Sex For Dinner, Death For Breakfast: James Bond And The Body, Brian A. Dixon Jan 2009

Sex For Dinner, Death For Breakfast: James Bond And The Body, Brian A. Dixon

Open Access Dissertations

This study is concerned with the literature, films, artwork, and advertising associated with Ian Fleming's James Bond 007 and examines various representations of the human body that play an integral role in his adventures. For Fleming, the body is simultaneously a site of secrecy, revelation, contact, and exposition presaging the future of politics, culture, sexuality, and consumption. The various accoutrements that are common to the 007 adventures--including elaborate references to fashion, food and drink, sex, and methods of execution--accentuate and attune this focus. An examination of these elements and their bodily referents serves to reveal the extent to which these …

Milking The Umbilical Cord At Term Cesarean Section: Effect On Hemoglobin Levels In The First 48 Hours Of Life, Debra A. Erickson-Owens Jan 2009

Milking The Umbilical Cord At Term Cesarean Section: Effect On Hemoglobin Levels In The First 48 Hours Of Life, Debra A. Erickson-Owens

Open Access Dissertations

New evidence suggests immediate clamping of the umbilical cord may contribute to anemia of infancy. It can deprive a full-term infant of 25% of its blood volume, representing up to 50 mg/kg of iron. Poor iron stores can affect the developing brain. Immediate clamping is routine at cesarean section but lacks scientific evidence. Delayed clamping for two minutes can reduce anemia but is not always feasible at cesarean section. Cord milking may offer an alternative at cesarean section for the prevention of anemia. This pilot study, a partially-blinded randomized controlled trial, compared immediate clamping and cord milking in full-term infants …

A Biochemical Study On The Regulation Of The Src And Fgfr Family Of Protein Tyrosine Kinases, David J. Kemble Jan 2009

A Biochemical Study On The Regulation Of The Src And Fgfr Family Of Protein Tyrosine Kinases, David J. Kemble

Open Access Dissertations

The Src and FGFR family of protein tyrosine kinases (PTKs) are key mammalian enzymes in signal transduction. Regulating their enzymatic activity is imperative and disrupting this regulation can lead to devastating outcomes, including cancer. Our primary focus is to dissect the structure-function relationship that guides the regulation of PTKs. In this study we used site directed mutageneis, bacterial expression, and kinetic analysis to investigate how Src and FGFR PTKS is regulated by Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) and autophosphorylation. Accumulating evidence suggests that protein tyrosine phosphorylation-based pathways are under the regulation of Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS). Although protein tyrosine phosphatases are …

Alternative Conceptions Of Introductory Geoscience Students And A Method To Decrease Them, Karen Melissa Kortz Jan 2009

Alternative Conceptions Of Introductory Geoscience Students And A Method To Decrease Them, Karen Melissa Kortz

Open Access Dissertations

College students often leave introductory geoscience courses with alternative conceptions, and these alternative conceptions are a barrier to their grasp of geological conceptions. This dissertation clarifies the problem and suggests pedagogical strategies for correcting it. It is an integration of research on students' conceptions of geoscience topics with the application of that knowledge to the development of materials to change these conceptions to be more scientifically accurate. This research identifies and documents alternative conceptions students have in several key geoscience topics and the consequences of these alternative conception in terms of preventing understanding. After documenting the alternative conceptions, I investigate …

Assessing Essential Fish Habitat And Connectivity Using Otolith Chemistry And Growth Of Temperate And Tropical Fish, Ivan Mateo Jan 2009

Assessing Essential Fish Habitat And Connectivity Using Otolith Chemistry And Growth Of Temperate And Tropical Fish, Ivan Mateo

Open Access Dissertations

Many shallow water habitats are vulnerable to loss or deterioration from a variety of processes, including erosion, pollution, and urbanization. Conservation of these 'nursery' habitats protects an important source of young individuals to offshore adult fish populations. The first part of this dissertation investigates whether young-of-the year (YOY) tautog Tautoga onitis, French grunt Haemulon flavolineatum, and schoolmaster Lutjanus apodus from different nursery habitats can be distinguished by chemical signatures in their otoliths. Concentrations of ten elements, as well as stable oxygen (18O) and carbon (13C) isotopes, were determined in otoliths. Chemical signatures differed significantly among fish from different nurseries (MANOVA …

