Cultural Translation In Two Directions: The Suzuki Method In Japan And Germany, Margaret Mehl Jan 2009

Cultural Translation In Two Directions: The Suzuki Method In Japan And Germany, Margaret Mehl

Research & Issues in Music Education

Cultural Translation in Two Directions: The Suzuki Method in Japan and Germany The Suzuki Method represents a significant contribution by a Japanese, Suzuki Shin'ichi (1898-1998), to the teaching of musical instruments worldwide. Western observers often represent the method as "Japanese," although it could be called "Western" with equal justification. Suzuki left no detailed description of his method. Consequently, it is open to multiple interpretations. Its application, whether in Japan or elsewhere, represents an act of translation with its adaptation to local conditions involving creative processes rather than mere deviations from a supposedly fixed original.

To illustrate the importance of historical …

Should The Government Prosecute Monopolies?, Maurice Stucke Jan 2009

Should The Government Prosecute Monopolies?, Maurice Stucke

Scholarly Works

In the past few years, courts and the Department of Justice have cited approvingly the Court's dicta in Verizon Communications Inc. v. Law Offices of Curtis V. Trinko, LLP. This article analyzes why the economic thinking in Trinko is wrong, and how the Court ignores its precedent involving the Sherman Act's concerns of monopolies' political, social and ethical implications. It responds to the Court's claim that cartel behavior is easier to identify and remedy than monopolistic behavior and proposes an improvement to the Court's current rule of reason standard to reduce the risk of false positives, while enabling the antitrust …

The Mythic Journey Of A Changeling, Lawrence Kimmel Jan 2009

The Mythic Journey Of A Changeling, Lawrence Kimmel

Philosophy Faculty Research

There are many such tales in the archaic moorings of our collective memory, but one in particular that seems inclusive if indeterminate: Once upon a time there was a creature that came out of the darkness with a only a faint memory of water, and sand, and cold, and fear to discover that its very life depended on telling a story about its origins—of which it had no clear memory, and its destiny—of which it had no certain knowledge. What more fabulous to conceive than this creature which, having lost its tail, dreams of growing wings? It is a being …

Chemistry Faculty Research

A new family of guanidinium-rich molecular transporters featuring a novel oligocarbonate backbone with 1,7-side chain spacing is described. Conjugates can be rapidly assembled irrespective of length in a one-step oligomerization strategy that can proceed with concomitant introduction of probes (or by analogy drugs). The new transporters exhibit excellent cellular entry as determined by flow cytometry and fluorescence microscopy, and the functionality of their drug delivery capabilities was confirmed by the delivery of the bioluminescent small molecule probe luciferin and turnover by its intracellular target enzyme.

Metadata Implementation For Building Cross-Institutional Repositories: Lessons Learned From The Liberal Arts Scholarly Repository (Lasr), Jane Costanza, R. Cecilia Knight, Hsianghui Liu-Spencer

Library Faculty Research

Institutional repositories are an exciting innovation in scholarly communication and liberal arts institutions have a unique opportunity to create repository collections that reflect their tradition. However, the challenges of cost, staffing, infrastructure, standardized metadata, and content recruitment that are part and parcel of developing institutional repositories may be daunting to individual liberal arts institutions. The idea that multiple, like-minded institutions could join forces to share their efforts, unique challenges, and maximize their efficiencies grew into the Liberal Arts Scholarly Repository (LASR). Initial steps in this collaboration included the development of a group mission and a statement of collection policies. Technical …

Effects Of Intense Grazing On Cattails Jan 2009

Effects Of Intense Grazing On Cattails

United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications

The Rainwater Basin Wetland Management District is often asked the question “If your job is to manage for wildlife, why are you grazing the vegetation? There is nothing left for wildlife!”

It is believed that historically, grazing of Rainwater Basin wetlands by large herds, especially during dry conditions was a driving force in keeping wetland vegetation in an early successional state. Likewise, it is commonly observed that the lack of disturbance by animals, fire, or mechanical means will cause wetland vegetation to shift from annual, early successional plants to perennial, late successional plants such as cattail and river bulrush.

