The Dynamic Nature Of Knowledge: Insights From A Dynamic Field Model Of Children’S Novel Noun Generalization, Larissa K. Samuelson, Anne R. Schutte, Jessica S. Horst Mar 2009

The Dynamic Nature Of Knowledge: Insights From A Dynamic Field Model Of Children’S Novel Noun Generalization, Larissa K. Samuelson, Anne R. Schutte, Jessica S. Horst

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

This paper examines the tie between knowledge and behavior in a noun generalization context. An experiment directly comparing noun generalizations of children at the same point in development in forced-choice and yes/no tasks reveals task-specific differences in the way children’s knowledge of nominal categories is brought to bear in a moment. To understand the cognitive system that produced these differences, the real-time decision processes in these tasks were instantiated in a dynamic field model. The model captures both qualitative and quantitative differences in performance across tasks and reveals constraints on the nature of children’s accumulated knowledge. Additional simulations of developmental …

Sustainable Commerce: Public Health Law And Environmental Law Provide Tools For Industry And Government To Construct Globally-Competitive Green Economies, T. Rick Irvin, Peter A. Appel Mar 2009

Sustainable Commerce: Public Health Law And Environmental Law Provide Tools For Industry And Government To Construct Globally-Competitive Green Economies, T. Rick Irvin, Peter A. Appel

Southern Illinois University Law Journal

Sustainable commerce initiatives are creating new goods and services that will position the US economy to aggressively compete in global markets. “Sustainable commerce” refers to products and practices which minimize environmental impacts, optimize commercial value, and realize public as well as private environmental benchmarks. How law can create incentives for sustainable commerce to flourish remains a question. In this article, Professor Appel and Dr. Irvin show how industry and state and local governments have not fully utilized the existing public health and environmental legal infrastructure as tools to craft sustainable commerce initiatives. They then outline a private/public governance paradigm in …

Functional Conservation Of Asxl2, A Murine Homolog For The Drosophila Enhancer Of Trithorax And Polycomb Group Gene Asx, Heather A. Baskind, Lucy Na, Quanhong Ma, Mayur P. Patel, David Geenen, Q Ting Wang Mar 2009

Functional Conservation Of Asxl2, A Murine Homolog For The Drosophila Enhancer Of Trithorax And Polycomb Group Gene Asx, Heather A. Baskind, Lucy Na, Quanhong Ma, Mayur P. Patel, David Geenen, Q Ting Wang

Peer Reviewed Articles

Background: Polycomb-group (PcG) and trithorax-group (trxG) proteins regulate histone methylation to establish repressive and active chromatin configurations at target loci, respectively. These chromatin configurations are passed on from mother to daughter cells, thereby causing heritable changes in gene expression. The activities of PcG and trxG proteins are regulated by a special class of proteins known as Enhancers of trithorax and Polycomb (ETP). The Drosophila gene Additional sex combs (Asx) encodes an ETP protein and mutations in Asx enhance both PcG and trxG mutant phenotypes. The mouse and human genomes each contain three Asx homologues, Asx-like 1, 2, …

Detection Of Novel Sars-Like And Other Coronaviruses In Bats From Kenya, Suxiang Tong, Christina Conrardy, Sujsan Ruone

KIP Articles

Diverse coronaviruses have been identified in bats from several continents but not from Africa. We identified group 1 and 2 coronaviruses in bats in Kenya, including SARS-related coronaviruses. The sequence diversity suggests that bats are well-established reservoirs for and likely sources of coronaviruses for many species, including humans.

Functional Differences Within A Guild Of Tropical Mammalian Frugivores, Jedidiah F. Brodie, Olga E. Helmy, Warren Y. Brockelman, John L. Maron

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Many plants interact with groups of mutualist pollinators and seed dispersers. A key issue for both basic ecology and conservation is whether the different species within these guilds of mutualist animals are functionally equivalent. Comparing the relative effects of sympatric mutualists is important for understanding the evolution of multispecies mutualisms and for predicting mutualism stability in the face of anthropogenic change. However, empirical comparisons of the population-level impacts of mutualist animals on their host plant are rare, particularly for seed dispersal mutualisms in species-rich ecosystems. We compared the influence of three seed-dispersing tropical mammals, lar gibbons (Hylobates lar), …

Changes in vegetation and fuels were evaluated from measurements taken before and after fuel reduction treatments (prescribed. re, mechanical treatments, and the combination of the two) at 12 Fire and Fire Surrogate (FFS) sites located in forests with a surface. re regime across the conterminous United States. To test the relative effectiveness of fuel reduction treatments and their effect on ecological parameters we used an information-theoretic approach on a suite of 12 variables representing the overstory (basal area and live tree, sapling, and snag density), the understory (seedling density, shrub cover, and native and alien herbaceous species richness), and the …

Why Is Torture Different And How Different Is It?, Sherry F. Colb Mar 2009

Why Is Torture Different And How Different Is It?, Sherry F. Colb

Cornell Law Faculty Publications

Almost every serious commentator to address the moral and legal question of torture has taken for granted the proposition that the infliction of torture is a sufficiently grave evil to require a distinctly demanding moral scrutiny, one that categorically sets torture apart from other terrible things (including killing) that human beings do to one another. To borrow from the Supreme Court's death penalty jurisprudence, most people agree that torture is "different. "

Under the Eighth Amendment, the fact that death is different does not rule out its application; it simply alters the relevant procedural and substantive standards. By contrast, many …

Drug Release And Its Relationship With Kinetic And Thermodynamic Parameters Of Drug Sorption Onto Polylactide, Starch Acetate, Wheat Gluten And Soy Protein Fibers, Weijie Xu

