Signs Of Access In A Digital World: Online Delivery Of Deaf Studies Curricula In Ireland At Third Level,, Brian Nolan, Lorraine Leeson

Conference Papers

Irish Sign Language (ISL), an indigenous language of Ireland, is recognized by the European Union as a natural language. It is a language separate from the other languages used in Ireland, including English, Irish, and, in Northern Ireland, British Sign Language. Some 5,000 Deaf people use ISL. Given the history of suppression of signed languages across the EU, the average Deaf person leaves school with a reading age of 8.5 to 9 years. Given this, it is no surprise that Deaf people are the most under-represented of all disadvantaged groups at third level. This poses two challenges: (1) getting Deaf …

Latter-Day Saint Children And Youth In America, David C. Dollahite Jan 2009

Latter-Day Saint Children And Youth In America, David C. Dollahite

Faculty Publications

Some of the concepts of the view of the childhood held by the Latter-day Saints can be found in stories told about the early life of their founder and first prophet, Joseph Smith. Brother Joseph, as he was known to the Saints, often took time to play games with children and youth. Some Mormons, with their early American sense of propriety about religious leaders, were troubled by Joseph's playful nature. One day a Brother Wakefield came to the Prophet's home to discuss church business. He was told that Brother Joseph was translating the word of God. Brother Wakefield waited some …

Identity Management To Support Access Control In E-Health Systems, Xu Chen, Damon Berry, William Grimson Jan 2009

Identity Management To Support Access Control In E-Health Systems, Xu Chen, Damon Berry, William Grimson

Reflections Of A Layman On The Ryan Report, Eamon Maher Jan 2009

Reflections Of A Layman On The Ryan Report, Eamon Maher

Books/Chapters

The Ryan Report on abuse of children in institutions of the state which were run by religious orders caused outrage and confusion among all the people of Ireland, both members of the Catholic Church and others. In the aftermath of the immediate shock and the widespread media coverage, it seems useful to reflect on the roots of the problems that gave rise to these horrors and to try to set out a way forward which might help to avoid such things happening in the future. Tony Flannery set about seeking views, comments and analysis which might add some breadth and …

Enabling Adaptation In Trust Computations, Luca Longo, Pierpaolo Dondio, Bresciani Riccardo, Andrew Butterfield, Stephen Barrett

Conference papers

Digital systems have been rapidly evolving within highly dynamic and unstructured environments, where the lack of a central authority forces entities to interact with each other through collaboration and negotiation. Digital agents often use Trust models in order to compute the level of trustworthiness of the partner they want to collaborate with. Unfortunately, due to the evolution speed of open and collaborative environments, the trustworthiness of an agent varies over time, and as a result, Trust models must be continuously adapted to the changing context. In this work we address the problem by presenting a self-adaptive model for Trust computations. …

Detecting Coached Underreporting On The Mmpi-2 And Mmpi-2-Rf, Elizabeth M. Bolinger Jan 2009

Detecting Coached Underreporting On The Mmpi-2 And Mmpi-2-Rf, Elizabeth M. Bolinger

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Early analyses performed by the authors of the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-2 Restructured Form (MMPI-2-RF) and others (Ben-Porath & Tellegen, 2008; Sellbom & Bagby, 2008) have shown promise in detecting faking good profiles. Two validity scales designed to detect underreporting and defensiveness on the MMPI-2-RF are the L-r (a measure of underreporting by claiming unlikely moral virtues) and the K-r (a measure of underreporting by claiming good psychological adjustment) scales (Wygant, Ben-Porath, & Tellegen, 2007). These early studies have found very similar results and patterns as observed in studies of underreporting with the MMPI-2. This study attempts to add to …

Does A Sense Of Control Moderate Self-Regulation Strategies And Performance? When Feedback Lingers, Annette Feravich

Wayne State University Dissertations

ABSTRACT

This study examined whether a sense of control moderated the relationship between self-regulation and performance on an anagram task. High school students agreeing to participate in this study completed the Behavioral Inhibition/Behavioral Approach Scale (BIS/BAS) in order to determine individual promotion or prevention chronic self-regulatory strategies, as well as the revised Children's Attributional Style Questionnaire (CASQ-R) to determine a sense of control based on explanatory style. Changes in mood and performance on anagram tasks were measured at three different times during the study: prior to, after, and after discrediting randomly assigned negative or positive feedback. Performance tasks were designed …

Earth's Heat Source -- The Sun, Oliver Manuel Jan 2009

Earth's Heat Source -- The Sun, Oliver Manuel

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

The Sun encompasses planet Earth, supplies the heat that warms it, and even shakes it. The United Nation's Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) assumed that solar influence on Earth's climate is limited to changes in solar irradiance and adopted the consensus opinion of a hydrogen-filled Sun - the Standard Solar Model (SSM). They did not consider the alternative solar model and instead adopted another consensus opinion: Anthropogenic greenhouse gases play a dominant role in climate change. The SSM fails to explain the solar wind, solar cycles, and the empirical link of solar surface activity with Earth's changing climate. The …

