Mind Vs. Media: A Civil War Between Typography And The Mediated Image, Elizabeth J. Neffinger
Mind Vs. Media: A Civil War Between Typography And The Mediated Image, Elizabeth J. Neffinger
Senior Honors Theses
The past thirty years have marked the start of a new kind of civil war in our digitally powered American society. There is a deep chasm between the cry for the lost art of typography and the mediated power of the Image. We are a culture battling a war in our own heads, attempting to assimilate Images without replacing the need for a written text.
This thesis will argue that the mediated Image is not a death sentence to critical thinking; rather it is an undeniable, inescapable power that can be used to positively influence our culture. It will research …

Phylogeography Of The Rufous-Naped Wren (Campylorhynchus Rufinucha): Speciation And Hybridization In Mesoamerica, Hernan Vazquez-Miranda, Adolfo G. Navarro-Siguenza, Kevin E. Omland
School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications
The Rufous-naped Wren (Campylorhynchus rufinucha) is a sedentary, morphologically variable species distributed in the dry forests of Mesoamerica. It ranges from Colima, Mexico, south to Costa Rica along the Pacific slope, with a disjunct population in central Veracruz. Populations of two forms on the Pacific slope intergrade in Chiapas, Mexico, apparently as a result of secondary contact. We sequenced a mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) gene to explore phylogeographic patterns and hybridization. We found three divergent lineages, two geographically spanning the Isthmus of Tehuantepec and a disjunct Veracruz population. Analyses of molecular variation and statistics are consistent with genetically distinct …

The Role Of Connexin-36 Gap Junctions In Alcohol Intoxication And Reward, Kathryn Diane Bradley
The Role Of Connexin-36 Gap Junctions In Alcohol Intoxication And Reward, Kathryn Diane Bradley
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this thesis project was to examine the function of connexin-36 (Cx36) gap junctions (GJs) in producing alcohol's intoxicating and rewarding effects. GABA neurons are thought to inhibit dopamine (DA) neurotransmission in the mesocorticolimbic system, which originates in the midbrain ventral tegmental area (VTA) and projects to limbic structures such as the nucleus accumbens (NAcc). The mesolimbic DA system is believed to be the neural substrate of alcohol intoxication and addiction (Tepper, Paladini, & Celada, 1998). Alcohol suppresses the firing rate of GABA neurons in the VTA (Gallegos, Criado, Lee, Henriksen, & Steffensen, 1999) and presumably disinhibits DA …

Background: Combustion generated particulate matter is deposited in the respiratory tract and pose a hazard to the lungs through their potential to cause oxidative stress and inflammation. We have previously shown that combustion of fuels and chlorinated hydrocarbons produce semiquinone-type radicals that are stabilized on particle surfaces (i.e. environmentally persistent free radicals; EPFRs). Because the composition and properties of actual combustion-generated particles are complex, heterogeneous in origin, and vary from day-to-day, we have chosen to use surrogate particle systems. In particular, we have chosen to use the radical of 2-monochlorophenol (MCP230) as the EPFR because we have previously shown that …

Ceramide Metabolism Regulates A Neuronal Nadph Oxidase Influencing Neuron Survival During Inflammation, Brian M. Barth
Ceramide Metabolism Regulates A Neuronal Nadph Oxidase Influencing Neuron Survival During Inflammation, Brian M. Barth
Chemistry and Biochemistry
Inflammation is a major component of acute and chronic pathologies of the central nervous system, including psychiatric disorders. Microglia respond to pathogens, injury, and toxins by secreting inflammatory mediators including pro-inflammatory cytokines in an event known as neuroinflammation. This thesis research investigated a link between neuroinflammation and oxidative stress, and ultimately neurodegeneration. The cytokine tumor necrosis factor alpha was shown to stimulate a neuronal NADPH oxidase (NOX), specifically by stimulating the production of ceramide and ceramide-1-phosphate via Mg 2+-neutral sphingomyelinase (Mg2+-nSMase) and ceramide kinase. Intriguingly, glucosylceramide blocked NOX activation, linking ceramide neutralization directly to a decline in oxidative stress. Most …

The Seasonality Of Reproduction, Body Composition, And Energy Expenditure In Northern Red-Backed Voles (Myodes Rutilus), Kalb Thayer Stevenson
Biological Sciences
Arvicoline rodents (voles and lemmings) inhabit high-latitude environments and undergo pronounced seasonal changes in their physiology and behavior. They are an important prey resource in circumpolar regions, and their population numbers can affect the survival and reproductive fitness of many predator and secondary prey species. I studied the effects of seasonality and environmental factors on reproduction and energy allocation in the northern red-backed vole (Myodes rutilus), an arvicoline rodent in Alaska known to have bred in winter. My overall aim was to measure the effects of season and environmental factors on the reproductive axis, body composition, and energy expenditure of …

Occurrence Of Mitochondria-Targeted Late Embryogenesis Abundant (Lea) Gene In Animals Increases Organelle Resistance To Water Stress, Michael A. Menze, Leaf Boswell, Mehmet Toner, Steven C. Hand
Faculty Publications
Anhydrobiotic animals survive virtually complete loss of cellular water. The mechanisms that explain this phenomenon are not fully understood but often include the accumulation of low molecular weight solutes such as trehalose and macromolecules like Late Embryogenesis Abundant (LEA) proteins. Here we report for the first time the occurrence of a mitochondria-targeted LEA gene (Afrlea3m) product in an animal species. The deduced molecular mass of the 307-amino acid polypeptide from the brine shrimp Artemia franciscana is 34 kDa. Bioinformatic analyses reveal features typical of a Group 3 LEA protein, and subcellular localization programs predict targeting of the mature peptide to …

These data describe 703 species with geo-referencing information (latitude longitude) for 42 locations in Costa Rica. They are taken from the species lists presented in B. Lawson (2009; A bird-finding guide to Costa Rica. Comstock Publishing Associates and Cornell University Press. ISBN 978-0-8014-7584-9). This database is based on extensive fieldwork by B. Lawson and as described in his book. Here, these extensive species list data got geo-referenced via Google Maps. The resulting database described here consist of 4,829 rows and 8 columns (Page No,Site No,Site Name, latitude, longitude, SpeciesNo,SpeciestoExpect,Source) and is 969KB in size. The following locations were sampled: Arenal …
