From Corporate Social Responsibility To Corporate Responsible Behaviour: A Futures Approach: Proposing A New Conceptual And Operational Framework To Foster Responsibility Within The Commercial Property Industry, Gillian O'Brien

Doctoral

This research examines corporate responsible behaviour (CRB) and the role of Futures Studies, as both a philosophy and a critical research methodology in fostering a culture of responsibility within the commercial property industry in the UK. More specific objectives are to critically evaluate CRB and its role in business; to explore the potential role, effects and implications of futures in the development of CRB policy and practice; to propose an integrative conceptual and operational framework for guiding the commercial property industry in formulating systematic, executable CRB policies and practices; and to build a set of propositions that may influence the …

Experiencing Interaction Design: A Pragmatic Theory, Ronald Lengkong Wakkary Jan 2009

Experiencing Interaction Design: A Pragmatic Theory, Ronald Lengkong Wakkary

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses

This thesis contributes a theory for the field of interaction design based on philosophical pragmatism. The theory frames interaction design as a pragmatic experience shaped by the inquiries of designers. The contributions of the theory are that it positions the designer at the centre of a theory, describes interaction design practice to be more than a collection of methods and strategies, and provides a sound basis for generating and verifying new knowledge through design. The thesis describes and analyzes two interaction design research projects through self-reflexive accounts that illustrate the proposed theory. The projects are a tangible museum guide and …

Acute Effects Of Self-Paced Walking On Smoking Withdrawal And Cravings, Magdalena Katomeri Jan 2009

Acute Effects Of Self-Paced Walking On Smoking Withdrawal And Cravings, Magdalena Katomeri

School of Psychology Theses

High relapse rates among smokers attempting to quit have been linked with failure to cope with cigarette cravings and withdrawal symptoms. Smoking cravings and withdrawal behavior is known to be influenced by stress and exposure to smoking cues. Exercise appears to reduce cigarette cravings and withdrawal symptoms. However no study has investigated the effects of exercise on cue-elicited cravings and withdrawal symptoms, or on ad libitum smoking behavior. Aim: Four experimental studies were designed to examine the effects of exercise on smoking behavior. Initial studies focused on the effects of a single session of brisk walk on cigarette cravings and …

Introduction: Approaches To Qualitative Research, John Hogan, Paddy Dolan, Paul Donnelly Jan 2009

Introduction: Approaches To Qualitative Research, John Hogan, Paddy Dolan, Paul Donnelly

Books/Book Chapters

Undertaking a dissertation can be a daunting prospect, irrespective of whether a student is an undergraduate or a postgraduate. The idea of having to start with a blank sheet of paper and finish with anything between 15,000 words for an undergraduate dissertation, and 100,000 words of a PhD dissertation, is an arresting thought. But, even these coarse figures fail to capture the true extent of the work involved, as a finished dissertation is usually only a distillation of volumes of work and words that far exceed the finished product ultimately presented. The various chapters present examples for dissertation students in …

Qualitative Methodology Discussion, Marian Crowley-Henry, Paddy Dolan, Paul Donnelly, Olivia Freeman, John Hogan, Conor Horan, Brendan O'Rourke

Books/Book Chapters

This chapter presents a discussion on the nature of qualitative research. In it, a number of contributors to the book sit down for a general roundtable discussion on qualitative methodologies. Here they express their thinking in relation to a range of questions on qualitative methodologies put to them by the moderator, one of the editors of the volume. The objective of the chapter is to provide readers with an insight into a free flowing discussion amongst academics on the nature of qualitative research. This takes the readers outside of the carefully structured arguments of the authors, as set out in …

The Dynamics Of Human Capital And The World Of Work: Towards A Common Market In Contemporary Tertiary Education, Aidan Kenny Jan 2009

The Dynamics Of Human Capital And The World Of Work: Towards A Common Market In Contemporary Tertiary Education, Aidan Kenny

Level 3

The drive for the so-called ‘knowledge society’, and the expected competitive advantage envisioned, has led to ‘power elites’ and vested interests applying pressure on nation states to develop and implement policies that push the balance of national education systems towards the economic imperative and away from the social good. This social inquiry will describe items, strategies and objectives relating to the pursuit of the current higher education change policy agendas, as expressed in key Irish policy documents.

