Enhancing Psychological Assessment In Sub-Saharan Africa Through Participant Consultation, Amina Abubakar, Fons J. R. Van De Vijver, Anneloes Van Baar, Patricia Kitsao-Wekulo, Penny Holding
Papers from the International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology Conferences
There are few psychological tools developed and standardized for use in sub-Saharan Africa. Consulting with target populations provides a potentially powerful procedure to develop and adapt measures for this population. This review identifies and describes methods used to consult target populations in sub-Saharan Africa. Relevant studies were identified using PsycINFO and PubMed, supplemented by a review of relevant books. We further illustrate the role of participant consultation in psychological assessment with examples of our work in Kilifi (Kenya). Three major approaches are described: focus groups, individual interviews, and participant observation. Participants have been consulted to generate items, identify appropriate assessment …

Youtube, The Internet And Iaccp: Opportunities And Challenges For Cross-Cultural Psychology, William K. Gabrenya Jr., Nathalie Van Meurs, Ronald Fischer
Papers from the International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology Conferences
We culturalists are an unusual lot! Dispersed geographically and divided socially by potential and real political conflict, economic competition, religious disagreement and vast disparities in wealth and resources, we struggle with the dilemma of studying diversities that can only be understood adequately through effective communication and collaboration. The International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology was conceptualized by psychologists who recognized and participated in this dialectical context. The Founders set out to create an organization that would provide communication venues in order to facilitate the development of a community of psychologists who would collaborate on cultural research. Communication, indeed, was the starting …
Causes Of Culture: National Differences In Cultural Embeddedness, Shalom H. Schwartz
Causes Of Culture: National Differences In Cultural Embeddedness, Shalom H. Schwartz
Papers from the International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology Conferences
What causes national differences in culture? Past attempts to answer this question take insufficient account of how slowly culture changes or of the fact that culture itself influences the social structural, political, and demographic variables identified as causes. Convincing causes of cultural differences must meet three criteria: They should reflect the formative historical experiences of societies, they should not be influenced reciprocally by culture, and theoretically plausible process should explain their impact on culture. I propose and explain causes of national differences in cultural embeddedness, a value orientation that calls upon people to find meaning in life through identifying with …

A Vocation As Politics: Work And Popular Theology In A Consumer Culture, Jeffrey E. Scholes
A Vocation As Politics: Work And Popular Theology In A Consumer Culture, Jeffrey E. Scholes
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The idea of vocation or a calling is particularly salient in much business motivational literature and popular Christian self-help books alike. Promoted is the idea of vocation that glosses over issues stemming from political power in the corporate workplace in order to given meaning to workers in spite of working conditions. In this form, vocations are unable to engage one's working life in ways that they can and should. I argue that recent trends in academic theologies of vocation as well as the role of consumer culture combine to allow the ascendancy of this form of the idea. I support …

Informing Early Intervention Through An Occupational Science Description Of Infant–Toddler Interactions With Home Space, Doris Pierce, Veronique Munier, Christine T. Myers
Occupational Science and Occupational Therapy Faculty and Staff Research
OBJECTIVE: The study provides a substantive description of infant and toddler play with everyday objects and independent negotiation of home space. METHOD: A grounded theory approach was used to study 18 typically developing children longitudinally from ages 1 to 18 months. Data from 133 home visits included videotaped self-directed play sessions with usual objects, maternal interviews, and observation records. RESULTS: Infant Space Theory is a substantive theory of infant–toddler interactions with the spaces and objects of the home. This contextualized view of the infant–toddler describes progressions in gaze and visual play, in mapping and ranging home space, in stationary object …

Disciplining Queer, Ian Barnard
Disciplining Queer, Ian Barnard
English Faculty Articles and Research
This article analyzes a particular set of disciplinings by students and colleagues that coalesced around my teaching of a university course in ‘Queer Theory.’ I use these regulatory discourses and practices as a springboard to investigate how academic and other disciplines (English, in particular) enable and reproduce certain stylizations, epistemologies, and methodologies, and what they implicitly and violently conceal and demonize; how style functions as politics and what the politics of style are; how queerness—queer inquiry and intervention, queer methodologies and epistemologies, queer activisms and insubordinations—might activate, exacerbate, and expose some of these questions and mechanisms. The form of the …

