Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to determine whether Tennessee Comprehensive Assessment Program (TCAP) Achievement reading scores, school district per-pupil expenditures, school size, percentage of students qualifying for free and reduced-priced meals, and attendance were related to science TCAP test scores from the 2007-2008 school year. The data were gathered from an analysis of mean standardized test scores in reading and science of 8th graders in 67 school systems comprising 181 schools located throughout Tennessee. One hundred eighty-one schools configured grades 6 through 8 were used in this study. Only 177 schools had reported attendance available on the Tennessee …

A Biblical Basis For Social And Political Involvement Within A Traditional Dispensational Framework, Thomas D. Ice May 2009

A Biblical Basis For Social And Political Involvement Within A Traditional Dispensational Framework, Thomas D. Ice

Article Archives

Traditional dispensationalism1 has the reputation of lack of interest in social and political involvement. This may or may not be a fair perception. I think it has largely been true with some notable exceptions.2 However, I do think that dispensational theory, whether developed and applied or not, is capable of producing a theology of social and political involvement that is consistent with the principles of dispensational theology. The goal of this paper is to layout a broad outline of just such a theology. The biblical covenants provide a framework by which we can know how God wants us to behave …

The Seventy Weeks Of Daniel, Thomas D. Ice May 2009

The Seventy Weeks Of Daniel, Thomas D. Ice

Article Archives

One of the most important prophecy passages in the whole Bible is that of God’s prophecy given to Daniel in Daniel 9:24-27. This passage constitutes one of the most amazing prophecies in all the Bible. If worked out logically, this text is both seminal and determinative in the outworking of one’s understanding of Bible prophecy. Especially for those of us who believe that prophecy should be understood literally, it is essential that a right understanding of this central text be developed and cultivated. Thus, with this article, I am beginning a series that examines Daniel’s prophecy for the purpose of …

The Literal Fulfillment Of Bible Prophecy, Thomas D. Ice May 2009

The Literal Fulfillment Of Bible Prophecy, Thomas D. Ice

Article Archives

I have always thought that one of the most powerful arguments for the literal fulfillment of prophecy relating to Christ’s future coming is the fact that prophecy was fulfilled literally at His first coming. I still very much believe this in spite of the fact that some have attempted to dispute this important truth. Those who argue that prophecy will not be fulfilled literally in the future go against God’s past pattern and have no biblical basis for their claims.

Deep-Sea Hydrothermal Vent Fauna: Evolution, Dispersal, Succession And Biogeography, Alexander Howe May 2009

Deep-Sea Hydrothermal Vent Fauna: Evolution, Dispersal, Succession And Biogeography, Alexander Howe

Macalester Reviews in Biogeography

Since their discovery in 1977, the ecological communities found at deep-sea hydrothermal vents have provided many surprises about life on Earth in extreme conditions and continue to instill much curiosity in scientists that study their systems as well as those simply interested in Earthʼs biodiversity. This review paper will attempt to provide a general overview of as many aspects of hydrothermal vents and their associated fauna as possible. The general geological processes that produce these systems and the chemosynthesis which sustains abundant life at these depths will first be covered. A basic overview of hydrothermal vent ecology, including some key …

Why Sacrifices In The Millennium, Thomas D. Ice May 2009

Why Sacrifices In The Millennium, Thomas D. Ice

Article Archives

A common objection to the consistent literal interpretation of Bible prophecy is found in Ezekiel’s Temple vision (Ezek. 40—48). Opponents argue that if this is a literal, future Temple, then it will require a return to the sacrificial system that Christ made obsolete since the prophet speaks of “atonement” (kiper) in Ezekiel 43:13, 27; 45:15, 17, 20. This is true! Critics believe this to be a blasphemous contradiction to the finished work of Christ as presented in Hebrews 10. Hank Hanegraaff says that I have “exacerbated the problem by stating that without animal sacrifices in the Millennium, Yahweh’s holiness would …

The Meaning Of "Earth Dwellers" And The Book Of Revelation, Thomas D. Ice May 2009

