Management Of Merino Weaners For Optimum Production, Patricia Harper, Keith Croker, Danny Roberts
Management Of Merino Weaners For Optimum Production, Patricia Harper, Keith Croker, Danny Roberts
Bulletins 4000 -
Sheep mortality during the first year of life is a large problem on many farms and poses a significant animal welfare issue for Australian agriculture. Post weaning mortality is estimated to cost the Australian sheep industry more than $89 million annually through reduced income, poor productivity and increased management expenses (Sackett et al. 2006).
A high mortality rate among weaners reduces the number of surplus animals available for sale and the number of potential breeding replacements. This, in turn, affects the selection intensity for desirable traits and the flock’s rate of genetic improvement.
Ill thrift and poor growth of weaner …

Sexually Antagonistic Selection, Sexual Dimorphism, And The Resolution Of Intralocus Sexual Conflict, Robert M. Cox, Ryan Calsbeek
Dartmouth Scholarship
Males and females share most of their genomes and express many of the same traits, yet the sexes often have markedly different selective optima for these shared traits. This sexually antagonistic (SA) selection generates intralocus sexual conflict that is thought to be resolved through the evolution of sexual dimorphism. However, we currently know little about the prevalence of SA selection, the components of fitness that generate sexual antagonism, or the relationship between sexual dimorphism and current SA selection. We reviewed published studies to address these questions, using 424 selection estimates representing 89 traits from 34 species. Males and females often …

Fisheries Occasional Publication 61 - Proposed Quota Settings For The West Coast Rock Lobster Managed Fishery, Department Of Fisheries, Wa
Fisheries Occasional Publications
The former Minister for Fisheries asked the Rock Lobster Industry Advisory Committee (RLIAC) to provide him with a business case for a quota management system (QMS) in the West Coast Rock Lobster Managed Fishery, following renewed interest from industry for the introduction of a QMS. The business case consists of two components:
1. a management paper that describes the proposed quota management settings; and
2. an interactive spreadsheet financial model for licensees to explore the impact of the proposed management settings on their business. A RLIAC Working Group was established by RLIAC to develop the proposed QMS settings. Most of …
Decent Colonialism? Pure Science And Colonial Ideology In The Netherlands East Indies, 1910–1929, Andrew Goss
Decent Colonialism? Pure Science And Colonial Ideology In The Netherlands East Indies, 1910–1929, Andrew Goss
History Faculty Publications
This article examines changes within the Dutch civilising mission ideology after the decline of the Ethical Policy. Support of pure science, scientific knowledge that supposedly transcended ideology and politics, allowed the colonial administration to continue to project their rule as decent and moral, even as conflict and repression dominated colonial politics in the 1920s. The argument starts with the construction of pure science after 1910, under the care of J.C. Koningsberger, out of the research traditions at the Department of Agriculture. It next examines the creation of institutions and agendas of pure science. And finally it analyses the absorption of …

Apoptosis of host cells plays an important role in modulating the pathogenesis of many infectious diseases. It has been reported that Leptospira interrogans, the causal agent of leptospirosis, induces apoptosis in macrophages and hepatocytes. However, the molecular mechanisms responsible for host cell death remained largely unknown. Here we demonstrate that L. interrogans induced apoptosis in a macrophage-like cell line, J774A.1, and primary murine macrophages in a time- and dose-dependent manner. Apoptosis was associated with the activation of cysteine aspartic acid-specific proteases (caspase-3, caspase-6, and caspase-8), the increased expression of Fas-associated death domain (FADD), and the cleavage of the caspase substrates …

Correlating Threshold Power With Free-Space Bandwidth For Low-Directivity Antennas, Abu T.M. Sayem, Mark G. Douglas, Gernot Schmidt, Ben Petric, Mohammod Ali

This paper develops a threshold power rationale that can be used to demonstrate inherent compliance for portable wireless devices with specific absorption rate (SAR) limits over the 300-6000-MHz frequency range. This is achieved first by understanding the relationship between basic antenna parameters (bandwidth, operating frequency, and distance to the body) and SAR. From this, an upper limit is determined for the power transmitted by a portable wireless device such that the SAR will not exceed the compliance limit. Based on the presented computational and measured data, an empirical formula is developed for the threshold power as a function of the …
Consensual Sadomasochism, Briana O'Dowd
Consensual Sadomasochism, Briana O'Dowd
Mako: NSU Undergraduate Student Journal
Sadism, the desire to inflict pain, and masochism, the craving for pain, can be categorized as formal mental disorders, as per the DSMIV-TR, but only to the extent to which normal functioning is impaired by the acts and fantasies associated with them. Sadomasochism spans across nearly all demographics and time periods, having its origin around the emergence of philosophy, economics, and politics. Consensual sadomasochism carries with it a particular consideration as both participants desire to become the other’s erotic fantasy and indeed enjoy being in that role. Sadomasochism has been continuously looked down upon by society due to misunderstandings about …

High levels of ciliate infestation can affect respiration, feed intake, and locomotion in farmed shrimps in the tropics. Information on seasonal variation of the infestation parameters of ciliates is scarce, but it would be useful for determining the suitability of preventive measures or therapeutic treatment if necessary. This study aimed to describe the prevalence and mean intensity of infestation (MII) of ciliates on wild native shrimps Penaeus (Farfantepenaeus) brasiliensis and P. (Farfantepenaeus) duorarum and farm-cultured juvenile shrimp Penaeus (Litopenaeus) vannamei over an annual cycle and to determine whether an association existed among physicochemical factors …

