Florida Distance Learning Task Force Final Report, Florida Distance Learning Task Force.

Online Learning Guidelines and Reports

The Florida Distance Learning Task Force was created through HB 7105 by the 2008 Legislature. The nine-member Task Force was appointed by the Chancellors of the State University System and the Florida College System with specific legislative assignments (Appendix A). These assignments reflected several policy goals which provided a foundation for the work of the Task Force. These goals included: 1) facilitating maximum affordable access for students to complete degrees and transfer credits; 2) achieving increased cost‐effectiveness in the development and delivery of undergraduate distance learning courses and degree programs; 3) improving instructional and faculty effectiveness; 4) advancing technology innovations; …

Communication Free Robot Swarming, Zachary C. Gray Feb 2009

Communication Free Robot Swarming, Zachary C. Gray

Theses and Dissertations

As the military use of unmanned aerial vehicles increases, a growing need for novel strategies to control these systems exists. One such method for controlling many unmanned aerial vehicles simultaneously is the through the use of swarm algorithms. This research explores a swarm robotic algorithm developed by Kadrovach implemented on Pioneer Robots in a real-world environment. An adaptation of his visual sensor is implemented using stereo vision as the primary method of sensing the environment. The swarm members are prohibited from explicitly communicating other than passively through the environment. The resulting implementation produces a communication free swarming algorithm. The algorithm …

Does Endurance Training Modify The Decrease In Skeletal Mass And Changes In The Body Composition With Restricted Caloric Intake?, Samantha M. Manning

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

The common practice among many, including athletes and military personnel, when attempting to lose weight is to limit caloric intake and also to burn off excess calories through exercise.

Our goal was to measure the effects of graded reductions of energy availability on bone mass and body composition in young adult female rats. Reduced energy availability was achieved by increasing exercise energy expenditure and/or reducing caloric intake. After acclimation, 72 rats (5-mo-old) were randomly assigned to one of 6 groups. ADLIB-EX and ADLIB-SED were fed AIN-93M ad lib. Energy restricted, exercised groups (ER20-EX & ER40-EX) and sedentary energy-restricted groups (ER20-SED …

Fenugreek Extract Supplementation Has No Effect On The Hormonal Profile Of Resitance-Trained Males, Brandon Bushey, Lem W. Taylor, Colin W. Wilborn, Chris Poole, Cliffa A. Foster, Bill Campbell, Richard B. Kreider, Darryn S. Willoughby

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

Fenugreek is herb that has several purported uses in animal models. Despite no substantiated claims in human research models, fenugreek has been marketed in dietary products as having anabolic potential for resistance trained athletes. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to investigate the potential anabolic effects of fenugreek extract supplementation in conjunction with a controlled resistance training program. METHODS: Forty-five resistance trained males were matched by fat free mass and randomly assigned to ingest in a double blind manner capsules containing 500mg of a placebo (PL) (N = 24, 20.1 ± 2.6 yr, 85.5 ±13.4 kg, 177.00 ± 6.1 …

Effects Of The Pathogenic Water Mold Saprolegnia Ferax On Survival Of Amphibian Larvae, John M. Romansic, Kristin A. Diez, Elise M. Higashi, James E. Johnson, Andrew R. Blaustein

All Faculty Scholarship for the College of the Sciences

Infectious diseases are a significant threat to worldwide biodiversity. Amphibian declines, a significant part of current biodiversity losses, are in many cases associated with infectious disease. Water molds are one group of pathogens affecting amphibians on a worldwide basis. Although water molds have been studied extensively for their effects on host embryos, little information is available about how they affect post-embryonic amphibians. We tested the effects of one species of water mold, Saprolegnia ferax, in a comparative study of larvae of 4 amphibian species: Pseudacris regilla (Pacific treefrog), Rana cascadae (Cascades frog), Ambystoma macrodactylum (long-toed salamander), and R. aurora (red-legged …

Immunological Assessment Of Plant-Derived Avian Flu H5/Ha1 Variants., S Spitsin, V Andrianov, N Pogrebnyak, Y Smirnov, N Borisjuk, C Portocarrero, V Veguilla, H Koprowski, M Golovkin

Department of Cancer Biology Faculty Papers

Polypeptide variants of the HA1 antigenic domain of the H5N1 avian influenza virus hemagglutinin (HA) molecule were produced in plants using transient and stable expression systems and fused with His/c-myc tags or with mouse or human Fc antibody fragments. The resulting peptides were purified and used for intramuscular immunization of mice. While the recombinant HA1 variants induced a significant serum humoral immune response in the mice, none of the HA1 preparations induced virus-neutralizing antibodies. Fusion with the Fc fragment improved overall yield of the constructs and allowed purification requiring only a single step, but led to no detectable fusion-related enhancement …
