Class Of Nonperturbative Configurations In Abelian-Higgs Models: Complexity From Dynamical Symmetry Breaking, M. Gleiser, J. Thorarinson Jan 2009

Class Of Nonperturbative Configurations In Abelian-Higgs Models: Complexity From Dynamical Symmetry Breaking, M. Gleiser, J. Thorarinson

Dartmouth Scholarship

We present a numerical investigation of the dynamics of symmetry breaking in both Abelian and non-Abelian [SU(2)] Higgs models in three spatial dimensions. We find a class of time-dependent, long-lived nonperturbative field configurations within the range of parameters corresponding to type-1 superconductors, that is, with vector masses (mv) larger than scalar masses (ms). We argue that these emergent nontopological configurations are related to oscillons found previously in other contexts. For the Abelian-Higgs model, our lattice implementation allows us to map the range of parameter space—the values of β=(ms/mv)2—where such configurations exist and to follow them for times t∼O(105)m−1. An investigation …

The Specificity Of The Search Template, Mary J. Bravo, Hany Farid Jan 2009

The Specificity Of The Search Template, Mary J. Bravo, Hany Farid

Dartmouth Scholarship

When searching for a target object, observers use an internal representation of the target's appearance as a search template. This study used naturalistic stimuli to examine the specificity of this template. Observers first learned several name-image pairs; they then participated in a search experiment in which the names served as cues and the images served as targets. To test whether the observers searched for the targets using an exact image template, we included targets that were transformations of the studied image and targets that belonged to the same subordinate-level category as the studied image. The same stimuli were also used …

Porco, Ettore, Bronx African American History Project Jan 2009

Porco, Ettore, Bronx African American History Project

Oral Histories

Ettore Porco was born on January 15 1915 in southern Italy in the province of Cosenza. He was youngest of ten children. He came to America in 1933 during the depression. He immigrated to New York because the farm he tended to while in Italy bore no food. He went to stay in the Bronx with his oldest brother on Hollywood Avenue. His first job was as a shoe shiner and while he went to elementary school in Italy, he had to learn English from scratch once he came to the states.

He met his wife in the Bronx, she …

Prep Coastal Watershed Land Protection Transaction Grants 2008 Funding Round, Derek Sowers Jan 2009

Prep Coastal Watershed Land Protection Transaction Grants 2008 Funding Round, Derek Sowers

PREP Reports & Publications

In 2008, fourteen projects received PREP funds to support transaction costs associated with permanent land conservation projects in the New Hampshire coastal watershed. A maximum of $3,000 was granted to each project, with a single organization eligible to receive up to three separate awards. Funds were granted to eight different organizations, all of which were land trusts or town Conservation Commissions. Projects were completed in nine different towns, with the total acreage of land permanently protected reported at 984 acres. Nine of the fourteen projects were located in priority Conservation Focus Areas identified in The Land Conservation Plan for New …

The Use Of Magical Plants By Curanderos In The Ecuador Highlands, Anthony P. Cavender, Manuel Albán Jan 2009

The Use Of Magical Plants By Curanderos In The Ecuador Highlands, Anthony P. Cavender, Manuel Albán

ETSU Faculty Works

Although the use of plants for treating supernaturally caused illnesses (e.g., soul loss, evil wind, witchcraft) has been documented in the Ecuador highlands, so-called magical plants have received much less focused attention than plants used for treating naturalistic disorders. Drawing on interviews done in 2002 and 2003 with 116 curanderos residing in the Ecuador highlands, this paper examines the characteristics of plants identified as magical, how they are used, and how the study of magical plants provides insights into the mindscape of residents of the highlands.

Using Least Median Of Squares For Structural Superposition Of Flexible Proteins, Yu-Shen Liu, Yi Fang, Karthik Ramani Jan 2009

Using Least Median Of Squares For Structural Superposition Of Flexible Proteins, Yu-Shen Liu, Yi Fang, Karthik Ramani

School of Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications

Background

The conventional superposition methods use an ordinary least squares (LS) fit for structural comparison of two different conformations of the same protein. The main problem of the LS fit that it is sensitive to outliers, i.e. large displacements of the original structures superimposed.

Results

To overcome this problem, we present a new algorithm to overlap two protein conformations by their atomic coordinates using a robust statistics technique: least median of squares (LMS). In order to effectively approximate the LMS optimization, the forward search technique is utilized. Our algorithm can automatically detect and superimpose the rigid core regions of two …

Trumpeter Swan Survey Of The Rocky Mountain Population, U.S. Breeding Segment Fall 2008, James A. Dubovsky Jan 2009

Trumpeter Swan Survey Of The Rocky Mountain Population, U.S. Breeding Segment Fall 2008, James A. Dubovsky

United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications

Observers counted 459 swans (white birds and cygnets) in the U.S. Breeding Segment of the Rocky Mountain Population of trumpeter swans during fall of 2008, 13% lower than the count from last year (527). The number of white birds in the tri-state region (379) was about the same as in 2007 (383), but the number of cygnets declined 58% and was the lowest since 1993. Biologists attributed the decline to cold and snowy weather conditions, which are not conducive to successful reproduction. The numbers of young produced in Montana, Idaho, and Wyoming were 83%, 67%, and 39% lower, respectively, than …

Improvements In Life Cycle Energy Efficiency And Greenhouse Gas Emissions Of Corn-Ethanol, Adam J. Liska, Haishun S. Yang, Virgil R. Bremer, Terry J. Klopfenstein, Daniel T. Walters, Galen Erickson, Kenneth G. Cassman Jan 2009

Improvements In Life Cycle Energy Efficiency And Greenhouse Gas Emissions Of Corn-Ethanol, Adam J. Liska, Haishun S. Yang, Virgil R. Bremer, Terry J. Klopfenstein, Daniel T. Walters, Galen Erickson, Kenneth G. Cassman

Nebraska Center for Energy Sciences Research: Publications

Abstract
Corn-ethanol production is expanding rapidly with the adoption of improved technologies to increase energy efficiency and profitability in crop production, ethanol conversion, and coproduct use. Life cycle assessment can evaluate the impact of these changes on environmental performance metrics. To this end, we analyzed the life cycles of corn-ethanol systems accounting for the majority of U.S. capacity to estimate greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and energy efficiencies on the basis of updated values for crop management and yields, biorefinery operation, and coproduct utilization. Direct-effect GHG emissions were estimated to be equivalent to a 48% to 59% reduction compared to gasoline, …