Conservation Genetics Of Association Of Zoos And Aquariums And Wild Matshie's Tree Kangaroo (Dendrolagus Matschiei) From Huon Peninsula, Papua New Guinea, Thomas Joseph Mcgreevy Jr. Jan 2009

Conservation Genetics Of Association Of Zoos And Aquariums And Wild Matshie's Tree Kangaroo (Dendrolagus Matschiei) From Huon Peninsula, Papua New Guinea, Thomas Joseph Mcgreevy Jr.

Open Access Dissertations

The Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) Matschie's tree kangaroo (Dendrolagus matschiei) population is at a critical point for assessing long-term viability; they have endured a founder effect and have low mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) diversity. The mean kinship (MK) strategy is used to preserve their genetic diversity by minimizing the overall kinship of the population; however, the MK strategy has not been evaluated in an AZA population. Wild D. matschiei is listed as endangered and genetically unique populations may warrant management as separate conservation units. My objectives were to: (i) develop molecular markers to facilitate genetic analyses, (ii) assist AZA …

A Validation Study Of The Misbehaviors Questionnaire, Racheal Taki Reavy Jan 2009

A Validation Study Of The Misbehaviors Questionnaire, Racheal Taki Reavy

Open Access Dissertations

This study examined the validity of the Misbehaviors Questionnaire (MBQ), a revision of the Self Report Delinquency scale, which aims to diagnose conduct disorder (CD) and to serve as a valid measure for assessing misbehaviors. The MBQ further assesses whether each misbehavior involved the use of alcohol or marijuana, allowing for comparisons of substance-related clusters of misbehaviors. Participants were 190 incarcerated adolescents (85.8% male; average age 17 years) at a juvenile correctional facility in the Northeast. While incarcerated, they were asked about substance use and misbehaviors in the three months prior to incarceration, as well as parental, peer, and demographic …

The Use Of Cnidarian Nematocysts By The Aeolidian Nudibranch Cratena Pilata, Sarah Fogg-Matarese Jan 2009

The Use Of Cnidarian Nematocysts By The Aeolidian Nudibranch Cratena Pilata, Sarah Fogg-Matarese

Open Access Dissertations

Nudibranchs feed on anemones and hydroid polyps. The ingested cnidarian nematocysts are stored in cerata, dorsal extensions of the gut, and used to defend against predatation. Specialized smooth muscle sacs in the cerata, the cnidosacs, contain modified epithelial cells, the cnidophages, that hold the nematocysts. Light microscopic and behavioral studies indicate that, upon adequate stimulation, the cnidosac and cerata contract, opening the ceras tip and releasing the stored nematocysts. Ultra-thin sections revealed that the smooth muscle cells of the ceras encompass a network of caveolae and that synaptic terminals containing dense-cored and clear vesicles impinge on the muscles of the …

"All The World's A Stage": (Re)Familiarizing Shakespeare: A Study Of Romeo And Juliet In The East And The West, Beau La Rhee

Open Access Dissertations

This study analyzes William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet (1596) and his Globe Theater as well as John Gielgud's (1935), Peter Brook's (1947), and Tae-Suk Oh's (2005 and 2006) adaptation of it to explore how the play is retold, reinterpreted, and brought alive for new audiences through different cultures and through the theater of today. As the acclaimed western directors, the Korean director Tae-Suk Oh accurately interprets Shakespearean devices in the source text and employs methodologies drawn from his own culture as well as Elizabethan culture. He effectively relates the world of the play to the world of the audience through …

Overwintering Ecology Of Young-Of-The-Year Winter Flounder In Narragansett Bay, Rhode Island, Richard James Bell Jan 2009

