Profits, Supply And Hyv Adoption In Bangladesh, S Rahman, B Shankar Feb 2009

Profits, Supply And Hyv Adoption In Bangladesh, S Rahman, B Shankar

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

The adoption of HYVs (High Yielding Varieties), for increased farm profitability, and the accelerated supply of cereals are important objectives for Bangladesh agriculture. In this paper, we have investigated the manner in which price and non-price factor affect these three criteria, based upon a model of rational variety choice. The model is empirically implemented using translog profit functions and a switching regression framework, and applied to a cross-sectional farm-level dataset of Bangladeshi farms for the 1996 crop year. Results indicate that rice prices, land availability, irrigation, rural infrastructure, labour wages and prices of animal power services are important factors, while …

A Method For Digital Color Analysis Of Spalted Wood Using Scion Image Software, Sara Robinson, Peter Laks, Ethan J. Turnquist Feb 2009

A Method For Digital Color Analysis Of Spalted Wood Using Scion Image Software, Sara Robinson, Peter Laks, Ethan J. Turnquist

Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1

Color analysis of spalted wood surfaces requires a non-subjective, repeatable method for determining percent of pigmentation on the wood surface. Previously published methods used human visual perception with a square grid overlay to determine the percent of surface pigmentation. Our new method uses Scion Image©, a graphical software program used for grayscale and color analysis, to separate fungal pigments from the wood background. These human interface processes render the wood block into HSV (hue, saturation, value, within the RGB color space), allowing subtle and drastic color changes to be visualized, selected and analyzed by the software. Analysis with Scion Image© …

Drivers Of Inter-Annual Variability In Net Ecosystem Exchange In A Semi-Arid Savanna Ecosystem, South Africa, S. A. Archibald, A. Kirton, M. R. Van Der Merwe, R. J. Scholes, Christopher A. Williams, N. Hanan Feb 2009

Drivers Of Inter-Annual Variability In Net Ecosystem Exchange In A Semi-Arid Savanna Ecosystem, South Africa, S. A. Archibald, A. Kirton, M. R. Van Der Merwe, R. J. Scholes, Christopher A. Williams, N. Hanan

Geography

Inter-annual variability in primary production and ecosystem respiration was explored using eddy-covariance data at a semi-arid savanna site in the Kruger Park, South Africa. New methods of extrapolating night-time respiration to the entire day and filling gaps in eddy-covariance data in semi-arid systems were developed. Net ecosystem exchange (NEE) in these systems occurs as pulses associated with rainfall events, a pattern not well-represented in current standard gap-filling procedures developed primarily for temperate flux sites. They furthermore do not take into account the decrease in respiration at high soil temperatures. An artificial neural network (ANN) model incorporating these features predicted measured …

Antimicrobial Activity Of Sphaeranthus Indicus L., V. Duraipandiyan, P. Kannan, S. Ignacimuthu

Ethnobotanical Leaflets

Aerial parts and flowers of Sphaeranthus indicus were extracted with n-hexane, benzene, chloroform, ehtylacetate and acetone. The extracts were screened for their antimicrobial activity using in vitro disc diffusion method at concentrations of 5, 2.5 and 1.25 mg/disc. The Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) was tested using broth micro dilution method at concentrations ranging from 5 to 0.039 mg/ml. Significant antibacterial and antifungal activity was observed in hexane extract of flower and aerial parts. The flower extract showed MIC as 0.15 mg/ml against Staphylococcus aureus and the highest MIC (5 mg/ml) was noted for S. epidermidis. The n-hexane extracts of flower …

Preliminary Studies Into The Hypolipidemic Activity Of Various Parts Of Capparis Decidua, Neelkamal Chahlia

Ethnobotanical Leaflets

The effect of various extracts (50% ethanolic) of Capparis decidua on lipid profile of streptozotocin diabetic rats was studied. The extract was administered to the diabetic models for 30days. The extract produced a significant (p<0.05) dose-dependent decrease in the levels of total cholesterol (TC), Triacylglycerol (TG), low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (LDL cholesterol), with a significant increase in the level High-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (HDL-C).The extracts of Capparis deciduas prove to have a hypolipidemic potential.

Hepatoprotective Effect Of Rheum Emodi Roots (Revand Chini) And Akseer-E-Jigar Against Paracetamol-Induced Hepatotoxicity In Rats, M. S. Akhtar, M. Amin, Maqsood Ahmad, Alamgeer Alamgeer Feb 2009

Hepatoprotective Effect Of Rheum Emodi Roots (Revand Chini) And Akseer-E-Jigar Against Paracetamol-Induced Hepatotoxicity In Rats, M. S. Akhtar, M. Amin, Maqsood Ahmad, Alamgeer Alamgeer

Ethnobotanical Leaflets

Hepatoprotective effects of Rheum emodi roots and their aqueous and methanolic extracts were studied against liver damage induced by paracetamol in albino rats. In addition, the effects of herbal preparation, Akseer-e- Jigar and a control drug, silymarin were also studied. Pretreatment and post-treatment hepatoprotective effects of all these drugs were determined. The prevention of liver damage and curative effects of the drugs were judged by changes in serum ALT, AST, ALP, albumin and bilirubin (total and direct) levels. Powdered Rheum emodi roots (1 and 1.5 g/kg) and their aqueous extract did not significantly affect serum enzymes, albumin and bilirubin levels. …

Phytochemistry And Ethanopharmacological Studies On Rubia Cordifolia Linn. (Rubiaceae), M. Kannan, A.J.A.Ranjit Singh, M. Narayanan Feb 2009

Phytochemistry And Ethanopharmacological Studies On Rubia Cordifolia Linn. (Rubiaceae), M. Kannan, A.J.A.Ranjit Singh, M. Narayanan

Ethnobotanical Leaflets

Ethanolic extracts of the leaves of Rubia cordifolia L. (Rubiaceae) (ERC) were investigated for their phytocompounds, in vitro and in vivo immunopharmacological properties. Immunomodulatory effects of this plant extract were proved in Cyclophosphamide (CP) -induced immunosuppressed animal models. Albino rats were treated with the aqueous extract of ERC and Cyclophosphamide. The Total count (TC) and Differential count (DC) of microphages and blood clotting assay were affected due to the suppressive effect of Cyclophosphamide. Administration of plant extract to CP- exposed animals resulted in enhanced immune responses.
