A Closer Look At One Elementary School's Use Of Informational Text In Classroom Instruction, Marjean Sorensen Dec 2009

A Closer Look At One Elementary School's Use Of Informational Text In Classroom Instruction, Marjean Sorensen

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this action research study was to explore the use of informational text in kindergarten through sixth grade classrooms in one elementary school. The research was based on analyzing responses given by teachers on a self-report survey; which addressed various aspects of their use of informational texts. The survey included questions about the sources teachers used to find informational texts, the criteria used in selection of such texts, and the frequency and purposes for informational text use. These data were then compared according to teachers' years of teaching experience and grade level taught to see the influence of …

Ecological Linkages Between Headwater Streams And Riparian And Downstream Habitats In The Eastern Cascade Range, Washington, Usa, Elizabeth C. Green Dec 2009

Ecological Linkages Between Headwater Streams And Riparian And Downstream Habitats In The Eastern Cascade Range, Washington, Usa, Elizabeth C. Green

Biological Sciences

"I examined how headwater streams are ecologically linked with the terrestrial environment and upstream waters. I examined relationships between fish (rainbow and cutthroat trout), invertebrates, and habitat in 15 headwater streams in two ecoregions (wet, dry) and timber harvest scenarios (logged, unlogged) in the Wenatchee River sub-basin in the eastern Cascade Mountain Range, Washington state, USA. Fish biomass, density, and size were not related to ecoregion or to logging history. Invertebrate drift manipulations in 13 streams influenced fish movement (fish moved downstream in sites that were not supplemented with food) and diet (fish consumed less prey when drifting invertebrates were …

Expenditures, Efficiency, And Effectiveness In U.S. Undergraduate Higher Education: A National Benchmark Model, Brett A. Powell Dec 2009

Expenditures, Efficiency, And Effectiveness In U.S. Undergraduate Higher Education: A National Benchmark Model, Brett A. Powell

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of the study was to investigate the relationship between expenditures and efficiency and effectiveness in U.S. higher education institutions and whether that relationship can begin to answer the accountability questions facing these institutions. Institutions are facing questions from federal legislators, state legislators, parents, students, and other stakeholders about the cost of U.S. higher education and whether these costs lead to success in educating students. Using the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (2003-04) and the National Study of Postsecondary Faculty (2004), canonical correlation analysis and structural equation modeling were used to define and determine the relationship among four constructs: …

No Child Left Behind: Perspectives And Knowledge Of Parental Involvement Component Section 1118 Among Administrators And Parents In Elementary Schools, Jill Yvette Brooks

Theses and Dissertations

No Child Left Behind (NCLB) requires states, districts, and schools develop and implement parental involvement policies, yet, the extent of implementation remains largely unmeasured (United States Department of Education, 2002). Thus, the researcher surveyed 142 elementary school administrators and 639 parents in a southern state to determine if a statistically significant difference existed between parent and administrator perceptions and practices and current knowledge of parental involvement as outlined in NCLB and whether parental responses differed by demographics. The survey utilized a four-point Likert-type Scale with 12 questions measuring perceptions and practices (Cronbach's alpha = .84) and 8 measuring current knowledge …

Real Time Network Monitoring And Reporting System, Ricky Lee Massengale Sr. Dec 2009

Real Time Network Monitoring And Reporting System, Ricky Lee Massengale Sr.

Theses and Dissertations

With the ability of modern system developers to develop intelligent programs that allows machines to learn, modify and evolve themselves, current trends of reactionary methods to detect and eradicate malicious software code from infected machines is proving to be too costly. Addressing malicious software after an attack is the current methodology and should be a fallback approach. A modern approach should be to perpetually monitor the "enterprise network backbone" traffic and broadcast alerts while taking protective and pre-emptive measures, in the event that the traffic falls out of the bounds of pre-described norms. This work demonstrates that a synergy approach …

The Flight Periodicity, Attack Patterns, And Life History Of Dryocoetes Confusus Swaine (Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Scolytinae), The Western Balsam Bark Beetle, In North Central Colorado, José F. Negrón, John B. Popp

