Early Childhood Services And Supports In The Context Of Cultural Community Psychology, Richard N. Roberts
Early Childhood Services And Supports In The Context Of Cultural Community Psychology, Richard N. Roberts
Papers from the International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology Conferences
cultural and community aspects of the family’s and child’s experience. Though the effects of each of these variables may be hard to separate, distinct elements of each can be seen in the three examples used to illustrate this point. The common theme of the three case studies demonstrates that neither the community ecology nor cultural archetypes provide sufficiently satisfactory explanations for the everyday behaviors of the family members. Rather, the common denominator involves the context in which community and cultural influences interact to determine the outcome. When the context is one that supports both sets of influences, the families of …

BACKGROUND: Biomass smoke is an important source of particulate matter (PM), and much remains to be discovered with respect to the human health effects associated with this specific PM source. Exposure to biomass smoke can occur in one of two main categories: short-term exposures consist of periodic, seasonal exposures typified by communities near forest fires or intentional agricultural burning, and long-term exposures are chronic and typified by the use of biomass materials for cooking or heating. Levoglucosan (LG), a sugar anhydride released by combustion of cellulose-containing materials, is an attractive candidate as a biomarker of wood smoke exposure. OBJECTIVES: In …

In the crystal structure of the complex between the soluble extracellular domain of tissue factor (sTF) and activesite- inhibited VIIa, residues 91 and 92 in the Pro79-Pro92 loop of sTF interact with the catalytic domain of VIIa. It is not known, however, whether this loop has a role in allosteric activation of VIIa. Time-resolved fluorescence anisotropy measurements of probes covalently bound to sTF mutants E84C and T121C show that binding uninhibited Factor VIIa affects segmental motions in sTF. Glu84 resides in the Pro79-Pro92 loop, and Thr121 resides in the turn between the …

Fluctuating Asymmetry In Elk Cervus Elaphus Antlers Is Unrelated To Environmental Conditions In The Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem, Scott L. Eggeman, Mark Hebblewhite, Julie Cunningham, Ken Hamlin
Biological Sciences Faculty Publications
Fluctuating asymmetry (FA) is a measure of the deviation from perfect bilateral symmetry, and has been used across mammals as a reliable indicator of environmental stress during growth and development. Antler size and symmetry can be an indicator of individual fitness and social rank among ungulates such as the North American elk Cervus elaphus. When environmental conditions are favourable, ungulates allocate additional resources to antler development to increase secondary sexual traits and enhance reproduction. We tested whether there was an appreciable change in antler length and the number of points as extreme climatic conditions (e.g. heavy snow and drought) …
A Vocation As Politics: Work And Popular Theology In A Consumer Culture, Jeffrey E. Scholes
A Vocation As Politics: Work And Popular Theology In A Consumer Culture, Jeffrey E. Scholes
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The idea of vocation or a calling is particularly salient in much business motivational literature and popular Christian self-help books alike. Promoted is the idea of vocation that glosses over issues stemming from political power in the corporate workplace in order to given meaning to workers in spite of working conditions. In this form, vocations are unable to engage one's working life in ways that they can and should. I argue that recent trends in academic theologies of vocation as well as the role of consumer culture combine to allow the ascendancy of this form of the idea. I support …
Gene X Environment Interactions In Developmental Dyslexia, Lauren M. Mcgrath
Gene X Environment Interactions In Developmental Dyslexia, Lauren M. Mcgrath
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The goal of this project was to advance understanding of the complex multifactorial etiology of developmental dyslexia, or reading disability (RD), by investigating gene x environment (G x E) interactions. This project tested for G x E interactions using molecular genetic methods and measures of psychosocial and bioenvironmental risk factors. There are two competing predictions that can be derived from existing G x E models about the expected direction of interactions in RD. There could be "diathesis-stress" interactions in which the effects of genotype are stronger in risk environments, or there could be "bioecological" interactions in which the effects of …

Old Testament Contributions To Ecclesiology: Engaging And Extending The Insights Of John Howard Yoder, John C. Nugent
Old Testament Contributions To Ecclesiology: Engaging And Extending The Insights Of John Howard Yoder, John C. Nugent
CTS PhD Doctoral Dissertations
Conspicuously absent from ecclesiological literature is a volume dedicated exclusively to assessing the Old Testament‘s relevance to ecclesiology. With only a few exceptions, scant use is made of the Old Testament in ecclesiological primers and that use tends to be highly selective and often decontextualized. This dissertation argues that indepth engagement of the Old Testament furnishes a helpful context for ecclesiological reflection and that John Howard Yoder‘s canonical-directional approach to Scripture exemplifies such engagement. Though Yoder did not dedicate a treatise exclusively to the Old Testament‘s ecclesiological relevance, his numerous scattered essays on this topic evince a rich and coherent …

