Inositol Phospholipid And Tyrosine Phosphorylation Signaling In The Biology Of Hematopoietic Stem Cells, Amy L. Hazen Feb 2009

Inositol Phospholipid And Tyrosine Phosphorylation Signaling In The Biology Of Hematopoietic Stem Cells, Amy L. Hazen

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Blood cells are continuously produced throughout our lifetime by a rare pluripotent cell that primarily resides in the adult bone marrow. This hematopoietic stem cell (HSC) must maintain a careful balance between self-renewal, differentiation and apoptosis in order to support hematopoiesis for such a long duration. Understanding the mechanism of balance between these fates is crucial to our understanding and clinical application of these cells.

From previous studies, we know Src homology 2 domain containing 5' inositol phosphatase 1 (SHIP) plays an important role in HSC homeostasis and function. Most interestingly SHIP impacts HSC homing to the bone marrow niche. …

Genomic And Biochemical Approaches In The Discovery Of Mechanisms For Selective Neuronal Vulnerability To Oxidative Stress, Xinkun Wang, Asma Zaidi, Ranu Pal, Alexander S. Garrett, Rogelio Braceras, Xue-Wen Chen, Mary L. Michaelis, Elias K. Michaelis

Faculty and Staff Publications

Background: Oxidative stress (OS) is an important factor in brain aging and neurodegenerative diseases. Certain neurons in different brain regions exhibit selective vulnerability to OS. Currently little is known about the underlying mechanisms of this selective neuronal vulnerability. The purpose of this study was to identify endogenous factors that predispose vulnerable neurons to OS by employing genomic and biochemical approaches.

Results: In this report, using in vitro neuronal cultures, ex vivo organotypic brain slice cultures and acute brain slice preparations, we established that cerebellar granule (CbG) and hippocampal CA1 neurons were significantly more sensitive to OS (induced by paraquat) than …

Adiposity, Stress, And Stigmatization: A Biopsychosocial Approach To Cardiovascular Disease Prediction, Kristi E. White Feb 2009

Adiposity, Stress, And Stigmatization: A Biopsychosocial Approach To Cardiovascular Disease Prediction, Kristi E. White

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of the present study was to use a biopsychosocial approach to investigate the role of body image concerns and appearance-related evaluation stress in the relationship between adiposity and cardiovascular reactivity and recovery. Participants included 106 Caucasian female undergraduates at the University of South Florida. The laboratory procedure consisted of resting baseline, speech preparation and delivery, and recovery phases. Participants also completed a variety of body image questionnaires. To manipulate appearance-related evaluation stress, participants were randomly assigned to present their speech to a video camera or an audio recorder. Overall adiposity was measured as body mass index (BMI) and …

Regulation Of Distinct Septin Rings In A Single Cell By Elm1p And Gin4p Kinases, Bradley S. Demay, Rebecca A. Meseroll, Patricia Occhipinti, Amy S. Gladfelter Feb 2009

Regulation Of Distinct Septin Rings In A Single Cell By Elm1p And Gin4p Kinases, Bradley S. Demay, Rebecca A. Meseroll, Patricia Occhipinti, Amy S. Gladfelter

Dartmouth Scholarship

Septins are conserved, GTP-binding proteins that assemble into higher order structures, including filaments and rings with varied cellular functions. Using four-dimensional quantitative fluorescence microscopy of Ashbya gossypii fungal cells, we show that septins can assemble into morphologically distinct classes of rings that vary in dimensions, intensities, and positions within a single cell. Notably, these different classes coexist and persist for extended times, similar in appearance and behavior to septins in mammalian neurons and cultured cells. We demonstrate that new septin proteins can add through time to assembled rings, indicating that septins may continue to polymerize during ring maturation. Different classes …

Creating, Evaluating, And Improving Humorous Cartoons Related To Design Principles For Gifted Education Programs, Audrey C. Rule, J. S. Schneider Feb 2009

Creating, Evaluating, And Improving Humorous Cartoons Related To Design Principles For Gifted Education Programs, Audrey C. Rule, J. S. Schneider

Open Educational Resources

Humor through cartoons is an interesting way to engage students in learning course content. The purpose of this study was to document the process of graduate student-made cartoons that portrayed content about principles of designing gifted education programs. Seventeen graduate students enrolled in an introductory gifted education course identified important content ideas centering on characteristics of gifted students, identification, advocacy, and gifted programming. The students created humorous cartoons related to this content. Each student chose four background scenes from sixteen choices, transforming them into complete cartoons by drawing in extra objects, figures, details, added captions, talking balloons, or other features. …

Aristotle's Generic Being, Edward C. Halper Feb 2009

Aristotle's Generic Being, Edward C. Halper

The Society for Ancient Greek Philosophy Newsletter

Being is not a genus in the strict sense because there is no categorial nature that is common to all beings. This paper argues that Aristotle nevertheless treats being as a genus, that this treatment is what he means in Metaphysics Gamma by the science that studies being qua being, and that what is common to all beings is not some particular nature, but their each having a nature. This nature is its ousia, and in Gamma, these ousiai are the primary beings to which other beings are related, though later in the Metaphysics, in a different stage …

Scholarship In Action: Transforming Community And Higher Education, Nancy Cantor Feb 2009

Scholarship In Action: Transforming Community And Higher Education, Nancy Cantor

Chancellor's Collection

Now is the time, as the Kellogg Commission has observed, for colleges and universities "to reshape our historic agreement with the American people so that it fits the times that are emerging instead of the times that have passed.” In the new world being forged by shared knowledge, universities are superbly positioned to transform themselves and their communities. We find ourselves on new ground, inspired by the possibilities for change, thinking about roles we can and should play in a new America. In this, we're invited by the social-legal theorist, Susan Sturm at Columbia to consider the “architecture of inclusion,” to …