Overwintering Ecology Of Young-Of-The-Year Winter Flounder In Narragansett Bay, Rhode Island, Richard James Bell

Open Access Dissertations

Winter flounder is an important commercial and recreational species and was once one of the most abundant fish in Narragansett Bay. The stock declined in the mid-1980s paralleling a similar trend throughout southern New England and has shown very little, if any, recovery. Many strong age-0 year-classes failed to survive to age-1 or older and work has indicated that a mortality bottleneck occurs sometime after the summer of the first year of life. This study investigated the diet, lipid content, growth, mortality and distribution of YOY winter flounder during the winter. YOY winter flounder were found to eat throughout the …

The Relationship Between Assistive Technology State Standards For Teachers, Assistive Technology Implementation, And Student Performance In The Context Of Evidence-Based Practice, Elizabeth Minchin Dalton

Open Access Dissertations

Purpose: Consideration of assistive technology (AT) for special education students has been federally mandated since 1997. Since the 2002 No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB), rigorous evidence-based educational practices are also mandated. While national technology standards for teachers in general education exist to guide educational technology (ET), it is not clear if AT standards exist for U.S. teachers, or on what evidence standards are based. The purposes of this study, therefore , were to 1) describe three state-level regulatory elements related to AT: i) presence of formally adopted AT standards , ii) level of scientific evidence supporting those standards and …

Domestication And Significance Of Persea Americana, The Avocado, In Mesoamerica, Amanda J. Landon Jan 2009

Domestication And Significance Of Persea Americana, The Avocado, In Mesoamerica, Amanda J. Landon

Nebraska Anthropologist

The avocado (persea americana) is grown all over the modern world in tropical and subtropical climates for food and cosmetics (Humani 1987). In antiquity, the avocado was important to the Ancient Maya not only for food but also as a part of their mythology. Avocados were grown in sacred gardens, and important ancestors were thought to become reborn through fruit trees, including the avocado. Here, I examine the cultural context of the avocado and the issues related to understanding the domestication of the avocado and other tropical fruit trees. I discuss archaeological and molecular evidence, and offer direction …

A Preliminary Survey Of Lesser-Known Polyandrous Societies, Katie Starkweather Jan 2009

A Preliminary Survey Of Lesser-Known Polyandrous Societies, Katie Starkweather

Nebraska Anthropologist

To challenge the common misconception that there are only four societies in the world that allow polyandry, this paper uses types of polyandry, suggested by Levine and Sangree (1980), to identify polyandrous societies from India, Africa, South America, and North America. Basic issues of these societies are examined within the context of four commonly cited attempts to explain the existence of polyandry. The goal of the paper is a preliminary look at the existence of polyandry around the world and an initial exploration of issues that mayor may not be associated with this form of marriage.

Diagramming Tpack In Practice: Using An Elaborated Model Of The Tpack Framework To Analyze And Depict Teacher Knowledge, Suzy Cox, Charles R. Graham Jan 2009

Diagramming Tpack In Practice: Using An Elaborated Model Of The Tpack Framework To Analyze And Depict Teacher Knowledge, Suzy Cox, Charles R. Graham

Faculty Publications

The introduction of the TPACK model by Mishra and Koehler (2006) has had a profound impact on the field of educational technology. It has inspired teachers, teacher educators, and educational technologists to reevaluate their knowledge and use of technology in the classroom. While Koehler, Mishra, and others have attempted to define and measure TPACK, the framework is not yet fully understood (Angeli & Valanides, 2009). Thus far, the explanations of technological pedagogical content knowledge and its associated constructs that have been provided are not clear enough for researchers to agree on what is and is not an example of each …

Cheney, Vice Presidential Power And The War On Terror, Joel K. Goldstein Jan 2009

Cheney, Vice Presidential Power And The War On Terror, Joel K. Goldstein

All Faculty Scholarship

It is generally conceded that Vice President Cheney has been our most influential vice president. During his two terms, the office assumed a significance which his predecessors, even those who themselves were quite significant, would not have thought possible. Whereas historically the vice presidency had been dismissed as too feeble, the Cheney vice presidency was attacked as too robust.