College of Education and Human Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Drug release and its relationship with kinetic and thermodynamic parameters of drug sorption onto biodegradable and biocompatible fibers made of polylactic acid (PLA), starch acetate (SA), wheat gluten (WG) and soy protein (SP) have been studied using Diclofenac, 5 Fluorouracil (5-Fu) and Metformin as drug models. To understand drug release from these four fibers using sorption, kinetic and thermodynamic parameters, such as the diffusion coefficient, activation energy for diffusion, affinity, and sorption enthalpy and entropy, have been investigated. Quantitative relationship between drug release and drug loading concentration, affinity, and activation energy for diffusion was established to predict initial bursts and …

Water Scarcity, Conflict, And Security In A Climate Change World: Challenges And Opportunities For International Law And Policy, Gabriel Eckstein

Faculty Scholarship

Although climate change is expected to have major consequences that affect the global environment in its broadest sense, one of the earliest and most direct impacts will be on Earth’s fresh water systems. While some regions will experience increased precipitation, others will suffer serious scarcity. Among others, consequences are likely to include severe flooding, extreme droughts, and meandering border-rivers. This, in turn, will affect human migration patterns, population growths, agricultural activities, economic development, and the environment. This article explores the impact that climate change will have on regional and global freshwater resources and the resulting legal and policy implications that …

Getting Beyond Religion As Science: "Unstifling" Worldview Formation In American Public Education, Barry P. Mcdonald Mar 2009

Getting Beyond Religion As Science: "Unstifling" Worldview Formation In American Public Education, Barry P. Mcdonald

Washington and Lee Law Review

Since ancient times, Western civilization has witnessed a great debate over a simple but profound question: From whence did we come? Two major worldviews have dominated that debate: a theistic worldview holding that we, and the world in which we live, are the purposeful product of a supernatural creator; and a materialistic worldview holding that we are the product of unintelligenta nd random naturaflo rces. This debate rose to the fore with Darwin's publication of his theory of evolution and the development of the modern scientific establishment. In America, it initially took its most conspicuous form in efforts by creationists …

Stt Event Stream Feature To Assist Software Testing Of Impantable Devices In St. Jude Medical, Yong J. Park

Master's Theses

During development and testing of the pacemaker and defibrillator device functionality, engineers in the cardiac rhythm management industry use a patient simulator to ensure device functionality properly before device is tested with an animal or a human. The patient simulator is also used in the formal device product testing. In St. Jude Medical, a patient simulator called Simulation Test Tool (STT) has been developed and used by engineers in the company. While the Heart Simulator (HS) feature based on physiological heart model in the STT has been served as a main cardiac rhythm simulation feature, there has been an increasing …

Attaining Moral Knowledge In The Church And Models Of Adult Learning, Richard Shields Mar 2009

Attaining Moral Knowledge In The Church And Models Of Adult Learning, Richard Shields

Journal of Catholic Education

For the Holy See this signifies a loss of a sense of sin and reconciliation, rightly connecting moral consciousness and faith in salvation with sacramental celebration. Cultural studies underscore the importance of ritual practices as an essential element of religion’s ability to deal with the experience of moral evil. However, decline in the frequency of confession may also be complicated by indifference among North American Catholics to current roles and power relations in the Church. In light of moral individualism in society and new ways of envisioning the Church fostered by Vatican II, the challenge of moral education in the …

Prevotella bivia is an obligatory anaerobic, gram-negative rod, which often produces a detectable beta-lactamase. To date, there has been only 3 descriptions of septic arthritis secondary to this microorganism in a patients pre-existing sever joint disease like rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis or after joint prosthesis. We are reporting the first case of septic arthritis due to Prevotella bivia in a patient with no pre-existing joint symptoms.

Shark Teeth Classification, Tom Brown, Sally Creel, Velda Lee Mar 2009

Shark Teeth Classification, Tom Brown, Sally Creel, Velda Lee

Faculty Articles

On a recent autumn afternoon at Harmony Leland Elementary in Mableton, Georgia, students in a fifth-grade science class investigated the essential process of classification--the act of putting things into groups according to some common characteristics or attributes. While they may have honed these skills earlier in the week by grouping their own shoes or school supplies, this class provided the unique opportunity to classify objects that are inherently fascinating to students--shark teeth fossils! This article describes how by using the teeth to estimate the length of ancient sharks, students got a classification activity they could really sink their teeth into.

Synthesis And Evaluation Of Lanthanide Ion Dota-Tetraamide Complexes Bearing Peripheral Hydroxyl Groups, Azhar Pasha, Mai Lin, Gyula Tircso, Cynthia L. Rostollan, Mark Woods, Garry Kiefer, A. Dean Sherry, Xiankai Sun

Chemistry Faculty Publications and Presentations

The use of lanthanide-based contrast agents for magnetic resonance imaging has become an integral component of this important diagnostic modality. These inert chelates typically possess high thermodynamic stability constants that serve as a predictor for in vivo stability and low toxicity. Recently, a new class of contrast agents was reported having a significantly lower degree of thermodynamic stability while exhibiting biodistribution profiles indicative of high stability under biological conditions. These observations are suggestive that the nature of contrast agent stability is also dependent upon the kinetics of complex dissociation, a feature of potential importance when contemplating the design of new …

Phylogeography And Conservation Of The Arroyo Toad (Bufo Californicus), Robert Edward Lovich

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The Arroyo Toad (Bufo cakfomicus) is an endangered species found in rivers of southern California, USA and northern Baja California, Mexico. It has experienced population declines throughout its range, as a result of urbanization, hydrologic alterations, and overall habitat loss. As part of the Recovery Plan for this species, it was determined that more research was needed to assist in management decisions. One of those research needs was to better understand the intraspecific genetic variation within the Arroyo Toad. I conducted a range wide genetic study of the Arroyo Toad to uncover lineages and genetic variation among and between all …
