Of Mice And Men: Studying Innate And Adaptive Immunity Against The Epstein-Barr Virus, Till Strowig
Of Mice And Men: Studying Innate And Adaptive Immunity Against The Epstein-Barr Virus, Till Strowig
Student Theses and Dissertations
The Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is a lymphotropic γ-herpes virus infecting over 90% of the human adult population. A striking feature that the virus shares with other γ-herpes viruses is its oncogenic potential. This transforming property can be observed as B cell transformation in vitro and lymphomas as well as epithelial cancers in vivo, but most immunocompetent individuals control EBV infection successfully without the occurrence of disease. Cells of the innate immune system act in synergy to provide a first line of defense against pathogens. Here we describe that dendritic cells (DCs), matured with viral products or mimics thereof, activated natural …
Dissecting The Functions Of Classical Cadherins In Skin, Christopher Tinkle
Dissecting The Functions Of Classical Cadherins In Skin, Christopher Tinkle
Student Theses and Dissertations
The spectacular cellular rearrangements of keratinocytes as epidermal appendages form and the epidermis turns over rely on the rapid and precise modulation of intercellular adhesion. While genetic studies in vertebrates have revealed a pivotal role for classical cadherin-mediated cell adhesion in the regulation of coordinated cell movements in the embryo, little is know about the contribution of classical cadherins to epidermal morphogenesis. Genetic dissection of cadherin function in skin is complicated by overlapping expression of E- and P-cadherin and the fact that their genes are tightly linked, precluding conventional conditional knockout strategies. I have combined conditional gene ablation, in vitro …
The Effects Of Dietary Conjugated Linoleic Acid (Cla) On Fatty Acid Composition And Key Enzymes Of Fatty Acid Oxidation In Liver And Muscle Of Geese, Xuhui Zhang, Baowei Wang, Fangyu Long, Lei Wang, Zhigang Yang
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
The objective of this study was to determine the influence of conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) on fatty acid composition and key enzymes of fatty acid oxidation in liver and muscle of geese. A total of 192 1-day-old geese were randomly assigned to 1 of 4 dietary groups, and were fed for 56 days on diets containing 2.5% soybean oil (group A, control group) or 2.0% soybean oil with 0.5% CLA (group B), 1.0% soybean oil with 1.5% CLA (group C), and 2.5 % CLA (group D). Geese fed CLA had a decreased abdominal fat percentage (AFP) (P < 0.01) compared with the control. It was observed that dietary CLA levels had a significant effect on the body weight, weight gain, feed conversion rate (FCR) (P < 0.05), and feed intake (P < 0.01). Fatty acid composition showed a significant increase of the biologically active cis-9, trans-11 and trans-10, and cis-12 CLA isomers in both liver and muscle of geese fed CLA (P < 0.01). Dietary CLA led to an increase (P < 0.01) in saturated fatty acid (SFA) and a reduction in monounsaturated fatty acid (MUFA) (P < 0.05) concentrations in both liver and muscle. In liver, dietary CLA increased (P < 0.05) acyl CoA oxidase (ACO) activity, but did not affect carnitine palmitoyltransferase-I (CPT-I) activity compared with the control. CPT-I activity was significantly increased by 2.5% dietary CLA in muscle, where ACO activity was decreased at 1.5% CLA level. The results obtained suggested that geese can successfully incorporate CLA in both liver and muscle, which could be beneficial in the human diet, through provision of bioactive fatty acids with no detrimental effects on n-3 PUFA levels.

