Vodcasting, Itunes U, And Faculty Collaboration, Jason Paul Michel, Susan Hurst, Andrew Revelle

E-JASL: Electronic Journal of Academic and Special Librarianship (1999-2009, Volumes 1-10)

Introduction

In the summer of 2008, the Miami University Libraries began a pilot project to integrate Web video tutorials (vodcasts) into a multiplicity of access points to enhance and extend library services. By the end of the project, Web video tutorials had been embedded in specific course sites in the course management system Blackboard, as well as in our institution's iTunes U site. The libraries were, in fact, the first entity on campus to feature publicly-available content on iTunes U. This brief article will delineate the project and explain why we believe this effort has helped position the library within …

Gold Nanorod-Mediated Photothermolysis Induces Apoptosis Of Macrophages Via Damage Of Mitochondria, Ling Tong, Ji-Xin Cheng Apr 2009

Gold Nanorod-Mediated Photothermolysis Induces Apoptosis Of Macrophages Via Damage Of Mitochondria, Ling Tong, Ji-Xin Cheng

Other Nanotechnology Publications

Aims: Induction of apoptosis or necrosis in activated macrophages by gold nanorod-mediated photothermolysis is demonstrated and the mechanisms underlying the processes are investigated. Materials & methods: Gold nanorods were functionalized with cysteine-octaarginine peptides (R8-NRs). Uptake of R8-NRs by activated macrophages was monitored by two-photon luminescence imaging. The laser irradiation conditions were controlled to induce apoptosis or necrosis to R8-NR-internalized macrophages. Mitochondrial damage and reactive oxygen species overproduction during photothermolysis was investigated by confocal fluorescence microscopy and transmission-electron microscopy. Results: Activated macrophages efficiently uptake R8-NRs both in vitro and in live animals. Laser irradiation of internalized nanorods with controlled power density …

The Sustainability Of The Roman Forum, David Gargiulo Apr 2009

The Sustainability Of The Roman Forum, David Gargiulo

Grace Allen Scholars Theses

If walls could talk, what would the crumbling walls of the Curia Hostilia, the Temple of Venus and Roma, or any other structure in the Roman Forum tell us? Surely, tales of the glory of the Roman Empire that erected them would be told in their deserved splendor. However, the Forum Romanum tells the tales of thousands of others as well, the saga of the people who lived around those walls for more than 2000 years. For instance, the Forum’s loss of many of its marble and other stone taken by those in desperate need of building materials in the …

Walking The Walk: An Examination Of Āl Murrah Bedouin's Motives For Continued Nomadism, Benjamin Mehanni Apr 2009

Walking The Walk: An Examination Of Āl Murrah Bedouin's Motives For Continued Nomadism, Benjamin Mehanni

Grace Allen Scholars Theses

The Āl Murrah, a Bedouin tribe in Saudi Arabia, practice nomadic pastoralism to this day. They continue to resist the pressures to settle exerted by government sponsored settlement programs, as well as the rise of a modern capitalist economy, whose growth increases the cost of living. The Āl Murrah’s motives for resisting sedentarization are based on a collectivist value system that defines a high quality of life based on accessing the desert and camels’ milk, having the freedom to decide when and where to herd their camels, and gaining the respect of their family and community. These factors are contingent …

A Proposal For A Student Office For Sustainability And Awareness, Frank Michael Malatesta Apr 2009

A Proposal For A Student Office For Sustainability And Awareness, Frank Michael Malatesta

Grace Allen Scholars Theses

The environment has been neglected for too much of the history of industrialized society, Only now, after much damage has occurred, are nations beginning to support environmentally friendly policies and initiatives. Despite the effort, the need for change has not hit the all of thepopulation with a "Jolt." One of the best places to develop a sustainability mindset is at the University level. Universities must lead the example as the focal points of their respective communities and as the training grounds for the leaders of tommorrow. Currently, the University of South Florida falls short in the endeavor. The University lacks …

The Danish Cartoon Controversy And The Rhetoric Of Libertarian Regret, Robert A. Khan Apr 2009

The Danish Cartoon Controversy And The Rhetoric Of Libertarian Regret, Robert A. Khan

University of Miami International and Comparative Law Review

The publication of cartoons insulting the prophet Mohammed created afar greater controversy in Europe than it did in the United States. In this article, I attempt to trace this difference to broader differences in the way Americans and Europeans think about offensive speech. While Americans have developed a language of "libertarian regret, " which allows them to criticize speech that they nevertheless concede the legal system must protect, Europeans are much more concerned about the threat posed by acts of intolerance. As a result, Europeans tended to view Muslim protests against the cartoons as a potential harbinger of totalitarianism. By …

The Effects Of Parental Upbringing On Collegiate Sexual Activity, Courtney Watson Apr 2009

The Effects Of Parental Upbringing On Collegiate Sexual Activity, Courtney Watson

XULAneXUS

The present research examined the effects of parental openness and support on the sexual activity of college students. The effects of parental reaction to collegiate sexual activity were also examined. It was hypothesized that students with supportive and open parents would engage in sexually responsible behavior. On the other hand, students with parents who were not open and unsupportive were expected to describe a negative parental reaction to their sexual histories. Although the study found no significant effects in relation to sexual activity, results indicated significant effects of parental openness on parental reaction. Further research is needed to examine a …

