Teacher Education For Undergraduates, Alicia Leger
Teacher Education For Undergraduates, Alicia Leger
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
This is a capstone research project to assess the effectiveness of a bachelor's degree in the Social and Behavioral Sciences (SBS) in preparing the undergraduate student to become an elementary school teacher. I will be assessing the course pathways in comparison to scholarly research in the field of teacher preparation education. I will be using both Grounded Theory, an inductive theory composed from a wide selection of data, and Bloom's Taxonomy of Learning to review the literature. The methodology I will be using is a composition of research and creation of curriculum. This is geared toward answering my research question …

Bibliometric Analyses Of Biomedical Research Outputs In Lebanon And The United Arab Emirates 1988-2007, Nisrine Bissar-Tadmouri, Ghazi O. Tadmouri
Saudi Medical Journal
OBJECTIVE: We assessed the role of bibliometric methods in representing quantitative and qualitative differences in biomedical research outputs in Lebanon and the United Arab Emirates UAE. METHODS: Data on biomedical research productivity for years 1988-2007 were obtained from PubMed then imported into a specifically designed local database system and normalized to the population size for each country. RESULTS: Data reveal a continuous increase in research production in Lebanon, whereas a plateau phase is observed in the UAE between 1998 and 2007. In Lebanon, most of the citations originated from the capital city of Beirut, mainly the American University of Beirut. …
Effects Of Misassignment On Bias In The Fuzzy Regression Discontinuity, Kelci M. Price
Effects Of Misassignment On Bias In The Fuzzy Regression Discontinuity, Kelci M. Price
Dissertations
The question of whether social interventions are effective has become an ever more important concern as programs are asked to justify their funding and theories of action. Although the randomized control trial (RCT) is a rigorous choice of design with regards to establishing causality, there are many reasons a researcher might want to consider an alternative design. One design which has been shown to provide unbiased estimates of the program effect is the regression discontinuity (RD). However, a major problem encountered when using RD is that participants must be assigned to groups strictly based on a cutoff score - a …

Social Preferences And Moral Biases, Rachel Croson, James Konow
Social Preferences And Moral Biases, Rachel Croson, James Konow
Economics Faculty Works
A consensus seems to be emerging in economics that at least three motives are at work in many strategic decisions: distributive preferences, reciprocal preferences and self-interest. An important obstacle to this research, however, has been moral biases, i.e., the distortions created by self-interest that can obscure our measures of social preferences. Among other things, this has led to disagreement about the relative importance of self-interest, distributive and reciprocal preferences. This paper describes a simple experiment that decomposes behavior into these three forces. We compare the decisions of implicated “stakeholders” with those of impartial “spectators,” who have no stake. Several surprising …

Developing A 'Little Ice Age' Glacial Chronology In The Southern Peruvian Andes Using Lichenometry And Cosmogenic Beryllium-10 Surface Exposure Dating, Jean R. Taggart
Master's Theses and Capstones
The timing and causes of tropical climate changes during the Holocene are important and unresolved issues in paleoclimatology. Glacier chronologies are crucial for discerning the role of the tropics in global climate change, but past glacier activity in this region remains poorly documented. In this study, mapping has identified two prominent glacier advances in three valleys in the Cordillera Vilcabamba (13°20'S). 10Be dating reveals that the most recent glacier culminations occurred during the late AD 1700's to early 1800's, which corresponds to the late 'Little Ice Age' period (LIA; AD 1350--1860). Lichenometric dating suggests near-coeval LIA moraine stabilization in all …

In-Situ Ambient Quantification Of Monoterpenes, Sesquiterpenes And Related Oxygenated Compounds During Bearpex 2007: Implications For Gas-And Particle-Phase Chemistry, Nicole Bouvier-Brown
Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Works
We quantified ambient mixing ratios of 9 monoterpenes, 6 sesquiterpenes, methyl chavicol, the oxygenated terpene linalool, and nopinone using an in-situ gas chromatograph with a quadrupole mass spectrometer (GC-MS). These measurements were a part of the 2007 Biosphere Effects on AeRosols and Photochemistry EXperiment (BEARPEX) at Blodgett Forest, a ponderosa pine forest in the Sierra Nevada Mountains of California. To our knowledge, these observations represent the first direct in-situ ambient quantification of the sesquiterpenes α-bergamotene, longifolene, α-farnesene, and β-farnesene. From average diurnal mixing ratio profiles, we show that α-farnesene emissions are dependent mainly on temperature whereas α-bergamotene and β-farnesene emissions …

This essay continues the line of thought started in a previous article of mine, "The Very Problem of the Problem of God in Zubiri and Unamuno,"in The Xavier Zubiri Review 6 (2004), pp. 73-88. There I argued that true atheism is impossible if Xavier Zubiri and Miguel de Unamuno are correct about the re&son human beings talk about "God" at all.

