Information Outputs And International Trade: Evidence From U.S. State Level Data On Business Air Travel, Anca D. Cristea Jan 2009

Information Outputs And International Trade: Evidence From U.S. State Level Data On Business Air Travel, Anca D. Cristea

Purdue CIBER Working Papers

This paper provides theory and evidence examining the importance of information transfers in international trade. Information is modeled as an endogenous fixed cost of trade that enters as input into market-specific product appeal. Differences in bilateral communication costs, information intensities across traded goods and market potentials across foreign countries determine the optimal level of information transmitted within a trade relationship. Using rich U.S. state-level data on international business class air travel, matched with bilateral data on manufacturing exports, I confirm the model’s predictions that the demand for information transferred via business class travel is directly related to export volumes and …

An Integrated Simulation Environment Combining Process-Driven And Event-Driven Models, Vishnu Sharma Kesaraju Jan 2009

An Integrated Simulation Environment Combining Process-Driven And Event-Driven Models, Vishnu Sharma Kesaraju

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

A simulation framework that integrates process-driven and event-driven approaches offers a powerful combination of tools to the modeler. In process-driven simulation models, the system can be represented by block diagrams or system networks through which entities flow to mimic real life system objects. In event-driven models, the system can be represented by event graphs, which focus on the abstraction of the event rather than on observable physical entities. In this research, a simulation environment is proposed that integrates both the approaches, i.e. process and event. One of the main outcomes of working in such an environment is that modelers can …

The Development Of Preservice Elementary Teachers' Pedagogical Content Knowledge For Scientific Modeling, Michelle Elizabeth Cotterman Jan 2009

The Development Of Preservice Elementary Teachers' Pedagogical Content Knowledge For Scientific Modeling, Michelle Elizabeth Cotterman

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

For teachers to effectively engage students in scientific modeling, they require pedagogical content knowledge (PCK) for this practice. This study examines how preservice elementary teachers develop PCK for scientific modeling when given modeling centered instruction in a science methods course. Our findings indicate preservice teachers made significant pedagogical gains in this practice, shifting from using models as static products to using them as thinking tools for students to develop science content knowledge. However, few viewed learning the practice of scientific modeling as an important learning goal. Preservice teachers also had difficulty translating the depth of their understandings into lesson designs, …

Simulations And Measurements Of Gas-Droplet Flows In Supersonic Jets Expanding Into Vacuum, A Venkattraman, Alina A. Alexeenko

School of Aeronautics and Astronautics Faculty Publications

Simulations and measurements of gas-droplet multiphase flows in application to supersonic expansions into vacuum have been considered and compared with each other. The experiments involved exposing a control surface to a supersonic plume from two different nozzles and measuring the size distribution of droplets at various locations. The simulations are based on the direct simulation Monte Carlo modeling of vapor-phase flow with a one-way coupling of droplet momentum and energy. The droplet trajectories are computed for the experimental conditions for droplets originating at the throat and lip of two different nozzles. The maximum droplet radius reaching the control surface and …

Turn-Coats And Double-Agents In Restoration & Revolution England: The Case Of Robert Ferguson, The Plotter, Melinda S. Zook Jan 2009

Turn-Coats And Double-Agents In Restoration & Revolution England: The Case Of Robert Ferguson, The Plotter, Melinda S. Zook

Department of History Faculty Publications

The propagandist and conspirator, Robert Ferguson, so-called, The Plotter, has always been something of a puzzle to historians; his conversion from Whig to Jacobite following the Glorious Revolution has always been particularly troubling. This essay argues that Ferguson's winding career was far from unusual in the late Stuart era. Many politicians, prelates, playwrights and publicists altered their principles or even their religion within the fast changing political environment of Restoration and Revolution England. Secondly, this essay takes Ferguson seriously as a sophisticated political theorist, arguing that his political principles, from Whig to Jacobite, remained fairly consistent and revolve around his …

A Case Study Of System Power Efficiency Loss Mechanisms In A Multijunction, Spectral Splitting, Concentrator Solar Cell System, J. R. Wilcox, A. W. Haas, J. L. Gray, R. J. Schwartz Jan 2009

A Case Study Of System Power Efficiency Loss Mechanisms In A Multijunction, Spectral Splitting, Concentrator Solar Cell System, J. R. Wilcox, A. W. Haas, J. L. Gray, R. J. Schwartz

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

In multijunction solar cell concentrator systems, it is important for system and cell designers to understand the relative magnitude of each loss mechanism. This investigation of potential system power efficiency improvements for a high-efficiency concentrator system focuses on quantifying the effects that various known loss mechanisms have on the overall system performance. Each of the loss mechanisms that were investigated play a part in the degradation of the device's performance and each of these losses can be reduced by appropriate engineering. This paper will address the extensive optimization of the system power efficiency of a multijunction concentrator solar cell system …

We have proposed a method for estimating the subjective age of a person; that is, a method that yields a person's age on the basis of estimations made by that person about the age of other people by observing their facial images. Thus far, experiments have shown that Japanese people tend to underestimate their subjective age. In this study, we focus on the socio-psychological effects that may influence the underestimation of subjective age. We conducted an international comparative study. In this study, experiments were performed in which American and Japanese participants viewed American facial images; in addition, the American participants …

Ultra-low voltage operation of memory cells has become a topic of much interest due to its applications in very low energy computing and communications. However, due to parameter variations in scaled technologies, stable operation of SRAMs is critical for the success of low-voltage SRAMs. It has been shown that conventional 6T SRAMs fail to achieve reliable subthreshold operation. Hence, researchers have considered different configuration SRAMs for subthreshold operations having single-ended 8T or 10T bit-cells for improved stability. While these bit-cells improve SRAM stability in subthreshold region significantly, the single-ended sensing methods suffer from reduced bit-line swing due to bit-line leakage …

