An Analysis Of Information Systems Security Management (Issm): The Hierarchical Organizations Vs. Emergent Organization, A.A. Norman, N.M. Yasin

Research Publications (2006 to 2010)

The adoption of Information Systems (IS) in many businesses is at a fast tempo in order to be more competitive. This fast adoption is very much supported by the rapid technology advancement and the increasing demand from business stakeholders. Together with the introduction of the Internet with its remarkable features, plus the free-form of policing practiced make the Internet more attractive and engaging. The only problem is this attraction has become the magnet for the abuser to misuse the Internet for their profit. This problem has led to many Information Security study to combat threats and protect the business. However, …

An Experimental Study Of Differences In Reading Photo Books By Presentation Media: Print Vs. Screen, Ya-Fang Tsai Nov 2009

An Experimental Study Of Differences In Reading Photo Books By Presentation Media: Print Vs. Screen, Ya-Fang Tsai

Theses

As photography technology changes, the penetration of digital cameras is increasing, especially among young users. Compared to conventional camera users who print most of their images, digital camera users print about one-third of their digital images (PMA, 2009b, p. 10). Moreover, only 5 percent of camera phone users make photo prints (Henning, 2008, p. 4). One popular photo-finishing product is the photo book. The objective of this research was to determine whether people interacted differently with photographic content presented in print versus on screen. This research was focused on: 1. Time spent interacting with photo books. 2. Differences of recall …

Pre-Closing Liability, Omri Ben-Shahar Nov 2009

Pre-Closing Liability, Omri Ben-Shahar

Coase-Sandor Institute for Law & Economics Research Paper Series

Two years after Penzoil v. Texaco threatened to burst the seam of contract formation and find binding commitments before negotiations ended, Judge Easterbrook stitched the rupture. His landmark decision in Empro v. Ball Co. held that a letter-of-intent, which is subject to the preparation of a more comprehensive formal document, is not binding. Each party can freely walk away from it prior to the closing, without incurring any liability and without the court scrutinizing the reasons for the negotiations breakdown. Many courts have since cited and followed Judge Easterbrook's approach. In this commentary, I argue that that this freedom to …

Enhancing Dynamics Courses With Model Eliciting Activities, Lawrence H. Fong Nov 2009

Enhancing Dynamics Courses With Model Eliciting Activities, Lawrence H. Fong

Master's Theses

Model eliciting activities are assignments which require students to develop models to describe realistic situations. Every MEA follows six principles: model-construction, reality, self-assessment, model documentation, generalizability, and effective prototype. The six principles provide a solid guideline in which instructors can develop more MEAs, which can then be shared and used among several participating universities. Under NSF CCLI Grant #0717595, Cal Poly is currently developing Model Eliciting Activities for the subject of Mechanical Engineering.

This report documents the undertakings to implement and enhance two Model Eliciting Activities (MEAs) into the Cal Poly curriculum. Specifically, the development of the Vehicle Accident Reconstruction …

The Art Of Aidagara: Ethics, Aesthetics, And The Quest For An Ontology Of Social Existence In Watsuji Tetsurō’S Rinrigaku, James Mark Shields Nov 2009

The Art Of Aidagara: Ethics, Aesthetics, And The Quest For An Ontology Of Social Existence In Watsuji Tetsurō’S Rinrigaku, James Mark Shields

Faculty Journal Articles

This paper provides an analysis of the key term aidagara (“betweenness”) in the philosophical ethics of Watsuji Tetsurō (1889-1960), in response to and in light of the recent movement in Japanese Buddhist studies known as “Critical Buddhism.” The Critical Buddhist call for a turn away from “topical” or intuitionist thinking and towards (properly Buddhist) “critical” thinking, while problematic in its bipolarity, raises the important issue of the place of “reason” versus “intuition” in Japanese Buddhist ethics. In this paper, a comparison of Watsuji’s “ontological quest” with that of Martin Heidegger (1889-1976), Watsuji’s primary Western source and foil, is followed by …

Composing In A Global-Local Context : Careers, Mobility, Skills., Min-Zhan Lu, Bruce Horner

Faculty and Staff Scholarship

When composition students look to their teachers for vocational guidance, both groups should acknowledge that the contexts of such terms as career, mobility, and skills have radically changed. In particular, the economy now links the global with the local, and capitalism has shifted from the fordist model, dominant through much of the twentieth century, to a newer, “fast” model.

