New Port Richey: Myth And History Of A City Built On Enchantment, Adam J. Carozza Mar 2009

New Port Richey: Myth And History Of A City Built On Enchantment, Adam J. Carozza

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This thesis aims to discover, understand and appreciate the history of New Port Richey. New Port Richey's growth was affected by many of the same social changes taking place all over Florida, most notably the coming of the railroad, the popularity of the automobile, and the land boom of the 1920s. Post-World War II prosperity, pest control, air conditioning, and interstate highways attracted people to this city nicknamed the "Gateway to Tropical Florida." Unique to this area was the Legend of Chasco, an invented tradition to draw tourists and new residents to the area, and the beautiful Pithlachascotee River meandering …

Comparison Of Replication-Competent, First Generation, And Helper-Dependent Adenoviral Vaccines, Eric A. Weaver, Pramod N. Nehete, Stephanie S. Buchl, Julien S. Senac, Donna Palmer, Philip Ng, K. Jagannadha Sastry, Michael A. Barry

Nebraska Center for Virology: Faculty Publications

All studies using human serotype 5 Adenovirus (Ad) vectors must address two major obstacles: safety and the presence of pre-existing neutralizing antibodies. Helper-Dependent (HD) Ads have been proposed as alternative vectors for gene therapy and vaccine development because they have an improved safety profile. To evaluate the potential of HD-Ad vaccines, we compared replication-competent (RC), first-generation (FG) and HD vectors for their ability to induce immune responses in mice. We show that RC-Ad5 and HD-Ad5 vectors generate stronger immune responses than FG-Ad5 vectors. HD-Ad5 vectors gave lower side effects than RC or FG-Ad, producing lower levels of tissue damage and …

A Capillary Electrophoresis Method For Evaluation Of Abeta Proteolysis In Vitro, Benjamin J. Alper, Walter K. Schmidt Mar 2009

A Capillary Electrophoresis Method For Evaluation Of Abeta Proteolysis In Vitro, Benjamin J. Alper, Walter K. Schmidt

Chemistry & Physics Faculty Publications

According to the amyloid hypothesis, Aβ peptides are neurotoxic and underlie development and progression of Alzheimer’s disease (AD). Multiple Aβ clearance mechanisms, including destruction of the peptides by proteolytic enzymes, are hypothesized to regulate physiological Aβ peptide levels. The insulin-degrading enzyme (IDE) is considered one of the predominant enzymes having Aβ degrading activity. Despite its putative role in protecting against AD, relatively few methods exist for studying IDE activity in vitro. We report the application of capillary electrophoresis (CE) as a novel method for evaluating IDE-mediated Aβ 1–40 proteolysis. This method employs chemically unmodified substrates that are readily obtained …

Foufou: Using Multimedia To Promote A New Product And Establish A Brand Identity Online, Yu-Chang Huang

Theses

One night, my friend and I went to a night market in Taiwan and we were amazed by the great variety of adorable and interesting merchandise items, such as: puppets, stationery, t-shirts, and gadgets that were imprinted with Mashimaro, a Korean fictional character. Mashimaro has becaome incredibly popular in Asian countries, with it coming to force mainly through the Internet. In Japan, most popular cartoon characters, including Doraemon, Pokemon, and Hello Kitty, are introduced and established rapport with the people because of a bombardment of cartoons and advertisements on television. As these cartoon characters become more popular, merchandising begins. They …

Two Methodologies In Pursuit Of The Elucidation Of Copper (Ii)—Centered Bioinorganic Chemistry, William John Wagner Mar 2009

Two Methodologies In Pursuit Of The Elucidation Of Copper (Ii)—Centered Bioinorganic Chemistry, William John Wagner

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Copper is a widely distributed transition metal in the earth's crust and has been adopted in a variety of biological systems. In many ways the biochemical usefulness of copper stems from its positive redox potential. This positive redox potential allows copper to assist in the movement of electrons. Copper ions can be found in natural systems as either CuI, CuII or CuIII in part due to this redox potential. While CuII -centered biochemistry has been studied for years, mechanistic details in certain CuII -centered redox reactions remain unresolved. This study presents two methodologies for …

Pestilence In Paradise: Leprosy Accounts In The Annual Reports Of The Governor Of The Territory Of Hawaii, Charles D. Bernholz Mar 2009

Pestilence In Paradise: Leprosy Accounts In The Annual Reports Of The Governor Of The Territory Of Hawaii, Charles D. Bernholz

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Libraries: Faculty Publications

An examination of the history of leprosy, or Hansen’s disease, in the Territory of Hawaii is a clear window upon how the federal government addressed its fundamental responsibilities to an indigenous people of this nation. Over the years, and in particular prior to 1934, various federal agencies oversaw the array of this nation’s territories, but the Department of the Interior was always accountable for those of Alaska and Hawaii. Each agency acquired annual reports from the assigned administrators of such areas. These federal documents offer a remarkable perspective of these diverse geographic locations, and contain data on aspects of local …

The Electrophysiological Manifestation Of Dutch Verb Second Violations, Dirk B. Den Ouden, Roelien Bastiaanse Mar 2009

The Electrophysiological Manifestation Of Dutch Verb Second Violations, Dirk B. Den Ouden, Roelien Bastiaanse

Communication Sciences and Disorders Faculty Articles and Research

We investigated the processing of violations of the verb position in Dutch, in a group of healthy subjects, by measuring event-related potentials (ERPs) through electroencephalography (EEG). In Dutch, the base position of the verb is clause final, but in matrix clauses, the finite verb is in second position, a construction known as Verb Second. In embedded clauses, the finite verb remains in its clause-final base position. The results show that ungrammatical placement of finite verbs in second position in embedded clauses yields a P600 response, which suggests that the parser treats this type of violation as a clear syntactic …

ABSTRACT: BACKGROUND: Acute renal failure (ARF) is a common condition in hospitalized patients, characterized by a rapid fall in glomerular filtration rate (GFR), carries a high morbidity and mortality, often preventable, so rapid recognition and treatment may prevent irreversible loss of nephrons. OBJECTIVE: To find out the cause of acute renal failure in children and to study the clinical presentation and management modalities and sequel. METHODS: A prospective study done in Central Teaching Hospital for children from January 2006 to December 2006. 120 patients aged 1month- to 12 years who were diagnosed and treated as cases of acute renal failure …

Introduction To Ecological Landscaping: A Holistic Description And Framework To Guide The Study And Management Of Urban Landscape Parcels, Loren B. Byrne, Parwinder Grewal

Cities and the Environment (CATE)

Urbanized ecosystems and urban human populations are expanding around the world with potentially negative environmental outcomes. A challenge for achieving sustainable urban social-ecological systems is understanding how urbanized landscapes can be designed and managed to minimize negative effects. To this end, an interdisciplinary Ecological Landscaping conference was organized to examine the interacting sociocultural and ecological causes and consequences of landscaping practices and products. A theme of the conference was that scientific principles are important for guiding the development of sustainable landscaping practices and the public policies. To introduce this special issue of Cities and the Environment which contains articles from …
