Brazil serves as a potent example of a nation striving to meet the public healthcare needs of a complex and diverse society. To evaluate how a public hospital in Montes Claros, Brazil has attempted to reconcile HIV/AIDS outcome gaps, this study examined aspects of the demographic profi les of public health clients receiving HIV exams in the largest city in Northern Minas Gerais at two respective sites. Age, sex, and residential neighborhood for clients tested for HIV during an eight month period in 2007-2008 at HUCF and CTA were statistically compared. In comparison to CTA, the …

Teaching Star Trek As Anthropology, Margaret Williamson Huber
Teaching Star Trek As Anthropology, Margaret Williamson Huber
Southern Anthropologist
The original Star Trek television show is a “natural” for teaching anthropology. Like all science fi ction, the show is a refl ection of contemporary concerns--a form of mythology. Beyond this, the original show relied extensively on anthropological theory and ethnography in the construction of its plots. The author’s undergraduate course, described in this paper, aims to make students aware of these and also of the concerns of the nineteen-sixties (Viet Nam, the Cold War, civil rights, Hippies) that motivated many of the episodes. In the process, it illustrates how popular culture texts can be used in the classroom to …

Structures For Environmental Action, Katherine Bunting-Howart, Avi Brisman, Willett Kempton, Dorothy C. Holland, Peggy F. Bartlett
Southern Anthropologist
This article develops a typology of what we term “structures for action”—strategies, mechanisms, and means—used by local environmental groups to facilitate actions such as lifestyle shifts, civic protest, and environmental preservation. Based on data from nineteen groups in several states, we distinguish between internal structures that facilitate action for members of the groups and external structures that facilitate action among nonmembers and other groups. Within both internal and external structures, we identify three dimensions: knowledge, meaning, and praxis. Our typology of structures for action is designed to stimulate further research and to be useful for environmental groups, as well as …
(Ad)Dressing Masculinity: Male Cosplay Performance At Fan Cons, Jonathan Broussard
(Ad)Dressing Masculinity: Male Cosplay Performance At Fan Cons, Jonathan Broussard
Southern Anthropologist
The costumed science fiction, fantasy gaming, or anime fan, dressed as his favorite character, holds a place within the popular imagination as a “true” representation of the fan community, creating an image of this exotic other. That generalized image also contains stereotypes about male fans as being “unmanly” with regard to the understood conception of masculinity in the United States in general and the South in particular. I suggest that through cosplay, the practice of costumed role-play, male fans perform their masculinity in such a way that both acknowledges and subverts the dominant American conceptions while appropriating their power to …
Spatial Mobility And Cultural Capital: Latino Students At Emma Elementary, Michael Mccabe
Spatial Mobility And Cultural Capital: Latino Students At Emma Elementary, Michael Mccabe
Southern Anthropologist
[2009 Undergraduate Prize Winner]
Using participant-observer methodology, I studied Latino students at a Buncombe County, NC, elementary school in the months of February through April 2007, looking for qualities of relationship formation and interaction as mediated by three principles – spatial mobility, cultural capital, and social proximity. These three dynamics were used to analyze the distinct environments of the classroom, lunch, and recess and explain motives as well as tendencies in the students’ interactions. The amount of social proximity and the necessity for cultural capital were found to be in an inverse relationship with the amount of spatial mobility available. …

Pedagogies That Foster Transformative Learning In A Multicultural Education Course: A Reflection, Omiunota Nelly Ukpokodu
Pedagogies That Foster Transformative Learning In A Multicultural Education Course: A Reflection, Omiunota Nelly Ukpokodu
Journal of Praxis in Multicultural Education
This paper reports on a qualitative study that investigated pedagogies that foster transformative learning in a multicultural education course. In this study, teachers identified the following as pedagogies that fostered their learning transformation and moved them from color-blindness to color-vision: (1) dialogic relationships in a learning community, (2) writing pre-post narrative inquiries, (3) engagement in structured and threaded online discussions, (4) critical textual discourse, (5) experiential activities, and (6) experiencing a humanizing pedagogy.

