Effects Of Direct Mechanical Ventricular Actuation On The Apoptotic Signaling Of A Failing Heart, Scott Kerns Jan 2009

Effects Of Direct Mechanical Ventricular Actuation On The Apoptotic Signaling Of A Failing Heart, Scott Kerns

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Cardiovascular disease accounts for more than 40% of all deaths in the United States (AHA-2004 report). A non blood contacting ventricular assist device (VAD) can be used to treat heart failure without the complications that arise from blood contacting VADs. This study used cellular markers of heart failure as indicators of heart function in an attempt to assess if direct mechanical ventricular actuation (DMVA) support lessened the impact of heart failure in rabbits. Cell signaling proteins were monitored using enzyme activity measurements and quantitative immunoblotting with antibodies against intrinsic and extrinsic apoptotic pathways during heart failure with and without DMVA …

No Effect Of Prenatal Alcohol Exposure On Activity In Three Inbred Strains Of Mice, Chris Downing, Christina Balderrama-Durbin, Jonathan Hayes, Thomas E. Johnson, David Gilliam

SPS Faculty Publications

Aims: Prenatal exposure to alcohol can have adverse effects on the developing fetus. Two of the hallmarks of children exposed to alcohol prenatally are attention deficits and hyperactivity. While hyperactivity has been observed in rats following prenatal ethanol exposure, few studies have examined these effects in mice. The present study investigated the effects of prenatal ethanol exposure on activity in mice from three inbred strains: C57BL/6 (B6), Inbred Long Sleep (ILS) and Inbred Short Sleep (ISS).

Methods: On days 7 through 18 of gestation, mice were intragastrically intubated twice daily with either 3.0 g/kg Ethanol (E) or an isocaloric amount …

Of Gods, Beasts And Men: Digital Sculpture, Brian Salisbury Jan 2009

Of Gods, Beasts And Men: Digital Sculpture, Brian Salisbury

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

My most recent body of work explores the synthesis of my influences, interests and life experiences into imagery of common themes: The expression of dynamic figures and forms and colors in digital 3d space, cinematic composition, and vibrant color, expressed through a semblance of Aztec culture and wildlife. My sculptures of nature and ancient culture are created using contemporary digital art creation technologies and techniques. I examine the art and religion of the Aztecs and the universal search for understanding and purpose in the world and the forces around and beyond us.

Handwritten Notes On Art And The Intrinsic Worth Of A Human Life - 2009, Wendy J. Gordon

Scholarship Chronologically

At fifteen I found myself looking at a tree against the sky and being filled up with something bigger than I could contain. It was a sensation that demanded to be poured into something. The best label I could find for the emotion was "gratitude": Gratitude for the world I had not made, but had been given.

Lecture Draft Of Art And The Intrinsic Worth Of A Human Life - 2009, Wendy J. Gordon

Scholarship Chronologically

I've taken advantage of Tom's invitation to write a paper on religion and copyright that was "informal in format, in keeping with the informal nature of this gathering". What I have had to say on the Jewish law of gleaning is already on record; 1 what you'll read here are more like meditations. Thinking about the connections between art, spirituality and law has touched some very personal issues for me. Further, I know that everything I have to say is partial. I hope what I am about to give you will nevertheless raise some questions of interest.

Botox And Its Effect On Wrinkles, Rochelle Eckstein Jan 2009

Botox And Its Effect On Wrinkles, Rochelle Eckstein

The Science Journal of the Lander College of Arts and Sciences

Clostridia Botulinum (C. Botulinum) is a bacterium that produces a unique exotoxin, botulinum toxin (BTX). BTX induces flaccid muscle paralysis by inhibiting the release of acetylcholine at the cholinergic nerve endings. Recently, Botox, developed from BTX, has become a popular solution to reduce the appearance of hyper-functional facial rhytids. Facial wrinkles are caused by repetitive muscle contraction, and a treatment that directly addresses this will be effective. Injections of Botox temporarily relax or paralyze these muscles. This paper will briefly discuss the bacterial basis of Botox and its development. It will explain how the mechanism of action of BTX can …

It looks at several areas important to dairy producers, and emphasizes the availability of feed and other natural resources of utmost importance to the dairy industry. While this NebGuide is not expansive and does not list feed prices, utility rates, etc., it does list the reasons why Nebraska is a good place to look at for a dairy operation.

Sustainability In A Time Of Climate Change: Keynote Address And Conference Charge, Tom Armstrong

Office of Research and Economic Development: Publications

In the world we live in today, I can tell you that the Nebraska landscape is a sensitive landscape. I’m not here to try to convince you today that climate change is real. That’s for you to decide. But I will tell you my own opinion on this as a scientist and as a manager of the U.S. Climate Change Science Program, a 13-federal-agency consortium that spends about $2.2 billion a year on science and assessing the state of science regarding climate change. For many years this program has really dealt with the issue: Is climate change real or not? …

Strip-Mining And Grassroots Resistance In Appalachia: Community Lawyering For Environmental Justice, Dean Rivkin Jan 2009

Strip-Mining And Grassroots Resistance In Appalachia: Community Lawyering For Environmental Justice, Dean Rivkin

Scholarly Works

Environmental justice campaigns have been a dynamic feature of public interest lawyering for over four decades. These community lawyers, sensitive to the democratic imperatives of their grassroots clients, employ a viscous blend of legal and nonlegal strategies to achieve their clients’ aims. This article is the story of an environmental justice campaign, still being waged, in the Appalachian mountains of east Tennessee. The campaign seeks to halt the destructive practice of mountaintop removal strip-mining for coal through the deployment of traditional litigation and more unconventional extrajudicial strategies, both of which are designed to build the voices and power of the …

The Effects Of Human Activities On The Conservation Of Endangered Sea Turtles In Mexico : A Gis And Ethnographic Analysis, Joseì Rolando Pantoja

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

This is a study about the effects of human activities and tourist development on the Olive Ridley, an endangered sea turtle species that nests on the beaches of the Northern shores of the Bay of Banderas, Nayarit, Mexico. I traveled to the site and I used a mixed methods approach to do my research. First, I mapped the nesting sea turtle sites using GIS/GPS technology. I recorded the location of the nests on the beach using the GPS device for a period of three weeks. The data were imported into GIS and analyzed. Second, for the Ethnographic qualitative methods, I …

The Positive Role Of Negative Emotions: Fear, Anxiety, Conflict And Resistance As Productive Experiences In Academic Study And In The Emergence Of Learner Autonomy, Jaya Kannan, John Laurence Miller

CTL Publications

Although affect is widely recognized as a powerful force in determining students’ academic success, researchers and practitioners have paid little attention to emotional barriers that often impede college success or how instructors may respond constructively when such barriers arise. The purpose of this paper is to initiate discussion of this important problem by offering a model of how an initially resistant, fearful, and/or anxious student can use emotionally unpleasant experiences to transform himself or herself into a more autonomous and successful learner. We offer prima facie support for this model by presenting the results of two cases of first year …
