Background: Microarray analysis and 454 cDNA sequencing were used to investigate a centuries-old problem in regenerative biology: The basis of nerve-dependent limb regeneration in salamanders. Innervated (NR) and denervated (DL) forelimbs of Mexican axolotls were amputated and transcripts were sampled after 0, 5, and 14 days of regeneration. Results: Considerable similarity was observed between NR and DL transcriptional programs at 5 and 14 days post amputation (dpa). Genes with extracellular functions that are critical to wound healing were upregulated while muscle-specific genes were downregulated. Thus, many processes that are regulated during early limb regeneration do not depend upon nerve-derived factors. …

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

Based upon morphological characters, Silver carp Hypophthalmichthys molitrix and bighead carp Hypophthalmichthys nobilis (or Aristichthys nobilis) have been classified into either the same genus or two distinct genera. Consequently, the taxonomic relationship of the two species at the generic level remains equivocal. This issue is addressed by sequencing complete mitochondrial genomes of H. molitrix and H. nobilis, comparing their mitogenome organization, structure and sequence similarity, and conducting a comprehensive phylogenetic analysis of cyprinid species. As with other cyprinid fishes, the mitogenomes of the two species were structurally conserved, containing 37 genes including 13 protein-coding genes, two ribosomal RNA …

Lek Behavior As A Model For Multi-Robot Systems, Brittany Duncan, Patrick D. Ulam, Ronald C. Arkin Jan 2009

Lek Behavior As A Model For Multi-Robot Systems, Brittany Duncan, Patrick D. Ulam, Ronald C. Arkin

School of Computing: Technical Reports

Lek behavior is a biological mechanism used by male birds to attract mates by forming a group. This project explores the use of a biological behavior found in many species of birds to form leks to guide the creation of groups of robots. The lek behavior provides a sound basis for multi-robot formation because it demonstrates a group of individual entities forming up around a scarce resource. This behavior can be useful to robots in many situations, with an example scenario the case in which robots were dropped via parachute into an area and then needed to form meaningful task-oriented …

An Experimental And Numerical Investigation Of Flapping And Plunging Wings, Taylor A. Swanson Jan 2009

An Experimental And Numerical Investigation Of Flapping And Plunging Wings, Taylor A. Swanson

Doctoral Dissertations

"Micro air vehicles, or MAVs, are of current interest for a multitude of uses to which they, being small, unmanned vehicles, are uniquely suited. Among the proposed uses are exploration, reconnaissance, and communications. They can be deployed inside buildings, where their small size, hovering capability, and maneuverability, are important factors. Due to their small size, they operate at low Reynolds numbers where conventional flying mechanisms are not advantageous. Thus, attempts have been made to learn from natural flyers like insects and birds. Natural flight is accomplished by flapping wings, and this idea has been proposed for certain types of MAVs …

Construction Of Mitochondrion-Targeted Telomerase For Analysis In Saccharomyces Cerevisiae, Ricardo. Martin Jan 2009

Construction Of Mitochondrion-Targeted Telomerase For Analysis In Saccharomyces Cerevisiae, Ricardo. Martin

Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2003 - 2009

Telomerase is associated with telomere production and nDNA protection. However, studies by Santos et al. have demonstrated that human telomerase has a mitochondrial entry sequence and in the presence of hydrogen peroxide it has been found inside the mitochondrion and may cause mitochondrial DNA mutations. Saccharomyces cerevisiae contains telomerase, but it does not have the mitochondrial entry sequence. To determine if the presence of telomerase in the mitochondria can induce mutations an experiment was developed in which a mitochondrion entry sequence would be fused to the S. cerevisiae telomerase enzyme. This fusion could then be screened in S. cerevisiae with …

Population Density, Circulating Testosterone And Dawn Chorus Behaviour In White-Throated Sparrows (Zonotrichia Albicollis), Simon Richard Hall Jan 2009

Population Density, Circulating Testosterone And Dawn Chorus Behaviour In White-Throated Sparrows (Zonotrichia Albicollis), Simon Richard Hall