United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications

The Mountain-Prairie Region Fisheries Program (Program) of the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service (Service) historically has played an important role in conservation and management of fish and other aquatic resources and key wildlife resources on tribal and DOD lands. In 2002, a new national vision was developed entitled Conserving America’s Fisheries, U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service Fisheries Program Vision for the Future. The purpose of this Vision has been to improve the Service’s ability to fulfill its resource conservation and management role and to improve relationships with our partners. That Vision was stepped down regionally into a …

Reproductive Performance Of Bison At The National Bison Range, M. J. Borgreen, T. J. Roffe, K. Phillips, J. G. Berardinelli

United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications

The recruitment of calves at the National Bison Range (NBR) near Moiese, MT has dropped from the historic average of 87 to 33 calves per 100 breeding age cows in 2008. The purpose of this study is to monitor the NBR bison pregnancy rates and calf recruitment in an effort to determine where in the reproductive cycle NBR female bison fail to recruit calves. The reproductive cycle was divided into 3 stages: conception to early embryonic development; maintenance of pregnancy during the second and third trimesters; and, calving to recruitment. Herein we report results related to the first two stages. …

Trade Sanctions, Human Rights And Multinational Corporations: The Eu-Acp Context, Olufemi Amao Jan 2009

Trade Sanctions, Human Rights And Multinational Corporations: The Eu-Acp Context, Olufemi Amao

UC Law SF International Law Review

This paper examines the human rights dimension of trade agreements between the European Union ("EU") and the African Caribbean and Pacific ("ACP") group of countries and their relevance to the control of multinational corporations ("MNCs"). It notes that even though MNCs are the major beneficiaries of the agreements, they have not been prominent in the discourse. The paper explores the foundation for the inclusion of human rights issues in trade agreements, and argues in favour of their legitimacy. The study contends that human rights clauses in the agreements should be triggered where there are human rights violations in the territory …

Equivalency And Patent Law’S Possession Paradox, Timothy R. Holbrook Jan 2009

Equivalency And Patent Law’S Possession Paradox, Timothy R. Holbrook

Sturm College of Law: Faculty Scholarship

Under the Federal Circuit's current law, the doctrine of equivalents protects only those technologies that arise after the patent issues. This state of affairs creates a curious paradox: the patentee is afforded protection for that which she did not possess, which runs counter to the general view that patents afford protection for the inventor's creation. This paper explores this paradox and offers two possible means of reconciling it based on principles of fairness. First, patentees should only be protected under the doctrine of equivalents for changes in technology that arise from outside their field of technology. While seemingly simple in …

A Comparative Study Of High-Linoleic Acid Vegetable Oils For The Production Of Conjugated Linoleic Acid, Whitney Gammill Jan 2009

A Comparative Study Of High-Linoleic Acid Vegetable Oils For The Production Of Conjugated Linoleic Acid, Whitney Gammill

Inquiry: The University of Arkansas Undergraduate Research Journal

Conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) has anti-carcinogenic, anti-diabetic, and anti-atherogenic properties and is present in very small quantities in dairy and beef products. Obtaining optimum dietary CLA levels from these sources requires an undesirable increased intake of saturated fat A 20% CLA soy oil has been produced by UV photoisomerization of linoleic acid (LA) in soy oill, which is naturally low in saturated fat. However, no other high LA vegetable oils have been studied for their potential as CLA-rich oils. The objectives of this research were to: 1) commpare flax, sunflower, corn, soy and high LA safflower oils as sources of …

Think Like A Mountain : The Need For Nature For Increased Mental Health, Erin M. Mclaughlin Jan 2009

Think Like A Mountain : The Need For Nature For Increased Mental Health, Erin M. Mclaughlin

Graduate Research Papers

Nature has been an integral part of the human life for thousands of years. Only in the most recent hundred years, societies have begun to view nature as a foreign concept outside of the normal realm of daily life. Along with this disconnect from nature, mental illness has increased in our societal populations. This paper identifies the correlation of the need for nature, the lack of connection to nature, and the significant increase in depression, ADHD, anxiety, and autism diagnoses, among others. It also identifies therapeutic techniques that incorporate and connect with nature, as well as provides a comprehensive reference …
