The Educational Aspirations/Attainment Gap Among Rural Alaska Native Students, Aaron Doyle Nov 2009

The Educational Aspirations/Attainment Gap Among Rural Alaska Native Students, Aaron Doyle

The Rural Educator

Indigenous students in rural Alaska hold high educational aspirations and yet few students realize their educational goals (Hamilton & Seyfrit, 1993; Kleinfeld & McDiarmid, 1986; McDiarmid & Kleinfeld, 1981). Our purpose in this study was tounderstand why so many Alaska Native students from small, isolated communities “drift” after high school, neither entering the postsecondary programs they aspire to, nor engaging in paid work. The contribution of this study is to clarify the reasons for the “educational aspirations-achievement gap,” in other words, why so many Alaska Native rural students have high educational expectations, and yet remain directionless in adult life. This …

The Perceptions Of Math And Math Education In Midville, Illinois, David M. Lucas, Jamie Fugitt

The Rural Educator

By means of a qualitative research method known as folknography, a concerted effort was made to discern perceptions of math and math education in the rural Midwest. A community that will be referred to as Midville, located in the state of Illinois, was chosen as the target population for this study. The community and surrounding region stands over one hundred miles from the nearest metro complex. The study was conducted in May of 2006. After completion of the initial field work, data were collected, analyzed, and summarized, producing this document.

Workshop To Support Vertical Articulation At Discovery Canyon Campus, Niki Miscovich

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

This project is presented in the form of a PowerPoint, which is designed to guide reading and writing teachers at Discovery Canyon Campus through a work session on curriculum alignment. The researcher reviews research on how vertical articulation and aligned curriculum contributes to higher student achievement as well as strategies for effective professional development sessions for teachers. The project is part of the longer process of developing an aligned curriculum at the researcher's school, which encompasses grades kindergarten through 12. The goal of this second step in the process is to evaluate the current curriculum against state standards so teachers …

Two-Stage Decompositions For The Analysis Of Functional Connectivity For Fmri With Application To Alzheimer's Disease Risk, Brian S. Caffo, Ciprian M. Crainiceanu, Guillermo Verduzco, Stewart H. Mostofsky, Susan Spear-Bassett, James J. Pekar

COBRA Preprint Series

Functional connectivity is the study of correlations in measured neurophysiological signals. Altered functional connectivity has been shown to be associated with numerous diseases including Alzheimer's disease and mild cognitive impairment. In this manuscript we use a two-stage application of the singular value decomposition to obtain data driven population-level measures of functional connectivity in functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). The method is computationally simple and amenable to high dimensional fMRI data with large numbers of subjects. Simulation studies suggest the ability of the decomposition methods to recover population brain networks and their associated loadings. We further demonstrate the utility of these …

The Thermodynamic And Ground State Properties Of The Tip4p Water Octamer, E. Asare, A-R. Musah, E. Curotto, David L. Freeman, J. D. Doll

Chemistry Faculty Publications

Several stochastic simulations of the TIP4P [W. L. Jorgensen, J. Chandrasekhar, J. D. Madura, R. W. Impey, and M. L. Klein, J. Chem. Phys. 79, 926 (1983)] water octamer are performed. Use is made of the stereographic projection path integral and the Green’s function stereographic projection diffusion Monte Carlo techniques, recently developed in one of our groups. The importance sampling for the diffusion Monte Carlo algorithm is obtained by optimizing a simple wave function using variational Monte Carlo enhanced with parallel tempering to overcome quasiergodicity problems. The quantum heat capacity of the TIP4P octamer contains a pronounced melting peak …

Dilute Sulfuric Acid Pretreatment Of Switchgrass In Microwave Reactor For Biofuel Conversion: An Investigation Of Yields, Kinetics,, Oscar Martin Nov 2009

Dilute Sulfuric Acid Pretreatment Of Switchgrass In Microwave Reactor For Biofuel Conversion: An Investigation Of Yields, Kinetics,, Oscar Martin

Theses and Dissertations

Lignocellulosic materials provide a raw material source for biofuel conversion and offer several advantages over fossil fuels- usage of a renewable resource, reduced greenhouse emissions, a decreased dependence on foreign oil, and stimulation of the agricultural sector. However, a primary technological challenge in converting lignocellulosic biomass into fuel is overcoming the recalcitrance of its matrix to enzymatic hydrolysis. To overcome these problems for chemical processing, naturally occurring cellulose biomass must be pretreated before it can be further processed using enzymatic hydrolysis or bioconversion. The goal of this work was to develop a model that predicts the glucose yield (pretreatment and …

An Unstructured Finite Volume Method For Incompressible Flows With Complex Immersed Boundaries, Lin Sun, Sanjay Mathur, Jayathi Y. Murthy Nov 2009

An Unstructured Finite Volume Method For Incompressible Flows With Complex Immersed Boundaries, Lin Sun, Sanjay Mathur, Jayathi Y. Murthy

PRISM: NNSA Center for Prediction of Reliability, Integrity and Survivability of Microsystems

A numerical method is developed for solving the 3D, unsteady, incompressible flows with immersed moving soldis of arbitrary geometrical complexity. A co-located (non-staggered) finite volume method is employed to solve the Navier-Stokes governing equeations for flow region using arbitrary convex polyhedral meshes. The solid region is represented by a set of material points with known position and velocity. Faces in the flow region located in the immediate vicinity of the solid body are marked as immersed boundary (IB) faces. At every instant in time, the influence of the body on the flowis accounted for by reconstructing implicitly the velocity the …

Parameter Estimation For The Lognormal Distribution, Brenda Faith Ginos Nov 2009

Parameter Estimation For The Lognormal Distribution, Brenda Faith Ginos

Theses and Dissertations

The lognormal distribution is useful in modeling continuous random variables which are greater than or equal to zero. Example scenarios in which the lognormal distribution is used include, among many others: in medicine, latent periods of infectious diseases; in environmental science, the distribution of particles, chemicals, and organisms in the environment; in linguistics, the number of letters per word and the number of words per sentence; and in economics, age of marriage, farm size, and income. The lognormal distribution is also useful in modeling data which would be considered normally distributed except for the fact that it may be more …