Western North American Naturalist

Dryocoetes confusus Swaine, the western balsam bark beetle, is an important bark beetle associated with Abies lasiocarpa (Hook.) Nutt. (subalpine fir) in western North America. Little information is available on the life cycle and ecology of this insect in Colorado. In this study in north central Colorado, we examined its flight periodicity, attack patterns, and life cycle in downed trees. Flight season, as indicated by pheromone-trap catches, began in early June. Peak flight was observed during early to mid-July. A second peak in flight was observed in some years, but its occurrence was not consistent. Preferred attack sites on downed …

Estimating Root Biomass And Distribution After Fire In A Great Basin Woodland Using Cores And Pits, Benjamin M. Rau, Dale W. Johnson, Jeanne C. Chambers, Robert R. Blank, Annmarie Lucchesi Dec 2009

Estimating Root Biomass And Distribution After Fire In A Great Basin Woodland Using Cores And Pits, Benjamin M. Rau, Dale W. Johnson, Jeanne C. Chambers, Robert R. Blank, Annmarie Lucchesi

Western North American Naturalist

Quantifying root biomass is critical to an estimation and understanding of ecosystem net primary production, biomass partitioning, and belowground competition. We compared 2 methods for determining root biomass: a new soil-coring technique and traditional excavation of quantitative pits. We conducted the study in an existing Joint Fire Sciences demonstration area in the central Great Basin. This area is representative of a shrub (sagebrush) ecosystem exhibiting tree (pinyon and juniper) encroachment. The demonstration area had a prescribed burn implemented 4 years prior to our study, and we sampled both control and burned plots. The samples were stratified across 3 microsites (interspace, …

Differential Phytosociological Interactions Involving Male And Female Atriplex Bonnevillensis, Jordan Sinclair, John M. Emlen, Matthew Rinella, Jessica Snelgrove, D. Carl Freeman

Western North American Naturalist

Wind-pollinated dioecious plants often exhibit spatial segregation of the sexes. This partial niche separation has most often been explored using abiotic niche axes. However, if the sexes are truly separated in space, then they are apt to encounter different plant species that may heavily affect growth and reproduction. Also, to the extent that their niches differ, the sexes may respond differently to the same co-occurring species. Here we examine interspecific interactions that influence male and female reproductive potential in Atriplex bonnevillensis. Using Emlen's interaction assessment, a technique which assesses species interactions based on cover classes, we show that Salsola species …

Distribution And Postbreeding Environmental Relationships Of Northern Leopard Frogs (Rana [Lithobates] Pipiens) In Washington, Stephen S. Germaine, Dave W. Hays

Western North American Naturalist

Northern leopard frogs (Rana [Lithobates] pipiens) are considered sensitive, threatened, or endangered in all western states and western Canadian provinces. Historically present in eastern Washington in 6 major river drainages, leopard frogs are now only known to occur at 2 localized areas in the Crab Creek drainage in Grant County. During the summers of 2002–2005, we surveyed both areas to document extent of leopard frog distributions and to describe habitat and vertebrate community characteristics associated with leopard frog site occupancy. At Gloyd Seeps, 2 juvenile leopard frogs were observed in a total of 8.2 person-days of …

Deliberation Versus Dispute: The Impact Of Argumentative Discourse Goals On Learning And Reasoning In The Science Classroom, Mark Felton, Merce Garcia-Mila, Sandra Gilabert Dec 2009

Deliberation Versus Dispute: The Impact Of Argumentative Discourse Goals On Learning And Reasoning In The Science Classroom, Mark Felton, Merce Garcia-Mila, Sandra Gilabert

Faculty Publications

Researchers in science education have converged on the view that argumentation can be an effective intervention for promoting knowledge construction in science classrooms. However, the impact of such interventions may be mediated by individuals’ task goals while arguing. In argumentative discourse, one can distinguish two overlapping but distinct kinds of activity: dispute and deliberation. In dispute the goal is to defend a conclusion by undermining alternatives, whereas in deliberation the goal is to arrive at a conclusion by contrasting alternatives. In this study, we examine the impact of these discourse goals on both content learning and argument quality in science.

