intuition” in Japanese Buddhist ethics. In this paper, a comparison of Watsuji’s “ontological quest” with that of Martin Heidegger (1889-1976), Watsuji’s primary Western source and foil, is followed by …

Belief-Free Equilibria In Games With Incomplete Information: Characterization And Existence, Johannes Hörner, Stefano Lovo, Tristan Tomala Nov 2009

Belief-Free Equilibria In Games With Incomplete Information: Characterization And Existence, Johannes Hörner, Stefano Lovo, Tristan Tomala

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

We characterize belief-free equilibria in infinitely repeated games with incomplete information with N > 2 players and arbitrary information structures. This characterization involves a new type of individual rational constraint linking the lowest equilibrium payoffs across players. The characterization is tight: we define a set of payoffs that contains all the belief-free equilibrium payoffs; conversely, any point in the interior of this set is a belief-free equilibrium payoff vector when players are sufficiently patient. Further, we provide necessary conditions and sufficient conditions on the information structure for this set to be non-empty, both for the case of known-own payoffs, and for …

Characteristics Of An Interpreted Situation With Multiple: Implications For Pedagogy, Masato Takimoto Nov 2009

Characteristics Of An Interpreted Situation With Multiple: Implications For Pedagogy, Masato Takimoto

International Journal of Interpreter Education

By examining a naturalistic interpreted situation with a number of participants, this paper identifies and considers the distinctiveness of such a context. With an increased number of participants, the interaction becomes highly complex, and an interpreter is required to undertake functions that may be considered additional to or different from an interpreter-mediated interaction with two primary interlocutors. Such additional tasks consist of the management of information, including reporting and summarizing, and monitoring the participants’ information needs. In order to analyze the complex nature of the interaction, the notion of footing is employed as a theoretical framework. These findings have important …

Sign Language Interpreting: A Human Rights Issue, Hilde Haualand Nov 2009

Sign Language Interpreting: A Human Rights Issue, Hilde Haualand

International Journal of Interpreter Education

Viewed as isolated cases, sign language interpreters facilitate communication between 1 or more people. Viewed broadly, sign language interpreting may be seen as a tool to secure the human rights of sign language using deaf people. To fulfill this goal, interpreters must be provided with proper training and work according to a code of ethics. A recent international survey of 93 countries, mostly in the developing world (H. Haualand & C. Allen, 2009), found that very few respondents had an established sign language interpreter service, formal education and training opportunities for interpreters, or an endorsed code of ethics to regulate …

Copyright Consultations Submission, Entertainment Software Association Of Canada, Jason J. Kee

Osgoode Hall Review of Law and Policy

The entertainment software industry is one of the fastest growing market segment in the global economy, with Canada rapidly establishing itself as a world leader in the multi-billion dollar global video game industry. The employment opportunities in this industry, as well as its investments in research and technology are also significant. These investments are not without risk – in the highly competitive industry of video game production the chance of a video game being a commercial failure outweighs the chances of its success. Internet piracy of video game software has also undergone explosive growth and represents a significant problem for …

Biased Social Learning, Helios Herrera, Johannes Hörner Nov 2009

Biased Social Learning, Helios Herrera, Johannes Hörner

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

This paper examines social learning when only one of the two types of decisions is observable. Because agents arrive randomly over time, and only those who invest are observed, later agents face a more complicated inference problem than in the standard model, as the absence of investment might reflect either a choice not to invest, or a lack of arrivals. We show that, as in the standard model, learning is complete if and only if signals are unbounded. If signals are bounded, cascades may occur, and whether they are more or less likely than in the standard model depends on …

Investigation Of The Physical And Electronic Properties Of Indium Doped Zinc Oxide Nanofibers Synthesized By Electrospinning, A. F. Lotus, Y. C. Kang, R. D. Ramsier, George G. Chase

Chemical, Biomolecular, and Corrosion Engineering Faculty Research

Nanostructured metal oxides and particularly nanofiber based materials can provide significant advances for the miniaturization of electronic, optoelectronic, photonic, sensor, and energy conversion devices with enhanced performance based on their unique material properties. In this study, indium doped zinc oxide (IZO) nanofibers were synthesized by electrospinning. These nanofibers have diameters in the range 50-100 nm. The effects of indium addition on the structural, optical, and electrical properties of the zinc oxide nanofiber matrices were investigated. The IZO nanofibers undergo significant changes in their optical and electrical properties compared to undoped zinc oxide nanofibers.