Germs On A Plane: Legal Protections Afforded To International Air Travelers And Governments In The Event Of A Suspected Or Actual Contagious Passenger And Proposals To Strengthen Them, Alexandra R. Harrington
Journal of Law and Health
This article calls for the creation of an international public health do-not-fly list akin to those used by Interpol and the United States government as a stop-gap measure to ensure that passengers who have been diagnosed with infectious diseases or have been exposed to infectious diseases are unable to travel until it is established that it is medically safe for them to do so. This article has also called for amendments to the IHR and the Vienna Conventions to clarify the rights and obligations of travelers and states in the event of a suspected or established case of infectious disease …

Comparative Research in Law & Political Economy
After the terrorist attacks of 11 September 2001 terrorism was added to the list of potentially catastrophic global events, such as global warming or nuclear explosions, which characterise Ulrich Beck's risk society. Operating in an atmosphere of fear, executive governments and parliaments around the world take precautionary measures to prevent future terrorist acts - governments accumulate information, detain terrorism suspects, freeze funds and so on. International Relations scholars see the judiciary as a guardian of human rights that can stop or at least curb the excesses of the other two branches of government. The article argues that this view is …
Polygamy's Inscrutable Secular Mischief, Susan G. Drummond
Polygamy's Inscrutable Secular Mischief, Susan G. Drummond
Comparative Research in Law & Political Economy
This paper attempts to decipher the specific mischief in the offense of polygamy in-and-of-itself. It examines whether the offense coincides any longer with the contemporary substratum of values about the family and sexuality that have emerged over the last forty years in Canadian law and society. The relevance of formal conjugality - triggered by marriage, extinguished by divorce, and shielded in-between by privacy - has been turned inside/out by the sociological and legal significance of functional conjugality. For the latter construct the content of intimate and familial relationships has become a substitute focus of legal scrutiny. Meanwhile, the contemporary range …
Judicial Independence As A Public Policy Instrument, Adam M. Dodek
Judicial Independence As A Public Policy Instrument, Adam M. Dodek
Comparative Research in Law & Political Economy
The participation of judges in commissions of inquiry has been an important part of the public policy process in Canada and elsewhere. However, the use of judges for these and other extra-judicial functions is not wholly positive and the other side of the balance must be considered as well. This paper chronicles the dramatic rise of the use of judges by governments for such policy functions, arguing that it has resulted in a 'judicialization of politics' of a different sort from the standard conception of that term. The current political culture of independence and accountability has made judicial independence a …
Shareholder Engagement In The Embedded Business Corporation: Investment Activism, Human Rights And Twail Discourse, Aaron A. Dhir
Shareholder Engagement In The Embedded Business Corporation: Investment Activism, Human Rights And Twail Discourse, Aaron A. Dhir
Comparative Research in Law & Political Economy
The expansion of Canadian extractive corporations' overseas business operations has led to serious concerns regarding human rights-related impacts. As these apprehensions grow, we see a countervailing rise in calls for government intervention and in levels of socially conscious shareholder advocacy. I focus on the latter as manifested in recent use of the shareholder proposal mechanism found in Canadian corporate law. Shareholder proposals, while under-theorized, provide a valuable lens through which to consider the argument that economic behaviour is embedded within social relations. In doing so, I situate my analysis within Third World Approaches to International Law (TWAIL) scholarship. Elsewhere, I …
The Law School, The Market, And The New Knowledge Economy, Margaret Thornton
The Law School, The Market, And The New Knowledge Economy, Margaret Thornton
Comparative Research in Law & Political Economy
This paper considers how recent changes in higher education are impacting on the discipline of law, causing the critical scholarly space to contract in favour of that which is market-based and applied. The charging of high fees has transformed the delicate relationship between student and teacher into one of ‘customer’ and ‘service provider’. Changes in pedagogy, modes of delivery and assessment have all contributed to the narrowing of the curriculum in a way that supports the market. The paper will briefly illustrate the way the transformation has occurred and consider its effect on legal education and the legal academy.