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

An integrative approach to biological research has facilitated the study not only of specific phenomena, but of the connections between these phenomena. A particularly striking example is that of the relationships between testosterone, social behavior, and social context. Increased levels of testosterone increase the frequency of aggressive behaviors and reduce the quality of parental care in many songbird species, and these changes in behavior can affect the surrounding social environment. Different social contexts, population density as a readily studied example, affect the cues that control the release of testosterone into the bloodstream. The distinct tan-stripe and white-stripe phenotypic morphs of …

“Species Pollution” In Florida: A Cross-Section Of Invasive Vertebrate Issues And Management Responses, Richard M. Engeman, Bernice Constantin, Scott Hardin, Henry Smith, Walter Meshaka Jr. Jan 2009

“Species Pollution” In Florida: A Cross-Section Of Invasive Vertebrate Issues And Management Responses, Richard M. Engeman, Bernice Constantin, Scott Hardin, Henry Smith, Walter Meshaka Jr.

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

The state of Florida as among the two worst invasive species problems in the USA. Besides the sheer numbers of established exotic species in Florida, many present novel difficulties for management, or have other characteristics making effective management extremely challenging. Moreover, initiation of management action requires more than recognition by experts that a potentially harmful species has become established. It also requires the political will along with concomitant resources and appropriate personnel to develop effective methods and apply them. We illustrate various aspects of the situation in Florida with examples of invasive vertebrates, the problems they pose(d), and management approaches …

Synthesis, Structural Characterization And Biological Studies Of Organotin Polyethers (Sn-O), Girish Vallabhbhai Barot

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Cancer is the second leading cause of death in the western world. In order to treat various types of cancer, platinum-based drugs are most widely employed as metal-containing chemotherapeutic agents. However, their clinical usage is hindered by toxic side effects, and by the emergence of drug resistance. Our focus was to replace platinum with less toxic metal like tin which can give better alternatives for cancer treatment. The major aim of our study was to synthesize novel organotin polyethers (Sn-O) which can be used to combat cancer. Preliminary results from our laboratory using organotin polyethers, that were synthesized by varying …

Potential Therapies And Neuroprotective Cascades In Anoxia Tolerant Freshwater Turtle Trachemys Scripta Ellegans, Gauri. Nayak Jan 2009

Potential Therapies And Neuroprotective Cascades In Anoxia Tolerant Freshwater Turtle Trachemys Scripta Ellegans, Gauri. Nayak

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Mammalian neurons exhibit extreme sensitivity to oxygen deprivation and undergo rapid and irreversible degeneration when oxygen supply is curtailed. Though several neuroprotective pathways are activated during oxygen deprivation, their analyses are masked by the complex series of pathological events which are triggered simultaneously. Such events can be analyzed in the anoxia tolerant fresh water turtle, which can inherently survive the conditions of oxygen deprivation and post-anoxic reoxygenation without brain damage. It is likely in such a model that modulation of a particular molecular pathway is adaptive rather than pathological. The major objective behind this study was to analyze the intracellular …

Design And Synthesis Of Benzimidazoles As Cdk5 Inhibitors And Progress Toward The Total Synthesis Of Tubulysin D, Shuyan Yi

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis describes the design and synthesis of 1,4,6-trisubstituted benzimidazoles as CDK5 inhibitors and the progress toward the total synthesis of tubulysin D.

Tubulysin is a natural product with potential anti-cancer activity. The two gamma-amino acids in the Tuv and Tup fragments of tubulysin were synthesized. Evans' oxazolidinone chemistry was employed for the stereoselective synthesis of Cbz-beta-homovaline in Tuv fragment. A crystal structure of the Tup fragment was obtained.

Cyclin dependent kinase 5 (CDK5) is one of the kinases that can hyperphosphorylate tau. Selective inhibition of the CDK5/p25 complex may be a useful component for Alzheimer's disease therapy. Benzimidazole based …
