Sex Change And The Genetic Structure Of Marine Fish Populations, Julien Chopelet, Robin Waples, Stefano Mariani Jan 2009

Sex Change And The Genetic Structure Of Marine Fish Populations, Julien Chopelet, Robin Waples, Stefano Mariani

United States Department of Commerce: Staff Publications

The interaction between environmental forces and dispersal characteristics is largely responsible for the patterns of population structure in marine fish. Yet, crucial gaps in knowledge on life-histories and the relative contributions of numerous environmental factors still hinder a thorough understanding of marine population connectivity. One life-history trait so far overlooked by most fish population geneticists is sequential hermaphroditism, whereby individuals first mature as one sex and later in life reverse into the other sex. Population genetic theory predicts that sex-changing fish will present a higher potential for more spatially structured populations than gonochoristic species, as a result of their naturally …

Quantifying Equid Behavior—A Research Ethogram For Free-Roaming Feral Horses, Jason I. Ransom, Brian S. Cade Jan 2009

Quantifying Equid Behavior—A Research Ethogram For Free-Roaming Feral Horses, Jason I. Ransom, Brian S. Cade

United States Geological Survey: Publications

Feral horses (Equus caballus) are globally distributed in free-roaming populations on all continents except Antarctica and occupy a wide range of habitats including forest, grassland, desert, and montane environments. The largest populations occur in Australia and North America and have been the subject of scientific study for decades, yet guidelines and ethograms for feral horse behavioral research are largely absent in the scientific literature. The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Fort Collins Science Center conducted research on the influences of the immunocontraceptive porcine zona pellucida (PZP) on feral horse behavior from 2003–2006 in three discrete populations in the American …

Climate Change And Water Resources Management: A Federal Perspective, Levi D. Brekke, Julie E. Kiang, J. Rolf Olsen, Roger S. Pulwarty, David A. Raff, D. Phil Turnipseed, Robert S. Webb, Kathleen D. White Jan 2009

Climate Change And Water Resources Management: A Federal Perspective, Levi D. Brekke, Julie E. Kiang, J. Rolf Olsen, Roger S. Pulwarty, David A. Raff, D. Phil Turnipseed, Robert S. Webb, Kathleen D. White

United States Geological Survey: Publications

Many challenges, including climate change, face the Nation’s water managers. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has provided estimates of how climate may change, but more understanding of the processes driving the changes, the sequences of the changes, and the manifestation of these global changes at different scales could be beneficial. Since the changes will likely affect fundamental drivers of the hydrological cycle, climate change may have a large impact on water resources and water resources managers.

The purpose of this interagency report prepared by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), Bureau of Reclamation …

Structured Decision Making As A Conceptual Framework To Identify Thresholds For Conservation And Management, Julien Martin, Michael C. Runge, James D. Nichols, Bruce C. Lubow, William L. Kendall2 Jan 2009

Structured Decision Making As A Conceptual Framework To Identify Thresholds For Conservation And Management, Julien Martin, Michael C. Runge, James D. Nichols, Bruce C. Lubow, William L. Kendall2

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

Threshold and their relevance to conservation have become a major topic of discussion in the ecological literature. Unfortunately, in many cases the lack of a clear conceptual framework for thinking about thresholds in terms of a structured decision making process. The purpose of this framework is to promote a logical and transparent process for making informed decisions for conservation.

Specification of such a framework leads naturally to consideration of definitions and roles of different kinds of thresholds in the process. We distinguish among three categories of thresholds. Ecological thresholds are values of system state variables at which small changes bring …

Behavior And Reproductive Success Of Rock Sandpipers Breeding On The Yukon-Kuskokwim River Delta, Alaska, Matthew Johnson, Jesse R. Conklin, Branden L. Johnson, Brian J. Mccaffery, Susan M. Haig, Jeffrey R. Walters

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

We studied Rock Sandpiper (Calidris ptilocnemis) breeding behavior and monitored reproductive success from 1998 to 2005 on the Yukon-Kuskokwim River Delta, Alaska, USA. We banded 24 adults and monitored 45 nests. Annual return rate of adults ranged between 67 and 100%. Six pairs of Rock Sandpipers bred at our study site for ≥ 2 years, and among these we did not observe mate change (i.e., when both members of a pair returned and each mated with a new individual). Nests were typically initiated by mid-May and 53% of females laid second clutches if first clutches were lost through …