Uniarab: An Universal Machine Translator System For Arabic Based On Role And Reference Grammar, Brian Nolan, Yasser Salem Jan 2009

Uniarab: An Universal Machine Translator System For Arabic Based On Role And Reference Grammar, Brian Nolan, Yasser Salem

Conference Papers

This paper presents a machine translation system (Hutchins 2003) called UniArab (Salem, Hensman and Nolan 2008). It is a proof-of-concept system supporting the fundamental aspects of Arabic, such as the parts of speech, agreement and tenses. UniArab is based on the linking algorithm of RRG (syntax to semantics and vice versa). UniArab takes MSA Arabic as input in the native orthography, parses the sentence(s) into a logical meta-representation based on the fully expanded RRG logical structures and, using this, generates perfectly grammatical English output with full agreement and morphological resolution. UniArab utilizes an XML-based implementation of elements of the Role …

Signs Of Access In A Digital World: Online Delivery Of Deaf Studies Curricula In Ireland At Third Level,, Brian Nolan, Lorraine Leeson Jan 2009

Signs Of Access In A Digital World: Online Delivery Of Deaf Studies Curricula In Ireland At Third Level,, Brian Nolan, Lorraine Leeson

Conference Papers

Irish Sign Language (ISL), an indigenous language of Ireland, is recognized by the European Union as a natural language. It is a language separate from the other languages used in Ireland, including English, Irish, and, in Northern Ireland, British Sign Language. Some 5,000 Deaf people use ISL. Given the history of suppression of signed languages across the EU, the average Deaf person leaves school with a reading age of 8.5 to 9 years. Given this, it is no surprise that Deaf people are the most under-represented of all disadvantaged groups at third level. This poses two challenges: (1) getting Deaf …

Preparation, Characterization Of Nipam And Nipam/Bam Copolymer Nanoparticles And Their Acute Toxicity Testing Using An Aquatic Test Battery, Pratap Naha, Alan Casey, Tiziana Tenuta, Iseult Lynch, Kenneth Dawson, Hugh Byrne, Maria Davoren

Articles

Poly N-isopropylacrylamide and N-isopropylacrylamide / N-tert-butylacrylamide copolymer nanoparticles of 50 to 70 nm were prepared by free radical polymerisation. The particle sizes of the copolymer nanoparticles were measured in the test media MilliQ water, Algae Media, Daphnia Media and Microtox Diluent as a function of temperature. Whereas in MilliQ water the particle size was seen to decrease above the lower critical solution temperature of the thermoresponsive polymer, in the test media it was seen to increase significantly, indicative of aggregation. At the temperatures employed for the ecotoxicological studies all particles, with the exception of the 50:50copolymer existed as nanoparticles, however. …

Integrating Learning Technologies With Experiential Learning In A Postgraduate Teacher Education Course, Roisin Donnelly Jan 2009

Integrating Learning Technologies With Experiential Learning In A Postgraduate Teacher Education Course, Roisin Donnelly

Journal Articles

This paper discusses how a Postgraduate Certificate Course in Third Level Learning and Teaching for academic staff in the Republic of Ireland has adopted a particular approach in teacher education. As an important aspect of the successful integration and use of learning technology is the way in which it effectively reflects and articulates a given learning model, this course has its theoretical basis on the Kolb Experiential Learning Cycle (Kolb, 1983). The work illustrates that no one technology can support all types of third level learning and teaching; an effective approach is to combine a range of technologies. The self-study …

Beg, Steal Or Borrow?: The Challenges Faced By Borrowing The Failure Mode And Effects Analysis Method To Elicit The Unintended Consequences Of Implementing Elearning In The Higher Education Context, Frances Boylan Jan 2009

Beg, Steal Or Borrow?: The Challenges Faced By Borrowing The Failure Mode And Effects Analysis Method To Elicit The Unintended Consequences Of Implementing Elearning In The Higher Education Context, Frances Boylan

Papers, presentations and other resources

Effective project management, change management and risk management are key to the successful implementation of elearning. Connected to risk is the notion of unintended consequences, and it is with the issues and concerns surrounding the borrowing of the Failure Mode and Effects Analysis method for a research study to elicit the unintended consequences of the processes and policies put in place at one higher education institute in Ireland to facilitate the roll out of elearning there, that this paper is concerned. The Law of Unintended Consequences holds that any action undertaken can result in desirable and undesirable, as well as …

Identity Management To Support Access Control In E-Health Systems, Xu Chen, Damon Berry, William Grimson

Conference Papers

The related and often challenging topics of identity management and access control form an essential foundation for e-health infrastructure. Several approaches and supporting specifications for electronic healthcare record system (EHR-S) communication have been proposed by research projects and standards development organizations in recent years. For instance, part four of the CEN TC251 EN13606 EHRcom standard and the HL7 Role Based Access Control Draft Standard for Trial Use have helped to specify the nature of access control behaviour in relation to EHR communication within and between healthcare organisations. Access control services are a core component not only of the integrated care …

Reflections Of A Layman On The Ryan Report, Eamon Maher Jan 2009

Reflections Of A Layman On The Ryan Report, Eamon Maher

Books/Chapters

The Ryan Report on abuse of children in institutions of the state which were run by religious orders caused outrage and confusion among all the people of Ireland, both members of the Catholic Church and others. In the aftermath of the immediate shock and the widespread media coverage, it seems useful to reflect on the roots of the problems that gave rise to these horrors and to try to set out a way forward which might help to avoid such things happening in the future. Tony Flannery set about seeking views, comments and analysis which might add some breadth and …

