Plato On Truth And Falsehood, Anne M. Wiles Nov 2009

Plato On Truth And Falsehood, Anne M. Wiles

The Society for Ancient Greek Philosophy Newsletter

The argument of this paper is that Plato's position on medicinal lies is neither dishonest nor inconsistent. When adequately understood in its context, the account Plato gives of truth and falsehood offers valuable insights into the nature of each and the role both play in the moral life of the individual and the state.

The Impact Of Left Hemisphere Stroke On Force Control With Familiar And Novel Objects: Neuroanatomic Substrates And Relationship To Apraxia, Amanda M. Dawson, Laura J. Buxbaum, Susan V. Duff Nov 2009

The Impact Of Left Hemisphere Stroke On Force Control With Familiar And Novel Objects: Neuroanatomic Substrates And Relationship To Apraxia, Amanda M. Dawson, Laura J. Buxbaum, Susan V. Duff

Physical Therapy Faculty Articles and Research

Fingertip force scaling for lifting objects frequently occurs in anticipation of finger contact. An ongoing question concerns the types of memories that are used to inform predictive control. Object-specific information such as weight may be stored and retrieved when previously encountered objects are lifted again. Alternatively, visual size and shape cues may provide estimates of object density each time objects are encountered. We reasoned that differences in performance with familiar versus novel objects would provide support for the former possibility. Anticipatory force production with both familiar and novel objects was assessed in six left hemisphere stroke patients, two of whom …

Simulations Of The Dipole-Dipole Interaction Between Two Spatially Separated Groups Of Rydberg Atoms, Thomas J. Carroll, Christopher Daniel, Leah Hoover, Timothy Sidie, Michael W. Noel Nov 2009

Simulations Of The Dipole-Dipole Interaction Between Two Spatially Separated Groups Of Rydberg Atoms, Thomas J. Carroll, Christopher Daniel, Leah Hoover, Timothy Sidie, Michael W. Noel

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

The dipole-dipole interaction among ultracold Rydberg atoms is simulated. We examine a general interaction scheme in which two atoms excited to the x and x states are converted to y and y states via a Förster resonance. The atoms are arranged in two spatially separated groups, each consisting of only one species of atom. We monitor the state mixing by recording the fraction of atoms excited to the y state as the distance between the two groups is varied. With zero detuning a many-body effect that relies on always resonant interactions causes the state mixing to have a finite range. …

The Anchor, Volume 123.10: November 25, 2009, Hope College

The Anchor: 2009

The Anchor began in 1887 and was first issued weekly in 1914. Covering national and campus news alike, Hope College’s student-run newspaper has grown over the years to encompass over two-dozen editors, reporters, and staff. For much of The Anchor's history, the latest issue was distributed across campus each Wednesday throughout the academic school year (with few exceptions). In recent years The Anchor moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. The Anchor is now published in print twice per academic semester. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.

Mothers' Perceptions Of Website Information In Solving Behavioral Problems In Children With Disabilities, Heather Collins

Theses and Dissertations

This research investigated the needs of mothers in regard to designing an educational website for parents/caregivers of children with disabilities. This research was designed to provide information to inform outreach efforts of Brigham Young University's Family HOPE (Happiness, Optimism, Promise, and Excellence) Project. This project assists families struggling with child behavior problems. Results from this study provided an initial understanding of the potential for a website to offer support to families not directly served through the Family HOPE project. Participants included 26 adult females, 25 mothers and one female caregiver. Each participant was the primary caregiver of a child with …

We report on a search for the standard-model Higgs boson in pp̄ collisions at s=1.96TeV using an integrated luminosity of 2.0fb-1. We look for production of the Higgs boson decaying to a pair of bottom quarks in association with a vector boson V (W or Z) decaying to quarks, resulting in a four-jet final state. Two of the jets are required to have secondary vertices consistent with B-hadron decays. We set the first 95% confidence level upper limit on the VH production cross section with V(→qq̄/qq′)H(→bb̄) decay for Higgs boson masses of 100-150GeV/c2 using data from run II at the …

The Chemistry Of Lipid Signal Molecules In Insects, Sean M. Putnam Nov 2009

The Chemistry Of Lipid Signal Molecules In Insects, Sean M. Putnam

Department of Entomology: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

I report on the chemical identification of lipid signaling molecules in three species of insects and describe the chemical isolation of a bacterial product that inhibits eicosanoid biosynthesis. Chapter 2 reports that eicosanoids mediate nodulation reactions to bacterial infection in newly-emerged, but not forager honeybees. Cyclooxygenase and lipoxygenase inhibitors attenuate nodulation, which is reversed in the presence of arachidonic acid. Older adult honeybees do not produce bacterial-induced nodules, and they have fewer circulating hemocytes, from which I infer that foraging honeybees express a physiological trade-off between maintaining a biologically expensive hemocytic immune system and flight activity associated with foraging. Chapters …

