Neurotensin Regulates Gabaergic Activity In The Ca1 Region Of Rat Hippocampus, Shanshan Li Mar 2009

Neurotensin Regulates Gabaergic Activity In The Ca1 Region Of Rat Hippocampus, Shanshan Li

Theses and Dissertations

Neurotensin (NT) is a tridecapeptide that interacts with three NT receptors, NTS1, NTS2 and NTS3. NT has been reported to modulate GABA release in various brain regions under both physiological and pathological conditions. A beneficial role for NT in correcting GABA dysfunction/deficiency has been implied. However, the cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying NT-induced increases in GABAergic function remain ill-defined. Here, we first examined the effects of NT on GABAergic transmission and the underlying cellular and signaling mechanisms in the hippocampus of juvenile rats. We found that NT dose-dependently increased sIPSC frequency in CA1 pyramidal neurons without affecting the amplitude of …

The Role Of Src Suppressed C-Kinase Substrate In Primary Sensory Neurons, Christopher P. Irmen Mar 2009

The Role Of Src Suppressed C-Kinase Substrate In Primary Sensory Neurons, Christopher P. Irmen

Theses and Dissertations

SSeCKS (src suppressed C kinase substrate) is an A kinase anchoring protein that has been localized in the peripheral and central nervous systems. Previous studies have suggested that SSeCKS is restricted to a population of small-diameter neurons in the dorsal root ganglia whose central axons terminate in superficial laminae of the spinal cord dorsal horn. This SSeCKS containing population displayed labeling characteristics consistent with non-peptidergic C-fibers and occasionally contained nerve growth factor receptors. The present study investigated the hypothesis that SSeCKS is found in a subgroup of primary sensory neurons that are involved in transmission of nociceptive stimuli. This was …

A Morphological Analysis Of A "Confounding" Population Of Castanea In Northwest Georgia, Jamie Dinkins Mar 2009

A Morphological Analysis Of A "Confounding" Population Of Castanea In Northwest Georgia, Jamie Dinkins

Honors Theses

Two species of Castanea Mill. (Fagacae) are native to North America: the tall, forest-type Castanea dentata (Marsh.) Borkh. and the smaller, shrubbier Castanea pumila (L.) Miller. There are two varieties of C. pumila: Castanea pumila var. pumila, and Castanea pumila var. ozarkensis (Johnson, 1988). In the early 1900s, chestnut blight caused by Cryphonectria parasitica (Murr.) Barr. reduced C. dentata to stumps and sprouts and severely diminished the abundance of both subspecies of C. pumila. Because Castanea species can apparently interbreed, restoration efforts have been complicated by possible hybridization between the two now shrubby species. One of these putative hybrid and …

In the early stages of viral infection, outcomes depend on a race between expansion of infection and the immune response generated to contain it. We combined in situ tetramer staining with in situ hybridization to visualize, map, and quantify relationships between immune effector cells and their targets in tissues. In simian immunodeficiency virus infections in macaques and lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus infections in mice, the magnitude and timing of the establishment of an excess of effector cells versus targets were found to correlate with the extent of control and the infection outcome (i.e., control and clearance versus partial or poor control …

Studia | Studio, Marc J. Neveu

Architecture

This paper sets out to propose that the use of history in a design studio may help to overcome some latent difficulties of the studio as a model of education. I will first discuss the role and nature of studio within the education of the architect and will reference my analysis to the findings of the Boyer Report and the research into “reflective practice” by the educator Donald Schön. While I do support the studio as described by the Boyer Report and Schön’s research, it is a model that has disadvantages. As an alternate proposal, I will then describe the …

A Statistical Approach To The Life Cycle Analysis Of Cumulus Clouds Selected In A Virtual Reality Environment, Thijs Heus, Harmen J.J. Jonker, Harry E.A. Van Den Akker, Eric J. Griffith, Michal Koutek, Frits H. Post Mar 2009

Post

Physics Faculty Publications

In this study, a new method is developed to investigate the entire life cycle of shallow cumuli in large eddy simulations. Although trained observers have no problem in distinguishing the different life stages of a cloud, this process proves difficult to automate, because cloud-splitting and cloud-merging events complicate the distinction between a single system divided in several cloudy parts and two independent systems that collided. Because the human perception is well equipped to capture and to make sense of these time-dependent three-dimensional features, a combination of automated constraints and human inspection in a three-dimensional virtual reality environment is used to …