Because of the global distribution of hantaviruses, the historical association of …

Chipless Rfid Sensor Tag System With Microstrip Transmissionline Based Id Generation Schemes, Sudhir Shrestha Jan 2009

Chipless Rfid Sensor Tag System With Microstrip Transmissionline Based Id Generation Schemes, Sudhir Shrestha

Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation presents a chipless radio frequency identification (RFID) sensor tag system consisting of passive chipless RFID sensor tags and specialized reader. The chipless sensor tags are fabricated on a flexible substrate and contain an ID generation circuit, a sensor, and a microstrip antenna. The ID generation circuit consists of meandered microstrip transmission lines and uses a novel reflection and delay based ID generation scheme. The scheme, using an input RF pulse, constructs an on-off keying (OOK) or pulse position modulated (PPM) signal pattern representing a unique ID code. Two transmission lines and OOK representation are used and the generation …

Fender Bender: 3d Computer Modeling Of Commercial Objects And The Meshwerks V. Toyota Decision, 8 J. Marshall Rev. Intell. Prop. L. 429 (2009), Andrew C. Landsman

UIC Review of Intellectual Property Law

The Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals established a standard of originality for three-dimensional wireframe computer models for purposes of copyright protection in Meshwerks, Inc. v. Toyota Motor Sales USA, Inc. The court applied the standard of originality used by courts when assessing the originality of photographs. In doing so, the court created a test for wireframes that precludes any wireframe from acquiring copyright protection. This comment proposes that courts reconsider the holding in Meshwerks and treat wireframes as sculptures rather than photographs, which would allow wireframes to be copyrightable.

Proveris Scientific Corp. V. Innovasystems, Inc. Sinks Safe Harbor Protection For Research Tools, 8 J. Marshall Rev. Intell. Prop. L. 452 (2009), Erin M. Mckibben

UIC Review of Intellectual Property Law

The use of research tools is critical for pharmaceutical companies to conduct timely and efficient research in the development of new drugs. Traditionally, the use of all patented inventions during drug development that are reasonably related to submission of information to the Food and Drug Administration for regulatory review has been protected under the section 271(e)(1) safe harbor provision. Recently, the Federal Circuit narrowed the scope of the safe harbor provision excluding the use of certain patented research tools. The effect of this decision on research tools may negatively impact the public by raising the cost of pharmaceutical companies’ research …

Cloning And Expression Of Aquaporin In The Antennal Gland Of Crayfish, Procambarus Clarkii, Yang Gao Jan 2009

Cloning And Expression Of Aquaporin In The Antennal Gland Of Crayfish, Procambarus Clarkii, Yang Gao

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Aquaporins (AQPs) are responsible for transferring water and other small molecules across the cell membrane. Relatively little research has been conducted on AQPs in crustaceans. To study the AQPs in crayfish, I hypothesis that 1) AQP is expressed in the antennal gland (kidney analogue) of crayfish; 2) crayfish AQP will show greater expression in tissues (gill and antennal gland) associated with volume regulation; 3) AQP mRNA expression in antennal gland and gill will increase in premolt and decrease in postmolt compared with intermolt level. RT-PCR and Real-time PCR assay were applied to test the hypothesis. A partial AQP gene was …

Characterizing Lessons Learned From Federal Biomass Removal Projects, Dennia R. Becker, Dalia Abbas, Kathleen E. Halvorsen, Pamela J. Jakes, Sarah M. Mccaffrey, Cassandra Moseley Jan 2009

Characterizing Lessons Learned From Federal Biomass Removal Projects, Dennia R. Becker, Dalia Abbas, Kathleen E. Halvorsen, Pamela J. Jakes, Sarah M. Mccaffrey, Cassandra Moseley

Joint Fire Science Program Research Project Reports

The idea of offsetting the costs of wildfire hazardous fuels reduction treatments by selling the biomass removed is appealing. There are however challenges to biomass utilization that impedes progress. For instance, the lack of biomass processing capacity may impede progress in some regions, while in other regions an inconsistent supply of biomass available for wood products markets limits private investment. Despite efforts to increase biomass utilization, uncertainty exists of regarding the characteristics necessary to stimulate biomass utilization, effectiveness of agency and local efforts, and the role of partnerships in building the types of capacity necessary to expedite biomass removal. The …

