Supplying Clean Water To Jaipur: A Study Of Two Current Government Projects, Jenna Stearns Apr 2009

Supplying Clean Water To Jaipur: A Study Of Two Current Government Projects, Jenna Stearns

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Water is arguably the most important natural resource for human development, economic growth, and sustainability of the environment. Access to clean water is the most basic human need for life and health, and without it people cannot survive. Water plays a crucial role in determining where communities settle and how big they will be able to grow. Besides being the “elixir of life,” it is also essential for socioeconomic development, agriculture, industry, power generation, and other daily activities. Due to the growing population and the shortage of water around the world, it is said that future wars will be fought …

National Parks In China: A New Model For Nature Conservation, Katherine Fritz Apr 2009

National Parks In China: A New Model For Nature Conservation, Katherine Fritz

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

When the author of “China has First National Park” published in The Science News-Letter in 1948, he could not foresee the next 60 years of China’s struggle to develop an effective nature conservation system. If he had, he would have known that simply recognizing the value of precious land, as China did in 1948, does not automatically lead to a sophisticated, nation-wide national park system.

National parks are the hallmark of advanced civil society and complex government conservation schemes. Since the State Forestry Department declared China’s first officially protected space at Dinghu Shan Nature Reserve in Guangdong province in 1956 …

Constructions Of Disease In Mayo Village, Rachel Eades Apr 2009

Constructions Of Disease In Mayo Village, Rachel Eades

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Understanding how individuals and institutions negotiate illness and construct ideas about disease is important to public health efforts across the globe. Countries in sub-Saharan Africa suffer from a variety of health problems that many regions of the world have long since eradicated. Economic hardship, combined with high rates of communicable diseases, food poverty, lack of sanitation, and poor water quality make countries in sub-Saharan Africa some of the poorest and sickest in the world. Tanzania is a prime example. The purpose of this study was to explore how people in one rural, Tanzanian village construct ideas about disease – its …

Text Summarization Using Concept Hierarchy, Xiaomei Huang Apr 2009

Text Summarization Using Concept Hierarchy, Xiaomei Huang

Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation aims to create new sentences to summarize text documents. In addition to generating new sentences, this project also generates new concepts and extracts key sentences to summarize documents. This project is the first research work that can generate new key concepts and can create new sentences to summarize documents.

Automatic document summarization is the process of creating a condensed version of the document. The condensed version extracts the key contents from the original document. Most related research uses statistical methods that generate a summary based on word distribution in the document. In this dissertation, we create a summary …

Too Big To Fail, Wayne Stormann Apr 2009

Too Big To Fail, Wayne Stormann

Taproot: A Journal of Outdoor Education

On Monday, April 27, 2009, seven Greenpeace activists were arrested for scaling a construction crane and unfurling a gigantic banner with a picture of Earth accompanied by the caption – “Too Big to Fail.” The Greenpeace activists were calling attention to the fact that it is Planet Earth, not the large financial institutions which were bailed out, ostensibly, as “too big to fail,” that should warrant our concern.

Governing The Socially Responsible Corporation: A Gandhian Perspective, N Balasubramanian Apr 2009

Governing The Socially Responsible Corporation: A Gandhian Perspective, N Balasubramanian

Working Papers

There is increasing evidence of migration towards an integrated model of governance which is sensitive to the needs of the society even as it emphasizes the imperatives of shareholder wealth creation, its accounting and reporting, and equitable distribution. While much of this transformation is usually credited to initiatives from the developed markets of the west, there is in fact a large measure of such wisdom and counsel available in the Indian tradition, and Gandhi has been among its foremost exponents and interlocutors in modern times. Gandhian concepts of trusteeship, truth, non-violence, and satyagraha or truth-force are in perfect sync with, …

Memes In Organization Studies: A Preliminary Research Agenda, K.S Manikandan Apr 2009

Memes In Organization Studies: A Preliminary Research Agenda, K.S Manikandan

Working Papers

Richard Dawkins (1976) introduced the concept of 'memes' as the basic unit of cultural evolution in his popular classic work 'The Selfish Gene'. As organizations can be conceptualized as cultural entities, it makes sense to explore how the concept of memes can be applied in organization studies. Several works have started to appear on this front. This paper offers an introduction to the concept of memes and an account of the literature in the field of memetics. Ideas related to organization studies are explored in detail. It is seen that two key ideas have informed the research in organization studies …

Linking Wildlife Populations With Ecosystem Change: State-Of-The-Art Satellite Ecology For National-Park Science, Mark Hebblewhite Apr 2009

Linking Wildlife Populations With Ecosystem Change: State-Of-The-Art Satellite Ecology For National-Park Science, Mark Hebblewhite

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

As human impacts increase in national parks and the greater ecosystems surrounding them, the National Park Service faces the difficulty of monitoring ecosystem changes and responses of key wildlife indicator species within parks. Responses of bison to trail grooming in Yellowstone National Park (Wyoming, Montana, and Idaho) and control of the animals once they leave the park (Bruggeman et al. 2007), migration of wildlife across park boundaries (Griffith et al. 2002; Berger 2004), effects of restored wolves on vegetation communities through trophic cascades (Hebblewhite et al. 2005), and responses of wildlife to the use of prescribed fires all represent problems …

Reaching For The Moon: Expanding Transactive Memory's Reach With Wikis And Tagging, Terri L. Griffith, Mark B. Allan, Anthony A. Korolis