Adding Soft-Skills To The Hard Target Of Adequacy: The Case For Rearticulation Based On A Multifocal Analysis, Robert C. Knoeppel, Curtis A. Brewer, Jane Clark Lindle, Patricia F. First
Adding Soft-Skills To The Hard Target Of Adequacy: The Case For Rearticulation Based On A Multifocal Analysis, Robert C. Knoeppel, Curtis A. Brewer, Jane Clark Lindle, Patricia F. First
Publications
The purpose of this study is to expand the definition of adequacy by adding soft skills as a measure of school productivity. The singular focus on academic standards inherent in education policy has prevented scholars from seeing the concept of adequacy through myriad perspectives and has contributed to a resegregation of schools. Education policy includes legal, historical, and political perspectives; research inquiries must accommodate these multiple foci. This study made use of multifocal analysis to investigate the development of the concept of adequacy in South Carolina. Conclusions suggest an expanded definition of adequacy has potential for addressing school financing policy, …

The Role Of Historical-Cultural Formations Within World-Systems Analysis: Reframing The Analysis Of Biomedicine In East Africa, David Baronov
The Role Of Historical-Cultural Formations Within World-Systems Analysis: Reframing The Analysis Of Biomedicine In East Africa, David Baronov
Sociology Faculty/Staff Publications
This essay introduces a novel analytical concept for world-systems analysis, historical-cultural formations, for the purpose of analyzing reciprocal global cultural exchanges across the capitalist world-system. This is done through four basic procedures. First, the perspective of world-systems analysis is adopted for the purpose of analyzing biomedicine in world-historical context and biomedicine itself is re-conceptualized as a historical-cultural formation across a single capitalist world-system. Second, in order to conceptually incorporate historical-cultural formations, the basic analytical framework of world-systems analysis is expanded to include cultural forms as integral features of the capitalist world-system, parallel with economic and political structures. Third, biomedicine is …
A Procedure To Correct Proxy-Reported Weight In The National Health Interview Survey, 1976-2002, Eric N. Reither, Rebecca L. Utz
A Procedure To Correct Proxy-Reported Weight In The National Health Interview Survey, 1976-2002, Eric N. Reither, Rebecca L. Utz
Sociology, Social Work and Anthropology Faculty Publications
Background
Data from the National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) show a larger-than-expected increase in mean BMI between 1996 and 1997. Proxy-reports of height and weight were discontinued as part of the 1997 NHIS redesign, suggesting that the sharp increase between 1996 and 1997 may be artifactual.
Methods
We merged NHIS data from 1976–2002 into a single database consisting of approximately 1.7 million adults aged 18 and over. The analysis consisted of two parts: First, we estimated the magnitude of BMI differences by reporting status (i.e., self-reported versus proxy-reported height and weight). Second, we developed a procedure to correct biases in …
Virtual Kinoeye: Kinetic Camera, Machinima, And Virtual Subjectivity In Second Life, Lori Landay
Virtual Kinoeye: Kinetic Camera, Machinima, And Virtual Subjectivity In Second Life, Lori Landay
The Journal of e-Media Studies
The "virtual kino-eye" of the synthetic camera in a virtual world like Second Life not only realizes the kinetic possibilities imagined by Dziga Vertov for making "machinima" (digital video captured in a virtual world or 3-d game environment), but also is one of the ways through which virtual subjectivity is constructed. Virtual subjectivity is a mode of first-person experience in a virtual world that is founded on a fusion of visual and metaphoric point of view, shaped through "self-design" of the avatar and environment, reinforced and extended through social interaction, known through the avatar body's actions and movements in virtual …
Folklore And The Internet: Vernacular Expression In A Digital World, Trevor J. Blank
Folklore And The Internet: Vernacular Expression In A Digital World, Trevor J. Blank
All USU Press Publications
Folklore and the Internet is a pioneering examination of the folkloric qualities of the World Wide Web, e-mail, and related digital media. It shows that folk culture, sustained by a new and evolving vernacular, has been a key, since the Internetýs beginnings, to language, practice, and interaction online. Users of many sorts continue to develop the Internet as a significant medium for generating, transmitting, documenting, and preserving folklore. In a set of new, insightful essays, contributors Trevor J. Blank, Simon J. Bronner, Robert Dobler, Russell Frank, Gregory Hansen, Robert Glenn Howard, Lynne S. McNeill, Elizabeth Tucker, and William Westerman showcase …