Bisphosphonates And Osteonecrosis Of The Jaw, Chaya Leah Katz
Bisphosphonates And Osteonecrosis Of The Jaw, Chaya Leah Katz
The Science Journal of the Lander College of Arts and Sciences
Bisphosphonate-related Osteonecrosis of the Jaw (BRONJ) is a condition which, according to the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (AAOMS), adversely affects between .8-12percent of the population, a small yet significant amount of adults. Osteonecrosis of the Jaw (ONJ) is characterized by the death of bone and suffering patients present with either a non-healing extraction socket or an exposed jawbone. In general, afflicted patients have been treated with a class of drugs known as the Bisphosphonates (BP). Bisphosphonates were originally developed in order to treat and manage many metastatic diseases of the bone and stabilize bone loss caused by …
Which Is To Be Master, The Judiciary Or The Legislature? When Statutory Directives Violate Separation Of Powers, Linda Jellum
Which Is To Be Master, The Judiciary Or The Legislature? When Statutory Directives Violate Separation Of Powers, Linda Jellum
Articles
Statutory interpretation is at the cutting edge of legal scholarship and, now, legislative activity. As legislatures have increasingly begun to perceive judges as activist meddlers, some legislatures have found a creative solution to the perceived control problem: statutory directives. Statutory directives, simply put, tell judges how to interpret statutes. Rather than wait for an interpretation with which they disagree, legislatures use statutory directives to control judicial interpretation. Legislatures are constitutionally empowered to draft statutes. In doing so, legislatures expect to control the meaning of the words they choose. Moreover, they prefer to do so early in the process, not after …

Critical Evaluation Of Bacteriophage To Prevent And Treat Colibacillosis In Poultry, G. R. Huff, W. E. Huff, N. C. Rath, A. M. Donoghue
Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science
There is a continuing need to find alternatives to antibiotics in animal and human medicine. Bacteriophages are viruses that infect and kill bacteria, with no known activity to plant and animal cells. We have conducted research to critically evaluate the efficacy of bacteriophage to both prevent and treat colibacillosis in poultry. Bacteriophages lytic to an Escherichia coli pathogenic to poultry were isolated from municipal waste water treatment plants and poultry processing plants. Two bacteriophage isolates were selected to use in studies designed to determine the efficacy of these bacteriophage to prevent and treat severe colibacillosis in poultry. Colibacillosis was induced …
Nitrogen Removal And Sustainability Of Vertical Flow Constructed Wetlands For Small Scale Wastewater Treatment, Valerie J. Fuchs
Nitrogen Removal And Sustainability Of Vertical Flow Constructed Wetlands For Small Scale Wastewater Treatment, Valerie J. Fuchs
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open
The challenge for wastewater professionals is to design and operate treatment processes that support human well being and are environmentally sensitive throughout the life-cycle. This research focuses on one technology for small-scale wastewater treatment: the vertical flow constructed wetland (VFCW), which is herein investigated for the capacity to remove ammonium and nitrate nitrogen from wastewater. Hydraulic regime and presence/absence of vegetation are the basis for a three-phase bench scale experiment to determine oxygen transfer and nitrogen fate in VFCWs. Results show that 90% NH4+-N removal is achieved in aerobic downflow columns, 60% NO3--N removal occurs in anaerobic upflow columns, and …

Gene Pool Organization, Population Genetics And Wild-Crop Complex Dynamics Of Cowpea (Vigna Unguiculata), Eric Bertrand Kouam
All PhD Dissertations
Cowpea is a tropical legume contributing significantly to food security in developing countries, especially in Africa. This research project was motivated by the upcoming introduction of Bt cowpea in Africa, likely to disturb the genetic equilibrium existing between wild and cultivated cowpea. The objectives of this study were to assess the genetic relationship between wild and cultivated cowpea, to determine how inbred and how differentiated are cowpea populations as well as gene flow, to estimate the mating system parameters in cowpea and their relation to ecological agents. In order to achieve these goals, wild and cultivated cowpea individuals were electrophoreticafy …

Field surveys were carried out from 2005 to 2007 to assess parasitoid species diversity and stem borer parasitism in cultivated and natural habitats in four agroecological zones in Kenya. To increase the chances of collecting stem borer parasitoids, random sampling was employed in cultivated habitats, while both random and non-random samplings were applied in natural habitats. A total of 7443 and 3676 stem borers were collected from cultivated and natural habitats, respectively. Thirty-three species of parasitoid were recovered. Eighteen of them from six stem borer species feeding on cereal crops, and twenty seven from twenty-one stem borer species feeding on …

