Environmentally Sustainable Biofuels - Biodiesel, Palligarnai T. Vasudevan Mar 2009

Environmentally Sustainable Biofuels - Biodiesel, Palligarnai T. Vasudevan

Bioenergy - II: Fuels and Chemicals from Renewable Resources

Biodiesel is a clean-burning fuel produced from grease, vegetable oils, or animal fats. Biodiesel is produced by transesterification of oils with short-chain alcohols or by the esterification of fatty acids. The transesterification reaction consists of transforming triglycerides into fatty acid alkyl esters, in the presence of an alcohol, such as methanol or ethanol, and a catalyst, such as an alkali or acid, with glycerol as a by-product. Due to diminishing petroleum reserves and the deleterious environmental consequences of exhaust gases from petroleum diesel, biodiesel has attracted attention during the past few years as a renewable and environmentally friendly fuel. Since …

Supply And Properties Of Agricultural Residues Suitable For Bioenergy Applications, Fernando Preto, Irene Coyle

Bioenergy - II: Fuels and Chemicals from Renewable Resources

Agriculture is one of Canada’s largest industries and the residues left over from farming, milling and the off spec crops that are produced every year are present across the country. The quantity and quality of these residues as potential fuels have been analysed, including a comparison of the financial benefits and costs to selecting agricultural feedstocks for heat and power projects. A variety of fuels have been assessed, including raw and densified biomass, to understand the range in transportation costs, front and back end material handling and boiler selection. These fuels include: corn stover, corn cob, switchgrass pellets, whole canola, …

A Simulation Model Of Combined Biogas, Bioethanol And Protein Fodder Co-Production In Organic Farming, Piotr Oleskowicz-Popiel Mar 2009

A Simulation Model Of Combined Biogas, Bioethanol And Protein Fodder Co-Production In Organic Farming, Piotr Oleskowicz-Popiel

Bioenergy - II: Fuels and Chemicals from Renewable Resources

Anaerobic digestion based on animal manure and energy crops is very effective technology to provide energy and reduce green-house gasses emission, in particular ammonia and methane. Besides, utilisation of biogas contributes to reduction of CO2 emission. On the other hand, production of bioethanol from starchy or lignocellulosic materials can supply farmers with liquid fuel necessary for agriculture machinery. Therefore, there is a need for development an effective biorefinery for sustainable energy production in organic agriculture. Due to large amount of existing technologies and many ways for co-production of feed and fuel, the application of process engineering tools is required. The …

AFTERNOON CONCURRENT TRACK 1: SUSTAINABILITY IN THE K-16 CLASSROOM Moderator Gale Sinatra Student Union Room 207 Ellen Ebert – Using the STS/EEE Model in 6-12 Curriculum to Understand the Sustainability Issues Related to the Colorado River System Abstract: Beginning in 1982, the National Science Teachers Association called for curriculum designers to develop materials that demonstrate the interconnectedness among science, technology and societal issues while presenting both positive and negative influences. This session will focus on using the STS/EEE learning model to design curriculum for secondary science that emphasizes sustainability issues focused on the Colorado River system. The presentation will outline …

A Discontinuous Rna Platform Mediates Rna Virus Replication: Building An Integrated Model For Rna-Based Regulation Of Viral Processes, Baodong Wu, Judit Pogany, Hong Na, Beth L. Nicholson, Peter D. Nagy, K. Andrew White

Plant Pathology Faculty Publications

Plus-strand RNA viruses contain RNA elements within their genomes that mediate a variety of fundamental viral processes. The traditional view of these elements is that of local RNA structures. This perspective, however, is changing due to increasing discoveries of functional viral RNA elements that are formed by long-range RNA-RNA interactions, often spanning thousands of nucleotides. The plus-strand RNA genomes of tombusviruses exemplify this concept by possessing different long-range RNA-RNA interactions that regulate both viral translation and transcription. Here we report that a third fundamental tombusvirus process, viral genome replication, requires a long-range RNA-based interaction spanning approximately 3000 nts. In vivo …

African American Women Superintendents: Their Point Of Exit, Minta Maxine Downing Mar 2009

African American Women Superintendents: Their Point Of Exit, Minta Maxine Downing

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Only recently have scholars paid attention to the African American woman superintendent who is an anomaly in this powerful leadership position in public education. Additionally, only a few academicians have asked why talented African American women who successfully obtain the superintendency exit the position so quickly. The primary purpose of this phenomenological focused qualitative study was to identify and document the experiences contributing to the decisions of selected former African American women superintendents to exit, voluntarily or involuntarily, their public school superintendencies and not to seek another one, choosing instead to pursue other positions, either in education or in a …

A Hybrid Templated-Based Composite Classification System, Michael A. Turnbaugh Mar 2009

A Hybrid Templated-Based Composite Classification System, Michael A. Turnbaugh

Theses and Dissertations

An automatic target classification system contains a classifier which reads a feature as an input and outputs a class label. Typically, the feature is a vector of real numbers. Other features can be non-numeric, such as a string of symbols or alphabets. One method of improving the performance of an automatic classification system is through combining two or more independent classifiers that are complementary in nature. Complementary classifiers are observed by finding an optimal method for partitioning the problem space. For example, the individual classifiers may operate to identify specific objects. Another method may be to use classifiers that operate …