Personality Scale Validities Increase Throughout Medical School, Filip Lievens, Deniz S. Ones, Stephan Dilchert Nov 2009

Personality Scale Validities Increase Throughout Medical School, Filip Lievens, Deniz S. Ones, Stephan Dilchert

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Admissions and personnel decisions rely on stable predictor-criterion relationships. The authors studied the validity of Big Five personality factors and their facets for predicting academic performance in medical school across multiple years, investigating whether criterion-related validities change over time. In this longitudinal investigation, an entire European country's 1997 cohort of medical students was studied throughout their medical school career (Year 1, N = 627; Year 7, N = 306). Over time, extraversion, openness, and conscientiousness factor and facet scale scores showed increases in operational validity for predicting grade point averages. Although there may not be any advantages to being open …

Structural And Electrochemical Properties Of Zno Coated Linivo[4] For Lithium Ion Batteries / Rajammal Karuppiah, Rajammal Karuppiah

Student Works (2000-2009)

Present work has been carried out to synthesize inverse spinel lithium nickel vanadium oxide (LiNiVO4) by the solution evaporation method and polymer modified solution evaporation method. Chitosan was chosen as polymer candidate in this work to prepare the product. Product obtained by these two methods were structurally characterized by XRD, SEM and TEM and followed by electrochemical performance by cyclic voltammetry and charge-discharge characteristics. Both methods successfully produced LiNiVO4 as confirmed using JCPDS data 73-1636. NiO impurity was present at sintering temperatures of 500 °C and 600 °C in both synthesis processes. However no impurities were found at sintering temperatures …

Regulatory Exposure Of Deceptive Marketing And Its Impact On Firm Value, Martha Myslinski Tipton, Sundar G. Bharadwaj, Diana C. Robertson Nov 2009

Regulatory Exposure Of Deceptive Marketing And Its Impact On Firm Value, Martha Myslinski Tipton, Sundar G. Bharadwaj, Diana C. Robertson

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Research linking marketing to financial performance has predominantly focused on how marketing assets and actions add value. The authors argue that it is equally important to understand how marketing decisions can reduce firm value. Prior research has indicated that negative events vary greatly in their indirect costs to the firm. On the basis of established theory and in-depth interviews with practitioners, the authors identify a set of factors that can explain the heterogeneity in the magnitude of indirect costs associated with negative marketing-related events. Specifically, they address how the regulatory exposure of deceptive marketing, which carries no direct cost to …

Belief-Free Equilibria In Games With Incomplete Information: Characterization And Existence, Johannes Hörner, Stefano Lovo, Tristan Tomala Nov 2009

Belief-Free Equilibria In Games With Incomplete Information: Characterization And Existence, Johannes Hörner, Stefano Lovo, Tristan Tomala

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

We characterize belief-free equilibria in infinitely repeated games with incomplete information with N > 2 players and arbitrary information structures. This characterization involves a new type of individual rational constraint linking the lowest equilibrium payoffs across players. The characterization is tight: we define a set of payoffs that contains all the belief-free equilibrium payoffs; conversely, any point in the interior of this set is a belief-free equilibrium payoff vector when players are sufficiently patient. Further, we provide necessary conditions and sufficient conditions on the information structure for this set to be non-empty, both for the case of known-own payoffs, and for …

Dysfunctional Attitudes Scale Perfectionism: A Predictor And Partial Mediator Of Acute Treatment Outcome Among Clinically Depressed Adolescents., Rachel H. Jacobs, Susan G. Silva, Mark A. Reinecke, John F. Curry, Golda S. Ginsburg, Christopher J. Kratochvil, John S. March Nov 2009