The Meaning Of "Earth Dwellers" And The Book Of Revelation, Thomas D. Ice

Article Archives

Revelation 3:10 is rightly know as a passage that supports the pre-trib rapture doctrine, but the second half of the verse introduces us to the first use of the term “earth dwellers.” “Because you have kept the word of My perseverance, I also will keep you from the hour of testing, that hour which is about to come upon the whole world, to test those who dwell upon the earth.” 3:10 is the first use in Revelation of a phrase I call “earth dwellers” but usually translated “those who dwell upon the earth.” This phrase is used eleven times in …

Structure And Functions Of Keratin Proteins In Simple, Stratified, Keratinized And Cornified Epithelia, Hermann H. Bragulla, Dominique G. Homberger May 2009

Structure And Functions Of Keratin Proteins In Simple, Stratified, Keratinized And Cornified Epithelia, Hermann H. Bragulla, Dominique G. Homberger

Faculty Publications

Historically, the term 'keratin' stood for all of the proteins extracted from skin modifications, such as horns, claws and hooves. Subsequently, it was realized that this keratin is actually a mixture of keratins, keratin filament-associated proteins and other proteins, such as enzymes. Keratins were then defined as certain filament-forming proteins with specific physicochemical properties and extracted from the cornified layer of the epidermis, whereas those filament-forming proteins that were extracted from the living layers of the epidermis were grouped as 'prekeratins' or 'cytokeratins'. Currently, the term 'keratin' covers all intermediate filament-forming proteins with specific physicochemical properties and produced in any …

Apicomplexan Parasites Co-Opt Host Calpains To Facilitate Their Escape From Infected Cells, Rajesh Chandramohanadas, Paul H. Davis, Daniel P. Beiting, Michael B. Harbut, Claire Darling, Geetha Velmourougane, Ming Yeh Lee, Peter A. Greer, David S. Roos, Doron C. Greenbaum May 2009

Biology Faculty Publications

Apicomplexan parasites, including Plasmodium falciparum and Toxoplasma gondii (the causative agents of malaria and toxoplasmosis, respectively), are responsible for considerable morbidity and mortality worldwide. These pathogenic protozoa replicate within an intracellular vacuole inside of infected host cells, from which they must escape to initiate a new lytic cycle. By integrating cell biological, pharmacological, and genetic approaches, we provide evidence that both Plasmodium and Toxoplasma hijack host cell calpain proteases to facilitate parasite egress. Immunodepletion or inhibition of calpain-1 in hypotonically lysed and resealed erythrocytes prevented the escape of P. falciparum parasites, which was restored by adding purified calpain-1. Similarly, efficient …

Neuroscience Faculty Publications

BACKGROUND: Sporadic Parkinson's disease (PD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder with unknown cause, but it has been suggested that neuroinflammation may play a role in pathogenesis of the disease. Neuroinflammatory component in process of PD neurodegeneration was proposed by postmortem, epidemiological and animal model studies. However, it remains unclear how neuroinflammatory factors contribute to dopaminergic neuronal death in PD.

FINDINGS: In this study, we analyzed the relationship among inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS)-derived NO, mitochondrial dysfunction and dopaminergic neurodegeneration to examine the possibility that microglial neuroinflammation may induce dopaminergic neuronal loss in the substantia nigra. Unilateral injection of lipopolysaccharide (LPS) …

On The Beginning Of Contemporary Tibetan Art: The Exhibitions, Dealers, And Artists., Martha Allison May 2009

On The Beginning Of Contemporary Tibetan Art: The Exhibitions, Dealers, And Artists., Martha Allison

Theses and Dissertations

Contemporary Tibetan art has been internationally exhibited since the year 2000, and it continues to receive increasing recognition among international galleries and collectors. This thesis focuses on three major contributing factors that have affected the rising success of the contemporary Tibetan artists. The factors include ways in which popular stereotypes have influenced Western museum exhibitions of Tibetan art; dealers have marketed the artworks; and artists have created works that are both conceptually and aesthetically appealing to an international audience. Drawing from exhibition catalogs, interviews and art historical scholarship, this thesis looks at how the history of these factors has affected …

Minimum Criteria For Dna Damage-Induced Phase Advances In Circadian Rhythms, Christian I. Hong, Judit Zámborszky, Attila Csikász-Nagy May 2009

Minimum Criteria For Dna Damage-Induced Phase Advances In Circadian Rhythms, Christian I. Hong, Judit Zámborszky, Attila Csikász-Nagy