The unprecedented power of Cheney as vice president had many sources. One of them was the war on terror. It, of course, assumed an unexpected prominence after 9/11, and the war on terror contributed to Cheney’s ascendance and provided the political …

Leaving The Thicket At Last?, Luis Fuentes-Rohwer, Laura Jane Durfee Jan 2009

Leaving The Thicket At Last?, Luis Fuentes-Rohwer, Laura Jane Durfee

Articles by Maurer Faculty

Across the spectrum of ideas debated within the law of democracy, the view is nearly unanimous that the Justices must lead the way toward a better democracy. And yet, as we argue in this Essay, the Court’s handling of the problems since its initial intervention in Baker v. Carr has been nothing short of a mess. Debates in this area offer modern instances of a Court that cares little about doctrinal consistency and judicial craftsmanship, of Justices that care less about compromise and common ground and more about expressing their deeply held views about politics, democracy, and the law. In …

Pushkin And Gannibal: Ethnic Identity In Imperial Russia, Miriam Grinberg Jan 2009

Pushkin And Gannibal: Ethnic Identity In Imperial Russia, Miriam Grinberg

The Gettysburg Historical Journal

Since his untimely death in 1837, the nineteenth-century romantic writer Alexander Sergeevich Pushkin has been renowned the world over not only for his literary achievements, but also for being a paradigm of "Russianness." However, Pushkin himself was by no means a "pure" Russian. Like many of the inhabitants of the Russian empire during his time, he was borne of a veritable hodgepodge of ethnicities. The most surprising of these is his African ancestry; his great-grandfather, Abram Petrovich Gannibal, was an African slave brought to Russia in the early eighteenth century. Remarkably, this same slave became the godson and close confidante …

Sweet Tooth For Empire: Sugar And The British Atlantic World, Colin Walfield Jan 2009

Sweet Tooth For Empire: Sugar And The British Atlantic World, Colin Walfield

The Gettysburg Historical Journal

With increasing productivity and rising standards of living, a new spirit of consumerism reached Britain. After its entry into the Atlantic World economy, though Scotland never fully benefited until the 1707 Act of Union, all classes eventually gained access to a wide variety and exotic assortment of consumer products. Among them, sugar, valued for its sweetness since the Middle Ages, maintained a special position, dominating all exports from British America. Embraced by the British populace, sugar provided an impetus for colonization and required imported African labor. Sugar and a newfound consumerism at home drove the British Atlantic World.

Assessment Of Social Anxiety In Early Childhood: Initial Test Construction And *Validation., Daniel B. Chorney Jan 2009

Assessment Of Social Anxiety In Early Childhood: Initial Test Construction And *Validation., Daniel B. Chorney

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Social anxiety is experienced across the lifespan, with many individuals reporting symptoms of anxiety and shyness from a very early age in childhood. A number of measures have been designed to assess social anxiety in children, adolescents, and adults, yet little attention has been focused on children below 8 years of age. While some debate exists concerning children's ability to reliably report symptoms of anxiety in early childhood, recent research has indicated that accurate data can be obtained if the measures utilized are developmentally sensitive and not simply downward extensions of measures used to examine social anxiety in adults. Obtaining …

Carnal Excess: Flesh At The Limits Of Imagination, Virginia Burrus Jan 2009

Carnal Excess: Flesh At The Limits Of Imagination, Virginia Burrus

Religion - All Scholarship

This essay explores representations of fleshly excess in Christian and Jewish texts of the late fourth and fifth centuries, from the cosmically-scaled figures of Adam and the resurrected Christ in Genesis Rabbah and Augustine's City of God, on the one hand, to the hagiographical portraits of fat rabbis and monks in the tractate Baba Metsia of the Babylonian Talmud and the Lausiac History of Palladius, on the other. The Platonic figure of the khora is initially invoked to frame two main arguments: first, that these late ancient texts discover transcendence within, rather than outside of, the boundlessness of materiality; …