Synthesis Of Knowledge On The Effects Of Fire And Fire Surrogates On Wildlife In U.S. Dry Forests, Patricia L. Kennedy, Joseph B. Fontaine Jan 2009

Synthesis Of Knowledge On The Effects Of Fire And Fire Surrogates On Wildlife In U.S. Dry Forests, Patricia L. Kennedy, Joseph B. Fontaine

Joint Fire Science Program Research Project Reports

Dry forests throughout the United States are fire-dependent ecosystems, and much attention has been given to restoring their ecological function. As such, land managers often are tasked with reintroducing fire via prescribed fire, wildland fire use, and fire-surrogate treatments such as thinning and mastication. During planning, managers frequently are expected to anticipate effects of management actions on wildlife species. This document represents a synthesis of existing knowledge on wildlife responses to fire and fire-surrogate treatments, presented in a useful, management-relevant format. Based on scoping meetings and dialogue with public lands managers from throughout the United States, we provide detailed, species-level, …

Ecological Effects Of Prescribed Fire Season: A Literature Review And Synthesis For Managers, Eric Knapp, Becky Estes, Carl N. Skinner Jan 2009

Ecological Effects Of Prescribed Fire Season: A Literature Review And Synthesis For Managers, Eric Knapp, Becky Estes, Carl N. Skinner

Joint Fire Science Program Research Project Reports

Prescribed burning may be conducted at times of the year when fires were infrequent historically, leading to concerns about potential adverse effects on vegetation and wildlife. Historical and prescribed fire regimes for different regions in the continental United States were compared and literature on season of prescribed burning synthesized. In regions and vegetation types where considerable differences in fuel consumption exist among burning seasons, the effects of prescribed fire season appears, for many ecological variables, to be driven more by fire-intensity differences among seasons than by phenology or growth stage of organisms at the time of fire. Where fuel consumption …

Conversion Of The Bluesky Framework Into Collaborative Web Service Architecture And Creation Of A Smoke Modeling Application, Narasimhan K. Larkin, Sean Raffuse, Daniel Pryden, Alan Healy, Kevin Unger, Tara Strand, Robert Solomon

Joint Fire Science Program Research Project Reports

This project addresses the need for a collaborative architecture for scientific modeling that allows various scientific models to easily interact. The need for such a system has been documented by recent studies such as the JFSP Smoke Roundtables and the JFSP review of tools done by the Software Engineering Institute. This project addresses these needs by modifying the BlueSky Modeling Framework so that it can better serve as a collaborative architecture, and then utilizing this architecture to create an advanced application that could not otherwise be created. The BlueSky framework was modified for this purpose, and all changes integrated into …

Joint Fire Science Program Research Project Reports

Today, park managers must routinely balance the restoration needs of natural resources with the preservation of cultural resources. This project was designed to provide park managers with scientific data on the impacts from wildland fire to archeological resources at National Park Service units in the Midwest Region. Experimental research was conducted at six parks to record data on fire conditions (i.e., fuels, fire temperature, and burn duration) and the impacts on multiple classes of archeological materials routinely observed at sites within the region. The experimental study of fire conditions in different regional environments addresses questions regarding the threats or non-threats …

Voter Turnout: From Cost To Cooperation, Jason Marisam Jan 2009

Voter Turnout: From Cost To Cooperation, Jason Marisam

St. Thomas Law Review

Political scientists have generally concluded that state efforts to increase voter turnout will continue to flounder so long as those efforts remain focused on lowering the already low cost of voting. Accordingly, this Article argues that future efforts to achieve consistently higher and widespread voter turnout among all demographics must consider other determinants of voter behavior. The primary goal of this Article is to craft a framework based on a thorough understanding of voter motivation and behavior that helps conceptualize and analyze public efforts to increase voter turnout. The framework fills a gap in the literature by drawing from a …

The microRNA miR-7 is perfectly conserved from annelids to humans, and yet some of the genes that it regulates in Drosophila are not regulated in mammals. We have explored the role of lineage restricted targets, using Drosophila , in order to better understand the evolutionary significance of microRNA-target relationships. From studies of two well characterized developmental regulatory networks, we find that miR-7 functions in several interlocking feedback and feedforward loops, and propose that its role in these networks is to buffer them against perturbation. To directly demonstrate this function for miR-7, we subjected the networks to temperature fluctuation and found …