Crystal Structure Of [Bis(Dimethylformamide) Bis(2,2’-Pyridyl)Quinoline)Iron(Ii)]Bis-(Tetraphenylborate), Iis Siti Jahro, Djulia Onggo, Ismunandar Ismunandar, Susanto Imam Rahayu, Bohari M. Yamin

Makara Journal of Science

The goal of this research is to obtain single crystal and structural information of iron(II) complex with 2,(2’- pyridyl)quinoline(pq) ligands. The reaction of iron(II) salt with 2,(2’-pyridyl)quinoline ligand and sodium tetraphenylborate in the molar ratio of 1:3:2 in methanol-N,N-dimethylformamide(dmf) solution results in an iron(II) complex. The formula of the [Fe(pq)2(dmf)2](BPh4)2 complex has been obtained from the iron(II) and C, H, N contents. Single crystal of [Fe(pq)2(dmf)2](BPh4)2 suitable for X-ray investigation was obtained by evaporation of the complex solution in N,N-dimethylformamide at room temperature after 24 hours. This compound crystallizes in monoclinic system with C2/c space group, a = 27.950(4), b …

Exemplars In Service Design, Johan Blomkvist, Stefan Holmlid Nov 2009

Exemplars In Service Design, Johan Blomkvist, Stefan Holmlid

ServDes Conference Series

Exemplars play an important role in applied service design but are largely overlooked in academic literature. So far; most design research in other fields has concerned how surface properties of exemplars are incorporated in the current design; but services are different from most other design disciplines in regard to material. To expand the understanding of how exemplars matter to service design; material from recordings and observations of design meetings have been analysed. We observed a pattern that exemplars; in this case; were introduced in communication in the format of micro-narratives that express emotional impact of service elements. This study shows …

The Spectroscopic Orbit Of Sao 167450, Visual Companion Of Aa Ceti, Francis C. Fekel, Daryl W. Willmarth Nov 2009

The Spectroscopic Orbit Of Sao 167450, Visual Companion Of Aa Ceti, Francis C. Fekel, Daryl W. Willmarth

Information Systems and Engineering Management Research Publications

We have determined a spectroscopic orbit for SAO 167450, which is the visual secondary of the W UMa-type eclipsing binary AA Cet, and so the system is quadruple. Radial velocities from the coudé feed and 4 m telescopes at Kitt Peak National Observatory produce an orbit with a period of 25.68 days and an eccentricity of 0.50. We classify both the primary and secondary as G0 subgiant/dwarf stars and find that they are somewhat metal rich relative to the Sun. The high lithium abundances of both components argue that the stars are less than 1 Gyr old. If the components …

A Columnist's View Of Capitol Square: Ohio Politics And Government, 1969-2005, Lee Leonard

University of Akron Press Publications

This carefully-selected collection brings together his columns about the major figures, seminal events, and legends from 1969 through 2005. Leonard, the man with no agenda but the truth, covers campaigns and national political conventions, including the famous Democratic primary battles between John Glenn and Howard Metzenbaum in the 1970s. Fully described is the era of the four-term Governor James A. Rhodes, who controlled the Ohio Republican Party for two decades. Among the cast of characters are colorful lobbyist, Tom Dudgeon, who described the legislative process as “The Dance of the Stomping Buzzards,” state Senator Oakley Collins, a southern Ohioan who …

On The Behaviour Of Marginal And Conditional Akaike Information Criteria In Linear Mixed Models, Sonja Greven, Thomas Kneib Nov 2009

On The Behaviour Of Marginal And Conditional Akaike Information Criteria In Linear Mixed Models, Sonja Greven, Thomas Kneib

Johns Hopkins University, Dept. of Biostatistics Working Papers

In linear mixed models, model selection frequently includes the selection of random effects. Two versions of the Akaike information criterion (AIC) have been used, based either on the marginal or on the conditional distribution. We show that the marginal AIC is no longer an asymptotically unbiased estimator of the Akaike information, and in fact favours smaller models without random effects. For the conditional AIC, we show that ignoring estimation uncertainty in the random effects covariance matrix, as is common practice, induces a bias that leads to the selection of any random effect not predicted to be exactly zero. We derive …