Creating A Category V: Conservation Perceptions And Cultural Changes In The Anjozorobe-Angavo Forest Corridor, Kate Wright
Creating A Category V: Conservation Perceptions And Cultural Changes In The Anjozorobe-Angavo Forest Corridor, Kate Wright
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
Local communities have long played an integral role in the realization of conservation goals and the success of protected areas in Madagascar. Since the appearance of human civilizations approximately 2,000 years ago (Brown 1995), the physical landscape of the island has undergone processes of adaptation to the practices of Malagasy people, while Malagasy cultures have in turn molded to fit their surroundings. The coevolution of nature and culture has produced a delicate environmental situation where human practices exploit but also conserve important natural resources, a situation that has been historically misinterpreted as intentional environmental destruction on the part of local …

A Comparison Of Algorithms That Estimate The Effectiveness Of Commercial Airline Boarding Strategies, Dalila Giraldo
A Comparison Of Algorithms That Estimate The Effectiveness Of Commercial Airline Boarding Strategies, Dalila Giraldo
Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses
The number of passengers carried by commercial aircraft has increased dramatically over the past 50 years, closely in-step with advances in aircraft design. This makes unloading and loading an aircraft, called turn-around time, critical to the success of the airport, the aircraft and the airlines. A number of mathematical algorithms have been developed over the years that purport to determine the most efficient boarding strategy for passengers by decreasing turn time. This thesis evaluated the boarding strategies most often used by the airlines and algorithms used to predict boarding efficiency. The models used were obtained from the literature and from …
Cultural Tourism In Botswana And The Sexaxa Cultural Village: A Case Study, Rachel Jones
Cultural Tourism In Botswana And The Sexaxa Cultural Village: A Case Study, Rachel Jones
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
Botswana has seen tremendous growth in its tourism industry since its real inception the 1980s. Unfortunately, the tourism sector has almost solely focused on photographic and hunting safaris at the expense of cultural tourism. Because there is potential for rural development through effective cultural tourism, this study aimed to look at the case of one such rural community and their venture into cultural tourism. The Sexaxa community and their Cultural Village was studied to understand multiple facets of the issue. The history of the Bayei tribe, the history of the cultural village, how much the cultural village reflects the modern …
Street Culture Of Mombasa: Are The Survivors Really Surviving?, Danny Low
Street Culture Of Mombasa: Are The Survivors Really Surviving?, Danny Low
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
Street children of Mombasa, Kenya were ethnographically studied in order to determine the effects of Swahili culture and structural violence on the children’s culture and place within greater society. It was discovered that Mombasa magnetizes street children as a result of the generosity of Swahili culture. Drug use was inextricably linked to street culture, yet children nonetheless held strong dreams of education. Since street children were also discovered to be significantly stratified, future policy and programming must account for these divisions to appropriately address the education and health problems facing Mombasa street children.
Music In Its Social Context: Fiji In A Microcosm, Alexander Greene
Music In Its Social Context: Fiji In A Microcosm, Alexander Greene
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
The music of Fiji flows throughout the country as rich as the food and as omnipresent as the kava. Music touches all aspects of the Fijian way of life. Whether one is Indo-Fijian, Indigenous Fijian, from another pacific island, kylomo, or a kavailagi, there is no escaping music while in Fiji. This paper looks to explore the different social settings and context that music is created and then in turn listened to, and how the social setting of Fiji has shaped what music is created here. This paper also attempts to gather in a cohesive manner, what music is being …

IAA Reports—Monograph Series of the Israel Antiquities Authority
This is the first of two volumes documenting the IAA excavations at this site in the ‘Akko Plain. This volume presents the early periods, including occupation during the Pre-Pottery Neolithic to the Chalcolithic periods, with significant pottery and flint finds, then a substantial EB IA settlement, an Intermediate Bronze Age settlement and an ephemeral presence in the Late Bronze Age, as evidenced by the pottery finds. The site lay in ruins throughout the Iron Age until an extensive resettlement in the Persian period and a small Hellenistic-period presence.