Ict In Legal Education, Antoinette Muntjewerff
Comparative Research in Law & Political Economy
Reforming legal higher education involves organisational aspects as well as aspects on learning and instruction. We focus on the learning and instruction part of education and also make a restriction for institutionalized learning and instruction, that is, learning and instruction that takes place within the context of a school or university. Instruction should aim at enhancing effective and efficient learning, that is the acquisition of knowledge and skills in the field or subject area at stake. Instruction involves presentation of learning materials and presentation of support in processing these materials. Technology can be used in instruction to support both the …
'Transnational Law' As Proto‐Concept: Three Conceptions, Craig Scott
'Transnational Law' As Proto‐Concept: Three Conceptions, Craig Scott
Comparative Research in Law & Political Economy
The purpose of this article is to identify three understandings of transnational law, all of which have a certain integrity depending on one’s premises about the nature and institutional operation of law. The approach adopted is not to make an argument for the single best reading of the concept of transnational law but instead to outline three candidate conceptions of that notion. For purposes of the article, these conceptions are not assumed necessarily to be competing conceptions. Rather, their potential compatibility is left open for future consideration. In this sense, 'transnational law' is presented in the article as a kind …

The Association Of Transnational Law Schools’ Agora: An Experiment In Graduate Legal Pedagogy, Phillip G. Bevans, John Mckay
Comparative Research in Law & Political Economy
The Association of Transnational Law Schools [ATLAS] is a consortium of law schools from around the world that launched an annual academic summer program, called the Agora, for doctoral students in July of 2008. The authors outline the history of the creation of the program, describe it, and consider its significance as it relates to the changing landscape of legal practice and pedagogy. The Agora both reflects and furthers a trend in legal scholarship, and as a consequence legal education, toward a focus on a set of interrelated concerns, which include globalization, international governance, transnational law, comparative legal studies, legal …

The Contribution Of Campbell V. Zimbabwe To The Foreign Investment Law On Expropriations, Dunia Zongwe
Comparative Research in Law & Political Economy
Since 2000, the Zimbabwean government has expropriated a string of white-owned commercial lands. In March 2008, in a consolidated case (Mike Campbell (Pvt) Ltd and Others v. Zimbabwe), 79 applicants filed an application with the Southern African Development Community Tribunal (SADC Tribunal) to challenge the legality of the acquisition of certain agricultural lands by the Zimbabwean government. On 28 November 2008, the Tribunal ruled that the expropriations of agricultural lands by the Zimbabwean government were illegal because they were based on racial discrimination and did not compensate the applicants. This paper seeks to understand the contribution that the Campbell case …

A New Originalism: Adoption Of A Grammatical Interpretive Approach To Establishment Clause Jurisprudence After District Of Columbia V. Helle, Christopher A. Boyko
Cleveland State Law Review
This thesis proposes an approach to Establishment Clause jurisprudence (and one applicable to constitutional interpretation as a whole) that maintains fidelity to the Constitution by confining the application and interpretation of explicit text to the strictures of well-established norms of grammar and usage. It will begin by analyzing the disparities created through the addition or substitution of super-textual language to the clause through the use of surrogate concepts, and will demonstrate that any such method of constitutional adjudication becomes unworkable and incoherent once such tests utilize surrogate concepts and terminology. Through grammatical exegesis will emerge the theory that the Religion …

Cognitive Preference And Ethnic Identity Among Anglo And Native American High School Students, Chad Martin Novak
Cognitive Preference And Ethnic Identity Among Anglo And Native American High School Students, Chad Martin Novak
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
According to the Office of Educational Research and Improvement: A Project of the Stanford Institute for Higher Education Research, graduation rates for Native Americans from both secondary and post secondary institutions are dismally low at 58% and 7%, respectively. Some research addresses cognitive preference and other ethnic identity, but research animating the cognitive preference---ethnic identity interplay for high school students is absent. These limitations in access to educational opportunities lead to abbreviated quality life experiences and a restriction in individual efficacy and collective agency. The following project assessed ethnic identity using Phinney's Multigroup Ethnic Identity Measure and cognitive preference using …
Perceptions Of Leadership Effectiveness In The Management Of Intergenerational Work-Values Conflict: An Antecedent Of Organizational Citizenship Behavior Of Perioperative Registered Nurses, Patricia G. Wright
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Studies reveal a progressive net decrease in the nursing profession across four generations, creating a shortage that poses a critical threat to the health care delivery system and to the health and safety of patients within that system. Research also suggests that generational cohorts reflect social change in attitudes toward work-life balance, organizational commitment, personal-professional relationships, autonomy, focus on career advancement, and actions that represent organizational citizenship behavior (OCB). Previous research grounded in theoretical frameworks of organizational behavior, leadership, and social capital indicates that leadership support of workforce diversity and effectiveness in conflict management influence OCB. However, little research explores …