The Role Of Hypochlorous Acid As One Of The Reactive Oxygen Species In Periodontal Disease, Chong-Hou Sam, Hsein-Kun Lu Jan 2009

The Role Of Hypochlorous Acid As One Of The Reactive Oxygen Species In Periodontal Disease, Chong-Hou Sam, Hsein-Kun Lu

Journal of Dental Sciences

Hypochlorous acid (HOCl) has both proinflammatory and anti-inflammatory properties, and seems to play an important role in the immune system. The regulation of normal flora contributes to periodontal health, and HOCl seems to have the ability to attack Gram-negative pathogens during periodontitis. Furthermore, high concentrations of HOCl promote healing by regulating cytokines and growth factors, killing pathogens through chlorination or oxidation, and modulating inflammation through the effects on nuclear factor κB and activator protein-1 of monocytes. After chlorination of taurine by HOCl, taurine chloramine is mostly an anti-inflammatory agent and enhances healing. Neither HOCl nor taurine chloramine are common in …

The purpose of this study was to evaluate and improve post-orthognathic surgery image predictions. Materials and methods In this retrospective study, 30 bimaxillary protrusion patients who underwent two jaw surgeries were recruited. Simulations were compared with the actual postsurgical …

Seven-Level Shunt Active Power Filter For High-Power Drive Systems, Peng Xiao, Ganesh K. Venayagamoorthy, Keith Corzine Jan 2009

Seven-Level Shunt Active Power Filter For High-Power Drive Systems, Peng Xiao, Ganesh K. Venayagamoorthy, Keith Corzine

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In high-power adjustable-speed motor drives, such as those used in electric ship propulsion systems, active filters provide a viable solution to mitigating harmonic related issues caused by diode or thyristor rectifier front-ends. To handle the large compensation currents and provide better thermal management, two or more paralleled semiconductor switching devices can be used. In this paper, a novel topology is proposed where two active filter inverters are connected with tapped reactors to share the compensation currents. The proposed active filter topology can also produce seven voltage levels, which significantly reduces the switching current ripple and the size of passive components. …

Grounding Terrorism on Ground Zero: How 9/11 Informs U.S. Press Coverage of Political Violence by Kevin Mack

This study analyzes the breaking news coverage of the United States press during the November 2008 Mumbai terrorist attacks. Previously, scholars such as Robert Entman and Elisabeth Anker found that U.S. media melodramatically framed the September 11, 2001 attacks and constructed a “War on Terror” ideology. Working from that theoretical perspective, the author posits this ideology influenced U.S. reporters and their style of reportage about the Mumbai attacks, as did breaking news characteristics and general patterns within journalism, …

Distributed Utility-Based Rate Adaptation Protocols For Prioritized, Quasi-Elastic Flows, Sharanya Eswaran, Matthew P. Johnson, Archan Misra, Thomas La Porta

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

This paper considers rate adaptation for streaming multimedia data in a wireless sensor network (WSN) consisting of multiple missions, where each mission subscribes to data streams from multiple sensors, and each sensor's data is utilized by multiple heterogenous missions. We specifically consider the application of the distributed network utility maximization (NUM) framework to a previously unconsidered scenario where the different missions have different priorities, as well as minimum utility demands. When all the utility demands are feasible, we first show that the addition of a penalty for failing to reach the minimum utility demand to the base NUM protocol leads …

Structural Basis For Binding Specificity Between Subclasses Of Modular Polyketide Synthase Docking Domains, Tonia Buchholz, Todd W. Geders, Frank E. Bartley Iii, Kevin A. Reynolds, Janet L. Smith, David H. Sherman

Chemistry Faculty Publications and Presentations

Bacterial type I polyketide synthases (PKSs) assemble structurally diverse natural products of significant clinical value from simple metabolic building blocks. The synthesis of these compounds occurs in a processive fashion along a large multiprotein complex. Transfer of the acyl intermediate across interpolypeptide junctions is mediated, at least in large part, by N- and C-terminal docking domains. We report here a comprehensive analysis of the binding affinity and selectivity for the complete set of discrete docking domain pairs in the pikromycin and erythromycin PKS systems. Despite disconnection from their parent module, each cognate pair of docking domains retained exquisite binding selectivity. …

A compact, low-cost atmospheric pressure, chemical ionization mass spectrometer ('mini-CIMS') has been developed for continuous underway shipboard measurements of dimethylsulfide (DMS) in seawater. The instrument was used to analyze DMS in air equilibrated with flowing seawater across a porous Teflon membrane equilibrator. The equilibrated gas stream was diluted with air containing an isotopically-labeled internal standard. DMS is ionized at atmospheric pressure via proton transfer from water vapor, then declustered, mass filtered via quadrupole mass spectrometry, and detected with an electron multiplier. The instrument described here is based on a low-cost residual gas analyzer (Stanford Research Systems), which has been modified …