Basis Of Host Recognition By The Larval Endoparasitoids: Cotesia Sesamiae Cameron And Cotesia Flavipes (Cameron) (Hymenoptera: Braconidae), Amos Owino Meshack Obonyo
All PhD Dissertations
Host recognition behaviour of two braconid larval parasitoids Cotesia sesamiae and Cotesia flavipes was studied using suitable stemborer hosts [i.e. Busseola fusca for C. sesamiae, and Chilo partellus for C. flavipes] and one non-host [Eldana saccharina]. The wasps displayed similar sequences of behavioural steps when locating their hosts largely depending on their antennae for host recognition and both antennae and tarsi for final host acceptance and oviposition. Tactile and contact chemoreception stimuli from the hosts seem to play a major role in oviposition decision by the parasitoids. In addition, the external morphology and distribution pattern of sensilla present on antennae, …

Reproductive Isolation Between Two Sympatric Simultaneous Hermaphroditic Shrimp, Lysmata Wurdemanni And L. Boggessi, Dong Zhang, Junda Lin, Jörg D. Hardege, Andrew L. Rhyne
Arts & Sciences Faculty Publications
To investigate pre- and post-zygotic isolation between two sympatric and phylogenetically related species of Lysmata shrimp, two assays were conducted in the laboratory: (1) no specific mate choice where mating between the two species was ‘forced’; (2) specific mate choice or preference where a female had a choice between conspecific and heterospecifc males. Behavioural studies reveal that female L. wurdemanni accepted only conspecific male shrimp, whereas L. boggessi females would mate with an interspecific male if there was no conspecific male present. When males of both species were present, L. boggessi females always mated with the conspecific male. Male L. …

Identification Of Chemical Signals That Influence The Oviposition Behaviour Of Anopheles Gambiae And Exploration Of Their Potential In Mosquito Control, Sabina Wangui Wachira
All PhD Dissertations
The African mosquito species Anopheles gambiae and An. funestus are ranked high among the world's most efficient vectors of human malaria. Their juvenile stages develop in aquatic environments while adults are terrestrial. Chemical signals guide gravid females of these vectors to their egg-laying sites. Several attributes of a pond including presence of other organisms influence egg hatching success and larval survival. Gravid An. gambiae females strongly discriminate among potential egg-laying sites to ensure viability of their offsprings. This study is based on the hypothesis that gravid An. gambiae females use chemical cues from microbial activity and/or those associated with competitors …

An Evaluation Of The Effects Of Information And Technology Characteristics On Technology Choice And Adoption The Case Of Striga And Stemborer Control Technologies In Maize Production In Western Kenya, Esther Njuguna Mwihaki
All PhD Dissertations
Kenya's population is increasing, thus leading to increased demand for food, especially maize which is a staple food for most of the Kenyan population. Demand for maize in Sub Saharan Africa is projected to double to 52 million tons by 2020 (Pingali and Pandey). The increasing population has also caused the per capita farm holdings in Kenya rural areas to become smaller due to continuous sub-division. Besides the reduced farm holding, maize production is constrained by both biotic and abiotic factors. Two of the most important biotic constraints in maize production are Striga and stemborer infestations.Maize yield loss due to …

Retinal ganglion cells that express the photopigment melanopsin are intrinsically photosensitive (ipRGCs) and exhibit robust synaptically driven ON-responses to light, yet they will continue to depolarize in response to light when all synaptic input from rod and cone photoreceptors is removed. The light-evoked increase in firing of classical ganglion cells is determined by synaptic input from ON-bipolar cells in the proximal sublamina of the inner plexiform layer. OFF-bipolar cells synapse with ganglion cell dendrites in the distal sublamina of the inner plexiform layer. Of the several types of ipRGC that have been described, M1 ipRGCs send dendrites exclusively into the …

The purpose of this study is to expand the definition of adequacy by adding soft skills as a measure of school productivity. The singular focus on academic standards inherent in education policy has prevented scholars from seeing the concept of adequacy through myriad perspectives and has contributed to a resegregation of schools. Education policy includes legal, historical, and political perspectives; research inquiries must accommodate these multiple foci. This study made use of multifocal analysis to investigate the development of the concept of adequacy in South Carolina. Conclusions suggest an expanded definition of adequacy has potential for addressing school financing policy, …