Management & Entrepreneurship

Transactive memory systems (TMS) support knowledge sharing and coordination in groups. TMS are enabled by the encoding, storage, retrieval, and communication of knowledge by domain experts-knowing who knows what. The NASA Ames Intelligent Robotics Group provides an example of how TMS theoretical boundaries are stretched in actual use. This group is characterized as being highly innovative as they routinely engage in field studies that are inherently difficult due to time and technology resource constraints. We provide an expanded view of TMS that includes the technology support system available to this group, and possible further extensions to NASA's or other such …

The Science Of Mediumship And The Evidence Of Survival, Benjamin R. Cox Iii Apr 2009

The Science Of Mediumship And The Evidence Of Survival, Benjamin R. Cox Iii

Master of Liberal Studies Theses

The purpose of the first part of this paper is to present various suggestions for diverse sources regarding mediumship from the beginnings of research in the 1860’s to the present day. The second section of the paper is divided into several chapters exposing the best cases of evidence for survival beyond bodily death, such as Mrs. Piper’s trance mediumship with automatic writing, Palladino’s physical mediumship, the cross-correspondence material in the first half of the 20th century and three reincarnation cases suggestive of survival-- plus my own training and experience as a professional mental and seance medium. The paper’s last chapter …

Movements And Dive Patterns Of A Rehabilitated Risso’S Dolphin, Grampus Griseus, In The Gulf Of Mexico And Atlantic Ocean, Randall Wells, Charles Manire, Lynne Byrd, David Smith, Janet Gannon, Deborah Fauquier, Keith Mullin

United States Department of Commerce: Staff Publications

Risso’s dolphins (Grampus griseus) occur throughout the world in tropical and temperate waters. The best estimates of abundance for Risso’s dolphins are 1,589 (CV = 0.27) for the northern Gulf of Mexico and 20,479 (CV = 0.59) for the U.S. Atlantic Ocean (Waring et al. 2006). G. griseus is the fourth most abundant cetacean species in the oceanic waters of the northern Gulf and is found in all seasons (Mullin et al. 1994, 2004; Maze-Foley and Mullin 2006).
Risso’s dolphins typically can be found over the continental shelf edge and the upper continental slope, where sea surface temperatures …

A Trans-Holocene Archaeological Record Of Guadalupe Fur Seals (Arctocephalus Townsendi) On The California Coast, Torben Rick, Robert Delong, Jon Erlandson, Todd Braje, Terry Jones, Douglas Kennett, Thomas Wake, Phillip Walker Apr 2009

A Trans-Holocene Archaeological Record Of Guadalupe Fur Seals (Arctocephalus Townsendi) On The California Coast, Torben Rick, Robert Delong, Jon Erlandson, Todd Braje, Terry Jones, Douglas Kennett, Thomas Wake, Phillip Walker

United States Department of Commerce: Staff Publications

Guadalupe fur seals (Arctocephalus townsendi) were decimated by 19th century commercial sealers in the northeastern Pacific and thought to be extinct until 1928 when commercial fishermen caught two adult males at Isla de Guadalupe from a group of up to 60 adults and pups (Wedgeforth 1928, Huey 1930). These two animals were brought to the San Diego Zoo, prompting several zoological expeditions to Isla de Guadalupe in the 1930s and 1940s, but none successfully located Guadalupe fur seals. In 1949, a single male was seen on San Nicolas Island, California (Bartholomew 1950), and in 1954, a small breeding …

Record Of Feeding By Humpback Whales (Megaptera Novaeangliae) In Tropical Waters Off Brazil, Luiz Claudio Pinto De Sa Alves, Artur Andriolo, Alexandra Zerbini, Jose Luis Altmayer Pizzorno, Phillip Clapham

United States Department of Commerce: Staff Publications

Humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae) occur in all major oceans of the world, where most populations typically migrate between high-latitude summer feeding areas and low-latitude wintering grounds (Mackintosh 1942, Clapham and Mead 1999). Historical and contemporary data indicate that a humpback whale population spends the winter breeding season (typically June–November; Martins et al. 2001) in waters over the continental shelf off the eastern coast of South America (5°– 21°S; Williamson 1975, Zerbini et al. 2004, Andriolo et al. 2006). This population migrates through oceanic waters to summer subantarctic feeding destinations near South Georgia (∼54°S, 36°W) and the South Sandwich …

Alaska Marine Mammal Stock Assessments, 2008, R. P. Angliss, B. M. Allen

United States Department of Commerce: Staff Publications

This report provides information on the marine mammal stocks of Alaska under the jurisdiction of the National Marine Fisheries Service. Each stock assessment includes, when available, a description of the stock’s geographic range, a minimum population estimate, current population trends, current and maximum net productivity rates, optimum sustainable population levels and allowable removal levels, and estimates of annual human-caused mortality and serious injury through interactions with commercial fisheries and subsistence hunters. These data will be used to evaluate the progress of each fishery towards achieving the MMPA’s goal of zero fishery-related mortality and serious injury of marine mammals. The Stock …

Nano-Formulation And Controlled Delivery Of Low Solubility Anticancer Drugs, Anshul Agarwal Apr 2009

Nano-Formulation And Controlled Delivery Of Low Solubility Anticancer Drugs, Anshul Agarwal

Doctoral Dissertations

Optimal drug delivery and reduction of systemic adverse effects have been age old problems in chemotherapeutics in all types of human cancer. During chemotherapy, using water insoluble drugs like paclitaxel and tamoxifen, it has been realized that better formulations are needed for more specific and controlled drug delivery of these agents. In a novel approach to form high content stable nanocolloids of these drugs with controllable release rate, a sonicated layer-by-layer (LbL) polyelectrolyte coating technology is suggested. The desired features of pharmaceutical carriers for intravenous administration include their small size and biodegradability, good loading capacity for a given drug, high …