Efficacy Of A Behavioral Intervention To Decrease Medication Transcription Errors Among Professional Nurses, Kathleen Ann Becker Jan 2009

Efficacy Of A Behavioral Intervention To Decrease Medication Transcription Errors Among Professional Nurses, Kathleen Ann Becker

Dissertations (1934 -)

The purpose of this study, guided by Donabedian's structure-process-outcome model, was to evaluate if a cognitive-behavioral education intervention would decrease medication transcription errors among professional nurses when admitting patients 65 years of age or older on 5 or more prescribed medications to a hospital. The conceptual framework for this study is derived from Donabedian's structure-process-outcome health model. The premise suggests improving the structure or process of a system can improve health outcomes. My intervention (cognitive behavioral education), specifically influences the process of medication history obtainment which improved medication error score. In this study, a randomized intervention design was used where …

Understanding Relationships In Health Related Quality Of Life For Parents Of Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Norah Louise Johnson Jan 2009

Understanding Relationships In Health Related Quality Of Life For Parents Of Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Norah Louise Johnson

Dissertations (1934 -)

Nurses encounter many parents of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Both parents are under stress that ultimately impacts their health related quality of life (HRQL). Few studies assess the mediators of parenting stress on HRQL for both parents. This study explored the relationship of parenting stress, family functioning and HRQL for parenting dyads of children with ASD. Lazarus and Folkman's (1984) Transactional Model of Stress and Coping and Lakey and Cohen's (2000) Social Support Theory framed the study.

Implementing a cross sectional, descriptive design, 387 parents (n=64 dyads) of ASD-affected children, from 46 states, completed web-based surveys. Demographics, the …

Surviving On Remand: A Study Of How Young People Cope In Remand Custody In Ireland, Sinead Freeman Jan 2009

Surviving On Remand: A Study Of How Young People Cope In Remand Custody In Ireland, Sinead Freeman

Doctoral

The fusion of young people to the prison setting has been described as a toxic combination. This is especially pertinent when applied to youth in remand custody. Previous research studies have identified young people on remand as a highly vulnerable prison population and custodial remand to be a particularly stressful prison experience. Despite this, little research to date has examined how young people cope while remanded in custody. This thesis addresses this gap by providing an insight into the issue of coping on remand through the voices of young people in custody in the Irish context. It is informed by …

A Photochemically Initiated Chemistry For Coupling Underivatized Carbohydrates To Gold Nanoparticles, Xin Wang, Olof Ramström, Mingdi Yan Jan 2009

A Photochemically Initiated Chemistry For Coupling Underivatized Carbohydrates To Gold Nanoparticles, Xin Wang, Olof Ramström, Mingdi Yan

Chemistry Faculty Publications and Presentations

The sensitive optoelectronic properties of metal nanoparticles make nanoparticle-based materials a powerful tool to study fundamental biorecognition processes. Here we present a new and versatile method for coupling underivatized carbohydrates to gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) via the photochemically induced reaction of perfluorophenylazide (PFPA). A one-pot procedure was developed where Au NPs were synthesized and functionalized with PFPA by a ligand-exchange reaction. Carbohydrates were subsequently immobilized on the NPs by a fast light activation. The coupling reaction was efficient, resulting in high coupling yield as well as high ligand surface coverage. A colorimetric system based on the carbohydrate-modified Au NPs was …

Evaluating Ground Truth For Adress As A Preprocess For Automatic Musical Instrument Identification, Joseph Mckay, Mikel Gainza, Dan Barry Jan 2009

Evaluating Ground Truth For Adress As A Preprocess For Automatic Musical Instrument Identification, Joseph Mckay, Mikel Gainza, Dan Barry

Conference papers

Most research in musical instrument identification has focused on labeling isolated samples or solo phrases. A robust instrument identification system capable of dealing with polytimbral recordings of instruments remains a necessity in music information retrieval. Experiments are described which evaluate the ground truth of ADRess as a sound source separation technique used as a preprocess to automatic musical instrument identification. The ground truth experiments are based on a number of basic acoustic features, while using a Gaussian Mixture Model as the classification algorithm. Using all 44 acoustic feature dimensions, successful identification rates are achieved.

Bank Ownership And Management Structure Affects On Principal-Agent Costs And Returning Capital, Joel Wicks, '09 Jan 2009

Bank Ownership And Management Structure Affects On Principal-Agent Costs And Returning Capital, Joel Wicks, '09

Honors Projects

This paper attempts to add to existing research on corporate payout by focusing on the role that the principal-agent problem plays on dividend policies of public and private banks. The results indicate that private banks are better able to monitor mangers use of excessive free cash flow and retaining earnings and will be more willing to let retained earnings build up without returning them to owners in the form of dividends or stock repurchases.
