Effectiveness Of Electronic Transfer Device On Passive Tag Readability, Michael Anthony Montero Dec 2009

Effectiveness Of Electronic Transfer Device On Passive Tag Readability, Michael Anthony Montero

Industrial Technology and Packaging

Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) has been around for roughly 40 years, yet the technology has not been widely implemented. Bar codes currently dominate supply chains as the main method for tracking asset, but RFID has the potential to completely remove the need for bar codes. While bar codes need to be individually scanned RFID tagging allows for instantaneous scanning of complete pallet loads. This drastically reduces the amount of time and labor needed to monitor and track assets throughout supply chains. Yet, at this time RFID tagging is unable to be adopted by the majority of manufacturers due to the …

Two Additional Invasive Scarabaeoid Beetles (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae: Dynastinae) In Hawaii, Mary Liz Jameson, Darcy E. Oishi, Brett C. Ratcliffe, Grant T. Mcquate Dec 2009

Two Additional Invasive Scarabaeoid Beetles (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae: Dynastinae) In Hawaii, Mary Liz Jameson, Darcy E. Oishi, Brett C. Ratcliffe, Grant T. Mcquate

University of Nebraska State Museum: Entomology Papers

Two species of dynastine scarab beetles are reported for the first time on the island of Hawaii: the Pasadena masked chafer, Cyclocephala pasadenae (Casey) (Scarabaeidae: Dynastinae: Cyclocephalini) from North America and Temnorhynchus retusus (Fabricius) (Scarabaeidae: Dynastinae: Pentodontini) from Africa. The Pasadena masked chafer is established on the island of Hawaii, is a recognized pest of turf grass, and is a concern for agriculture and native Hawaiian arthropod species. Temnorhynchus retusus is not known to be an agricultural pest, but its spread on the islands could pose a problem for Hawaiian native species. We provide an overview of each species, characteristics …

Partially Coherent Standard And Elegant Laguerre-Gaussian Beams Of All Orders, Fei Wang, Yangjian Cai, Olga Korotkova Dec 2009

Partially Coherent Standard And Elegant Laguerre-Gaussian Beams Of All Orders, Fei Wang, Yangjian Cai, Olga Korotkova

Physics Articles and Papers

Partially coherent standard and elegant Laguerre-Gaussian (LG) beams of all orders are introduced as a natural extension of coherent standard and elegant LG beams to the stochastic domain. By expanding the LG modes into a finite sum of Hermite-Gaussian modes, the analytical formulae are obtained for the cross-spectral densities of partially coherent standard and elegant LG beams in the source plane and after passing through paraxial ABCD optical system, based on the generalized Collins integral formula. A comparative study of the propagation properties of the partially coherent standard and elegant LG beams in free space is carried out via a …

Structural Characterization Of The C-Terminus Of The Cochlear Motor Protein Prestin: Intrinsic Disorder Linked To Voltage Sensor Function, Michael S. Podgorski Dec 2009

Structural Characterization Of The C-Terminus Of The Cochlear Motor Protein Prestin: Intrinsic Disorder Linked To Voltage Sensor Function, Michael S. Podgorski

Theses and Dissertations (ETD)

The sensitivity of mammalian hearing relies upon the ability to amplify sound. Outer hair cells (OHCs) in the cochlea have motile properties that support this function. The motor protein called prestin resides in the lateral wall of the OHCs. Prestin undergoes voltage-dependent conformational changes, which correlates to the movement of charge through the membrane or non-linear capacitance (NLC). This property underlies OHC electromotility. A mechanistic understanding of prestin’s function remains unknown. Previous research has tied prestin’s C-terminus (residues 499-799) to the voltage-dependent events that occur in the membrane. The folding and biochemical properties of prestin’s C-terminus were characterized. This information …

Student Sample Perceptions Of Organic Food Products And Buying Habits, Alycia M. Deus

Agricultural Education and Communication

The purposes of this senior project were to identify college students’ perceptions and knowledge of organic food. This study also focuses on the respondents’ purchasing and budgeting of organic food. This information is essential to inform farmers and ranchers because it serves as an indicator of future market’s demands.