Dysfunctional Attitudes Scale Perfectionism: A Predictor And Partial Mediator Of Acute Treatment Outcome Among Clinically Depressed Adolescents., Rachel H. Jacobs, Susan G. Silva, Mark A. Reinecke, John F. Curry, Golda S. Ginsburg, Christopher J. Kratochvil, John S. March

Journal Articles: Psychiatry

The effect of perfectionism on acute treatment outcomes was explored in a randomized controlled trial of 439 clinically depressed adolescents (12-17 years of age) enrolled in the Treatment for Adolescents with Depression Study (TADS) who received cognitive behavior therapy (CBT), fluoxetine, a combination of CBT and FLX, or pill placebo. Measures included the Children's Depression Rating Scale-Revised, the Suicidal Ideation Questionnaire-Grades 7-9, and the perfectionism subscale from the Dysfunctional Attitudes Scale (DAS). Predictor results indicate that adolescents with higher versus lower DAS perfectionism scores at baseline, regardless of treatment, continued to demonstrate elevated depression scores across the acute treatment period. …

An Exploratory Analysis Of The Impact Of Family Functioning On Treatment For Depression In Adolescents., Norah C. Feeny, Susan G. Silva, Mark A. Reinecke, Steven Mcnulty, Robert L. Findling, Paul Rohde, John F. Curry, Golda S. Ginsburg, Christopher J. Kratochvil, Sanjeev M. Pathak, Diane E. May, Betsy D. Kennard, Anne D. Simons, Karen C. Wells, Michele Robins, David Rosenberg, John S. March

Journal Articles: Psychiatry

This article explores aspects of family environment and parent-child conflict that may predict or moderate response to acute treatments among depressed adolescents (N = 439) randomly assigned to fluoxetine, cognitive behavioral therapy, their combination, or placebo. Outcomes were Week 12 scores on measures of depression and global impairment. Of 20 candidate variables, one predictor emerged: Across treatments, adolescents with mothers who reported less parent-child conflict were more likely to benefit than their counterparts. When family functioning moderated outcome, adolescents who endorsed more negative environments were more likely to benefit from fluoxetine. Similarly, when moderating effects were seen on cognitive behavioral …

Characteristics Of An Interpreted Situation With Multiple: Implications For Pedagogy, Masato Takimoto Nov 2009

Characteristics Of An Interpreted Situation With Multiple: Implications For Pedagogy, Masato Takimoto

International Journal of Interpreter Education

By examining a naturalistic interpreted situation with a number of participants, this paper identifies and considers the distinctiveness of such a context. With an increased number of participants, the interaction becomes highly complex, and an interpreter is required to undertake functions that may be considered additional to or different from an interpreter-mediated interaction with two primary interlocutors. Such additional tasks consist of the management of information, including reporting and summarizing, and monitoring the participants’ information needs. In order to analyze the complex nature of the interaction, the notion of footing is employed as a theoretical framework. These findings have important …

Sign Language Interpreting: A Human Rights Issue, Hilde Haualand Nov 2009

Sign Language Interpreting: A Human Rights Issue, Hilde Haualand

International Journal of Interpreter Education

Viewed as isolated cases, sign language interpreters facilitate communication between 1 or more people. Viewed broadly, sign language interpreting may be seen as a tool to secure the human rights of sign language using deaf people. To fulfill this goal, interpreters must be provided with proper training and work according to a code of ethics. A recent international survey of 93 countries, mostly in the developing world (H. Haualand & C. Allen, 2009), found that very few respondents had an established sign language interpreter service, formal education and training opportunities for interpreters, or an endorsed code of ethics to regulate …

This open forum article consists of an interview with Risa Shaw, a signed language interpreter educator, in which she reviews her doctoral research. Her study examined narratives and retellings, in both English and American Sign Language, of disclosures to family members of sexual assault. The findings reveal the importance of context in creating meaning and in shaping narrative structure in discourse. In addition, the work highlights the manner in which interpreters must prepare for the work in order to effectively interpret in the diverse settings where narratives are retold. This interdisciplinary study has implications for interpreters and interpreter educators, across …