Regenerative Patterning In Swarm Robots: Mutual Benefits Of Research In Robotics And Stem Cell Biology, Michael Rubenstein, Ying Sai, Cheng-Ming Chuong, Wei-Min Shen

This paper presents a novel perspective of Robotic Stem Cells (RSCs), defined as the basic non-biological elements with stem cell like properties that can self-reorganize to repair damage to their swarming organization. "Self" here means that the elements can autonomously decide and execute their actions without requiring any preset triggers, commands, or help from external sources. We develop this concept for two purposes. One is to develop a new theory for self-organization and self-assembly of multi-robots systems that can detect and recover from unforeseen errors or attacks. This self-healing and self-regeneration is used to minimize the compromise of overall function …

Assessment Of Pelagic Food Webs In Mendums Pond, Nh, Ben Marcek, Jonathan Bunker
Center for Freshwater Biology
This study focused on the relationship between plankton in Mendums Pond, NH. A grazing experiment was conducted to determine the effect of zooplankton on the phytoplankton population. The phytoplankton were largely composed of net plankton (75 %) and this fraction was dominated by cyanobacteria (84.5 %) even though this was a slightly acidic system. Data indicated that the mean body length of zooplankton increased with depth. The average body length of Daphnia ranged from 1.4 mm in the epilimnion to 1.9 mm in the hypolimnion. Copepods followed a similar trend increasing in average body length from 0.85 mm to 0.95 …

A Study Of Selected Errors In Arab Students' English Compositions And An Investigation Of Arabic Rhetoric, Samaa Gamie
Open Access Dissertations
The first half of this dissertation study proposes a revision and rethinking of the traditional methodology used in error studies in composition and presents a new approach to the research on error. The dissertation presents an analysis of the frequency of errors in a sample of 756 Arab student essays of Egyptian, Kuwaiti, Lebanese, and Syrian nationalities. The error study of Arab student writing also analyzes the ways in which these Arab students use the English language to present and affirm their individual, national, cultural, and religious discourses and the manifestations of cultural and ideological resistance in these students' written …

Reconstructing The Responsibility To Protect In The Wake Of Cyclones And Separatism, Jarrod Wong
McGeorge School of Law Scholarly Articles
This Article reconceptualizes the doctrine of the responsibility to protect (R2P). R2P provides that when a government fails to protect its citizens from genocide, war crimes, ethnic cleansing or crimes against humanity (“mass atrocities”), that responsibility shifts to the international community acting through the United Nations.
The U.N.'s apparent failure to include natural disasters in the catalogue of harms potentially justifying R2P intervention generated considerable controversy following Myanmar's refusal of foreign aid following the devastation wrought by Cyclone Nargis. Those seeking to limit the scope of R2P considered it inapplicable in the case of Myanmar, reading the U.N.'s focus on …
Vico And Imagination: An Ingenious Approach To Educating Lawyers With Semiotic Sensibility, Francis J. Mootz Iii
Vico And Imagination: An Ingenious Approach To Educating Lawyers With Semiotic Sensibility, Francis J. Mootz Iii
McGeorge School of Law Scholarly Articles
Law is a specialized semiotic realm, but lawyers generally are ignorant of this fact. Lawyers may manage meaning, but they also are managed by meaning. Seemingly trapped by the weight of pre-existing signs, their attempts to manage these meanings generally are limited to technical interventions and instrumentalist strategies. Signs have power over lawyers because they are embedded in narratives, a semiotic economy that confronts the lawyer as ‘‘given’’ even though it is dynamic and constantly under construction. Most lawyers do not make meaning through legal narratives; rather, they parrot bits of the controlling narratives in response to certain problems. Because …