Adult Learning Satisfaction And Instructional Perspective In The Foreign Language Classroom, Linda Jo Ryan

Dissertations

Adult education literature suggests that the instructional perspective of the teacher has an important effect on adult satisfaction with learning. In this study, the relationships between instructional perspective, satisfaction with language learning, and certain teacher and student characteristics were investigated. Study participants were adult students enrolled in noncredit foreign language courses offered through a community college’s Continuing Education program and their teachers. Henschke’s Modified Instructional Perspectives Inventory (MIPI) was used to evaluate teacher-reported use of andragogical principles. The MIPI is comprised of seven subscales: Factor 1: Teacher Empathy with Learners, Factor 2: Teacher Trust of Learners, Factor 3: Planning and …

Identification And Characterization Of Inconnu Spawning Habitat In The Sulukna River, Alaska, Jonathon D. Gerken Dec 2009

Identification And Characterization Of Inconnu Spawning Habitat In The Sulukna River, Alaska, Jonathon D. Gerken

Fisheries

Inconnu (Stenodus leucichthys) is present throughout much of the Yukon River drainage in Alaska, but only five spawning areas have been identified. Spawning habitat requirements are therefore thought to be very specific; however, the physical qualities of these habitats have only been characterized in general terms. The Sulukna River is one of five identified inconnu spawning areas within the Yukon River drainage. A systematic sampling design was used in September and October of 2007-2008 to define Sulukna River spawning locations. Presence of inconnu was identified using hook and line sampling methods and spawning was verified by catching broadcast eggs in …

Analysis Of Adult Sport Fishing Lesson Choices And Their Application To Post-Secondary Curriculum Development, Shann Paul Jones Dec 2009

Analysis Of Adult Sport Fishing Lesson Choices And Their Application To Post-Secondary Curriculum Development, Shann Paul Jones

Fisheries

"Post-secondary angler education offerings have increased nationally, but little is known about what sport fishing skills anglers desire. I noticed variations in such curricula while developing the University of Alaska Fairbanks course, Fundamentals of Fly Fishing. My study objectives were to 1) determine what fly-fishing skills potential students desire so they invest both time and money attending my education events; 2) refine my offerings; and, 3) determine if students gained angling-related knowledge. I developed a questionnaire gauging the public's fly-fishing educational desires and requirements, and distributed it from 2003 to 2005. After analyzing the results, I revised my class to …

Theoretical And Experimental Investigations Of Resonance Fluorescence Lidar For Measurements Of N₂ In The Auroral Atmosphere, Agatha S. Light Dec 2009

Theoretical And Experimental Investigations Of Resonance Fluorescence Lidar For Measurements Of N₂ In The Auroral Atmosphere, Agatha S. Light

Atmospheric Sciences

"In this thesis, a series of experimental and theoretical studies of the resonance fluorescence lidar system at Poker Flat Research Range (located in Chatanika, Alaska) for use in obtaining measurements of aurorally produced molecular nitrogen ions (N₂) are presented. Obtaining measurements of N₂ is made challenging by both the operational performance of the resonance lidar system and the high degree of geophysical variability inherent in the aurora. Analyses are conducted of measurements obtained by the operational sodium and iron resonance lidar systems to verify the lidar system performance. To increase the strength and quality of the lidar measurements, the telescope …

Channeling University-Based Sponsored Research Into Classroom Education, Badrul H. Chowdhury

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

An important mission of university-Based research that often gets overlooked is the education component. based on the 2005-2006 Electric Power Engineering Education Resources report produced by PES, tens of millions of dollars' worth of research is being conducted annually by university faculty throughout North America. While such sponsored research almost always produces master's and Ph.D. dissertations, how much of that is channeled into creating a broader impact of educating undergraduate and graduate students is of concern to many sponsoring agencies. This paper presents a summary of panel presentations that describe and discuss examples of how some faculty members have brought …