A Case Of Fetal Valproate Syndrome With New Features Expanding The Phenotype, Mohammed Z. Seidahmed, Abeer M. Miqdad, Hessa S. Al-Dohami, Osama M. Shareefi
Saudi Medical Journal
Fetal valproate syndrome (FVS) is a well-recognized constellation of dysmorphic features, and neurodevelopmental retardation that results from prenatal exposure to the anticonvulsant valproic acid. In this report, we describe a case with typical features of FVS. A 23-year-old lady with post-traumatic epilepsy controlled by sodium valproate (Depakene) 500 mg twice daily throughout pregnancy as monotherapy, gave birth to a female baby with facial features characteristic of FVS, and severe radial ray reduction. She also had wide-spaced nipples and short neck, features not described before. Sodium valproate, a widely used anticonvulsant and mood regulator, is a well-recognized teratogen that can result …

Eimeria Spp. In Brazilian Water Buffalo, Antonio Carlos F. De Noronha, Jr., Wilma A. Starke-Buzetti, Donald W. Duszynski
Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications
Eimeria species are frequently found in water buffalo (Bubalus bubalis) in Brazil. Here, we report those Eimeria spp. that infect buffalos during their first year of life. Fresh fecal samples were examined from 2 groups (1 group/yr for 2 yr, 2000-2002), each with 18 water buffalo calves (both sexes), from birth through 12 months of age, in Selvíria, MS, Brazil. Five oocyst morphotypes were observed, i.e., Eimeria ellipsoidalis and Eimeria zuernii, both previously described from water buffalo, and 3 other morphotypes consistent with descriptions of known Eimeria spp. from Artiodactyla hosts, but originally described from other …

The Perceptions Of Secondary Teachers And Students About The Implementation Of An Inclusive Classroom Model For Students With Mild Disabilities, John O’Rourke, Stephen Houghton
The Perceptions Of Secondary Teachers And Students About The Implementation Of An Inclusive Classroom Model For Students With Mild Disabilities, John O’Rourke, Stephen Houghton
Australian Journal of Teacher Education
This research used qualitative methods to gather the perceptions of regular classroom teachers and students with and without mild disabilities (MD) about an inclusive program implemented in three separate classrooms and designed to enhance both the academic and social engagement of a small number of students with MD. Teachers acknowledged that these strategies resulted in improvements in their classroom approach and in positive outcomes for students. Two of the three teachers considered that the strategies resulted in limited academic gains, but provided opportunities for students with MD to enhance their social experience. All students were positive about certain changes to …
The Call To Critique ‘Common Sense’ Understandings About Boys And Masculinity(Ies), Leanne Dalley-Trim
The Call To Critique ‘Common Sense’ Understandings About Boys And Masculinity(Ies), Leanne Dalley-Trim
Australian Journal of Teacher Education
This paper is founded upon the premise that ‘common sense’ understandings about boys persist within schools and, given this continuing circulation of such understandings, advocates the need to critique such conceptualising. It does so on the grounds that such understandings, and the essentialist discursive knowledges informing these, fail to take account of the complex and multifarious ways in which boys come to construct themselves as masculine subjects. In demonstrating the short-comings of such ‘common sense’ understandings, and indeed to need to call these into question, the paper examines the ways in which a group of boys took up positions of …

The parties—and the district court below—all agree that the threshold question in this case is whether the individual right to bear arms recently recognized by the Supreme Court in District of Columbia v. Heller, and applied in the context of the federal government and the District of Columbia, must also be protected against state infringement. In modern Supreme Court jurisprudence, the most common means of “incorporating” rights enumerated in the Bill of Rights against the states has been under the Due Process Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment. However, the textually and historically accurate approach to determining whether the Fourteenth Amendment …

Objective: In this review we describe the approach taken by the National Children’s Study (NCS), a 21-year prospective study of 100,000 American children, to understanding the role of environmental factors in the development of obesity.
Data sources and extraction: We review the literature with regard to the two core hypotheses in the NCS that relate to environmental origins of obesity and describe strategies that will be used to test each hypothesis.
Data synthesis: Although it is clear that obesity in an individual results from an imbalance between energy intake and expenditure, control of the obesity epidemic will require understanding of …

Background: One of the principal theories regarding the biological basis of major depressive disorder (MDD) implicates a dysregulation of emotion-processing circuitry. Gender differences in how emotions are processed and relative experience with emotion processing might help to explain some of the disparities in the prevalence of MDD between women and men. This study sought to explore how gender and depression status relate to emotion processing. Methods: This study employed a 2 (MDD status) × 2 (gender) factorial design to explore differences in classifications of posed facial emotional expressions (N=151). Results: For errors, there was an …

Person identification represents a unique category of semantic knowledge that is commonly impaired in Alzheimer's disease (AD), but has received relatively little investigation in patients with mild cognitive impairment (MCI). The current study examined the retrieval of semantic knowledge for famous names from three time epochs (recent, remote, and enduring) in two participant groups: 23 amnestic MCI (aMCI) patients and 23 healthy elderly controls. The aMCI group was less accurate and produced less semantic knowledge than controls for famous names. Names from the enduring period were recognized faster than both recent and remote names in both groups, and remote names …

The supply chains through which foods are produced, processed, and transported can have a significant impact on the environment in terms of the carbon dioxide (CO2) that is emitted during each of these phases; however, little research has incorporated information about environmental impact into supply chain scenarios. Moreover, many consumers are unaware of how their food choices may impact the environment in this way. To fill these gaps, a tool called CarbonScope was developed to show consumers the CO2 emissions associated with different food types and food transportation scenarios. A short training was designed that walks participants through various food …