A Mixed Methods Study Of Secondary Distance-Learning Students: Exploring Learning Styles, Jennifer M. Roberts
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Public education in the United States has experienced an increase in distance-learning (DL) opportunities. Because research has focused on student achievement in post-secondary DL programs, little is known about secondary students' experiences. The purpose of the current study was to explore DL applicability within secondary education. Specific research questions addressed by the concurrent mixed methods nested study included examining students' opinions and experiences in a secondary DL course and determining whether individual learning styles were addressed. Structured interviews, group discussions, and a survey were used to gather data over 2 months from 14 students in grades 9 through 12 participating …

The purpose of this research was to examine factors that influence the success of community based marine protected areas in North Sulawesi Indonesia. The research took place in North Sulawesi Province of Indonesia. A multi-methods approach was used including administration of a survey questionnaire to a random sample of household respondents, use of secondary data, key informant interviews and direct observations within the field sites. Results demonstrate that community-based management interventions and community responses are complex and varied. Progress in establishing community-based marine protected areas was related to community context and the amount and type of project interventions provided. The …
Examining The Effects Of Early Life Stress From Maternal Separation On Measures Of Pain And Anxiety, Megan Lynne Uhelski
Examining The Effects Of Early Life Stress From Maternal Separation On Measures Of Pain And Anxiety, Megan Lynne Uhelski
Psychology Theses - Archive
Animal models of stress-induced conditions have provided important insight into the physiological mechanisms of many chronic disorders. Models of early life stress involve procedures designed to induce prenatal or postnatal stress upon pups, which produces adult rats with enhanced stress responses and behavioral similarities to animal models of schizophrenia, anxiety, and depression. Since little research has focused on the effect of maternal separation on adult pain processing, the purpose of the current study is to examine both sensory and affective pain measures in adult rats following repeated maternal separation in infancy, a common model of early life stress. Eighty-six male …

A Novel Device For The Establishment Of An Animal Model Mimicking Spinal Deformity Surgery For Neurological Deficit Risk Mitigation, Bradley Elmer
Bioengineering Theses - Archive
Correction forces during spine deformity surgery impart significant multidirectional stress forces to the spinal cord, which in some cases result in severe damage to the spinal cord and permanent paralysis, the most feared complication. Animal models are critical for the development of neuroprotective strategies. However, those currently available are limited to contusion, transection, or unidirectional distraction injuries, which fail to replicate the multidirectional forces that occur during spine corrective surgery. In order to develop an improved model of distraction spinal cord injury we designed a device based on intervertebral grip fixation and linear actuators, capable of inducing controllable bidirectional distraction …

In my optical spectroscopy study, multi-channel, thin optical probes with short source-detector separation have been implemented, calibrated, and used along with a multi-channel spectrometer as a quantitative technique to observe changes in vascular hemoglobin concentration and hemoglobin oxygen saturation as well as light scattering of tissues. Each of the four needle probes used in my study consists of two bifurcated fibers; one fiber is connected to a halogen light source and the other fiber to a CCD-array spectrometer having a spectral window from 450 nm to 900 nm. Each fiber is 100 micron in diameter. As we utilized the four …

Japan's New Criminal Jury Trial System: In Need Of More Transparency, More Access, And More Time, Matthew J. Wilson
Fordham International Law Journal
The lay judge system has considerable potential both in concept and form. To realize its full potential, the system needs to overcome various structural impediments and cultural challenges. This Article further contributes to the emerging discussion by detailing three related areas that merit attention and reform if the system is going to realize its full potential. Namely, the lay judge system would benefit from 1) increased transparency by eliminating punitive measures against citizen judges desiring to freely speak about the trial proceedings or deliberation process oncle the trial is complete; 2) impoved access to the interrogation of detained suspects and …