Falsity, Insincerity, And The Freedom Of Expression, Emily Spottswood Apr 2009

Falsity, Insincerity, And The Freedom Of Expression, Emily Spottswood

Scholarly Publications

Three decades ago, the Supreme Court announced that false statements of fact are devoid of constitutional value, without providing either a reasoned explanation for that principle or any supporting citations. This assertion has become one of the most frequently repeated dogmas of First Amendment law and theory, endlessly repeated and never challenged. Disturbingly, this idea has provided the theoretic foundation for a regime in which some speakers can be penalized for even honestly-believed factual errors. Even worse, this dogma is flat wrong. False statements often have value in themselves, and we should protect them even in some situations where we …

Sacrificios Para La Familia: The Context Of Mexican Farm Worker Narratives, Carolina Valderrama

McNair Scholars Research Journal

Among the school age population in Idaho, the populations most at risk for not graduating and or dropping out from high school are the children of migrant farm workers. According to data from the 2000 CPS, the dropout rate is 44.2% for Hispanics 16 through 24 who are born outside the United States. Previous research has focused on several contributing factors to the dropout rate such as, socioeconomic status, recent immigration, and linguistic differences, few studies however, have focused on the role of generational context as a possible factor. This study explores the role of generation as a factor influencing …

Dietary Fat Feeding Alters Lipid Peroxidation In Surfactant-Like Particles Secreted By Rat Small Intestine, Aasma Turan, Akhtar Mahmood, David Alpers Apr 2009

Dietary Fat Feeding Alters Lipid Peroxidation In Surfactant-Like Particles Secreted By Rat Small Intestine, Aasma Turan, Akhtar Mahmood, David Alpers

Open Access Publications

BACKGROUND: Long-term feeding of fish oil (n-3) and corn oil (n-6) markedly enhances levels of lipid peroxidation within isolated rat enterocytes. The effect is 10-fold greater at the villus tip than in the crypt region, correlating with the distribution of deleterious oxidative systems (glutathione reductase) in the tip and beneficial systems (superoxide dismutase) at the base of the villus. Because of this vertical gradient of peroxidation, the process was thought to play a role in apoptosis of enterocytes at the villus tip. Surfactant-like particles (SLPs) are membranes secreted by the enterocyte and a component of these membranes is directed to …

What Determines The Level Of Funding For An Endangered Species?, Josh Mahoney Apr 2009

What Determines The Level Of Funding For An Endangered Species?, Josh Mahoney

Major Themes in Economics

The U.S. federal government allocates resources for the protection of endangered species. Using an ordinary least squares regression, the study analyzes what variables affect the amount of funds an endangered vertebrate receives from the federal government. The results suggest that animal size affects spending decisions. Specifically, larger animals receive more money. Animals designated as high priorities by the federal government do not receive significantly more funds than animals given lower priority. Animals in conflict with economic development, however, are given preference in spending decisions. Overall, the results indicate a lack of consistency in current policy towards endangered species preservation.

The Validity Of Karl Marx’S Theory Of Historical Materialism, Kaleb Shimp Apr 2009

The Validity Of Karl Marx’S Theory Of Historical Materialism, Kaleb Shimp

Major Themes in Economics

Marx’s theory of historical materialism uses the evolution of productive forces and class struggle to explain history. With the fall of communism in the 20th century, many components of historical materialism have come under fire. This paper is a defense of the validity of historical materialism and concludes that some of the arguments against Marx’s theory are unfounded, while others still hold weight. What remains is a broad view of history that still has value.

A Strategy Oriented, Machine Learning Approach To Automatic Quality Assessment Of Wikipedia Articles, Gabriel De La Calzada Apr 2009

A Strategy Oriented, Machine Learning Approach To Automatic Quality Assessment Of Wikipedia Articles, Gabriel De La Calzada

Master's Theses

This work discusses an approach to modeling and measuring information quality of Wikipedia articles. The approach is based on the idea that the quality of Wikipedia articles with distinctly different profiles needs to be measured using different information quality models. To implement this approach, a software framework written in the Java language was developed to collect and analyze information of Wikipedia articles.

We report on our initial study, which involved two categories of Wikipedia articles: ”stabilized” (those, whose content has not undergone major changes for a significant period of time) and ”controversial” (articles that have undergone vandalism, revert wars, or …

Inter-Cohort Competition Drives Density Dependence And Selective Mortality In A Marine Fish, Jameal F. Samhouri, Mark A. Steele, Graham E. Forrester Apr 2009

Inter-Cohort Competition Drives Density Dependence And Selective Mortality In A Marine Fish, Jameal F. Samhouri, Mark A. Steele, Graham E. Forrester

Natural Resources Science Faculty Publications

For organisms with complex life cycles, the transition between life stages and between habitats can act as a significant demographic and selective bottleneck. In particular, competition with older and larger conspecifics and heterospecifics may influence the number and characteristics of individuals successfully making the transition. We investigated whether the availability of enemy-free space mediated the interaction between adult goldspot gobies (Gnatholepis thompsoni), a. common tropical reef fish, and juvenile conspecifics that had recently settled from the plankton. We added rocks, which provide refuge from predators, to one-half of each of five entire coral reefs in the Bahamas and …