Mea Familia: Ethnic Burial Identifiers In St. Michael's Cemetery, Pensacola, Florida, Amy Giroux
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Grave markers from St. Michael'ss Cemetery in Pensacola, Florida, were studied for evidence of ethnicity and acculturation. The 1,447 grave markers dating from 1870 to 1939 were used to test two hypotheses: 1) the grave markers for ethnic groups represented in the cemetery during the project's time period have identifiable sets of burial attributes; and 2) changes in the visible ethnic attribute sets show evidence of the acculturation of ethnic groups over time. Physical attributes pertaining to grave markers, and personal characteristics (e.g. sex, age) for the individuals inscribed upon the markers were collected for analysis. Historical sources were used …

The Dawn Of The "Chaotic Account": Horatio Hale’S Australia Notebook And The Development Of Anthropologists’ Field Notes, Tom Belton
Western Libraries Publications
This paper proposes an archival analysis of notebooks, and their relationships to other parts of personal archives (e.g. journals or diaries). The bulk of the paper is an analysis of the historical development of a particular genre of notebooks: anthropological field notes, “chaotic accounts”, as Branislaw Manilnowski called them, based largely on observation. It provides a review of anthropologists’ own recent literature on the subject, and a short case study of a mid nineteenth century notebook of the American explorer/ethnographer Horatio Hale that serves as an example of one seed out of which anthropological field notes grew.
Apocalypse In Anime: Shifting Boundaries Of Human Technology Interface, Pauline Morris
Apocalypse In Anime: Shifting Boundaries Of Human Technology Interface, Pauline Morris
Digitized Theses
Anime is the definitive postmodern genre through which to portray apocalyptic narratives as it provides an imaginative liminal site that transcends any specific culture and ethnicity, and through which global concerns can be investigated. The study of apocalypse in selected anime - Japanese animated film and television - is beneficial at the outset o f the 21st century when we are beset with catastrophes both ecological and technological that are recognizably manufactured by some degree of human involvement. This examination is pertinent to disciplines as diverse as communications, cultural theory, anthropology, film, cyborg studies, Asian studies, and English literature. The …

Contested Histories And Identities: Romani Refugees In Toronto, Julianna Calder Butler
Digitized Theses
This thesis examines the larger themes and processes involved in identity reconstructions, and the appropriation of labels and categories at various levels as part of a struggle by the Roma against their marginalization and persecution. Through a focus on several significant sites of negotiation and contestation where Romani actors encounter and interface with hegemonic institutions and discourses, including current Canadian immigration policies and media coverage, I propose that “identities” invoke historical narratives, whether individual or collective, and are used in diverse ways. This research on the Roma is also useful in understanding the experiences of other refugees and minorities when …
Body Size Indicators And The Examination Of Stress From A Growth And Develoment Perspective: A New Method Of Bioarchaeological Assessment, Amy B. Scott
Digitized Theses
The purpose o f this thesis research is to introduce a new method to examine
childhood stress episodes from adult skeletal remains. Through the use of indicators of adult body size and regression analysis, stress patterns were analyzed in two climatically different populations, the Sadlermiut Inuit of Southampton Island and the Sacred Heart Cemetery population from southwestern Ontario. By comparing body size indicators to one another in sequential order, it was possible to assess at what time during growth and development that certain individuals deviated from their normal growth patterns and experienced stress. As expected, the Sadlermiut and Sacred Heart …

The Rusty Years: Seniors’ Social Networking In Retirement, Michelle P. West
The Rusty Years: Seniors’ Social Networking In Retirement, Michelle P. West
Digitized Theses
This thesis investigates how retirees in the Greater Toronto Area experienced the transition from work to retirement and how they dealt with the changes that they experienced. In particular, this work considers how individuals’ social networks are altered during the process of retirement and how individuals develop new social networks in order to adjust to these alterations. Anthropological methods of inquiry—participant- observation, individual interviews, and focus groups—were used to explore these phenomena. The results of this study reveal how recreational centers for seniors, and the programs offered at these centers, help retirees connect to their peers and their communities and …