Enabling Adaptation In Trust Computations, Luca Longo, Pierpaolo Dondio, Bresciani Riccardo, Andrew Butterfield, Stephen Barrett

Conference papers

Digital systems have been rapidly evolving within highly dynamic and unstructured environments, where the lack of a central authority forces entities to interact with each other through collaboration and negotiation. Digital agents often use Trust models in order to compute the level of trustworthiness of the partner they want to collaborate with. Unfortunately, due to the evolution speed of open and collaborative environments, the trustworthiness of an agent varies over time, and as a result, Trust models must be continuously adapted to the changing context. In this work we address the problem by presenting a self-adaptive model for Trust computations. …

Shear Class: A Visual Ethnography Of The British Hair Salon: Part Of Portfolio Kurl Up N Dye, I Rae

School of Art, Design and Architecture

In his book The Ongoing Moment, the English writer Geoff Dyer (2005) draws out some of the common themes that have concerned photographers over the last century. His focus is the documentary tradition, primarily American, and within it he notes the homage that younger photographers pay to the history of image making that has gone before them. Barbershops are one example. Tracing a lineage from Walker Evans through Robert Frank to Michael Ormerod, with a short detour by way of Diane Arbus, he notes the ways in which the barbershop has been a recurring motif, how different people have photographed …

Design, Manufacture, Mechanical Testing And Numerical Modelling Of An Asymmetric Composite Crossbow Limb, Amandeep S. Virk, J. Summerscales, W. Hall, S. M. Grove, M. E. Miles

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

This paper considers the design, manufacture, mechanical testing and numerical analysis of a crossbow beam (limb). The limb should be lightweight and permit a high deflection of the beam's tip in order to achieve a good ballistic performance. Consequently, fibre-reinforced polymer matrix composites are suitable candidate materials. However, carbon fibres were considered too brittle for this application. Aramid fibres combine low density and high stiffness but are weak in compression. E-glass fibres are relatively flexible but are of high density. The optimised design developed here uses aramid fibres on the tension face with E-glass fibres on the compression side. This …

The Effects Of Different Types Of Background Music On Preschoolers’ Aggressive Classroom Behavior, Marissa Anne Arnett Jan 2009

The Effects Of Different Types Of Background Music On Preschoolers’ Aggressive Classroom Behavior, Marissa Anne Arnett

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Previous research has suggested that background music influences children's classroom behaviors. However, the results of research to date are conflicting on the effects of hard rock background music on children's behavior. Thus, the purpose of the present study was to examine the differential effects of hard rock and easy listening music on preschoolers' aggressive behaviors during center time (e.g., during free play at the water table, art, blocks, and reading centers). Four classrooms with a combined total of 74 students (31 boys and 43 girls) participated in the study. During the 55-day study, we recorded the frequency of children's aggressive …

The nine principals were also representative of rural, suburban, and urban geographic/demographic regions. The …

When Networks Matter : Mexican Migrants' Access To The Welfare State Through Social Ties, Margaret Louise Ralston Jan 2009

When Networks Matter : Mexican Migrants' Access To The Welfare State Through Social Ties, Margaret Louise Ralston

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

In this thesis, I examine the relationship between social networks among Mexican migrants and usage of welfare benefits. For this research, I use the Mexican Migration Project (MMP) dataset and logistic regression to assess whether social capital plays a significant role in connecting individuals to information and resources that affect their access to public systems of social protection, including welfare benefits. Recent welfare reform legislation has made it increasingly difficult for noncitizens to access the welfare state. Following the work of Massey and Aguilera (2003), I have conceptualized social capital as respondents' connection to their U.S. community and their ties …

Earth's Heat Source -- The Sun, Oliver Manuel Jan 2009

Earth's Heat Source -- The Sun, Oliver Manuel

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

The Sun encompasses planet Earth, supplies the heat that warms it, and even shakes it. The United Nation's Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) assumed that solar influence on Earth's climate is limited to changes in solar irradiance and adopted the consensus opinion of a hydrogen-filled Sun - the Standard Solar Model (SSM). They did not consider the alternative solar model and instead adopted another consensus opinion: Anthropogenic greenhouse gases play a dominant role in climate change. The SSM fails to explain the solar wind, solar cycles, and the empirical link of solar surface activity with Earth's changing climate. The …

Delayed Formation Of Multiple Supernumerary Teeth, Yai-Tin Lin, Sung-Wen Chang, Yng-Tzer J. Lin

Journal of Dental Sciences

Multiple supernumerary teeth in either the maxillary anterior or premolar region can cause uneruption or impaction of the succedaneous permanent teeth. Supernumerary premolars are special in terms of their late development and recurrence. This case report details the use of multiple phases of orthodontic traction in order to obtain ideal clinical results. An 8-year 4-month-old healthy boy had an impacted left upper central incisor and multiple supernumerary teeth among the incisors and premolars. The impacted incisor was successfully moved to its proper position by orthodontic traction and a closed eruption technique. One year later, surgical extraction of three supernumerary premolars …
