Laser Dot Projection Photogrammetry And Force Balance Measurement Techniques For Flapping Wing Micro Air Vehicles, David H. Curtis Mar 2009

Laser Dot Projection Photogrammetry And Force Balance Measurement Techniques For Flapping Wing Micro Air Vehicles, David H. Curtis

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this research was to develop testing methods capable of analyzing the performance of a miniature flapping-wing mechanism that can later be adapted to a flapping wing micro air vehicle (MAV). A previously designed and built flapping only mechanism was used for testing, while a previously designed flapping and pitch mechanism was fabricated utilizing an Objet Eden 500V 3-dimensional printer and its operation demonstrated. The flapping mechanism was mounted on a six component force balance. Force and moment data were collected for a variety of wing sets at different flapping frequencies. The testing was conducted using wings composed …

Transformational Processes And Learner Outcomes For Online Learning: An Activity Theory Case Study Of Spanish Students, Joseph M. Terantino Mar 2009

Transformational Processes And Learner Outcomes For Online Learning: An Activity Theory Case Study Of Spanish Students, Joseph M. Terantino

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this exploratory study was to examine the actions of online language learners from an activity theoretical perspective. It also attempted to explain how the students' learning outcomes evolved from their online learning experiences. This explanation placed an emphasis on the learners' previous experiences, defining their activity systems, the use of mediational tools, and the resolution of contradictions. Within this activity theoretical case study a background survey, four interviews, and three field observations were conducted with seven foreign language students of an online Spanish course. The students' on-screen actions were recorded and subsequently documented in a video episode …

Terror Management And Self-Enhancement: The Moderating Role Of Self-Esteem And Need For Closure, Nathan A. Heflick Mar 2009

Terror Management And Self-Enhancement: The Moderating Role Of Self-Esteem And Need For Closure, Nathan A. Heflick

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Terror management theory posits that self-esteem ultimately protects people from death anxiety. Much research has demonstrated that individuals reminded of death tend to self-enhance. However, more recent research suggests that need for closure and self-esteem might moderate these findings, but no research has directly tested this. It was hypothesized that for people high in self-esteem, mortality salience will not affect self-enhancement. However, for individuals low in self-esteem, it will either increase enhancement (if low in closure) or increase verification (if high in closure). These hypotheses were fully supported using Christian's perceptions of God's love as the dependent variable. Implications for …

Method Utilizing The Tobacco Phylloplanin Promoter For Expression Of Nucleic Acids As Gene Products Directed To Aerial Surfaces Of Plants, George J. Wagner, Ryan W. Shepard Mar 2009

Method Utilizing The Tobacco Phylloplanin Promoter For Expression Of Nucleic Acids As Gene Products Directed To Aerial Surfaces Of Plants, George J. Wagner, Ryan W. Shepard

Plant and Soil Sciences Faculty Patents

A method and system is provided for generating excreted gene products in a plant which includes generating a nucleic acid fusion construct comprising a phylloplanin promoter and a selected non-phylloplanin nucleic acid sequence whose transcription product is to be expressed and delivered to an aerial surface of a plant. The method includes transfecting plant cells with the nucleic acid fusion construct and allowing the plant cells to express the non-phylloplanin nucleic acid sequence transcription product which is then excreted from the plant cells to the aerial surfaces.

Royal Images And Rebel Ideals: Contradictory Symbols In American Revolutionary Newspaper Nameplates, Autumn Lorimer Linford Mar 2009

Royal Images And Rebel Ideals: Contradictory Symbols In American Revolutionary Newspaper Nameplates, Autumn Lorimer Linford

Theses and Dissertations

Historians have long claimed that the newspaper printers of the American Revolution were instrumental in bringing about Independence. By focusing solely on the written words left behind by these men, however, researchers have erroneously believed the printers belonged exclusively to either the patriot or Tory camps. The masthead symbols chosen by the printers to represent their newspapers offer a more objective measure of their partisan affiliations than a textual analysis of the content. The printers marked major changes in their political ideologies by inserting and deleting political symbols in their newspaper mastheads. This study examines the use and meanings of …

Pathogenic Adaptation Of Intracellular Bacteria By Rewiring A Cis-Regulatory Input Function, Suzanne E. Osborne, Don Walthers, Ana M. Tomljenovic, David T. Mulder, Uma Silphaduang, Nancy Duong, Michael J. Lowden Mar 2009

Pathogenic Adaptation Of Intracellular Bacteria By Rewiring A Cis-Regulatory Input Function, Suzanne E. Osborne, Don Walthers, Ana M. Tomljenovic, David T. Mulder, Uma Silphaduang, Nancy Duong, Michael J. Lowden

Dartmouth Scholarship

The acquisition of DNA by horizontal gene transfer enables bacteria to adapt to previously unexploited ecological niches. Although horizontal gene transfer and mutation of protein-coding sequences are well-recognized forms of pathogen evolution, the evolutionary significance of cis-regulatory mutations in creating phenotypic diversity through altered transcriptional outputs is not known. We show the significance of regulatory mutation for pathogen evolution by mapping and then rewiring a cis-regulatory module controlling a gene required for murine typhoid. Acquisition of a binding site for the Salmonella pathogenicity island-2 regulator, SsrB, enabled the srfN gene, ancestral to the Salmonella genus, to play a …

Method For The Modulation Of Function Of Transcription Factors, Kenneth S. Zuckerman, Richard Y. Liu Mar 2009

Method For The Modulation Of Function Of Transcription Factors, Kenneth S. Zuckerman, Richard Y. Liu

USF Patents

There is provided a method of modulating the function of a transcription factor by administering an effective amount of an oligonucleotide containing optimal nucleotide binding site for the transcription factor. A therapeutic agent having an effective amount of an oligonucleotide for modulating function of a transcription factor and a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier is also provided. Also provided is a treatment of patients having illnesses in which the activation of transcription factors plays a role by administering to a patient an effective amount of an oligonucleotide which competitively binds the related transcription factor.