Dartmouth Scholarship

Robust oscillatory behaviors are common features of circadian and cell cycle rhythms. These cyclic processes, however, behave distinctively in terms of their periods and phases in response to external influences such as light, temperature, nutrients, etc. Nevertheless, several links have been found between these two oscillators. Cell division cycles gated by the circadian clock have been observed since the late 1950s. On the other hand, ionizing radiation (IR) treatments cause cells to undergo a DNA damage response, which leads to phase shifts (mostly advances) in circadian rhythms. Circadian gating of the cell cycle can be attributed to the cell cycle …

The Complexities And Opportunities Of Examining Scale In Ecology – With Application To Grassland Management, Skadi Von Reis May 2009

The Complexities And Opportunities Of Examining Scale In Ecology – With Application To Grassland Management, Skadi Von Reis

Macalester Reviews in Biogeography

Understanding the way in which biodiversity is created and maintained is the fundamental goal of applied ecology. In order to comprehend how diversity is distributed and isolate the factors contributing to diversity, multiple scales of study must be considered. Studies which base their conclusions on an isolated snapshot of an ecological system find their results challenged by considering both historical and spatial scales. The question of scale: its definition, the relevant scale at which biological processes produce observable patterns, the translation from small to large scales and the theoretical and technological complications scale presents, remain contentious issues in ecology. This …

Biogeography Of Microorganisms Inhabiting Marine Sponges, Suzy C. Szumowski May 2009

Biogeography Of Microorganisms Inhabiting Marine Sponges, Suzy C. Szumowski

Macalester Reviews in Biogeography

Sponge-associated microorganisms are an intriguing system for the consideration of biogeographic patterns due to complications arising from their small size and their symbiotic relationship with sponges. Whether or not microorganisms are capable of exhibiting biogeographic patterns is a topic of heated debate in the literature. Recent studies utilizing new identification techniques have revealed an astonishing amount of diversity and spatiotemporal stability in microorganism communities. Case studies outlined in this paper suggest that some sponge-associated microorganisms represent monophyletic groups that have evolved speciesspecific associations with their hosts. The biogeography of these organisms is receiving increasing attention because they are one of …

A Review Of Endemic Species In The Eastern Arc Afromontane Region: Importance, Inferences, And Conservation, Carl Skarbek May 2009

A Review Of Endemic Species In The Eastern Arc Afromontane Region: Importance, Inferences, And Conservation, Carl Skarbek

Macalester Reviews in Biogeography

The Eastern Arc mountain region has been identified as one of the top 25 biodiversity “hotspots” worldwide, and contains a large proportion of endemic species. The endemic species are invaluable resources. This review paper will explore and discuss the possible theories behind the high rate of endemism. The importance of these endemics to local peoples and to the greater global community has been studied thoroughly, and these results are presented in further detail in this paper. The Eastern Arc is also facing many problems that are threatening the biodiversity and rare endemic species of this region. Human expansion into natural …

Leishmaniasis: A Review Of The Disease And The Debate Over The Origin And Dispersal Of The Causaitive Parasite Leishmania, Molly Macmorris-Adix

Macalester Reviews in Biogeography

The vector borne disease Leishmaniasis, caused by the Leishmania parasite, is estimated to affect the lives of 12 million people. Manifesting itself into three different clinical forms that center on disfiguring sores and enlargement of several organs, Leishmaniasis is a devastating disease impairing economic productivity and impeding socioeconomic development. The complex life cycle of this parasite, involving a host, vector, and reservoir, has played a major role in defining the dispersal and prevalence of this disease on a global level. The prevalence of Leishmaniasis is highly concentrated due to the close relationship of this parasite and its single vector (the …

The Biogeography Of Plant Domestication, Alese M. Colehour May 2009

The Biogeography Of Plant Domestication, Alese M. Colehour

Macalester Reviews in Biogeography

Ranging between 11,000 and 4,000 years ago, several independent origins of agriculture appeared, though scholars disagree on exactly how many. This period, known as the “Neolithic Revolution” or the “Origins of Agriculture,” marks the initial emergence of food production economies. Archaeologists and biologists have worked alongside one another, often using a biogeographical approach, to investigate the origins of useful species, their range expansion, and genetic evolution through analyzing remains found at excavation sites around the world. Plant communities influence patterns in human behaviors and by understanding trends in biogeography we can begin to answer questions such as: Why did plant …