A thirteen item questionnaire was distributed to sixty-five students attending California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, enrolled in either Agricultural Education and Communication courses or Agricultural Business courses. Both upper and lower division classes were surveyed. The questionnaires were distributed and collected from June 2, 2009 to June 4, 2009. …

For The Greater Good: Developing A Visual And Performing Arts Center, William Floyd Childers

Graduate Theses

The process, procedures and issues involved in the development of a visual and performing arts center were examined and explored by a group of graduate students enrolled in the Master of Arts in Arts Administration program at Winthrop University. Using their knowledge gained from their undergraduate studies, personal experiences, research and the graduate program itself, they produced a collective work entitled "Handbook of William's Farm." It is the "heart" of how collaboration can make a vision into reality. This handbook that made William's Farm a reality and the accompanying material can serve as a guide to anyone considering or involved …

The Law Clerk Proxy Wars: Secrecy, Accountability, And Ideology In The Supreme Court, Carolyn Shapiro

All Faculty Scholarship

This piece provides an in-depth review and analysis of two recent books about Supreme Court law clerks, Courtiers of the Marble Palace: The Rise and Influence of the Supreme Court Law Clerk, by Todd C. Peppers, and Sorcerers’ Apprentices: 100 Years of Law Clerks at the United States Supreme Court, by Artemus Ward and David L. Weiden. In addition, the essay addresses a question so obvious that it is rarely asked – why is there so much curiosity about Supreme Court law clerks in the first place? In the essay, I analyze a widespread concern – and one discussed in …

Lucerne Guidelines For Western Australia Principles For Integrating A Perennial Pasture Into Broadacre Dryland Farming Systems, Diana Fedorenko, Perry Dolling, Christopher Loo, Tom Bailey, Roy Latta Dec 2009

Lucerne Guidelines For Western Australia Principles For Integrating A Perennial Pasture Into Broadacre Dryland Farming Systems, Diana Fedorenko, Perry Dolling, Christopher Loo, Tom Bailey, Roy Latta

Bulletins 4000 -

Lucerne, often regarded as the queen of forages, has been used in agriculture for centuries. In Western Australia, however, its potential has never been fully realised despite its well-documented ability to dewater soils and reduce groundwater recharge. Over the years adoption has been limited by a range of factors including pests and diseases, soil acidity, grazing management and economics. During the last decade research has addressed these issues, paving the way for much greater impact at the farm and catchment level.

Global Climate Policy Architecture And Political Feasibility: Specific Formulas And Emission Targets To Attain 460 Ppm Co2 Concentrations, Valentina Bosetti, Jeffrey Frankel Dec 2009

Global Climate Policy Architecture And Political Feasibility: Specific Formulas And Emission Targets To Attain 460 Ppm Co2 Concentrations, Valentina Bosetti, Jeffrey Frankel

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

Three gaps in the Kyoto Protocol most badly need to be filled: the absence of emission targets extending far into the future, the absence of participation by the United States, China, and other developing countries, and the absence of reason to think that members will abide by commitments. To be politically acceptable, any new treaty that fills these gaps must, we believe, obey certain constraints regarding country-by-country economic costs. We offer a framework of formulas that assign quantitative allocations of emissions, across countries, one budget period at a time. The two-part plan: (i) China and other developing countries accept targets …

Gender Differences In Output Quality And Quantity Under Competition And Time Constraints: Evidence From A Pilot Study, Olga Shurchkov Dec 2009

Gender Differences In Output Quality And Quantity Under Competition And Time Constraints: Evidence From A Pilot Study, Olga Shurchkov

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

Gender gaps in income and level of position in the workplace are widespread. One explanation for this inequality is that the genders perform differently under competitive conditions, as previous experimental studies have found a significant gender gap in competitive tasks that are perceived to favor men. In this paper, we use a verbal task that is perceived to favor women and find no gender difference under competition per se. We also reject the hypothesis that a .stereotype threat. explains the inability of women to improve performance under competition. We propose an alternative explanation for gender inequality: namely, that women and …

On The Legitimacy Of Coercion For The Financing Of Public Goods, Felix Bierbrauer Dec 2009

On The Legitimacy Of Coercion For The Financing Of Public Goods, Felix Bierbrauer

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

The literature on public goods has shown that efficient outcomes are impossible if participation constraints have to be respected. This paper addresses the question whether they should be imposed. It asks under what conditions efficiency considerations justify that individuals are forced to pay for public goods that they do not value. It is shown that participation constraints are desirable if public goods are provided by a malevolent Leviathan. By contrast, with a Pigouvian planner, efficiency can be achieved. Finally, the paper studies the delegation of public goods provision to a profit-maximizing firm. This also makes participation constraints desirable.

Asian Maths Whizz And Talkative Females: How Stereotypes Can Actually Boost Performance, Knowledge@Smu Dec 2009

Asian Maths Whizz And Talkative Females: How Stereotypes Can Actually Boost Performance, Knowledge@Smu

Knowledge@SMU

Nobody likes to be pigeonholed or reduced to a single stereotype. One reason could be because we believe ourselves to be products of multiple stereotypes: a combination of identities, such as "Asian", "female", "lawyer", "Gen X", "Christian", "Chinese", etc. While these labels connect us to like-individuals, they can also carry all sorts of connotations and expectations – positive, neutral and negative. For example, an Asian might be expected to outperform a non-Asian at mathematics because of stereotypes that Asians are mathematically inclined. Will such undue expectations affect the Asian's performance outcome? Research studies point to a 'Yes'.