A Dual-Mode Programmable Distributed Amplifier/Mixer, Laleh Rabieirad, Saeed Mohammadi

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

A dual-mode field programmable RF amplifier / mixer is presented. Transistor switches, low loss CPW lines and RF transistors are combined in a 3-stage distributed topology which can operate as either a distributed amplifier or a distributed mixer. Functional reconfigurability is achieved using one bit programming without changing the signal path. The programmable module in its distributed amplifier mode provides a gain of 8dB in a 3-8 GHz bandwidth. When switched to the distributed mixer mode, it shows a measured average conversion gain of 4dB in a 1-16GHz bandwidth. This circuit is fabricated in a standard 130nm CMOS technology and …

A Linear Programming Approach To Shipboard Electrical System Modeling, Ricky R. Chan, Scott D. Sudhoff, Yonggon Lee, Edwin L. Zivi Jan 2009

A Linear Programming Approach To Shipboard Electrical System Modeling, Ricky R. Chan, Scott D. Sudhoff, Yonggon Lee, Edwin L. Zivi

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

Operability and dependability metrics can be a valuable tool in early ship design by providing a quantitative analysis of the robustness of the ship's integrated engineering plant (IEP). However, the use of these metrics involves large numbers of time domain simulations of the IEP. The simulation of such a complex system, which includes electrical and thermal subsystems, can be problematic in terms of computational efficiency. In this paper, a simplified modeling approach based on the fundamental power limitations is set forth. The power flow problem is posed as a linear programming problem which is solved using a simplex method.

A Mimo-Ofdm Channel Estimation Scheme Utilizing Complementary Sequences, T. R. Qureshi, M. D. Zoltowski, R. Calderbank Jan 2009

A Mimo-Ofdm Channel Estimation Scheme Utilizing Complementary Sequences, T. R. Qureshi, M. D. Zoltowski, R. Calderbank

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

We present a pilot-assisted method for estimating the frequency selective channel in a MIMO-OFDM system. The pilot sequence is designed using the DFT of the Golay complementary sequences. Novel exploitation of the perfect autocorrelation property of Golay complementary sequences, in conjunction with OSTBC based pilot waveform scheduling across multiple OFDM frames, facilitates simple separation of the channel mixtures at the receive antennas. The DFT length used to transform the complementary sequence into the frequency domain is shown to be a key critical parameter for correctly estimating the channel. This channel estimation scheme is then extended to antenna arrays of arbitrary …

Institutional Repositories And Research Data Curation In A Distributed Environment, Michael Witt

Libraries Research Publications

Broadly speaking, the lack of a framework for organizing, preserving, and making research data available for the long-term has resulted in valuable datasets becoming lost or discarded. The approach of the Distributed Data Curation Center of the Purdue University Libraries has been to integrate librarians and the principles of library and archival sciences with domain sciences, computer and information sciences, and information technology to address the challenges of managing collections of research data and to learn how to better support interdisciplinary research through data curation. One piece of infrastructure that supports these activities is a “distributed institutional repository” that includes …

Cues To Contrastive Focus In Romanian, Alis Manolescu, Daniel J. Olson, Marta Ortega-Llebaria Jan 2009

Cues To Contrastive Focus In Romanian, Alis Manolescu, Daniel J. Olson, Marta Ortega-Llebaria

School of Languages and Cultures Faculty Publications

In this study we measured patterns of pitch alignment, pitch range and duration in relation to broad and contrastive focus in Romanian. In declarative sentences with broad focus, speakers place a pitch accent on each lexically stressed syllable with peaks that become progressively lower towards the end of the sentence. In prenuclear accents peaks align with the post-tonic syllable. In declarative sentences with contrastive focus, speakers use strategies based on pitch and duration in order to build a maximum contrast between the word under focus and those in pre- and post-focal contexts: an expanded pitch range under focus and a …

Extensive Training Is Insufficient To Produce The Work-Ethic Effect In Pigeons, Marco Vasconcelos, Peter J. Urcuioli Jan 2009

Extensive Training Is Insufficient To Produce The Work-Ethic Effect In Pigeons, Marco Vasconcelos, Peter J. Urcuioli

Department of Psychological Sciences Faculty Publications

Zentall and Singer (2007a) hypothesized that our failure to replicate the work-ethic effect in pigeons (Vasconcelos, Urcuioli, & Lionello-DeNolf, 2007) was due to insufficient overtraining following acquisition of the high- and low-effort discriminations. We tested this hypothesis using the original work-ethic procedure (Experiment 1) and one similar to that used with starlings (Experiment 2) by providing at least 60 overtraining sessions. Despite this extensive overtraining, neither experiment revealed a significant preference for stimuli obtained after high effort. Together with other findings, these data support our contention that pigeons do not reliably show a work-ethic effect.

Building The Latin America We Want: Supplementing Representative Democracies With Consensus-Building, Mariana Hernández Crespo Jan 2009

Building The Latin America We Want: Supplementing Representative Democracies With Consensus-Building, Mariana Hernández Crespo

Cardozo Journal of Conflict Resolution

This article is about using consensus-building to create channels for meaningful participation in public decision-making, in order to supplement representative democracies in Latin America. I argue that the addition of a consensus-building mechanism into the legislative process will create the necessary forum for stakeholders to contribute to the framing and resolution of issues of public concern. Furthermore, as Susskind has argued, allowing citizens to participate at the beginning of decision-making processes will make legislative outcomes more legitimate and decrease the level of political dissatisfaction.
